Dear Friends of Adena Health Foundation,

I am pleased to share Adena Health Foundation’s 2016 Annual Report . Your generous and abundant gifts enabled us to assist more charity patients, purchase diagnostic equipment to enhance patient care and help the next generation of caregivers chart their career paths .

As so many of these achievements would not have been possible without your support, this report celebrates your philanthropy and recognizes the many ways in which your gifts have helped improve the lives of those whom we are privileged to serve .

Among the highlights of the past year:

– Raised $1 .4 million in revenue, with $640,000 directed toward mission purposes

– Awarded an unprecedented $90,000 in scholarships to 74 students pursuing healthcare professions, including 36 first-time recipients

– Assisted in the purchase of two new patient simulators for PACCAR Medical Education Center

– Conducted first annual caregiver campaign, raising $26,000 from 800 caregivers

Another notable happening was the retirement of Ralph Metzger as the Foundation’s Executive Director last August . Since the Foundation’s inception in 2002, Ralph’s leadership established a strong and broad base of philanthropic support and a legacy of giving from which we can continue to grow .

Under Ralph’s leadership, the Foundation embarked on its first capital campaign – a $5 million effort that resulted in the PACCAR Medical Education Center, now home to a clinical training center and Graduate Medical Education program known across the nation .

It’s been 10 years since that ambitious undertaking and we are poised again to move in an exciting new direction .

As part of a five-year master facility plan rolled out in January, 2016, Adena Health System is undertaking a number of major capital projects, with the first of those being Adena Regional Medical Center’s Emergency Department .

Arguably one of the highest priorities in years, the expansion and renovation of the Emergency Department is necessary to meet today’s healthcare demands and reaffirms our commitment to providing the state-of-the-art, compassionate care our patients and community have come to expect from Adena .

With building renovations already underway, the Foundation is excited to launch a $3 million campaign, Give to Growth in Spring, 2017 . When complete, the new Emergency Department will triple in size, streamline care and dramatically reduce wait times while improving patient privacy and comfort .

I hope in coming months, we can count on your generous support of this vital project for the community . But whether you join us in support of the Emergency Department campaign or continue to support the many other programs and services benefitting patients, we are truly grateful for your commitment . It really does make a tremendous difference .

Thank you for your continued support .

Sincerely,

Lana Fairchild Chair & President

About the FoundationAdena Health Foundation was created on January 7, 2002 by the Board of Trustees of Adena Health System to support its mission and charitable purposes . The Foundation is separately incorporated as tax-exempt under IRC 501(c)(3) and as a supporting organization under IRC 509(a)(3) . Contributions to the Foundation are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law .

Our Southern Ohio region is fortunate that Adena Health System is locally managed and controlled, as it has been since 1895 . It is financially healthy and growing, which enables it to continually expand healthcare services to area residents . By supporting the Foundation and donating close to home, you are helping Adena to fulfill its obligation to meet the ever-increasing demand for healthcare in our area .

“Philanthropy” translates from Greek to mean “love for mankind .” Adena Health Foundation broadens the meaning by creating an environment for giving that satisfies a donor’s desire to make good things happen close to home .

Because we believe that everyone in Southern Ohio deserves access to the best healthcare close to home, the Foundation serves five important functions:

n It is a focal point for giving for health and patient care .

n It translates gifts into special projects in a health system that improves health and wellness in the community .

n It maintains funds for donors who designate their gifts for special programs and the unique needs of our patients .

“GIVING NOURISHES BELIEF IN OTHERS .”

n It reduces the health system’s need to borrow for new facilities, renovations and equipment, thereby freeing up operating revenue for expanding patient care .

n It provides accountability to donors .

Since its inception, the Foundation has received over $17 million in philanthropic support and grants, including that which is donated directly to the Health System . Based upon current net assets of $4,393,640, annual mission-related expenditures in 2016 were over $640,000 . Foundation operating expenses are paid directly by the Health System . For donors, this means that 100% of donations are expended according to the donor’s purpose .

The Foundation has no donor-advised funds or permanent endowments . The Board’s expectation is that donations are to be used as intended by the donor for impact now, rather for endowment building .

A dedicated team of adult and teenage volunteers continue to make the Volunteer Advisory Council a tremendously valuable resource for Adena . Volunteers assist with countless tasks throughout the hospital, including patient transport and discharge, mail delivery and the operation of the Sugarloaf Gift Shop .

