Florida Tech head coach Billy Mims was the architect of possibly the greatest season in the program’s history in 2011-12. He returns for his eighth season on the Panthers’ sideline, his 26th season as a head coach and his 32nd season coaching overall.

Last year, he guided the Crimson and Gray to its first outright Sunshine State Conference Championship and the second round of the NCAA Division II Championship. The Panthers finished at 23-7 overall and 12-4 in the SSC. Their 23 wins on the season were the second-most in program history.

FIT’s appearance in the NCAA Tournament was its third in its 45-plus year history and first since the 1989-90 season. The Panthers defeated Saint Leo in the first round and advanced to the second round for the second time ever where they played then No. 2 Alabama-Huntsville.

At home, the Panthers mounted a 17-1 record inside the Clemente Center. In SSC play, they posted a perfect 8-0 record in their gym for the first time ever. They enter the 2012-13 season having won 13 consecutive games on their home floor.

While working towards what would be a memorable season, Mims earned his 500th victory as a head coach and his 100th win as the Panthers’ men’s basketball coach. Heading into the 2012-13 campaign, he has the third-most wins all-time in Florida Tech men’s basketball history with 107. He trails only Andy Russo (125 wins) and FIT Hall of Famer Tom Folliard Sr. (124 wins).

Mims’ coaching helped Simon Cummings conclude his Panther career with a decorated senior campaign. He was named Daktronics All-South Region, National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District and SSC Player of the Week three times. One of his weekly honors followed a game in which he connected on 10 straight three-pointers to tie a 23-year-old NCAA Division II record. He finished 12-for-15 from the arc and his record-tying feat was highlighted on ESPN SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays.

Mims aided in Cummings and Anthony Jackson signing professional contracts at the conclusion of the season. Cummings plays for the Essex Leopards in the English Basketball League and Jackson plays for Ferrenteria Brenes-Barva of the Costa Rican Basketball Federation.

At the conclusion of the season, City of Melbourne Mayor Harry Goode Jr. issued a proclamation to Mims for his team’s

achievements throughout the season and his career.

The Panthers won 19 games, the third-most under Mims, in 2010-11. Three wins were against nationally ranked opponents at home on the Clemente Center floor. Under his guidance, Justin Sedlak became the program’s second All-American and is now playing his second season of professional basketball and his first with the Solna Vikings in Sweden. In addition to his All-American award, he won several conference and regional awards, including Daktronics South Region Player of the Year in 2011. He closed out his Panther career as the program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,896 points.

Mims led the Panthers to the program’s fifth 20-win season in 2007-08. They began the year with 11 straight wins. Their hot start propelled them to the program’s highest national ranking ever at No. 11. Mims was rewarded for his team’s play by being selected Division II Bulletin National Coach of the Month for December. FIT went on to post a winning conference record for the first time in nine years, largely due to the play of All-American candidate Carl McNally. McNally signed a professional contract with the Milton Keynes Lions in the British Basketball League (BBL) following the season. Now, seven of Mims’ former Panthers have gone on to play professionally overseas at the completion of their collegiate careers.

Since he took over the Florida Tech program, he has coached 13 All-SSC players, 16 SSC Players of the Week, one All-SSC Tournament player, five All-South Region players, one all-district player, one Division II Bulletin National Player of the Month, one SSC Freshman of the Year (Derek Hellemann), two SSC Freshman of the Year runner-ups, one Daktronics All-South Region Player of the Year and one Daktronics Second Team All-American.

Mims came to Florida Tech after one season at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin (UTPB). At UTPB, he set the school record for wins, compiling more victories in one season than the Falcons combined to achieve in the program’s first two years of existence. He produced one NAIA National Player of the Week, Rashad Pride, one NAIA All-American and First Team All-Red River Athletic Conference selection, Marlo Saunders, and one NAIA Academic All-American, Travis Levie. He helped both Saunders and his brother Marcus launch professional careers in London, England, after graduating from UTPB.

He is no stranger to the highly competitive Sunshine State Conference. He spent six seasons as the head coach of Barry University from 1989-94. During his tenure, Barry was ranked as high as seventh in the NCAA Division II South Region. He was the first coach to guide Barry to a SSC Tournament

Championship game. In 1993, he produced Barry’s first-ever Basketball Times First Team All-American, Anthel Hicks. He also coached two All-South Region players, six All-SSC players, two All-SSC Tournament players, six SSC All-Freshman Team members and one SSC Freshman of the Year, Bobby Latham, in 1991.

After coaching at Barry, Mims spent 11 years in the British professional ranks, serving as head coach and director of player personnel for two different clubs: London Leopards and Leicester Riders. In the U.K., he captured three national championships in 1997, 1998 and 2001 and was named league Coach of the Year twice in 1998 by the BBL and 2001 by The Sun, England’s largest daily newspaper. He guided both of his English clubs to National Cup Championships as well - London in 1997 and Leicester in 2001. He was also voted by BBL fans to coach in the prestigious BBL All-Star game on two occasions.

From 1995-96, he was an assistant coach for England’s Senior Men’s National Team in charge of advance scouting of all European opponents.

Mims’ first-ever head coaching job was with Neptune Basketball Club in Cork, Ireland. He led the club to the 1987 Irish National League Championship. He then guided Neptune to the 1987 National Top Four Championship for the first time in the club’s history.

