JIM HERLIHY

Director of Athletics First Year

Plymouth State University, 1988 A leader with more than 25 years of experience in athletic administration, including nearly 12 years working at the NCAA Division II level, Jim Herlihy was been named the new Director of Athletics at Auburn University at Montgomery in September of 2015. Herlihy spent the past 16 months as the Director of Athletics at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H., a NCAA Division II member which competes in both the Northeast-10 Conference and Eastern College Athletic Conference. During his tenure with the Hawks, Herlihy oversaw 20 sports, nine facilities, 68 employees and more than 450 student-athletes. He managed the financial aspects of a $7 million operating

budget and Annual Fund, while cultivating gifts in athletic initiatives during the leadership phase of the first-ever Capital Campaign conducted in the 125-year history of Saint Anselm. Herlihy also served on the President’s Cabinet, where he was the liaison for numerous campus committees. Under his leadership, five teams qualified for national tournaments and more than 55 percent of student-athletes were named to the Dean’s List. Additionally, the department of athletics boasted a 92 percent graduation rate and student-athletes participated in more than 4,000 hours of community service. Prior to his arrival on the Hilltop, Herlihy served as the Director of Athletics at the University of Montevallo for seven years. While at Montevallo, Herlihy guided the Falcons through a transition from the Gulf South Conference to their current home, the Peach Belt Conference, while also overseeing the 15 athletic programs, 42 employees, more than 300 student-athletes and seven facilities. He spearheaded the fund raising and construction of three new facilities on campus and improved the Annual Fund by more than 200 percent. Herlihy was also responsible for the addition of five varsity sports at Montevallo. Competitively, the Falcons captured six conference championships and finished as conference runners-up eight times. The school qualified for the NCAA Tournament 15 times under his leadership. Montevallo posted its best finishes in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings under his guidance. Six student-athletes earned All-American status, while three were named Academic All-Americans. Montevallo also produced its first-ever conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Herlihy was an instrumental leader in a period of substantial growth at Montevallo. Under his direction, the Falcons increased their student-athlete population by more than 100 percent, while maintaining a strong tradition on the fields of competition and in the classroom. More than 60 percent of all student-athletes maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or better, while athletics recorded a graduation rate more than 20 percent higher than the general student body. The department of athletics was a national finalist for the 2014 NCAA DII Award of Excellence and was recognized by the Peach Belt Conference for community engagement initiatives three times. Herlihy has served on the NCAA DII Management Council, as well as been a member of the NCAA DII Finance & Planning Committee and DII Identity & Branding Committee. Herlihy earned his bachelor’s degree from Plymouth State University, before completing his master’s degree in sports management at the University of Alabama. He also completed the Sports Management Institute’s executive education program, sponsored by the University of Notre Dame and University of Georgia, in 2011. The SSAC and NAIA

Founded in 1949, what is known today as the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) has prospered and excelled both athletically as well as academically in the Southeast region of the United States. The SSAC is currently made up of 14 institutions from Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana and Mississippi. The conference was originally established as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GIAC) with six charter members, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the league was renamed the Georgia Athletic Conference (GAC) and remained so until 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the official name was again changed to the Southern States Athletic Conference. In November of 2012, the league announced that it planned to expanded to 16 teams for the 2013-14 season with the inclusion of Blue Mountain College, Martin Methodist College and Bethel (Tenn.) University from the TranSouth Conference. At the conclusion of the 2013-14 year, the league saw the departure of Southern Wesleyan University, Spring Hill College and Emmanuel College, which all transitioned to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II, in addition to Southern Polytechnic State University, which was consolidated with Kennesaw State University. Those vacancies allowed for the admission of Dalton State College and Middle Georgia State College. Both institutions will compete within the SSAC during the 2014-15 season, giving the conference 14 total members. The SSAC hosts 14 conference championships including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf, and men’s and women’s track and field. Since its inception and affiliation with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the conference has developed a reputation as being one of the premier conferences in the country in several sports. The SSAC boasts 32 teams and 11 individual national titles, while 30 more teams have finished as national runners-up. With its office based in historic Montgomery, Ala., the conference staff features Commissioner Mike Hall, Assistant Commissioner Sam Knehans, Treasurer Sally Shoppe and an Eligibility Chair, Dr. Ron Melton. The 2015-16 academic year marks the 16th year for Auburn Montgomery athletics competing as a member of the SSAC. Since joining the league in 2000, the university has collected 74 total conference regular season and tournament championships.

