Dear Friend, HFBA buried 383 Jews in 2016. Many were immigrants from the former Soviet Union. Others were Holocaust survivors. Some were lost souls who could never find their place in this world. Each was laid to rest with dignity and respect. The oldest person we buried last year was 103 years old. The youngest was just 26. We also buried still-borns; they never experienced life at all. Every death is also the story of a life. Our rabbis consoled those who were left behind. The lucky ones had husbands or wives and children. Many, however, had no one to mourn them; they had outlived their families – if there were families – and their friends. Yet no one was buried alone. The Staten Island chevra kadisha performed the ritual washing for each of the deceased at our Margaret and Leo Meyer and Hans M. Hirsch Tahara Facility. Our minyan volunteers were present at burials so that kaddish could be recited. We are deeply grateful to the chevra and to the minyan for their dedication to these sacred tasks. This past year, drones flew overhead as we began mapping Mount Richmond Cemetery. Our aim is to create a digital map of the 60,000 graves at the cemetery and coordinate it with our written records. A new database will pinpoint every grave and provide complete information on each burial. Ultimately, unmarked graves will be marked and family members who visit will be able to find their loved ones with ease. The entire mapping and digitizing project is expected to take another year and cost $175,000. By December 2016, we had raised $65,000 through generous contributions from the HFBA community. We also moved ahead in our work to preserve Silver Lake Cemetery. Opened in 1892, this cemetery was filled by 1909. About 13,600 Jews are buried here. Poor drainage, opportunistic trees and the ravages of time have caused headstones to fall and graves to move. We have completed a master plan for Silver Lake Cemetery preservation and will soon begin these urgent repairs. Some 1,000 school students volunteered at Silver Lake Cemetery in 2016. They helped clear debris and rake the leaves. We are grateful for the chance to teach these young people the value of chesed shel emet, kindness that expects no recompense. For the second year, we brought in a herd of goats to clear poison ivy, weeds and wild greens. Barnet Zodikoff was just 31 years old when he passed away and was buried in Silver Lake Cemetery. HFBA pledged to Barnet’s family – to the families of 13,600 other indigent Jews – that Silver Lake Cemetery would always be maintained in dignity and with respect. It is to keep this solemn promise that HFBA is preserving Silver Lake Cemetery. As we respect those who came before us, we set an example for the generations to come. And, finally, once again HFBA earned Charity Navigator’s Four-Star Rating – its highest ranking – in recognition of our internal management and transparency. Dear Friend,

HFBA buried 383 Jews in 2016.

The lucky ones had husbands or

wives and children. Many, however, had no one to mourn them; they had outlived their families – if there were

families – and their friends.

By December 2016, we

had raised $65,000 through generous contributions from the HFBA community.

For the second year, we brought in a herd of

goats to clear poison ivy, weeds and wild greens.

Barnet Zodikoff was just 31 years old when he passed away and was buried in Silver Lake Cemetery. HFBA

pledged to Barnet’s family – to the families of 13,600 other indigent Jews

– that Silver Lake Cemetery would always be maintained in dignity and with respect.

It is because of you, our dedicated supporter, that HFBA can perform this holy work. On behalf of everyone at HFBA, I thank you,

Amy Koplow Executive Director