In 2016, the VAC donated $250,000, which was used to support the Volunteer Scholarship Fund and purchase important items of equipment and patient comfort items for the hospital . Since the Foundation began keeping records, the VAC has contributed $4,000,000 in support of the hospital and the Foundation .

In 1895, the Women’s Board, then known as the Board of Lady Managers, along with a dozen local churches, founded the Chillicothe Hospital . The original board was responsible for management of the early hospital, as well as fund raising . Today, the Women’s Board devotes its efforts to several annual fundraising events, including the Spring Plant Sale and charity dance .

In 2016, the Women’s Board donated a total of $26,000 and supported a range of projects, including $10,000 for the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) program that helps victims of sexual assault and physical abuse and $8,000 for the Volunteer Scholarship Fund . Since the Foundation began keeping records, the Women’s Board has given over $826,000 in support of the hospital .

Adena is leading the region with access to state-of-the-art emergency care . Adena Health Foundation is supporting Adena’s Emergency Department Expansion by conducting a $3,000,000 capital campaign .

The Emergency Department expansion will nearly triple the size of Adena’s current Emergency Department, growing from 16,500 to 59,000 square feet . The added space will provide additional treatment rooms and patient care areas . By growing, we will be able to handle 19,000 more patient visits each year . With a fundraising goal of $3 million and a total cost of $36 .1 million, this major community investment will align Adena with 21st century practices and will give people in our region the emergency experience they deserve and expect for many years to come .

COMMUNITY GIVING DOES GOOD

This project not only heralds an exciting rebirth for Adena, but it recognizes 130 years of progress along a path blazed primarily by dedicated community members and volunteers, without whose work Adena’s growth would not have been possible .

As a commitment to our future, the Foundation is asking you to invest for our deserving patients, our dedicated physicians and the health of our entire community . We have various levels of giving as well as naming opportunities for rooms and other Emergency Department spaces .

To learn more and make your investment, please contact Sheila Buckley at 740-779-8718, sbuckley@adena .org . Learn more at www .adena .org/givetogrowth .

Endowment Funds may be designated from time-to-time by the Board of Directors . The minimum amount to establish a named fund is $20,000, which may be paid over a number of years . No endowment fund is considered

“permanent,” because future needs may change and the original purpose for a fund may not always exist .

THE SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENTS

The Adena Healthcare Scholarships Endowment was created in 2002 to assist students in a variety of healthcare education tracks . This fund, which includes the Reginald Blue Scholarship Fund, was established by a $100,000 bequest for nursing education .

We are very grateful for the future-oriented generosity of individuals who expressed their belief in our mission by including the Adena Health Foundation or the Adena Health System in their living trusts and estate plans:

Through their wills, estates, trusts and life insurance, these individuals have created lasting legacies that will serve healthcare in southern Ohio for years to come . Legacy giving requires professional assistance . Even during their lifetime, donors can redirect to charities a portion of their assets and estates that would otherwise pay taxes or estate fees .

If doing good for healthcare and education aligns with your charitable interests and you have questions about how estate planning can help fulfill your intentions, please contact the Foundation and consult your professional advisor . Excellent information and calculators also are available on the Foundation’s website at www .adena .org/foundation .

Adena Cancer Center staff hosted and organized Sing for Survival at PACCAR Medical Education Center . The day-long event featured music from a variety of gospel, country and contemporary Christian groups while raising awareness for cancer . The idea came from a cancer patient, who not only recruited the talent but performed as well .

The Adena Health System vendor fair on October 31 brought in $11,500 in donations from caregivers who donate 100% of their

commissions to the Cancer Fund . Since its inception five years ago, total giving to the Cancer Fund exceeds $85,000 .

NovemberAdena Pike Medical Center’s Festival of Trees on November 10 at Bristol Village in Waverly, offered guests many beautiful holiday items on which to bid . The event netted $16,000 for the Pike Fund, which supports charitable projects at APMC .

The Friends of Hospice annual appeal secured over $8,000 in donations, exceeding last year’s year end giving by more than $7,000 .

DecemberThe Foundation was heartened by the tremendous response to the year end appeal, which raised nearly $22,000 .
