HOW THEY GOT HERE • All four Panthers earned automatic qualifying spots out of the ACC Championship March 4 in Raleigh, N.C. in their last time out. • Forys entered the Championship as the No. 1 seed at 133 pounds and needed just one win to punch his ticket to St. Louis. He did just that as he picked up an 8-4 win over Virginia Tech’s Dennis Gustafson in the semifinals. The Pittsburgh native then faced familiar foe Jamal Morris of NC State where he won in a 5-0 decision en route to his first ACC title. • Rahmani entered his first conference championship as the No. 3 seed and also just needed one win to secure his spot to NCAAs. The 157-pounder won his first match by major decision before avenging a regular season loss as he recorded a 4-2 win over NC State’s Thomas Bullard. In the finals, Rahmani made a statement by picking up a 13-5 major decision over top-seeded Sal Mastriani of Virginia Tech. • Campbell’s situation at 165 pounds was nearly identical to Forys: entered as the No. 1 seed and needed to reach the finals to earn an automatic qualification. The Pittsburgh native received a first round bye before cruising to a 12-4 decision over Virginia’s Ray Bethea. In the finals, the sophomore captured his first ACC title after shutting out NC State’s Brian Hamann, 7-0. • Although placing third at the Championship, Solomon was one of four heavyweights to earn an automatic bid out of the ACC. Wrestling Championships beginning Thursday, March 16 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis.

• Junior Dom Forys (133), redshirt freshman Taleb Rahmani (157), sophomore TeShan Campbell (165) and redshirt junior Ryan Solomon (285) will represent the University of Pittsburgh.

• All championship prime-time matches will be broadcast live on ESPNU/ESPN, while all matches on every mat will be streamed live on ESPN3/WatchESPN.

HOW THEY GOT HERE• All four Panthers earned automatic qualifying spots

• The 2015 Championships saw Pitt’s 174-pounder Tyler Wilps earn a runner-up finish.

• St. Louis first hosted in 2000. Iowa and Iowa State took the top two places that year.

• The Scottrade Center is home to the St. Louis Blues NHL team, which first opened its doors in 1994, seats 22,000 people.

alumni and are among some familiar faces in St. Louis as five other former Panthers will be coaching at this year’s NCAA Championships:

ACC WRESTLERS OF THE WEEK• Ryan Solomon and Dom Forys each collected the

weekly honor of two separate occassions this season.• Ryan Solomon was tabbed ACC Wrestler of the Week

Tuesday, Feb. 21 after snapping then-ranked No. 3 Jacob Kasper’s (Duke) 20-match win streak.

• Dom Forys was named ACC Co-Wrestler of the Week alongside NC State’s Michael Macchiavello Tuesday, Feb. 14. The 133-pounder earned the honor after winning in a 6-2 decision over two-time All-American Earl Hall of Iowa State Friday, Feb. 10. Hall, the No. 12 133-pounder in the country, ended Forys season a year ago in the round of 12 at the NCAA Championships. Forys then defeated Will Mason of Virginia, 10-8, Sunday, Feb. 12, helping Pitt earn its first ACC dual win of the season.

• After capturing his third Keystone Classic title at 133 pounds, Dom Forys was named ACC Wrestler of the week Nov. 23.

• Pitt’s heavyweight Ryan Solomon was named ACC Co-Wrestler of the Week for the first time in his career, Tuesday, Nov. 16, after lifting the Panthers to a 20-16 win over Edinboro Sunday, Nov. 13.

PITT IN THE POLLS• As a team, the Panthers rank No. 23 in the final USA

Today/NWCA Coaches Poll.• Pitt entered the season ranked No. 23 and reached as

high as No. 21.• Pitt is one of three ACC teams ranked among the top

25 with Virginia Tech checking in at No. 4 and NC State ranking eighth.

NCAA ANNOUNCES QUALIFIER ALLOCATIONS• On Feb. 23, the NCAA announced that the ACC

received 30 qualifier allocations for the 2017 NCAA Championships (March 16-18).

• The ACC’s 30 qualifier spots rank fifth among the eight top NCAA Division I wrestling conferences. The Big Ten leads all conferences with 76 spots, while the EIWA comes in second with 42. Last year the ACC received 34 allocations, the most in conference history.

• Each qualifying tournament was awarded spots per weight class based on current year data. Each wrestler was measured on the following: Division I winning percentage at the weight class; ratings percentage index (RPI); and coaches’ ranking.

• After all of the qualifying events have concluded, the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee will meet in-person to select the remaining 49 at-large qualifiers, which will be announced on March 7. All weight classes will consist of 33 wrestlers. The at-large selections will be made based on the following criteria: head-to-head competition; quality wins; coaches’ ranking; results against common opponents; RPI; qualifying event placement; and winning percentage.

PITT ANNOUNCES COACHING CHANGE• The University of Pittsburgh announced Jan. 19 that

Jason Peters, the Panthers’ head coach since 2013, is no longer with the University.

• Assistant coaches Matt Kocher and Drew Headlee will serve as acting co-head coaches for the remainder of the 2017 season.

• Since the change, Kocher and Headlee are 4-3 this season.