The NAIA, headquartered in Kansas City, Kan., is a national organization with nearly 300 institutional members and more than 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. Since its introduction of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. The NAIA has continuously affirmed its commitment to equality by becoming the first national organization to offer institutional postseason opportunities to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow institutional membership to historically black institutions in 1953, and on Aug. 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athletics programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by supporting academic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and activity as an opportunity to intentionally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefit of each individual. In addition, the Champions of Character program monitors each NAIA institution’s commitment to the initiative with its Scorecard, which is divided into character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion.

2015 Outlook

4 NAIA Finals Appearances

The Auburn Montgomery men’s soccer team is poised for a fourth consecutive NAIA Tournament appearance in 2015, as it returns 15 letterwinners from last year’s 13-6-1 squad. “I think our program is right where we need to be,” ninth-year head coach Wulf Koch said. “Last year ended in disappointing fashion, but overall I thought it was another solid season for the program. I think the natural thought process was to think we would make it back to the national championship game and win it, but at times we forgot about the process of getting there. I think this year we understand that process and are willing to put in the work to get back to that top level.” Headlining the returners is senior forward Yannic Fallack, who earned Second-Team All-American honors from both the NAIA and the NSCAA last season. The 2014 Southern States Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year, Fallack scored a team-high 14 goals and added six assists. Also back are senior midfielders Sebastian Wladyko and Niklas Hunold. Wladyko notched four goals and assisted on 12 others, while Hunold will begin his third season as a captain with the team. Junior Alan Harwell, a two-time all-conference performer, returns after scoring seven times and tallying five assists. Seniors Daniel Grobelny and Mathis Kroeger will provide stability along the defensive line, while senior midfielder Krishnan Patel will look to up his production from his first season with the Warhawks. Senior Alexander Neubarth, who has started the last three seasons as a defender, will transition to the front line for AUM. Sophomores Dominik Budic, Franco Varga, Michael Hettler and

Christian Young will also play key roles for the team. “This year will really come down to how bad our seniors want to succeed,” Koch said. “We return a strong group and an extremely large senior class, so the returning players will set the tone for the season. From the first moment they return to campus, I would like to see them work and buy into our system. We have a ton of experience and they have played in the national tournament the past three seasons. I certainly feel like we can compete as a top-tier NAIA team.” The Warhawks also welcome seven newcomers to the program, all of which will compete for playing time. Joining the program for the 2015 season will be goalkeepers Filip Ahlstrom and Hunter Allen, defenders Alex Costa and Kyle Hogg, midfielder William York and forwards Cedarian Brunelle and Nick Davis. “We are excited about the players we added for the upcoming season,” Koch said of the newcomers. “They each bring a strong skill set, but like all first-year players, the key will be how quickly they adjust to the college game and to AUM.”

Goalkeepers Entering preseason camp, the goalkeeper position is arguably the biggest question mark for the Warhawks. Following a strong junior campaign in which he won 12 matches and made 67 stops in net, Phillip Hitpass elected not to return to the program, leaving AUM with three relatively new options in goal. Junior Stephen Ingram is the lone returner, but has appeared in just four matches during his career and played only 120:32 between the pipes. “Stephen is back for his third season with the program, so I think he understands what we expect from our goalkeepers,” Koch said of Ingram. “I thought he did a fabulous job last year when he filled in for Phillip, but we need him to continue to show improvement.” A pair of freshmen, Ahlstrom from Sweden and Allen from nearby Millbrook, will also compete for the starting spot, which according to Koch is wide open. “Filip is probably our most talented option in goal,” said Koch. “The big question will be how quickly he responds to being in a new environment and how quickly he adjusts to being a college student-athlete. Hunter played club soccer here in the area, but he will need to quickly adjust to the college game to contribute this season.”

