Lebanon roster features plenty of players brand new to varsity NEW FACES FOR LEBANON BASEBALL

By Israel PotocznyThe Daily [email protected]

After graduating one of its largest senior classes in recent years, it’s going to be a new look this spring for the Lebanon baseball team.

One year after going 14-9 with eight senior starters, including Missouri State freshman pitchers Brad Archer and Austin Knight, the ‘Jackets are looking to a new team to lead the way in 2015.

“Losing a big class like we lost last year, that’s obviously going to have an effect on us,” Lebanon head coach Dustin Young said. “We lose a lot of expe-rience from last year and that is the biggest thing that we are focused on get-ting is the experience.

“I think the kids that are coming in have the talent and the work ethic,

we just have to get them the varsity experience that they need, and once that happens then I think we’ll continue to improve and get stronger as the season goes on.”

Young said the new group coming in has the ability to play all over the diamond defensively, and has worked on giving players plenty of time at different positions during preseason practice.

“We’ve been focused on getting them to multiple positions and getting them as many reps as we can,” Young said. “We’ve had a lot of different faces go to a lot of different places to try to get the most repetitions as we can.”

The ‘Jackets have just two players who saw significant playing time last season, Nick Pearcy and Keaton Warren. Both

players were middle-of-the-order hitters and will counted on for offensive production this season.

Also returning are Bry-an Stewart, Caius Gillen and Steven Bowman, play-ers who got a taste of the varsity last season but will be stepping into bigger roles this year.

Pearcy, who can play first, outfield and pitch, signed to play next season at Southwest Baptist Uni-versity and is coming off a junior season in which he hit .279 with a team-lead-ing three home runs.

“He was in the heart of our order last year and we are going to look to him to be a big bat in the middle of the line-up,” Young said.

Warren was a fi rst-team All-Ozark Conference des-ignated hitter last season and has signed to play

college baseball at Central Methodist University. He hit .353 last season with nine doubles, a home run and 13 RBIs.

“He is a kid that is go-ing to be a big power bat for us with a high average and will get some looks at first base defensively as well,” Young said.

Gillen, a left handed pitcher, was mostly used on the junior varsity last season, throwing one var-sity inning early in the season during the ‘Jackets trip to Orlando, Fla.

“He is going to be a re-ally good arm for us this year,” Young said. “He throws strikes, keeps the ball down in the zone and he is going to be very effec-tive. He has a lot of move-ment on his pitches.”

Also returning are in-fielders Steven Bowman and Bryan Stewart who

saw limited varsity action last year.

“Bowman has had a re-ally good practice time up to this point,” Young said. “Offensively, he looks like his timing is down and he is a guy who could be a table setter, or be a middle-of-the-order guy as well. He can drive in runs as well as get on base a lot. He gives us a lot of options defensively on the infi eld and can also throw for us.

“(Stewart) is in the same boat. Offensively, so far this spring, his timing looks really good. And defensively, he can play anywhere on the infi eld. He has a good arm and he can also play in the out-fi eld as well. He can be a table setter, and can also be a middle-of-the order guy too. He can do multiple things for us as well.”

The Lebanon boys’ golf team opened the season with a win on Monday over Osage and Waynesville on its home course at Great Life Golf & Fit-ness.

The ‘Jackets fin-ished with a team score of 186, led by Hayden Brogdon’s 44. Hunter Allen and Har-rison Carr each shot a 47.

The team features 10 players this year, includ-ing Lawrence Bowlin, Nathan Armstead, Isaac Archer, Kyler Armstrong, Isaiah Penrod and Troy Eidson.

“Our expectations are to learn how to play the game and be confident and competent in the game, be good sports, and we have some play-ers returning that we’re going to be okay,” Sullens said. “We’re a little rusty right now, but every day

at practice, we’re get-ting a little better and better, and our hopes are pretty high this year.”

Lebanon returns two seniors, Hunter Allen and Nathan Condron. Allen was also a member of the varsity basketbal l team during the win-ter and is a four-year letterman for the golf team.

