Eagles Eye Another Playoff Run Excitement is building for the men’s soccer team, which enters the 2015 season with nine returning starters and 22 new faces, after a successful stint a year ago. Seven freshmen starters and a new head coach didn’t faze the program in 2014 as it advanced all thewaytothesemi-finalsoftheAmericanSouthwestConference(ASC)Tournament.Underfirst-yearHeadCoach Matt Torok, the Eagles posted a 5-3-1 record intheASC,goodenoughforathird-placefinish,and a 10-8-2 overall record. It was a banner year for individual honors as well with six players earning All-Conference and three earning Player of the Year awards. Even with the returning experience and talent on the roster, Torok is focusing on the program’s founda-tion. “I expect us to work on the foundation of our pro-gram - effort, unity and discipline,” he said. “That is the basis for what we do. We are trying to do better than we did last year. That is the expectation.” The Eagles’ defense was one of the best in the ASClastseasonrankingthirdinshutouts(7)andfifthin goals against average (1.21). Among the players fueling the defense in 2015 will be senior defender Travis Leach, who was named the Conference De-fensive Player of the Year, sophomore defender Dan-iel Valencia, who was named Conference Freshman Defensive Player of the Year, and senior goalkeeper Austin Benner, who was named All-Conference. “We will lean on Travis and Austin,” said Torok. “They are the foundation of everything that goes on with the team right now. They are the leaders. I told them it is their team. They need to take ownership. Daniel has put in the effort over the summer and looks good at left back. And Tony Ramos will give us outstanding senior leadership. We have four out ofthefiveinthebackreturning,soIexpectustobestrong defensively.” Perhaps the team’s biggest challenge is early development as a unit. “We are a different team than last year,” said To-rok. “It will take some time to gel and develop team chemistry.Itwilltakesometimetofindwhoweareand where guys go.” Similar to last year, a number of new players will play into the mix in 2015. “I think the freshmen class is comparable to last year’s class,” said Torok. “I think there is some real tal-ent. And, we brought in some really good transfers. But we have to get them acclimated to the college game. It is bigger, faster and stronger. Even for some

of the transfers, it will be a different style in this con-ference. I do see a lot of incoming contributions.” And with more talent comes improved competi-tion within the team. “There is more competition this year, the most since I’ve been here,” said Torok. “There are a lot of spots open. A few positions have been locked down, namely Travis and Austin. Everything else is up for competition.” On the attack, the Eagles have junior forward Thomas Mills, who was named First Team All-Confer-encelastseasonafterscoringfivegoalsandtallyingthree assists. Sophomore forward Bryce Young post-edateam-bestsixgoals,andseniormidfielderMattWeaver added four goals a year ago. Sophomores Alex Ross, Rondney Lo, Layne Garcia, Emilio Vega, DanielArendandAustinHedgpethsawsignificantminutes last season. “I look for Thomas to have a big season,” said To-rok.“Ihopewecanfindhimmoreballsthathecanput in the back of the net. With the new players and some of the returners that have improved, I hope to get better on the attack.” There are no guarantees for another playoff ap-pearance for the tradition-rich program, according to Torok.“Wehavetofindourselvesjustlikewehadtolastyear,” said Torok. “We are a totally different team. We have to come together. We have to work hard to be in consideration for the playoffs. It is a different year.”

ATHLETICS

The American Southwest Conference, one of the largest intercollegiate athletic conferences in NCAA Division III, is in its second decade of providing quality athletic experiences for its student-athletes, coaches and administrators. Founded in May 1996 to provide a structure for intercollegiate athletics among member institutions, the American Southwest Conference includes former members of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) and other institutions from outside the Texas borders. From the eight founding institutions to today’s present group of 13 college and universities, the ASC encompasses institutions sharing similar educational and athletic philosophies. The roster of American Southwest Conference members includes Belhaven Univer-sity, Concordia University Texas, East Texas Bap-tist University, Hardin-Simmons University, Howard Payne University, LeTourneau University, Louisi-ana College, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry University, University of the Ozarks, Sul Ross State University, University of Texas at Dallas and University of Texas at Tyler. ASC championships are conducted in 16 sports (8 men, 8 women). Men’s championships are offered in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and track and field. Women’s championships are offered in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field and volleyball. The American Southwest Conference is headquartered in Richardson, Texas.