Defenders The defensive unit also provides a question mark for the Warhawks, but also has the opportunity to be one of the most stable units on the team. Grobelny and Kroeger each return for their fourth season with the program, but have each battled injuries during their tenure at AUM. However, Koch feels confident in the ability of the duo. “Daniel is a very good soccer player, but will have to battle for minutes,” Koch said. “He has a good understanding of what we want to do, but will be pushed by some of our newcomers. Mathis has worked extremely hard for this year and is graduating in December. This will be his last hurrah.” Both Costa and Hogg as expected secure starting spots along the defensive line. Costa joins the program from St. Peters College in Johannesburg, South Africa and played two seasons for the South African U-17 team. Hogg attended Leith Academy in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he helped the team to the Scotland Schools championship as a senior. “I see Alex and Kyle as major contributors this year,” said Koch. “Alex is a center back with a high pedigree. I think he brings a warrior spirit to our defense and will solidify . Kyle is a very pacey player and will likely be a starter for our team. He is in incredible shape and fits our style of play.” The Warhawks also have options along the back line, as Hunold, Budic and Varga all started games a defender last year.

Midfielders The midfield will provide stability for the Warhawks, while also welcoming a new face to the rotation. The senior trio of Hunold, Patel and Wladyko will anchor the position, while Budic will also see significant minutes after transitioning from his defensive role as a freshman to his more natural role in the midfield. Hunold, a three-year starter and two-year team captain, will maintain one of the starting spots after scoring once and assisting on two goals last season, despite playing mainly along the defensive line. “Niklas is just a great player, leader and person,” Koch said. “He is as close to a guaranteed starter as we have on our team. His leadership will be key to our team.” Wladyko, who led the team with 12 assists and ranked fourth in points, will also enter the season as a starter. After earning First-Team All-SSAC and First-Team NSCAA All-South Region honors last season, Wladyko begins his final season with the Warhawks with 16 career goals and 22 assists. “Sebastian is probably our key player,” said Koch. “We have to do a better job of getting him involved. He is a special player who has the potential to play professionally. If he plays well, we will be successful.” Following a freshman campaign in which he started 19 games along the defensive line, Budic will look to impact the 2015 squad from the midfield position. Budic enjoyed a highly-decorated first season with the Warhawks, earning all-conference, all-freshman and all-region honors. “Dominik is going to play a huge role for us this year,” said Koch. “He has a tremendous work ethic and an impressive soccer IQ. I really expect for him

to build on a very successful freshman season.” Patel and Varga will each contribute in a larger role in 2015, after the duo combined for 37 appearances last season. For his contributions, Varga was named to the SSAC All-Freshman team. “Krishnan is a guy who can help us, but needs to have a good start to the preseason,” Koch said. “He is a very vocal player on the pitch, but at times, needs to be a bit more coachable. I would also like to see him become a little more consistent. Franco is a very versatile player who will help us both in the midfield and in the back. He will play a key role for our team in one of those areas.” York will also seek minutes at the position following a strong prep career at Montgomery Academy. York earned all-metro honors his final two seasons and was selected the Montgomery Advertiser Metro Player of the Year as a junior. “William is very passionate about the game and wants to succeed,” Koch said of York. “His role with our team will depend on how he adjusts to the physicality and speed of the college game. He is certainly a guy who has the skill set to help us, potentially this year.”

Forwards The forward position will likely be the strongest on the pitch for the Warhawks, returning the Second-Team NAIA All-American Fallack and two-time all-conference selection Harwell. In addition, Neubarth will transition from a defensive role the past three seasons and look to provide a third scoring option up top. Dukes, Hettler and Young, as well as newcomers Davis and Brunelle will also compete for minutes. Fallack enjoyed a break-out season for AUM in 2014, when he led the team with 14 goals and 34 points. He added six assists, a mark which ranked tied for second on the squad. In addition to “Yannic is a clever player,” Koch said of Fallack. “He takes advantage of his opportunities and has set the expectations very high for the upcoming season after a strong junior campaign.” Harwell, who earned Second-Team All-SSAC selection last year, finished with seven goals and five assists in 20 games. “Alan may be our most athletic kid we have on our team,” Koch said. “He is so strong and so fast, and really poses problems for our opponents. We are lucky to have a player of his caliber in our program.” Neubarth is a wild card for the Warhawks, as he adjusts to the new position. In 44 career games, the senior has tallied just four goals and an assists. “Alex has had a very solid career for us,” Koch said. “He has provided stability to our defense and