“I think we’re go-ing to do pretty well this year, we’ve just got to go out and play some holes and everyone work together,” Allen said. “I think we’ll end with a good season.”

“He seems to progress and get a little better ev-ery year and we are really anxious for him,” Sullens said.

Condron last played golf as a freshman but is back with the team after two years.

“He swings a nice club, and I am really glad to have him back,” Sullens said. “They (both seniors) are good leaders and good people, and we are glad to have them on the team.”

Lebanon will host the Lebanon Central Bank Tournament on March 30 at Great Life. The tourna-ment will feature 10 teams and will feature a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Sullens said that tournament and the remaining schedule will help prepare the ‘Jackets for the conference and

district tournament.“Those are two tourna-

ments you play for, and right now we prepare for that and hopefully by the time May comes and we go to conference and districts we’ll be at the top of our game and we’ll see how it goes,” Sullens said.

Although the team is losing six seniors from the 2014 season, Condron said the expectations are still high for the ‘Jackets.

“We want to go out and win every match and tournament,” Condron said.

Condron is coming off hip surgery but is cleared to play and said he is feel-ing healthy.

“I had a couple of months of physical ther-apy, but then got back

Lebanon doesn’t have a lot of experience re-turning on the mound as 2014 seniors Archer, K n i g h t , B r a d s h a w, Cornelison and Honey threw all but six innings last year. But Young said as many as 17 pitchers are in the mix in the JV and varsity this spring, and several got an op-portunity to pitch in

Monday’s jamboree.“We have to get them

in (varsity) situations and we hope to get them all at least an inning of varsity experience in the jamboree,” Young said. “The bottom line is they are talented enough to be successful at the varsity level. It is just a matter of getting to see the varsity atmosphere,

seeing the speed, the varsity hitters and going from there.

“All of the pitchers that we have just have to trust their stuff. We have been talking a lot about the mental approach ... and they understand what they have to do, we just have to get their feet wet and it’s going to be an inning at a time.”

Yellowjackets have nearly 100 athletes out for track this seasonBIG NUMBERS OUT FOR LHS TRACK TEAM

The Lebanon boys’ and girls’ track team is gearing up for the start of its season on Tuesday, and more than 100 athletes are currently out for the team, according to head coach Shane Rebmann.

Lebanon will open the season at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at Camdenton High School.

“Our roster had about 120 kids at the start, which is probably about the biggest roster we’ve had,” Rebmann said. “We’ve quite a few of them, and as time goes on we’ll lose a few. The numbers are really good and we’ve got kids out that we haven’t had out before. Football and basketball both did a good job of pushing their kids to go out for track, and that has helped our numbers.”

Among the returning boys this year is senior Brandon Newell, who is a four-year letterman.

“He does a great job running the 200- and 400-yard dash,” Rebmann said.

Also back is senior Cody Cates, who battled through injury last year.

“He was still a huge part of our relay teams and he is back and healthy and looks really good,” Rebmann said.

Senior Ben Wallace is coming off a successful year on the basketball team.

“He looks like dynamite right now and every time we see him run, we’re more and more impressed,” Rebmann said.

Michael Webster has recovered from a foot injury that saw him miss both the

football and basketball seasons, but he is back to full strength this spring.

“He is coming back from injury sus-tained in a car wreck right before foot-ball season, and he has been cleared and is working his way back into things,” Rebmann said. “By the end of the season he is going to be right back where he was last year. We’re excited for him to be back.”

Senior Tony Bennett leads the Leba-non distance runners, and Rebmann said he has set a goal of breaking the school record in the 800.

“He has a good shot to do it,” Reb-mann said.

Leading the girls is sophomore Kelsey Winfrey, who is a returning state qualifier. Rebmann said Winfrey is working on competing in several events this season, many for the first time.

“She can do whatever she wants to do, sets her goals, lets everyone know what she wants to do and goes out and does it — there’s really no stopping her,” Reb-mann said. “She wants to triple jump, run the 400, the 800 and wants to do a little bit of ev-erything.

“ S h e i s a g o o d enough athlete and has proven that in basket-ball and cross country and the sky is the limit for her.”