ALL-AMERICAN COACHING STAFF• The Pitt coaching staff of acting co-head coaches Matt

Kocher (Pitt, ‘08) and Drew Headlee (Pitt, ‘08), as well as volunteer assistant coach Tyler Nauman (Pitt, ‘12) are all former Pitt wrestlers and All-Americans.

• The three coaches combine for a 379-113 overall record during their time as Panthers.

• Nauman garnered All-America accolades in 2012 and 2010, while Kocher and Headlee reached All-America status in 2007 and 2005, respectively.

• Kocher ranks second in program history behind Pat Santoro with 151 career wins and is one of 12 Pitt wrestlers to qualify for NCAA’s four times.

• Headlee was a three-time NCAA qualifier and two-time EWL champion.

• Nauman ranks third behind Kocher in program career wins with 141 and also ranks third in career falls at Pitt behind Ryan Tomei. Nauman is also a four-time EWL champion.

PANTHERS WIN FINAL THREE DUALS• Pitt concluded the regular season 11-5 overall with a

2-3 mark against ACC opponents, while finishing third in the conference.

• The Panthers 11 wins mark the most in a season since the 2013-14 campaign.

• Pitt claimed its final three duals of the season over Iowa State, Virginia and Duke, outscoring its opponents 69-38.

PITT EARNS EIGHTH WIN OF SEASON AT VMI• In their second of two duals in the state of Virginia the

weekend of Jan. 20, the Panthers bounced back after a loss to No. 5 Virginia.

• Pitt downed VMI Jan. 21, taking nine of 10 bouts from the Keydets en route to a 37-6 final score.

• Of the nine victories, four Panthers were put up wins with bonus points including two pins and two technical falls.

PANTHERS SWEEP AT PITT DUALS• Pitt faced three opponents Jan. 14 in the Fitzgerald

Field House for the annual Pitt Duals.• The Panthers dominated their opponents, taking

down Franklin & Marshall 46-0, Davidson 45-0, and Bloomsburg 32-6.

• Pitt hosted 12 total teams on the day including NC State and West Virginia.

ZANETTA REACHES PODIUM AT MIDLANDS• Redshirt junior Nick Zanetta was the lone Panther

to earn a spot on the podium at the 54th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships Dec. 30.

• Zanetta became the 28th top-eight finisher from Pitt at Midlands.

• The Pittsburgh native, wrestling at 141 pounds, fielded his way through one of the top tournaments in the country, finishing 5-3 for eighth place.

• Entering the tournament unseeded, Zanetta fell in the round of 16 to sixth-ranked Anthony Ashnault of Rutgers.

• In consolation, Zanetta picked up three wins, advancing him to the consolation quarterfinals where he fell to Iowa State’s Kenan Storr in sudden victory.

• Zanetta finished eighth after dropping a 4-1 decision to Chris Carton of Iowa.

PITT TAKES DOWN WVU, IMPROVES TO 4-2• Clashing for the 62nd time in program history, the

Panthers earned their fourth win of the season after defeating West Virginia Dec. 11.

• Six Pitt wrestlers recorded wins en route to the 23-15 team victory.

• LJ Bentley earned his first dual win of the season, picking up a 12-3 major decision over Devin Brown.

• Competing in just his second dual of his career, redshirt freshman Taleb Rahmani pinned Dayton Garrett in 55 seconds at 157 pounds, extending Pitt’s team lead to 13-6.

• Freshman Austin Bell picked up his first career dual win as he shutout Ty Millward, 9-0, at 174 pounds.

PITT FINISHES SECOND AT KEYSTONE CLASSIC• The Panthers finished second with 121.5 points behind

Penn State who finished with 210 points.• Pitt, who won the team title a year ago, last earned a

runner-up finish in 2008 and finished fourth in 2014 and 2013.

• Dom Forys captured his third individual title wrestling at 133 pounds, finishing 3-1 on the day.

PITT STARTS SEASON 3-0• The Panthers opened the season at the Mountaineer

Duals, picking up two early wins.• Pitt first defeated Ohio, 21-16, before posting a 21-13 win

over Campbell.• Pitt earned its third win of the season after defeating

Edinboro, 20-16, on the road Nov. 13.• Zach Bruce (197) and Ryan Solomon (285) helped

secure the team victory, while TeShan Campbell (who was unranked at the time) upset 11th-ranked Austin Matthews at 165.

• Heading into the final bout of the day, Pitt trailed 16-14. Solomon pinned Billy Miller in 2:58 lifting the Panthers to victory.

FIERCE FORYS RETURNS• Forys is back for his junior season with the bar raised

higher than last year.• The two-time NCAA qualifier fell short at in the 2016

ACC Championship finals at 133 pounds, falling to Virginia’s George DiCamillo in an 8-4 decision.

• At the NCAA Championships Forys was one win short of earning All-America status after a trip that was highlighted by pinning NC State’s Jamal Morris in 5:38.

• An All-ACC selection, Forys finished his sophomore campaign 28-5 overall, 15-2 in duals, 5-0 against ACC opponents and mixed in a few upsets, going 5-3 against ranked wrestlers.

HOMEGROWN PANTHERS• The Pitt roster sports 15 wrestlers hailing from

Pennsylvania, while seven wrestlers are from the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL).
