The car ~ scraped of rust by RandWarner and then pamted by Rand, RickIsraelson, Norm Shadwck, Dave Luca,John Redden and Chris Hauf.

We hope to romplete pamting and trimof the car for om Chapter 60th anniver.sary.

The choice of 1930s era green for thiscar will give us a 3-car Pullman greenpassenger car set at the Museum; ron-sisting of DL&W baggage, Erie Stillwellcoach, and Erie-Lackawanna MU-powercar.

Superintendent.

If you have not been out to the IndustryDepot in the last 2 or 3 weeks you have'not seen the new paint on the Pine Fallsand DL&W baggage car.

I always hesitate to list the names of thepeople who do the work. That is becauseI do not want to miss someone who hashelped. Chris Hauf has lead the paintingand a fine job he has done.

Bernie Cubitt has done a lot of work onthe Stillwell Coach. His latest adven-ture was saving the roof. Others did alot of work on the cars and we thankthem for a great effort Now if someothers of you are wondering how youcan help save a car roof, there are tworoofs waiting: the Pine Falls andDL&W haggage car.

Excursion Fleet

Let's talk about Fall rides on TheOntario Midland. The Richard Tickner,Hamilton Fish, and Charles Whitmanneed your help to polish the windows soour Fall passengers can see the foliage.Those are the names of New YorkGovernors given to the NYC coachesthat are part of our stainless steel fleet.The David B. Hill is also one but he isnot able to be used on our Fall train.The other two, 2567 & 2568, are' usedbut were not named bY the NYC RRAnyway, all must have their windowspolished before September 14th, the dayof the first trip.

The coaches are now at the HojackYards in Webster. I will be there everyMonday and Wednesday evening sowon't you please come over and polishsome windows. It is not a hard job, it is .just like waxing a car.

We have 2 ladders, so YW can reach thewindows, but we would like to haveseveral more so more people couldpolish at the same time. If you have an8 to 10ft. ladder please bring it out orcall for pick up. If you can only comeduring the day give me a call and I willbe glad to meet you at the Hojack Yardin Webster at the tracks most any day.

Amtrak Reportby James East

On July 27 at a joint committee meetingof the House and Senate, the 1/2 centproposed gasoline tax as a source ofAmtrak's dedicated funding was turneddown. Although the Senate supportedthe bill, the House did not. A jointagreement bY the committee proposedand adopted funding of 2.3 billiondollars over the next 2 year whichamounts to approximately the sameamount as the 1/2 cent gasoline tax.Senator William Roth, (D-Delaware)statement of July 28, 1997 said that thisis a giant step forward for Amtrak as itwill provide a dedicated source ofcapital improvements for the Amtraksystem. The Amtrak reauthorizationmust also be passed by Congress andreforms to the Amtrak system must beput in place before these capital fundingimprovements can be used. The Amtrakreauthorization bill will probably not beconsidered bYCongress until after LaborDay.

A giant positive step bY Congress hasbeen taken but is still no guarantee thatAmtrak will survive. The reauthoriza-tion bill must be passed plus otherreforms that have held Amtrak backfrom competing and must be donebefore the September 30, 1997 deadline.

All forms of transportation in the UnitedStates are subsidized from government.Billions of dollars have and are beingspent for new and improved highways.The airline industry Federal AviationAdministration is entirely funded by ourgovernment as well as all the equipmentto control the safety of the airlineindustry and passengers. The building ofairports is done bY local, state andfederal tax dollars. Amtrak serves mil-lions of passengers but its funding hasbeen reduced almost every year. Arecent proposal bY the House of Repre-sentatives would give Amtrak its lowestoperational funding in 20 years.

The cost of badly needed Amtrakcoaches is 4 million dollars for twocoaches which can carry 164 passengers.The cost of one 737-400 aircraft capableof carrying 150 passengers is 44 million

dollars! By adding two coaches to eachAmtrak train traveling through Roches-ter only increases the fuel use by 15%.•

At a recent news conference at Roches-ter's Amtrak Station, New York StateAssemblyman David Koon spoke onbehalf of Amtrak and the supportAmtrak needs. Amtrak, Louise Slaugh-ter Office, as well as the RochesterChapter NRHS, were also present. Thenew conference was carried bY Chan-nel's 8, 9, 10 and 13.

For somereason. the hand scanner drops 'high-lights' and produces 'fussy' scans. Thereis a problem: need to find table-topspace!