Zoe Page is the only returning senior var-sity runner. She is a four-year varsity let-ter winner and was a part of a school re-cord 4x100-meter dash team.

“We’re just light on seniors for some rea-son, but we expect big things from (Page) this year,” Rebmann said. “She does a good job as a leader for us.”

Cheyenne Black has been a workout war-rior in the weight room over the past year ac-cording to Rebmann, and could transition from a distance runner to a sprinter.

“She goes to lift-ing competitions with mostly the football guys and she has won every one she has been to,” Rebmann said. “She is running bet-ter than ever and she has dropped down (to sprints). Usually as our kids get older, they run

farther for us, maybe they start in the 100 and they run the 400 as a senior.

“Cheyenne has kind of gone the other way. She started as a dis-tance kid, and now she is really concentrating on the 400 this year. We expect really big things from her as well.”

Shelby Hicks will also compete in the sprints and hurdles and is recovering from shoulder surgery this winter.

“ S h e h a s s o m e wheels, she can really run,” Rebmann said. “It doesn’t seem like a shoulder injury would give you a lot of trou-ble when you run, but it does. She is fi ghting

through that and she is going to be a big part of what we do.”

Also back is Josie Spray who will com-pete in the sprints.

“(Spray) competed on the 4x100-meter relay team that set the school record last year and she is a solid run-ner and a good kid who is always good on the handoffs,” Reb-mann said. “You can always count on her in the relays.”

Kim Suess has been the ‘Jackets top sprint-er the past couple of seasons and will likely compete in the 100- and 200-meter dashes this year.

Yellowjackets lose two key seniors, return core of team that went 7-7 last seasonLHS GEARS UP FOR SEASON

By Israel Potoczny and Alex BoyerThe Daily [email protected]

Coming off a 7-7 season in 2014, the Lebanon boys’ tennis team will be looking to a host of returning play-ers to lead the way.

Lebanon will have to replace seniors Kenyon Clark and Dakota Nichols who teamed to play No. 2 doubles last season. Nich-ols played No. 2 singles, and Clark played No. 3 singles.

“We are going to miss their leadership for sure, but we are hoping to have some guys step up and fi ll those spots,” Lebanon head coach Ron Crowell said.

Leading the way this sea-son are seniors Chad Hower-ton and Bennett Brown, who teamed to play No. 1 doubles last season. Howerton spent his junior season playing at No. 1 singles, while Brown was pencilled in at No. 4 singles.

Also returning are Doug Uder and Dalton Beard.

“We are still trying to put all the pieces together and fi gure out where everyone is going to play,” Crowell said. “We don’t even have a doubles line-up yet and that is something that we are going to be working on this week and next week then matches will be here before you know it.”

The No. 5-6 spots are currently up for grabs, and players such as Ben Easter, Davin Malone and Matt Dickson are all competing.

“(Easter) has had a good preseason and has a chance to grab one of those spots, and Davin Malone has come out of nowhere and has played better than I ex-pected,” Crowell said. “I re-ally see (Dickson) being in our top eight and he really

has a good understanding of how to play,” Crowell said. “His stroke is really good and he has a chance to have a good year and we are excited about what he can do this year.”

Howerton and Brown teamed to go 3-1 last year at the Ozark Conference tour-nament in No. 1 doubles and take home fi fth-place,

Crowell said Howerton’s experience in No. 1 singles last season will prove to be benefi cial this year.

“It is so important, hav-ing a year of playing No. 1 under your belt,” Crowell said. “You have an idea of what to expect. The first year of playing No. 1 can be really, really tough because you’re playing a really good player all the time.

“Chad has a year of it now and we are hoping to

see him progress and con-tinue to get better. It’s nice to have that guy of having played No. 1 and we are excited to see what he can do this year.”

Crowell said Howerton, a three-sport athlete that also played football and basketball, worked on his tennis game in the offsea-son, improving his serve.

Brown mostly played at the No. 4 singles spot last season and could move all the way up to the No. 2 singles spot this season.

“He is going to really strong there,” Crowell said. “Both those guys (Hower-ton and Brown) are good athletes and they get to a lot of balls, have really good court coverage and really play the net well.

