2016-17 Florida Tech Men’s Basketball

Billy Mims enters his 12th year at the helm of the Florida Tech men’s basketball team in 2016-17. This season will be his 31st as a head coach and 36th year of coaching overall.

As recently as 2015-16, Mims helped forward Corbin Jackson earn Division II Bulletin All-American Honorable Mention, while also coaching him to his third consecutive Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Year award. In addition, Isaac Spence became the league’s fi rst-ever male student-athlete to be named to the Allstate NABC Good Works Team, recognizing those who have dedicated themselves to bettering the lives of others through giving back to their communities.

In the summer of 2015, Mims took the Panthers on their fi rst-ever trip to London, a 10-day journey in which they toured several attractions and mounted a 4-2 record against professional teams from England.

The 2014-15 season was one of many fi rsts, as Chris Carter and Jermaine Jackson were named Sporting News Preseason All-Americans, the fi rst time in school history two-student athletes had received such honors in the same year. Florida Tech also made its debut on ESPN3 in a pair of road games at NCAA Division I Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson.

Florida Tech opened the year 9-1, winning two games on the road in the SSC vs. SIAC NCAA South Regional Challenge and beating CIAA Champion Livingstone and Peach Belt Conference member Flagler both on the road. Mims also guided the Panthers to a 16-point victory against No. 4 Barry and helped coach Corbin Jackson to his second straight SSC Defensive Player of the Year honor, while Jordan Majors earned the league’s Freshman of the Year award.

Returning a core of junior guards in 2013-14 in Chris Carter and Jermaine Jackson along with center David Usic, redshirt sophomore Corbin Jackson and junior Akeem Johnson joined the trio in the starting lineup. The Panthers got off to a quick start, fi nishing the 2013 portion of their schedule 11-1. The lone loss came on a jumper from 16 feet out with 2.3 seconds remaining. At Palm Beach Atlantic University on Nov. 18, Florida Tech overcame a 13-point defi cit in the second half to defeat the Sailfi sh, 65-69. With the win, Mims became the all-time winningest coach in school history with 126.

12th Season

2016-17 Florida Tech Men’s Basketball

Mims guided newcomer Corbin Jackson to the SSC Defensive Player of the Year, SSC All-Newcomer Team and Daktronics All-South Region Second Team honors while Jermaine Jackson was named to the All-SSC First Team and NABC South District Second Team.

Mims closed out the 2012-13 season just three wins away from tying Andy Russo for most wins all-time by a men’s basketball head coach with 125. He entered the season with a record of 122-108 (.530).

Despite returning just one starter of the 2011-12 squad that fi nished 23-7, 12-4 SSC and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Mims guided a young Panther club to a perfect 9-0 mark in February 2013 to end the regular season. The team fi nished the season 16-11 with two victories over Sunshine State Conference foes and top-25 ranked Florida Southern (No. 6) and Saint Leo (No. 16).

Over the last six seasons, Mims has guided the Panthers to an 83-23 record at the Clemente Center.

Mims was the architect of possibly the greatest season in the program’s history in 2011-12, leading the Crimson and Gray to its fi rst outright Sunshine State Conference Championship and the second round of the NCAA Division II Championship. The Panthers fi nished at 23-7 overall and 12-4 in the SSC. Their 23 wins on the season were the second-most in program history.

FIT’s appearance in the NCAA Tournament was its third in its 45-plus year history and fi rst since the 1989-90 season. The Panthers defeated Saint Leo in the fi rst round and advanced to the second round for the second time ever where they played then No. 2 Alabama-Huntsville.

At home, the Panthers mounted a 17-1 record inside the Clemente Center. In SSC play, they posted a perfect 8-0 record in their gym for the fi rst time ever. They entered the 2012-13 season having won 13 consecutive games on their home fl oor.

While working towards what would be a memorable season, Mims earned his 500th victory as a head coach and his 100th win as the Panthers’ men’s basketball coach.

Since he took over the Florida Tech program, he has coached 13 All-SSC players, 16 SSC Players of the Week, one All-SSC Tournament player, fi ve All-South Region players, one all-district player, one Division II Bulletin National Player of the Month, one SSC Freshman of the Year (Derek Hellemann), two SSC Freshman of the Year runner-ups, one Daktronics All-South Region Player of the Year and one Daktronics Second Team All-American.

