ABOUT THIS PUBLICATIONPlease accept this Book as a gift from MPSGA. For the past twelve years this
publication has been distributed to participants at the State Seniors Open Amateur Championship in August and mailed to Members and past Members early in the golf season. We thought, once again for 2015, the Book should be made available to you, our Sponsors but to also allow our members (and past members) to read some interesting information. Nearly all of our scheduled Tournament Courses for 2015, along with past supporters, have participated in bringing this Book to you! We sincerely wish to thank them.
If you would like additional printed information about the State Seniors Open Amateur Championship in August 2015 or any of our other 14 Events, sim-ply go to our Web site at mpsga.org or call 734-207-7888.
All information regarding our entire exciting season can also be found on the Web pages. We hope you will consider joining us at Shanty Creek in August.

MPSGA 2015 State Championship – Course
Lengths/Flight Format
(Player Options)
We continue to receive suggestions from members that our course lengths are either a bit too long or a little too short.
Our single day tournaments are generally set up with four flights played at three course lengths. The players are grouped by handicap index with some players on the flight bubbles bouncing back and forth between flights (& course lengths) from tournament to tournament. This format can also result in a long-hitting 50 year old playing from the front tees and a short hitting 75 year old playing from the back tees—a major concern to some of those so affected.
The USGA, the GAM and other state golf organizations use age-appropriate course lengths in their tournaments. However, setting tees by age alone can also result in higher handicap, younger seniors playing from the back tees where some are just not that comfortable.
In an effort to make our 2015 State Championship enjoyable and yet chal-lenging for all, we want to offer several flight options to give everyone the choice of selecting their own comfort zone in terms of course length and in terms of “gross & net” or “net-only” competition.
These options will be:
1. The MPSGA State Seniors Open-Amateur Championship with a Senior Division (age 50 & up) played at about 6,300 yards, a Super-Senior Divi-sion (age 65 & up) played at about 6,000 yards and a Legend/Grand Mas-ter Division (age 70 & up) played at about 5,700 yards. We will recognize both gross and net performances in each of these age groupings.
Players qualifying for more than one age division may select the division (and course length) where they prefer to compete.
2. A traditional 3-day net-only tournament with contestants playing at 6,000 and 5,700 yards depending on their handicap index.
In summary, our goal is to conduct our major state championship with age appropriate tees for gross competition, while at the same time providing good net competition and comfortable course lengths for everyone.
We hope you can join us at Shanty Creek in August! Please see the website: “mpsga.org” to download the 2015 tournament application. (Or use the smaller version on the next page)

MPSGA announces Player of the Year awards for 2014
The Michigan Publinx Seniors Golf Association recognized their 2014 gross and net player’s of the year at their annual meeting & awards banquet at the Fox Hills/Golden Fox complex in Plymouth.
The 2014 Gross Player of the Year award went to Billy Green, proud owner of “Green-skeeper Golf” - a specialty landscape & artificial putting green installation business here in Michigan. Billy narrowly edged out former major league baseball player, Cincinnati Reds third baseman Mike Grace in both the MPSGA State Tournament at Shanty Creek and in the final Player of the Year standings.
The Super-Senior of the Year award (age 65 & up) went to Dave McTear who wound up just ahead of Mike Phillips. Dave finished third in the Super-Senior division of the 2014 GAM Senior Amateur at Grosse Ile CC and was low gross among the Super-Seniors in 5 of the 13 single-day tournaments. Mike, a former Birmingham CC senior champion also had an outstanding year, winning the Super-Senior division of the 2014 GAM Senior Match-Play tournament at Western GC as well as the MPSGA Super-Senior competition at Shanty Creek.
In the Legend of the Year (age 70 & up) standings, Tom Pilon, a former Evans Schol-ar from Michigan State came out the winner. Tom was low gross among the Legends in 5 of the single-day tournaments and finished third to 1962 Michigan Class A high school & GAM junior champion Dennis Ahern (Chapel Hill, NC) and four-time GAM Senior champion Claud Johnston (Ann Arbor) in the tournament at Shanty Creek. This is Pilon’s second Legend of the Year award. He has also won two Briegel Cup competitions.
The Grand Master of the Year (age 75 & up) award went to Jerry Fenby, an Orchard Lake CC member who beat out Jim Briegel (Ann Arbor/Univ. of Michigan) for season ending honors in the MPSGA’s inaugural Grand Master competition. The 88-year-old Briegel continued to amaze, beating his age by more than 10 shots in several of the tour-naments. The younger 75-year-old Fenby was low gross in 8 of the single day tournaments.
Ray Maidment, a former club champion at Travis Pointe CC and past USGA Se-nior Amateur qualifier won his second Briegel Cup award (low gross relative to age) while shooting his age several times during the season-long competition.
In the net category, John Pratt edged out Everett Winters, Mark Iovan, Harry Hicks, Morris DeFever and the 2014 MPSGA Tournament of Net Champions winner, Dave Baldwin for the 2014 Net Player of the Year award.
A special acknowledgment also to Jim Mlynarczyk who finished as runner-up (in 3 hole playoff) in the 2014 GAM Net Amateur championship at Polo Fields – Washtenaw.