“They will bith be strong in not only singles, but

doubles as well.”Senior Dalton Beard,

who often played No. 6 sin-gles last season and teamed with John Rogers in No. 2 doubles, is coming back from an offseason car wreck.“We haven’t really talked about that a lot, but we are glad he is with us and

healthy and I think he is go-ing to make big strides by the end of the season and get back to where he would have been,” Crowell said. “But it might take a little bit longer for him. He didn’t have the summer stuff to work on his game.

“Considering all that, he

is doing really well.”Doug Uder saw some

varsity time last season, and played the No. 5 sin-gles spot in the Lebanon Tournament early in the season. He will likely earn a full-time varsity position this season.

“Doug is ready, I felt like at the end of last year he was ready to take a varsity spot and he was playing really well,” Crowell said. “He is strong and is a great athlete and he is really go-ing to work at it and com-pete and give it everything that he has.”

Crowell said the play of the No. 4-6 spots are cru-cial to having a good sea-son. The girls’ tennis team, which he coaches in the fall, posted a 13-4 recorded aided by several big sea-sons in Nos. 4-6 singles.

“If you look at our girls’ season, Nos. 4-6, we were really strong, we had one girl go undefeated and a couple fi nish with one or two loss-es,” Crowell said. “They all had fantastic records. When you go into a match and feel good about yourself at the Nos. 4-6 spots, that makes a huge difference.

“You can win a lot of matches with good depth.”

STOUTLAND — First-year head coach Clint Horn inherits a young Stoutland baseball team this spring, but already the Tigers are making their mark, open-ing the season 2-1.

The 2015 spring comes after the Tigers were 6-12 in the fall, playing a lot of youngsters.

“I learned a lot from being a fi rst year coach,” Horn said. “Our record doesn’t show what kind of team we are because we lost on three walk-offs this fall, so if we end up win-ning those three games we end up at 9-9 and are able

to get to .500”Horn said one of the

Tigers’ strengths will be on the mound, but are still looking for better execution at the plate.

“I think one of the big-gest strengths we have is our pitching rotation,” he said. “I am confident with whoever I send out there, and we have been really solid on the defensive end of the ball so far this spring.

“We need to cut down on strikeouts and need to put the ball in play and execute with runners in scoring position.”

Leading off for Stoutland is junior catcher left handed hitter Kane Mathews.

“He has done a really

good job being a brick wall behind the plate,” Horn said.

Stoutland will also get a boost from a strong fresh-man class as both Evan Mathews and Jake Pender-grass are penciled into the starting line-up. Mathews will likely start at fi rst after seeing time behind the plate in the fall, while Pen-dergrass is starting in right fi eld.

“(Mathews) is also number four in our pitch-ing rotation so we are expecting some big things out of him this spring,” Horn said. “He has made some really good plays for us over at fi rst.

KEY PLAYERS RETURN FOR LHSBy Israel PotocznyThe Daily [email protected]

LEBANON — Matt Jernigan, who has served as the boys’ head soccer coach at Lebanon for six seasons, helped lead quite a turnaround in his fi rst year coaching girls’ soccer at the school in 2014, as the Yellowjackets followed a 2-18-0 season in 2013 with a 13-11-0 season.

And with the majority of last year’s team returning, it’s a trend he hopes to continue.

“We went from a two-win season to a 13-10 regular season and we’re really excited about last year,” Jerni-gan said. “We think the turnaround was due in part to having good leadership and having one of the best freshmen in the area, that helped us out.

“We are trying to build on that, but we know this year will be a different season.”

Lebanon loses just two seniors from last season — Allie Strickland and Arica O’Quinn — and Jernigan said recently that 30 players are out for the team this year.

Four seniors return this season, including forward Ashton Light, defender Madison Pendergraft, de-fender Riley Johnson and mid fi elder Abbey Johnson.

Also back are several underclass-

men, including Lexi Wapelhorst, who set a new school record for most goals in a game (six) and sea-son (38).