He has spent time as an assistant and associate head coach at four different colleges: College of Charleston (S.C.), Lander College (S.C.), Winthrop College (S.C.) and Chowan College (N.C.).

Mims graduated as the valedictorian from Berkeley High School (Moncks Corner, S.C.) in 1978 and is a 1981 Magna Cum Laude graduate of The Baptist College at Charleston (S.C.).

He has spoken and coached at numerous clinics, including the FIBA International Coaching Clinic held in conjunction with the men’s World Championships at Istanbul, Turkey in September 2010. He has been extremely active in the community with his “Read to Succeed” program, both in London and Florida, and his highly popular “Slam Dunk Smoking” program in England, Texas and Florida. Highly sought after as a motivational speaker, Mims has entertained organizations around the world such as Accenture, Investors in People and DynCorp International. He has also been active in his local church, serving as a Lay Eucharistic Minister at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Cocoa Village since 2007.

Mims has served as a studio analyst for the NBA All-Star Game and NBA Finals for over 10 years on European television. He hosted his own radio show, “1 on 1,” on BBC Radio in the U.K. and “The Billy Mims Show” on ESPN Radio on the Space Coast.

Mims and his wife Lynne reside in Viera with their children Courtney, Callie and Josh.

Former Florida Tech standout Ryan Ballard will return to the men’s basketball program as an assistant coach for a second season in 2012-13.

Ballard played in the Panthers’ backcourt for three seasons after transferring from St. Johns River State College. While playing for Mims, he scored 841 points, gathered 202 rebounds, swiped 144 steals and dished out a program-record 415 assists from 2007-09. He still holds the program’s single-season mark for assists, 210, set over the course of the 2007-08 season.

The Eau Gallie High School grad was twice named Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week. As a first-year graduate student in 2009, he was selected All-SSC Honorable Mention.

During the 2007-08 campaign, he helped the program achieve its fifth 20-plus win season. The team ranked as high as No. 11 in the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II Poll thanks to an 11-0 start.

Ballard graduated from Florida Tech with a bachelor’s in business administration in 2008.

Fresh off his final season on the Florida Tech roster, DeMario Robinson joins as an assistant coach on the Panthers’ staff.

Robinson is set to graduate with a bachelor’s in business administration in December 2012 after playing for two years under Head Coach Billy Mims. The Detroit, Mich. native joined the FIT team after two seasons at Henry Ford Community College. While there, he helped his team post a 26-4 overall record and a No. 1 national ranking by averaging 8.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 2.4 steals per game.

During his final season at Florida Tech, Robinson helped take the Panthers to the school’s first-ever outright Sunshine State Conference Regular Season Championship. The squad finished 23-7 overall and 12-4 in the SSC. A win in the first round of the NCAA Tournament over Saint Leo was the second tournament win in school history.

Founded in 1975, the Sunshine State Conference has developed from a basketball organization into the NCAA Division II “Conference of National Champions.” Since its inception, the Conference has grown steadily in sports played, membership, and national prominence. Sunshine State Conference teams have won NCAA Division II national championships in baseball, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, volleyball and men’s and women’s tennis. SSC teams are also nationally recognized in women’s crew.

The SSC sponsors championships in 14 sports for men and women: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, women’s rowing, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball.

Volleyball is just another of the SSC’s national championship caliber sports. (Barry has captured three national titles for the conference in 1995, 2001 and 2004, while Tampa secured the SSC’s fourth in 2006, but the SSC has sent a representative to the Elite 8 in each of the last 13 years.)

Florida Tech joined the SSC in 1981. Other SSC members — all in Florida — are Barry University (Miami Shores), Eckerd College (St. Petersburg), Florida Southern College (Lakeland), Lynn University (Boca Raton), Nova Southeastern University (Fort Lauderdale), Rollins College (Winter Park), Saint Leo University (Saint Leo), and the University of Tampa (Tampa).

SSC member colleges and universities have won 78 national championships in the NCAA. Numerous All-Americans, Academic All-Americans and professional athletes have attended Conference institutions. The SSC is respected for its academic foresight, setting standards which were later adopted by the NCAA.

The Sunshine State Conference is often considered “the conference of champions.” Sunshine State Conference schools have won a total of 78 national championships. Of the current nine members, seven of them have won national championships. These schools include Florida Southern (27), Rollins (14), Tampa (12), Barry (9), Lynn (8), Nova Southeastern (5), and Florida Tech (2). During the 2010-11 seasons, two SSC schools won national championships: Barry in women’s tennis and Nova Southeastern in women’s golf.

Florida Tech is located in Brevard County on the Space Coast. As a Brevard college, you will not be surprised to find out that its first students were engineers who worked at Cape Canaveral, now known as the Kennedy Space Center. Not only is the area home to NASA and many high-tech companies, it just happens to be minutes from beautiful beaches in Central Florida, the world’s leading vacation destination.

Surfing, fishing, diving, swimming, boating, biking, canoeing, hiking, sailing and windsurfing, are just a few of the recreational activities you can enjoy on Florida’s Space Coast.

The Space Coast has a lot more to offer than outdoor activities. The area has a great zoo, museums, lots of movies and great restaurants. You’ll want to visit the downtown area of Melbourne where you can sit and eat at an outside restaurant on balmy evenings, hanging out with your friends.

By choosing a Brevard college like Florida Tech you will wake up each day knowing that you live in a beautiful location near the pristine beaches of the Space Coast, minutes from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center with a vibrant campus life in scenic and sunny Florida.
