This year Book Week is having its 70 th Anniversary and we will be helping to celebrate with a range of exciting activities planned for the week commencing 24 August, and of course we want you to join in the fun. Our celebrations will actually kick off a week earlier with a visit by a highly entertaining Adelaide Author – Mike Dumbleton. Mike will be visiting us on Monday 17 August and will run sessions around his published books and how he gets ideas for his writing. All classes will be reading some of his books before he visits, so remember to ask your child their opinion of his books. Each year, schools and public libraries across Australia spend a week celebrating books and Australian authors and illustrators. This year Book Week is having its 70

th Anniversary and we will be

helping to celebrate with a range of exciting activities planned for the week commencing 24 August, and of course we want you to join in the fun.

Our celebrations will actually kick off a week earlier with a visit by a highly entertaining Adelaide Author – Mike Dumbleton.

Mike will be visiting us on Monday 17 August and will run sessions around his published books and how he gets ideas for his writing. All classes will be reading some of his books before he visits, so remember to ask your child their opinion of his books.

YOUNG READERS

Withering-by-Sea by Judith Rossell

INFORMATION BOOKS (Non- Fiction)

Tea and Sugar Christmas by Jane Jolly

Kathleen lives in the Australian Outback. She waits for the Christmas Tea and Sugar Train. Will she meet Father Christmas, will she receive a Christmas gift from him? A heart warming book that will introduce readers to a slice of the past.

and join in with us throughout the week.

Parent Graffiti board in the Library

Come in and ‘grafitti’ about your favourite childhood book.

The French Connection

Many famous fairytales and fables have French origins. Classes will be involved in reading and discussing these stories and exploring how they are connected to French.

Guess the Adults Favourite Childhood Book

Students are encouraged to enter a competition to match the staff member with their favourite book.

The photos will be displayed in the library soon, and students will have until 8.45am on Thursday 27/8 to enter the competition. There is a $15.00 Scholastic Book Club Voucher for a winner from each of the Units.

Some other fun activities that will take place during the week

Monday 24 August from 2:00pm

Open Classroom Afternoon

Come and visit the classroom, see the Reading Block taking place, see some of the great reading activities that your children take part in everyday at school.

There will also be a QR code trail for you to follow and see links to lots of other exciting literacy happenings. You may see some students talking about favorite authors, a Book Club in action or a class involved in a reading activity. You will also answer some simple questions to go into a draw for a book Gift Voucher.

To join in on this please download a QR code reader on your smart phone or we will have some iPads to borrow. Student tour guides will also be available to help you.

Wednesday 26 August 8.45-9.15am

Castle Unit Classes are inviting ‘special adults’ Grannies, nannas, aunties, uncles, pa’s, opa’s, grandpa’s etc to come in and read to children and then join us for Morning Tea in the Penney Space afterwards.

Thursday 27 August at 10.30–11.00am

Dress up as your Favourite BOOK Character Day.

Students will parade out to the oval with their class and parents are welcome to come and have a ‘Picnic’ Morning Tea on the oval with a favourite book. (please bring your own morning tea). Some delicious ‘French’ inspired snacks will be available from the canteen for students and visitors to purchase.

Winners of the ‘Guess the Adults Favourite Book

Competition’ will be announced.

Reminders will be posted on Facebook pages. We look forward to seeing you here during Book Week activities.

ASSEMBLY FRIDAY 14/8 Parents/Caregivers and family members are invited to attend the school assembly on Friday 14/8 at 9:00am in the Penney Unit. After the assembly you are invited to stay for Morning Tea in the Conference Room. We look forward to seeing you there.

SCHOOL DENTAL SERVICE The School Dental Service is a Child Dental Benefits Schedule provider. All babies, children and young people under 18 years are welcome to attend.

Dental care is FREE for most children. Children who do not qualify for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule can also attend – a small fee will apply for each course of general dental care provided.

All dental care provided is FREE for preschool children.

OSHC will be available on both days. On Friday 11 September OSHC will be having its own Show Day with lots of fun and activities.

NAPLAN RESULTS

The results from the NAPLAN testing will be sent home once we receive them which is expected to be within the next few weeks.

SICK STUDENTS

School is not the place for sick students. Children are sometimes sent to school when they are ill. They need to be home where they can rest and recover from the illness.

School is for learning, not caring for sick students

Children who are sick can infect others

Students who are sent to school ill will be sent home by contacting parents at home or work to collect the student from school.

Please make alternative arrangements for children to be cared for when they are sick.

School photographs will be taken of the children at our school on Friday, 28 August 2015, Term 3,

Week 6.

Photograph information has arrived at our school and been distributed to your child’s class teacher.. Each student has received information and instructions regarding the school photograph process.

The promotion runs until Tuesday 8 September 2015. Remember to collect your sticker(s) when spending $10.00 or more while shopping at Woolworths.

There is a box located in the Library, near the bor-rowing desk where completed sheets can be placed or they can be given to staff in the Library.

Shopping Centre, Edwardstown are looking for kids and teens to read

CANTEEN NEWS

Book Week

To celebrate Book Week on Thursday 27 August the Canteen will have French finger food available for students, parents, caregivers and staff to purchase at recess time.

Food available may include Croissants, Voulevants, French Horns, Eclairs and French Fries.

Prices will range from $0.50 to $2.00 per item.

If you are available to assist with any baking prior to the event (25/8 or 26/8) or assist on the day please see Coralie Goodman. Any assistance in the Canteen is appreciated.