“Everybody in southwest Mis-souri knows about (Wapelhorst) this season and it’s not going to be a sur-prise to anyone when she steps out on the fi eld,” Jernigan said. “We are trying to build a well-rounded team this year and we expect to be a little more balanced with our scoring.

“We want to have some breakout seasons from some of our younger girls who we think can step up.”

Junior forward Becca Tucker, sophomore keeper Chloe Johnson, sophomore forward Shelby Burrow, junior Lily Woolsey and several oth-ers returns, and Jernigan said several newcomers could factor into the mix as well.

The ‘Jackets opened the season by winning the Central Bank Tour-namen, beating Southern Boone in the championship game, 2-1. LHS also posted wins over Mountain View-Liberty (4-0) and Crocker (9-0).

“Our defense was one of our big question marks (coming into the season), and we defi nitely answered that this weekend, only giving up one goal in three games,” Jernigan said.

Lebanon head coach Dustin Young talks with players, from left, Kendrick Tiller, Jordan Bailey, Bryan Stewart, Luke Winfrey, Waylen Lindsey and Nick Pearcy.

As many as 13 juniors could play key varsity roles this seasonA LOOK AT NEW LEBANON PLAYERS By Israel PotocznyThe Daily [email protected]

S e v e r a l L e b a n o n players got their feet wet at the varsity level on Tuesday when the ‘Jackets hosted Willard at Oley Scott Field.

Six juniors — Luke Winfrey, Waylen Lind-sey, Kendrick Tiller, Ke-nyon Breedlove, Lane Groce and Tanner Angst — each made their first varsity start for Leba-non.

Wi n f re y m a d e h i s first start at shortstop and batted leadoff for the ‘Jackets in the sea-son-opener.

“I’m really excited about Winfrey who will be playing a lot of short-stop for us this spring,” Lebanon head coach

Dustin Young said. “He has a really good arm and offensively he is a guy who is going to get on base for us.

“Also Winfrey will see a lot of time on the mound and get some innings under his belt so he is a guy who can pretty much do it all.”

Lindsey batted sec-ond and played second in the opener. Young said Lindsey has a lot of power and great speed.

“He does a great job at second base and can even get behind the plate if need be,” Young said.

A n g s t p l a y e d l e f t field for LHS on open-ing night and batted ninth.

“That’s a position he really isn’t used to,”

Young said. “We are doing that because with what he can give us with his bat. He has one of the best swings on the team, and hits for a high average.”

Til ler got the start behind the plate and has a strong arm and plenty of pop in his bat.

“He does an amazing job behind the plate for us,” Young said. “He has a really sweet swing and has a lot of pop when he bats. He hit over .300 as a sophomore, so when-ever he gets his timing down I expect him to be back at full force.”

Breedlove started in right field and Young said he play all over the place for the ‘Jackets.

“We used him in right field (Tuesday), but he

can give us innings on the mound or even go behind the plate when-ever Kendrick needs a rest,” Young said. “He is more of a closer, for us so that is always nice to have on a team.”

Much like Breedlove, Groce can play any posi-tion in the outfield. He started in center field on Tuesday.

“Hed is more of a leadoff guy for us or a late in the lineup type of guy,” Young said. “He gets on base a lot for us, and is an amazing base runner.”

Also in the mix in the junior class is Trace Winfrey, Connor Hicks, Jordan Bailey and Cory Dudley.

“Winfrey is a guy who will come off the bench

for us and give us some power if we need it,” Young said. “He has a nice swing and has good opposite field power.”

After starring on the football field and basket-ball court, Hicks bring speed and versatility to the LHS lineup.

“He is a little banged up right now, but he is one of our best defen-sive players,” Young said. “He will be our main courtesy runner and is definitely a guy who is smart on the base path.”

Bailey made his first varsity appearance on the mound on Tuesday and will be one of the “Jackets main starters on the mound.

“He will be a guy who can play pretty much

anywhere we need him to,” Young said. “He also does a great job of getting on base for us and is another guy who has a high average.”

Dudley also made his first varsity appearance on the mound on Tues-day and is another ver-satile player for LHS.