will continue to contribute to our team. We are exploring the option of utilizing his strength and physical style of play as a scorer. He has a strong soccer background, so he will find a way to be on the field.” The trio of Dukes, Hettler and Young will provide valuable minutes, adding to the overall depth of the team. “Grant was having a really nice Spring, but was shut down after an injury,” said Koch. “His progress will really be a nice addition to our team. His role will certainly be increased. Michael had an injury this summer, so we will not have him for the preseason and the first part of the regular season. His role will obviously depend on how his recovery goes. We will rely heavily on Christian during Michael’s absence. He showed a lot of promise as a freshman, so we are looking forward to seeing what he can do.” Davis and Brunelle each enjoyed stellar prep careers in Norwich, England and Anchorage, Alaska, respectively. Davis helped Dereham Sixth Form to the Old Catton Junior championship during the 2012 and 2013 seasons, while was a member of the Club State Championship team from 2012-14. “Cedarian and Nick have the skills to be very good players for us,” Koch said. “They have tremendous speed and are both very strong. I think they will both be solid contributors to us as freshman.”

Ninth Season as Men’s Coach / 12th Overall at AUM

The face of the AUM men’s soccer program since 2007, Wulf-Dieter Koch enters his ninth season at the helm of the men’s soccer program and 12th overall at AUM. During his tenure with the Warhawks, Koch has posted a 107-45-14 overall mark with the men’s program, after compiling a 48-19-3 record in three seasons coaching the women’s team. During his collegiate career, Koch has posted a record of 218-148-25 as a men’s coach, while adding 71 wins as a women’s coach. He sports a career win percentage of .590 and has led nine teams to the NAIA National Tournament. Under Koch’s leadership, AUM has finished the season ranked in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches’ Poll seven times,

including the past three seasons. He led AUM to the NAIA National Tournament for three straight seasons, including in 2013 when the Warhawks finished as the NAIA National Tournament runner-up. In 2012, AUM won the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament Quarterfinals. He also led AUM to the 2007 NAIA Region XIII tournament championship and to the NAIA National Tournament Final Four in his first season. Last season, Koch guided the Warhawks to a 13-6-1 overall record, including a 5-2-1 in the highly-competitive SSAC. AUM made its third consecutive postseason appearance and finished the year ranked 24th in the NAIA Coaches’ Poll. In addition to their on-field success, the Warhawks also received the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the fifth consecutive season. Several individuals earned recognition following the year, as junior Yannic Fallack was selected a NAIA Second-Team All-American and Fallack, junior Sebastian Wladyko and freshman Dominik Budic earned First-Team All-South Region honors from the NSCAA. Koch also collected his 100th victory as AUM’s men’s coach with a win at Millsaps. He became just the third coach in the program’s history to reach the milestone. In 2013, Koch helped AUM to a 15-7-2 record, despite starting the season 2-4. The Warhawks rallied and went 10-1 during a rigorous SSAC schedule, earning an automatic berth into the NAIA Tournament as the league’s regular-season champion. Entering the national tournament as the No. 11 seed, AUM defeated the second, third and sixth-seeded teams en route to the championship match, with all five of its matches being decided in overtime periods or in a shootout. The Warhawks had a nation-high four NAIA All-Americans, while also having four named to the NSCAA All-American squad. Senior defender Taian Souza was selected the NSCAA’s NAIA Player of the Year and Koch took home NAIA Coach of the Year accolades from the organization. Four student-athletes, Souza, Cesar Kestring, Christian Holthaus and Elvar Sigurdsson, were named NAIA Scholar-Athletes. Souza was also voted the SSAC Defensive Player of the Year, while Alan Harwell was chosen the league’s Newcomer of the Year. Koch also enjoyed a coaching milestone during the 2013 season, when he earned his 200th men’s coaching victory with a 2-1 result over rival Mobile. He was also selected the SSAC Coach of the Year. In 2012, Koch guided the Warhawks to an 18-4-2 record, with their four losses coming to the four national tournament semifinalists. Three AUM players earned NAIA All-American honors, including goalkeeper Vignir Johannesson, who was named a first-team selection. Additionally, five student-athletes earned all-conference honors, four were named to the SSAC All-Freshman team and six were selected to the league’s All-Academic Team. The Warhawks faced 11 teams ranked or among the others receiving votes in 2012 and responded with a 6-4-1 record. The 18 victories by the team, 11 of which were shutouts, were the most by a team since the 2005 squad went 23-2 and reached the Final Four. In the classroom, the men’s soccer program was equally successful. The Warhawks posted a team grade point average of 3.11, including a 3.26 in the 2013 Spring semester. Three student-athletes were named NAIA Scholar Athletes, while Holthaus earned AUM’s nomination for the SSAC Honor Student-Athlete award. During the 2011 season, Koch led the Warhawks to a 12-5-4 record. AUM reached the finals of the SSAC tournament, and was only a penalty shootout away from winning the conference and returning to the NAIA tournament. Five players earned spots on SSAC all-conference teams, including two first-team selections. Men’s soccer also continued to have success academically, with 10 players making the SSAC All-Academic team. At AUM, the team received the Team GPA award, given to the program which has the highest average overall for the year. With a 3.19 team GPA, it was the second straight year they had earned the top spot. In 2010, the Warhawks struggled with injuries, inexperience and a difficult schedule, posting the first losing season in Koch’s time as head coach at AUM. The Warhawks posted a 7-9-2 record on the season, after facing six teams that finished the season ranked in the NAIA Top 25 Poll, four others among the others receiving votes and seven teams that qualified for the NAIA National Tournament. Despite the on-field results, the Warhawks were recognized for their sportsmanship on the pitch, in the classroom and in the community with the 2010 Buffalo Funds Five Star Champions of Character Team Award, one of 23 given out by the NAIA for each of its 23 championship sports. The team was also presented the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s Team Academic Award, after posting a team grade point average of 3.27 during the previous academic year. In his previous three seasons, Koch helped the Warhawks to a 42-14-3 record, the NAIA National Tournament in 2007, a No. 1 ranking in the NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 Poll the week of Sept. 16, 2008, and eight weeks ranked within the top 10. Koch, who now has 18 years of experience coaching on the men’s side and 24 years at the college level, began his coaching career at his alma mater, the University of Maine-Fort Kent in 1991 and 1992. He then moved on to the University of Maine-Machias, where he led the men’s program for four seasons. He spent four seasons in South Dakota at National American University where he led the Mavericks to four consecutive NAIA post-season appearances, reaching the NAIA Region III semifinals all four seasons, and advancing on to the NAIA National Tournament once. While at NAU, Koch was selected to the 1998 NAIA and National Soccer Coaches Association of America Regional Coach of the Year and was the 2000 NAIA Region III Sectional Coach of the Year. Koch moved south following the 2001 season, taking over the men’s and women’s head coaching position at Spring Hill College, where he spent two seasons before coming to AUM. Koch was hired as the AUM women’s head

