Students experiment with a variety of techniques and materials that may include drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, weaving, and pottery. CAREER & TECHNICAL EDUCATION CAREER EXPLORATIONS Course #: CTE88P Grade: 8 Length: One Quarter or One Semester Prerequisite: None Fee: None Career Exploration provides opportunity to explore careers, pathways, education/training, self-assessments, and develop employability and communication skills, including interviewing, resume/portfolio building, job search, effective workplace skills, and financial literacy. Students will gain knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors necessary for succeeding in the world of work. The student explores real life work through observation and/or active participation. Students will learn the relationship between education and becoming gainfully employed through self-discovery, goal setting, and career planning. COMPUTER ESSENTIALS Course #: CTE76 Grade: 7 Length: One Quarter or One Semester Prerequisite: None Fee: Required ($10 maximum) Computer Essentials will focus on basic computer skills and responsible computer use. Students will develop a basic understanding of Internet safety, ethical computer use, keyboarding, opening and closing software files, accessing and saving to the school server, copying and pasting files or text, copyright laws, and searching the Internet. This course will cover basic and intermediate skills and shortcuts using, but not limited to the Adobe, Microsoft Office and iLife suites. This class will not be limited to the use of computers. We will explore digital cameras and video as well. Course will vary from 9 to 18 weeks. A 9-week course offering will be introductory. An 18-week course will explore content in greater depth.

EXPLORING COMPUTER APPLICATIONS Course #: CTE80 Grade: 8 Length: One Quarter or One Semester Prerequisite: None Fee: Required ($10 maximum) Exploring Computer Applications will focus on learning advanced computer application skills and tools. Keyboarding, Internet safety, and ethical computer use, including copyright laws, will also be components of this class. Students will learn and expand on practical uses for applications, which may include the Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, and the iLife Suite. Students will use web-based applications and learn how to responsibly and ethically interact in the web-based world through blogs and online collaborative tools, such as Google Docs. Course will vary from 9 to 18 weeks. A 9-week course offering will be introductory. An 18-week course will explore content in greater depth. FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCES II Course #: CTE86 Grade: 8 Length: One Quarter or One Semester Prerequisite: None Fee: Required ($15 maximum) In Family & Consumer Sciences II, students will explore and practice life skills needed for the varied roles in adult life, such as wage earner, consumer of resources, family/group member, community member, and care-giving/parenting, while using current technology and resources. Depending on the school resources, needs, and schedule, this course may vary as to topics taught and in length from 9-weeks (one quarter) to 18 weeks (one semester). A 9-week offering will be introductory with limited topics. An 18-week course offering will explore chosen topics in greater depth. INTRODUCTION TO SAFETY (Pilot: NPMS) Course #: CTE50P Grade: 7-8 Length: One Quarter Prerequisite: None Fee: Required ($10 maximum) Introduction to Safety will be designed to increase student awareness of self-care. Students will be introduced on how to use common items in emergency/survival situations. CPR/First Aid, fire safety, and Alaska survival skills will be introduced during the class. Biological awareness of the human body system as it relates to survival, concentration on conditions in Alaska: hypothermia, frostbite and water safety will be investigated. Information on fire safety: fire extinguishers, kitchen fires, how to build a fire safely in the wilderness will also be explored.

INTRODUCTION TO VIDEO PRODUCTION

Course #: CTE82 Grade: 8 Length: One Semester Prerequisite: None Fee: None Introduction to Video Production is a semester-long course, which students will work both independently and in groups to learn the skills involved with producing informational videos. Students will learn pre-production skills including topic selection, interviewing, research, using still cameras, video cameras, microphones, and tripods. Students will demonstrate knowledge of the components of video production including set, lighting and sound. Students will use video editing software to create original productions. Students will develop writing and public speaking skills as they produce videos for a variety of audiences. Self-motivation and a willingness to work outside of class are critical skills for students in the class.

ENGLISH ADVANCED ENGLISH 8

(Meets English 8 Requirement) Course #: ENG18 Grade: 8 Length: Two Semesters Prerequisite: An average of B or better in

English 7 and Teacher Recommendation

Advanced English 8 emphasizes literature, writing, and critical thinking skills through a combination of essays, literature, and speaking experiences. This course provides an in-depth study of the genres of literature, and a variety of writing experiences, including the writing process. Effectively apply literary analysis, research, and conventions. Vocabulary study is derived from various works of literature including SAT vocabulary enrichment. ENGLISH 7 (Required) Course #: ENG71 Grade: 7 Length: Two Semesters Prerequisite: None English 7 emphasizes both the critical exploration of literature and the writing process. Students read a variety of genres and utilize basic literary terms and forms as basis for discussion, writing topics, and models. As readers respond to literature, they measure their own experiences against those of others, connecting literature to real life, other texts, and media. Students write for a variety of purposes and audiences, and conventions of good writing (such as grammar, vocabulary, spelling, sentence, and paragraph structures) are studied and applied. Instructors are encouraged to utilize 6+1 Traits®, Thinking Maps®, and CRISS (Creating Independence through Student Owned Strategies).

Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation English Workshop focuses on the reading of various types of literature, using decoding and comprehension strategies to build fluency and understanding of different types of texts. This course provides a variety of structures to increase the reading skill and enjoyment of reading for students who are reading below grade level. JOURNALISM & PUBLICATION Course #: ENG11 = Quarter Course #: ENG12 = Semester Grade: 7 - 8 Length: One Quarter or One Semester Prerequisite: None Journalism and Publication teaches the steps involved in publishing. Production of publications includes article writing, page layout and design, scheduling of projects, meeting deadlines, revising, and editing. Students will explore publishing in various media.

LITERATURE 7 Course #: ENG72 = Semester Course #: ENG73 = Quarter Grade: 7 Length: One Quarter or One Semester Prerequisite: None Literature 7 offers insights for readers by showing life’s uncertainties, complexities, and imperfections. As readers respond to literature, they measure their own experiences against those of others, connecting literature to real life, other texts, and media. This exploration of print and non-print media encourages critical, reflective readers. LITERATURE 8 Course #: ENG82 = Semester Course #: ENG08 = Quarter Grade: 8 Length: One Quarter or One Semester Prerequisite: None Literature 8 focuses on the reading of various types of literature with an emphasis on reading as a process. The course will include an introduction to elements of literature, enhancement of comprehension skills, application of literature to real-life situations, and integration of reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities. It will also integrate interdisciplinary material and nonfiction from a variety of media. NEWCOMER ENGLISH I A&B Course #: ENG41 = A Course #: ENG42 = B Grade: 7 - 8 Length: One or Two Semesters Prerequisite: Student must be a part of

the ELL Program at Entering (Level 1) through Developing (Level 3) proficiency levels and Teacher Recommendation

Newcomer English I is designed to be taken simultaneously by different levels of students. Teacher differentiation using SIOP, Kagan©, and other appropriate research-based strategies for language acquisition will address and meet the needs of various English Language Learner (ELL) development levels. Students will work towards proficiency in Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP). The main focus of this course is to increase English

vocabulary for academic and social situations through an increase in reading/listening comprehension, an improvement in student ability to express thoughts through writing, an expansion of student resources and tools that will ensure academic excellence and independence, and an ability to actively participate in various cultural environments. Topics include conflict resolution, peer pressure, decision-making skills, human sexuality, and the impact of drug abuse. Resources for finding help and support will be introduced and the development of healthy attitudes and behaviors are emphasized.

physical education uniform) Integrated Health/P.E. is essential for students to learn in tandem resulting in maximum efficiency and effectiveness in supporting life-long concepts of health and well-being. The core concepts of Integrated Health/P.E. have a natural evolution in which the physical experience of P.E. builds on and supports the integration and internalization of health concepts and knowledge within students. To embrace the unique challenges of Alaska’s geographic location, cultural diversity, climate and local school structure, indoor and outdoor facilities will be utilized.

MATHEMATICS ~FULL YEAR REQUIRED – SELECT FROM THE FOLLOWING~

ADVANCED 7th GRADE MATH (Pilot: Districtwide) Course #: MAT92P Grade: 7 Length: Two Semesters Prerequisite: Advanced 6th Grade Math

or Teacher Recommendation Advanced Math 7 will continue to build on Advanced 6th Grade Math, demanding a faster pace for instruction and learning. Advanced 7th Grade Math will focus on the real number system, linear expressions and equations, systems of equations, functions, drawing statistical inferences, and two- and three-dimensional shapes and figures. MATHEMATICS 7 Course #: MAT71/72 = Semester Course #: MAT73 = Year Grade: 7 Length: Two Semesters Prerequisite: None Math 7 provides students with a solid foundation in mathematics through a broad study of numbers and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, statistics, and probability. By concentrating on computational accuracy and efficiency, students will be able to solve problems by manipulating fractions, decimals, and percentages. Students will be able to select and use appropriate units of measurement and apply basic geometric concepts. All topics will require mathematical reasoning and communication.

MATHEMATICS 8 Course #: MAT81/82 = Semester Course #: MAT83 = Year Grade: 8 Length: Two Semesters Prerequisite: 7th grade students may be

enrolled if they meet 8th grade readiness standards and are Teacher Recommended

Math 8 is an in-depth study of mathematical concepts, with an emphasis on practical application, problem solving, and mathematical communication. Students will be provided the foundation to be successful in high school mathematic courses by studying numbers and operations, algebra, geometry, measurements, statistics and probabilities. ALGEBRA I (High School Level) Course #: MA201/202 Grade: 7 - 8 Length: Two Semesters Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation Algebra I thoroughly covers linear functions, linear inequalities, concept of functions, real numbers, manipulating algebraic symbols, and solving real world problems using algebraic expressions and equations. The topics of probability, statistics, trigonometry, quadratic equations, factoring, graphing quadratic functions, and the coordinate grid system will be incorporated. Technology is incorporated as appropriate during the course.

physical education uniform) Pool covers a wide variety of pool activities. Non-swimmers will receive one-on-one or small group instruction to develop basic swimming skills. All students will have the opportunity to learn all four basic swim strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Enrichment activities will include water polo, cold-water safety/rescue, canoe skills, and basic diving skills. Enrichment activities may also include snorkeling, advanced diving skills, water slides, various games, open gym, and shuffleboard. Students will be assessed and graded based on daily participation, swimming technique, fitness, and speed. Students will also have recreational use of the swimming pool. This quarter-long class includes a swim meet where students can win ribbons in two of four events. Swimsuit, towel, and a waterproof bag are required. Goggles are very strongly recommended.