“He is someone who is going to play a lot of third base and even get quite a few innings on the mound for us this spring. He is a guy who can hit really good op-posite field and has a nice bat.”

Other juniors in the mix this season are out-fielder Dalton Vyrostek, infielder Cody Lund-gren and outfielder Rob-ert Walker.

“Pendergrass has a lot of pop to his swing, and has already hit a couple out during practice so far. I like what I see in this kid, and he has real potential of being a solid ball player.”

Junior Jessie Hubbs returns for the Tigers in center fi eld and has hit second in the line-up and is the No. 3 pitcher in the Stoutland rotation.

“Junior Jessie Hubbs plays center fi eld for us. He has been hitting second for us, and been our number three guy on the mound this spring. He is pretty much the team leader of this squad and everyone always looks up to him and what he has to say.”

Senior Layne Wood hits sixth and starts in left.

“He hits sixth for us, draws a lot of walks for us, and fi elds the ball well,” Horn said. “He is overcoming a back injury, but when he is 100% he’ll get better at the plate for us.”

At third base is sophomore Colton Shepherd, who also hits third in the

lineup. “We needed him to step up with what

we lost last year, and what we have com-ing up in the future,” Horn said. “For him to make this adjustment as fast as he has I am very impressed.”

At second base is sophomore Brian Starner.

“He started for us this fall and has a really nice glove, and is one of our best fielders,” Horn said. “We’re excited about him.”

Junior Michael Grey is the Tigers’ No. 1 on the mound and is already on the mound. Sophomore Dylan Frye is the Tigers No. 2 on the mound and splits time at shortstop with Gray.

Grey has done a great job at the plate, leading the team in RBIs,” Horn said. “Frye is 0-1 this spring, but does an excellent job seeing the ball when he is batting. He hit a home run his first at bat of the year this spring.”

“Suess is running really well right now,” Rebmann said. “We expect big things from her this year. She was also a part of that 4x100-meter relay team and they are all back and they should be pretty good again this year.”

Also back is Maggie Plake who competed on the 200- and 400-me-ter relay teams last year.

Also back is Wynter Nekola who is competing in the 400 and 800

and is battling back from injury.“She is very talented but is bat-

tling back from a broken foot,” Rebmann said. “She is another one that is working her way back in and trying to get healthy. She has spent a lot of time on the bike and hasn’t ran a whole lot yet.

“Hopefully, by the time that things get really important we’ve got her back because she is pretty solid.”

Mother Nature wins Lebanon’s baseball season opener

Game stopped in bottom of third inning due to inclement weatherBy Israel PotocznyThe Daily [email protected]

LEBANON — Mother Nature and the Willard Tigers teamed up to win the home opener for the Lebanon Yellowjackets on Tuesday at Oley Scott Field.

Leading 1-0 through the fi rst two innings, Willard sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of the third, and the fi rst eight reached safely before leadoff batter Patrick Latham socked a line drive down the right fi eld line. The ball was speared by Lebanon third baseman Bryan Stewart and turned into a double play with the sacks jammed and no outs.

Jordan Stevens followed with a two-run triple and the damage was done for Willard as the Tigers took an 8-0 lead.

While the Tigers sent 21 batters to the plate, Lebanon had yet to make it through the lineup once when the game was stopped in the bottom of the third.

After the fi rst batter struck out to open the

frame, the game was halted with one out and a 1-1 count on No. 8 batter Lane Groce.

Lebanon had just one baserunner as Ke-aton Warren reached on a single with two outs in the fi rst, but Warren was immediately lost on the bases when he strayed too far off fi rst and the Tigers’ outfi eld threw behind him for the third out.

Lebanon went in order in the second.According to Lebanon head coach Dustin

Young, the game will be continued from where it left off at some point in the future.

“Overall, we saw some positives and saw some negatives,” Young said. “We have a lot of guys this year that are new to the varsity level and are playing different positions that they haven’t played before. We are trying to get our feet wet, and we are trying to have a bunch of different guys go in a bunch of different places and trying to be successful all at the same time.”

CONWAY — One year after going 21-5, the Con-way baseball team opens the 2015 season with high expectations and a pre-season state ranking.