Remembering the OldLehigh Valley R.R.

Remember when Rochester had FIVE(5) railroads serving the community?One of the more romantic roads was theold Lehigh Valley. Its tracks terminatedright in the middle of downtown nearthe intersection of South Avenue andCourt Street Its quaint, little yellowbrick depot is still standing on CourtStreet right across from the Main Li-brary.

Well, what's special about this is thatone of our own Chapter members, MaryHamilton Dann, has written a fine newbook about the rnilroad entitled "UpstateOdyssey; The Lehigh Valley Railroad inWestern New York".

The book is a fine read, has greatpicrures and was written aIler a multi-year research project Mary coupledhere own memories with those of othersand used other research sources to takethe reader back with stories about anostalgic era of steam and early diesels.

Dick Barrett donates 21 books!Richard C. Barrett, also a Chaptermember and past president, is acting aspublisher for the book. Through hisgenerosity he has donated one case oftwenty-one books to the chapter. Priceto members: $29.95. AU Proceeds willgo 10 the Building Fund.

Mary Hamilton Dann to signbooks, Sept. 14th

What's more, on Sunday, September14th, Mary Hamilton Dauu \\ill person-ally autograph her new book at a specialbook signing session in the New YorkTransportation Museum's gallery roomat 1:00 PM. It's a unique opportunity tospeak with one of our most knowledge-able members about a very distinctivernilroad.

And, we do own LV 211 with it uniqueCornell red and bright yellow stripedlivery. It's our own wonderful artifactfrom the heydays of that once greatroad.

A Book Review:

Upstate Odyssey, The LehighValley Railroad in Western

New Yorkby Mary Hamilton Dauu

As soon as I heard about this book, Iknew that I'd have to get a copy. I havebeen a Lehigh Valley fan for a long timeand recall going to the LV yard atIthaca back in the early fifties on dayswhen the Cornell football team wasplaying. Often a pri'"lIte car hadbrought loyal Cornel\ians/LV brass tothe game. Those Cornell red privatecars attracted me mightily. Once akindly car attendant allowed my wife anI to come aboard and check out theopulence. Later, I spent many happyhours hanging out at Rochester Juuc-tion.

Thus, I had great expectations for thisbook. Perhaps someone with no upstateNew York roots would be able to passthis book by, but for me it is truly agem. Like any book you really like, thisone is all too short, but its 136 pages doget the job done and very well. Sure.one could wish for pictures in color, butmost of the many historical black-and-white pictures weren't shot in colorany \\"lIY.

This is a very easy book to read. Theauthor's style is almost telegraphic. Shehas set down the facts directly andsimply, letting the story tell itself. Thebook starts with the inception of the LV.Due respect is paid to Asa Packer,Robert Sayre and Ezra Cornell, all ofwhom saw a need and an opportunityand who followed through with ability,tenacity and good judgment.

The story continues with a completereview of the LV's lines in upstate NewYork, the mainline as well as theRochester, Hemlock and Naplesbranches. The author covers the charac-teristics of the towns on the route, theway of life, the need for mil transporta-tion, the type of commodities shoppedand the usefulness of the LV's passengerservice. Looked at from today's perspec-tive it's hard to imagine that there ever

was a need for rail seIVice Geneva toNaples, but back around the turn of thecentury this line moved good quantitiesof passengers and freight and contrib-uted its share to LV's profits.

The book also contains a nice bonus forupstate rail fans, a chapter on theBuffalo, Rochester & Pittsburg. (Here,in my opinion, is the opportunity foranother interesling book.) I was sur-prised to learn that, "...when the Lehighfinally acknowledged the savings thatwould accrue from burning soft coal inits locomotives, the BR&P was readyand willing to supply it" LV advertis-ing had put such stress on the advan-tages of anthracite that I had assumedthat they had stuck mth it Now I'mcurious about the Lackawanna.

One other thing that deserves attentionis that this book evinces an obviousaffection for the Lehigh Valley. Read it,you'll like it.P.S The author is a member of theRochester Chapter of NRHS.

Private Cars thru Rochester?Lalxi'r Day weekend, The AmericanAssociation of Private Railroad CarOwners will depart from Chicago ontheir trip via Conrail to Bretton Woods,NH for their 1997 convention.

