2016 ANNUAL REPORT
Carolina Public Press is a nonprofit online news service providing Western North Carolina with independent,
in-depth and investigative reporting and educational opportunities.
MENTAL HEALTH_____________________
Our investigation into an adult carehome company called Nutz R Us gainednational attention, especially as weexposed loopholes allowing NorthCarolina companies to continueoperating even as inspections findfailures to provide consistent qualityhealthcare and safe living conditions. The business later changed its name.
COAL ASH________________
We investigated residents’ allegationsthat well water located next to coal ashbasins causes illnesses. While powercompany officials contest theassertion, we also showed how statehealth officials appeared ill-equippedto make a decision. Our investigationshowed residents’ claims had merit andwere worth additional scrutiny.
TOP REPORTING PROJECTS
HUMANTRAFFICKING__________________
We investigated the troubled life and
death of Felicia Reeves, a Western North
Carolina woman who was implicated in
and perhaps the victim of human
trafficking. Reeves’ story also illustrated
failures by public agencies -- ranging from
veterans services to social services -- that
disregarded her requests for assistance.
The investigation into her situation is
ongoing.
NORTH CAROLINAGENERAL ASSEMBLY___________________
We remain the only news organization in
Western North Carolina to have a reporter
in Raleigh covering the North Carolina
General Assembly. This was essential
during the 2016 legislative session, where
North Carolina was under the national
gaze following the passage of HB2, known
by some as the “bathroom bill.” Our
analysis was among the first to show the
bill’s impact on a variety of discrimination
claims.

The Newsmakers forums bring together the state and
region's top journalists with those making and
influencing the news - people such as business leaders,
lawmakers, agency administrators, community experts
and public policy influencers- for in-depth, nonpartisan
conversations with the public. The purpose of these
events is to break down the barriers often felt among
journalists, lawmakers, community leaders and the
public, all toward building an engaged, informed
community and toward building civic dialogue on
important issues impacting all of Western North
Carolina.
Carolina Public Press held four Newsmakers forums in
2016: guns and gun policy; public lands; mental health
and human trafficking. Experts from across the state
attended as panelists, and we launched a live-streaming
service, allowing people from across the state (and
nearby states, RSVPs showed) to attend.
Carolina Public Press will hold a series of 10
Newsmakers forums in 2017, with topics ranging from
child welfare to renewable energy, housing for those
with mental illness to food security and food policy. We
also launched a sponsorship program that will help
support the conversations and our journalism.