Led by Missouri State commit Hunter Dame, the Bears open the season ranked No. 8 in Class 3 in the preseason Mis-souri High School Base-ball Coaches Association poll. After going 14-4 in the fall, the Bears fi gure to be solid on the mound and in the fi eld as seven starters return.

“We bring back a lot I think,” Conway head coach Clay Bilyeu said. “I really think these next two years are our two years to have success even beyond just having a good season.

“In my opinion, we should be playing for a district championship, or more.”

Conway loses three key starters in all-state outfielder Baylie Jones, shortstop Ron Wellman and catcher Jacob Caudle. But the Bears otherwise return a core group of young players.

“Even though we lose

three All-Summit Con-ference guys, I feel like we have some guys who are ready to step up and fi ll those shoes,” Bilyeu said.

Returning on the in-fi eld is senior Tyler Simp-son who will start at fi rst base. He led the team in hitting last season with a .408 batting average. Simpson could be the team’s only senior starter and will also see time on the mound.

Sophomore Tayler Simpson and junior Chris Terry will both see time at shortstop and second base. Simpson mostly played for the junior var-sity last season, while Terry is able to play all over the diamond. He played in 25 games last season and hit .354 and led the squad with 36 runs scored.

“Terry is that guy who can play in the outfi eld, the infi eld and can move around to give somebody a game at DH,” Bilyeu said.

Dame will see time at both shortstop and third base when he’s not pitch-ing. Dame hit .385 last season and led the team with 10 doubles.

Junior Charlie Perry-man, who played in 23 games last season, will see time at third base as well.

In the outfi eld, juniors RC Shockley, Andrew Huckaby and Jared Smith will play, from left to right.

“We’ll start 10 pretty much every day with a DH with a senior, a sophomore and the rest are juniors,” Bilyeu said.

Behind the plate is junior Randall Rosen-thal, who is the younger brother of a former Con-way catcher under Bilyeu, Ryan Rosenthal.

“He’s good,” Bilyeu said. “This will be his fi rst year catching full time and he really just started catching last year. He’s quick, has a cannon and is a hard worker. He’s kind of like his brother person-ality-wise and work ethic wise.”

And in Dame and ju-nior Ethan Medlock, the Bears have a 1-2 punch on the mound that is capable of carrying the team.

Dame was 8-0 with a 0.97 ERA as a sopho-more.

Conway senior Tyler Simpson is one of several starters re-turning this season for the Conway baseball team. Simpson will be counted on to play first base and pitch.

CONWAY BASEBALL from page 14

He made 10 appear-ances on the mound, including eight starts, and threw 58 innings. He allowed 30 hits, walked 13 and struck out 72.

Bilyeu said Dame had a terrifi c offsea-son and has increased his strength and ve-locity.

“He’s been lifting and has bulked up,” Bilyeu said “He’s con-sistently throwing in the mid-80s and at a couple of showcases this winter he was clocked at 90-91 a couple of times.

“He has been our No. 1 since his fresh-man year, but he has continued to get bet-ter and to add veloc-ity. I think he is going

to be one of the better pitchers in the area in all classes.”

Bilyeu said Med-lock is the opposite of Dame, relying on his offspeed pitches and ability to keep hitter off-balance. He was 5-2 with a 1.11 ERA last season. Medlock made 10 appearances on the mound, including sev-en starts, and threw 44 innings. He allowed 38 hits, walked 10 and struck out 42.

“He has thrown a lot of innings for us and he is starting to get a fastball,” Bilyeu said. “He has always had a lot of move-ment with his fastball and throws a natural sinker. But he is start-ing to throw in the

upper 70s now.“He is going to

pitch to contact and use his defense, but be very effective too.”

Also in the mix on the mound will be Huckaby, who threw a lot for the Bears over the summer and fall.

“He does a really good job and throws a lot of strikes,” Bilyeu said. “He has a really good curveball and a good change-up, and against any third team of the week he is going to be the best kid on the mound.

“Him coming off basketball, he might not be ready to throw a lo t ear ly and i t might take h im a couple of weeks.”