Mims and his wife Lynne reside in Rockledge with their children Courtney, Callie and Josh.

ASSISTANT COACHES

DeMario Robinson is set to begin his fi fth season as an assistant coach on the Florida Tech men’s basketball staff in 2016-17.

As lead assistant, Robinson has routinely worked nonstop with Florida Tech’s guards, and as recently as 2015-16 saw both Patrick Anderson and Jermohn Queen both fi nish among the Top-10 in the Sunshine State Conference in assists per game.

Robinson was also infl uencial in the postseason honors of former Florida Tech standout Jermaine Jackson. Jackson led the Panthers in scoring and was second in the SSC in 2013-14, earning All-SSC First Team honors and NABC South District Second Team honors. In addition, Chris Carter fi nished in the Top-10 nationally in assists per game that same season.

Robinson graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in December 2012. He then earned his MBA in May, 2015.

TERRY PARKSTERRY PARKSParks fi rst stint with Florida Tech started prior to the 2011-12 campaign. In addition to developing players and overseeing the program, he increased fan support. He pioneered the BCC Men’s Basketball Booster Club, the BCC High School Summer League and the Terry Parks BCC Summer Camp.

Prior to his tenure at Brevard Community College, Parks was an assistant coach at Division I North Florida and The Citadel. At both institutions, he recruited throughout Florida and Georgia and was responsible for the development of post players.

2015-16 SEASON STATISTICS

2016-17 Florida Tech Men’s Basketball

Founded in 1975, the Sunshine State Conference has risen from a single sport organization to the Division II “Conference of National Champions.” Since its inception, the conference has grown steadily in sports played, membership and national prominence.

Sunshine State Conference schools have won NCAA national championships (99 total) in baseball, softball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s lacrosse, women’s rowing, men’s and women’s tennis and volleyball. They are nationally recognized in men’s and women’s cross country and men’s and women’s swimming. The first NCAA Division II national championship won by an SSC sponsored school was in the spring of 1978. The Florida Southern College baseball team captured the national crown that year.

Over the last 10 years, the SSC has led all 24 Division II conferences in the NCAA Academic Success Rate. Each year, over 1,000 student-athletes are named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll with GPA’s over 3.20 on a 4.00 scale.

Through a wide range of initiatives, the SSC, its member institutions and student-athletes are actively involved in the Florida community. On a conference-wide basis, the SSC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee participates in an annual community service project at Give Kids the World Village in Kissimmee, Florida in addition to fundraising efforts conducted annually for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The Sunshine State Conference is often considered “the conference of champions.” Sunshine State Conference schools have won a total of 99 national championships. Of the current nine members, eight of them have won national championships. These schools include Florida Southern (29), Barry (16), Rollins (15), Tampa (15), Lynn (12), Nova Southeastern (7), Florida Tech (2) and Saint Leo (1). During the 2015-16 athletic year, fi ve SSC schools won national championships: Barry in women’s rowing, Florida Southern in women’s lacrosse, Nova Southeastern in baseball, Rollins in women’s golf and Saint Leo in men’s golf.

THIS IS WHERE WE LIVE

Florida Tech is located in Brevard County on the Space

Coast. As a Brevard university, you will not be surprised

to fi nd out that its fi rst students were engineers who

worked at Cape Canaveral, now known as the Kennedy

Space Center. Not only is the area home to NASA and

many high-tech companies, it just happens to be

minutes from beautiful beaches in Central Florida, a

top vacation destination.

Surfing, fishing, diving, swimming, boating, biking,

canoeing, hiking and sailing are just a few of the

recreational activities you can enjoy on Florida’s

Space Coast.

The Space Coast has a lot more to off er than outdoor

activities. The area has a great zoo, museums, lots of

movie theatres and great restaurants. You’ll want to

visit the downtown area of Melbourne where you can

sit and eat at an outside restaurant on balmy evenings,

hanging out with your friends.

By choosing a Brevard university like Florida Tech, you will

wake up each day knowing that you live in a beautiful

location near the pristine beaches of the Space Coast,

minutes from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center with a vibrant

campus life in scenic and sunny Florida.