Al Whited — A Reunion of Old Friends
Fifty-five years ago in 1960, Jim Briegel (age 34), Al Whited (age 28) and Tom Ahern (age 19) all reached the semi-finals of the MPGA State Match-Play Cham-pionship at Loch Alpine CC in Ann Arbor.
Throughout the tourna-ment, Jim’s caddy was his 13 year old son, Dutch, who himself played in a number of MPSGA single-day & state tournaments.
Some 30+ years later, when Al was in his 60s, he again reached the semi-finals of this
same Match-Play Tournament, but this time the combined age of the oth-er 3 college age opponents were less than his. Still later in his 70s, he set several Senior Olympics records for golf, which still stand today.
Over the years, Al was a regular in our MPSGA tournaments, and while it is now difficult to play 3 days in a row, he regularly stops by dur-ing the event at Shanty Creek to share stories and banter with friends Jim, Tom, Doug King and many others.

Dave Baldwin Golf Story:I started playing golf in suburban Chi-
cago when I was 7. I was the beneficiary of the good old days when country club memberships were tax deductible busi-ness expenses. My dad played every Satur-day and Sunday so I only got to play when he felt like playing 36. I had a pretty bad temper as a kid with a tendency to throw clubs, which I learned from watching Tommy Bolt during a Western Open and from caddying at another club.
After high school I went to U of M where I ran into SDS, Black Panthers, and Bo Schembechler, not to mention both sides of the Vietnam conflict. It was all very confusing so I found relief on the golf course, which even then was expen-sive and run by people with attitudes.
Upon graduation I got a job in the commercial credit industry in Chicago. One Saturday at a park district course I walked off the course when we reached the 16th tee after 6½ hours. Didn’t play
again for several years. My wife and I returned to Ann Arbor where I joined a 9 hole league at Leslie Park. I still remember the horror of trudging up that monstrous hill to the 14th tee. We subsequently moved to Milwaukee, back to Chicago, Omaha, and then Seattle where we spent 18 wonderful, wet years. We tried to retire to Florida in 2004 but that was the year 4 hurricanes crisscrossed the state so we moved back to Michigan.
I have played golf in 20 states and tend to forget holes and rounds as soon as they are over. But my most memorable round, which I remember quite well, occurred al-most 40 years ago at Pebble Beach. My buddy and I were almost alone on the course on a gorgeous day when we ran into President Gerald Ford and 10 carts of entourage. I had three birdies that day, including 18 (driver, 3-wood, 8 iron, 10' putt) but still could only shoot 92. It cost $50 to play that day.
The West Coast has some beautiful courses but they are expensive and frequently soggy. I try and take every opportunity to tell people how lucky Michiganders are with so many wonderful, affordable courses. I have more courses within 25 miles of my home than there are in western Washington State. Courses like Lyon Oaks, Coyote Preserve, Northville Hills, would be $100–$150 in Washington and even more in California. This is what I think of when I’m shoveling my driveway for the 20th time. Dave Pulliam Joins MPSGA BoardI have been an avid, albeit high-handicap, golfer for the past 25 years or so,
ever since my three sons completed their college work and moved on to productive lives of their own. I am married (44 years) to Kathleen Pulliam and, thanks to our three sons and their lovely wives, we now are enjoying 5 beautiful grandchildren. Our life together has been quite exciting and has included living in four different states, with two extended assignments in Germany. All of this domestic and inter-national family movement has been associated with my career in the Automotive Product Development arena serving Uniroyal, Rockwell International, Ford Motor, and Fisker Automotive.
Highlights of my golfing “career” have included a long-term membership in the Ford Truck Golf League, serving as an officer for 4 years before finally retiring from Ford in 2007. During this time, my partner and I won the League Cham-pionship in 2006, a hard-fought battle right to the end. Thank goodness for my outstanding partner and my high-handicap!
I have participated with the MPSGA for several years now, thoroughly enjoying the organization and friendship offered by this outstanding operation. I am glad to accept a Board position and I look forward to serving for several years to come.
