With the completion of this certificate you will have a better understanding of Universal Design and disability. You will be able to make your content universally designed, so that it is more accessible, more readable, and more usable for the widest number of individuals. Solving the Puzzle of Endowments
When it comes to managing departmental funds, the ones that seem to generate the most confusion are endowments. Endowments themselves have three parts, and each part has its own fund number. Add to that the related spending funds in the University, Foundation, or both, and it is easy to see how confusing these funds may be. To manage endowments it is important to understand concepts such as spending policy calculations, underwater endowments, fair market value, investment earnings, etc. This seminar will explain these concepts and provide guidance on managing endowments in Banner. A brief introduction to topics related to investment policy and the regulatory environment of endowments will be provided. Course Objectives:
Define an endowment fund and distinguish between true, term, and quasi
Understand how endowments are recorded in Banner
Understand what the current endowment spending policy is, and what is meant by “underwater endowment”
Have a cursory understanding of the regulatory environment and reporting standards for endowments
Have an introductory understanding of the investment side of endowments, such as asset allocation, investment managers, and UNCCIF
Understand the importance of pledges and endowments in general to universities

Why Diversity Matters
Imagine, for a minute, a workplace where everyone is the same. All of the workers are of the same ethnicity, gender, educational background, and socioeconomic standing. With a team full of people essentially cut from the same cloth, where do the new ideas come from? How will the company ever be able to see things from a different point of view? Without diversity in the workplace, companies run the risk of becoming mono-cultural organizations that see things from a very limited perspective. The effects of this are far-reaching, right down to the company's bottom line. Establishing diversity in the workplace is not limited to laws that pertain to the hiring of women and minorities. Nor is it limited to managing or even honoring differences between people, but rather, it is about taking those differences and putting them to work in the best possible way for both the good of the company and for the good of the worker. This course will take a closer look at diversity initiatives in the workplace and what makes them matter.

Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)
If you are responsible for managing other employees on campus, you need to understand the specific issues facing educational institutions related to compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Overtime exemption decisions that classify a position as "FLSA Subject" or "FLSA Exempt" are much more complex than most people realize. Whether or not an employee is required to fill out a time sheet is only the critical, visible tip of much larger iceberg. Determining the exempt status of higher education positions is very complex and technical. Colleges and Universities have been particularly vulnerable to overtime exemption challenges, and as a manager you need to understand how the Fair Labor Standards Act impacts you.

Handling a Difficult Discussion
Nobody likes having difficult, even uncomfortable conversations with employees. The easy way out for many people is to simply avoid the conversation in hopes that the problem – whether it involves performance, behavior/attitude issues, personal hygiene, or something else – will just go away. The result: problems magnify and the supervisor’s credibility suffers. If you’re a supervisor or manager you must be prepared to have difficult, even uncomfortable conversations with employees. This workshop provides you with a systematic approach for handling conversations and issues that people frequently avoid or execute with disappointing results. The workshop focuses on managing difficult conversations and increasing the likelihood of a productive outcome. Tools, techniques, and conversational processes will be illustrated to increase your effectiveness when faced with a difficult conversation.

Taking Charge of Change
Change is constant – whether in our personal lives or within our work environment. As supervisors, it is your role to help your team adjust to change while at the same time managing your own personal transition. It is easy to see change as something you need to “sell” to your employees to help them adjust. This interactive course proposes another strategy for managing change – instead of “selling” the change, why not acknowledge it? Taking Charge of Change will help you:
- Recognize the three stages of change - Learn strategies for acknowledging the impact of change on your team - Identify the support and information that people need during each of the three stages