There is a possibility that alert Roches-terians will be able to see this 'fleet' ofprivate cars. The itinerary ouly indi-cates a stop in Syracuse. which promisesa likely Rochester passage. If so, thistrain of cars should pass on August 30at about 8 PM eastward. This is achattered Amtrak trip, not attached toan existing Amtrak train.

The Lucas will not be onboard this time;they are driving to the convention. Thiseditor hopes someone will be able to getsome pictures for publication.

ER's Chartered Train SuccessSteve Dagley partook of the East Roch-ester's chartered Amtrak train to Al.bany. Steve repotts the train, whichadded an extra car, was a sellout. Healso said he had a great time helping theVtllage celebrating its lOOthAnniversary.

Steamtown Trip: Part 11(ContinuedfromJulyThe Semaphore, pg2)

As the bus pulled into the SteamtownNational Park lot, we got a glimpse ofthe "Big Boy" and several of the othermany exhibits that would keep us busyfor several hours. Our tour guide,David Crosby, had been with Steamtownfor seven years and, unquestionably, atrue fan of RR history. He took usthroughout most of the complex (l thinkDave Luca explored it ALL), pointingout the various restoration projects andfacilities and how much was done tobring a somewhat battered facility to itspresent state.

Mr. Crosby also accompanied us on thetrain ride behind CN #3254 steamer thatday. Our car was behind the engine,and with the windows open, we got to'enjoy' the influx of water spray, and ofcinders when the engine went through atunnel! To this rider, the trip was moreinteresting from the passenger view thanthe Kane trip, even though it wasshorter. Under high highway bridges,past two reser-voirs, by alake, through atunnel, bystream beds onto Moscow.Here at a neatstation, wererefreshments(at fair prices)through thecourtesy of, ..Lackawanna &WyomingChapter, NRHSwho is usingthe proceeds torestore Boston& Maine Pacific #3713. The sun wasshining, although a cloud burst ha1 justwent through. On the return trip, the'heavens' opened up to add a littlesomething extra to our experience. Aswe passed under those highway bridges,the water poured from the overheaddrains like small waterfalls.

The Raddison Inn, in the former DL&Wstationlheadquarters, was well appointedwith comfortable rooms. The dining

.-room occupies the 'great' hall (thewaiting room) with maIbled walls ani..floor, and overhead was a stained g1a.canopy.The evening meal, which I enjoyed withMr. and Mrs. Robert Nichols, was onthe 'classy' side. The chef expected usto 'butter' our bread with olive oil(!); weasked for butter, which was most flavor-ful. The meal was excellent, andconsidering the surroundings, wasmuch more fairly priced than one wouldfind in Rochester.

But aIas, it was time to board the bus forour return trip. Taking the SouthernTier Expressway offered Mike Byrne topoint out various artifacts of area rail-roads, present and past.

At Horseheads, we stopped for ourevening meal. From the lack of autos inthe parking lot, one would have to pauseabout the qnality of their offerings, butthey was good. Those who ordered thefish entree had to wait a while, whichindicated that it was being freshlyprepared.

(About those deer we saw on 1-390 onthe way home: their cousins invaded mytomato patch last evening, eating everygreen tomato - even though the plantswere enclosed in nettingl)Dave Luca stated that he was glad tofinally see that his tax dollars werebeing used for something he was in~ested in. Synopsis of the 6(1/1 Festivities(Continuedfrom Page I)

The watchman's shanty was scrapped andpainted white. IlS interior was also painted,pictures hung of the waIls, and OperationLifesaver materials position on the bench.Added was the watchman's "STOP" sign.The Lackawanna baggage car received afresh coat of Pullman green with yellowlettering.A number of members were dressed for theoccasion: Bob Fitch was in his post WWIIArmy trniform (and it filS!)

• Luca. Hulings and others were wearing biboveraIls with caps of the time era.Janet Dittmer was hostess in the Pine Falls,with an appropriate 'flowered' dress. Shealso served iced tea to visitors.Luca accumulated a number of Burma Shaveadages. and displayed them in the placardstands previously built by Dan Waterstraal.In addition, Janet Dittmer designed, and BillLimberg painted up a set in traditionalroadside format and positioned them track-side for track car riders to read.

Unfortunately, we did not receive the publicitythat honored us for the 25th Anniversary of theDepot with the associated Ground Breakingeeremouies (no dignitaries present?). SoSaturday visitations were light; the Sundayvisitor tally was probably above normal. (GS)