Second Season

Chris Blight is in his second season as a graduate assistant coach with the AUM men’s soccer team. Blight joined the staff after spending one season as the head girl’s soccer coach at Auburn High School. During his lone season, he helped the Tigers to a 22-4-1 record and the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Class 6A Area 5 championship. AHS advanced to the third

round of the AHSAA State Tournament, where it fell to eventual state champions, Oak Mountain High School. The Lady Tigers outscored their opponents 51-1 in area play and 144-25 on the year. Originally from Guildford, England, Blight moved to the United States in 2009, where he attended Huntingdon College and played for the men’s soccer team. During his four years, he was a two-time team captain, a member of the Great South Athletic Conference All-Academic team and helped the Hawks to the GSAC Tournament championship match in 2011. In 34 career games, Blight scored five goals and assisted on four others. He graduated from Huntingdon with a degree in physical education. Blight has also been active in coaching club soccer, where he has coached teams with Blast Soccer Club, FC Torjager and the Capital City Streaks. He was the Assistant Director of Soccer and won several state championships while with the Streaks. He also holds a USSF D License and an NSCAA National Diploma. Earlier this year, Blight married the former Katie Grizzard. The couple lives in Montgomery.

Spencer Jacoby is in his second season with the AUM men’s soccer coaching staff in 2014, as he will serve as one of the program’s graduate assistants. A native of Johannesburg, South Africa, Jacoby spent the previous two years working in the marketing department of the O’Rourke Sales Company in Davenport, Iowa. He also played for the Quad City Eagles of

the National Premier Soccer League, where he helped the team win the Central Division of the Midwest Conference for the first time in club history in 2013. He also coached the U9 and U10 boys for FC America to a pair of undefeated seasons.
