MATT SHEPPARDBradford Co-operative Storage Ltd - Bradford
Matt has been the General Manager of the Bradford Co-operative Storage Ltdsince 2008. The Co-op services the unique Holland Marsh, Cookstown andKeswisk marshes, which boast the richest soil in North America. The Co-op is oneof Ontario’s last farmer owned co-operatives. Matt takes pride in giving localfarmers the same purchasing power as factory farms, providing a ready source ofquality crop inputs and exceptional customer service. Matt is a member of theOFVGA Crop Protection Committee and the co-chair of the Holland MarshHorticultural Advisory Committee.
Matt began his career in agriculture in the Holland Marsh at Antonio BajarGreenhouses Ltd., where he worked from 1998 to 2008 as Director of Operations.Matt earned his Business Diploma from Seneca College in King. He was raised inBradford and continues to reside there with his wife and two sons.
MARY RUTH McDONALDUniversity of Guelph - Guelph
Dr. Mary Ruth McDonald is a professor in the Department of Plant Agriculture,University of Guelph, Ontario. Her research focuses on plant diseases andintegrated pest management of vegetable crops including onions, carrots, leafygreens and Brassica crops. The program also investigates clubroot of canola andfoliar diseases of pulse crops. She teaches a first year biology course and agraduate course on plant disease management. Mary Ruth is the ResearchProgram Director for the Plant Production theme of the OMAFRA/University ofGuelph partnership. She has received a number of regional, national andinternational awards for extension education. Recently, the Muck Crops IPMprogram received the International IPM Award of Excellence for a regionalprogram, from the International IPM Symposium.
Mary Ruth received her B. Sc (Agr), M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the University ofGuelph where she specialized in plant protection and plant pathology. She hasworked in the Bradford Marsh area since the 1980’s as a pest management scout,Pest Management Advisor, Research Scientist and Station Manager with theOntario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, before joining the Universityof Guelph.
SHAWN JANSEUniversity of Guelph – Holland Marsh
Shawn was born and raised in the Holland Marsh. Shawn graduated from theUniversity of Guelph’s Associated Diploma in Agriculture in 1990 where hespecialized in the horticulture program. Shawn has worked at the Muck CropsResearch Station as an Agricultural Technician, and is has been the ResearchStation Manager since the summer of 1999. Shawn is also responsible for theOnion and Carrot Variety Trials conducted at the Research Station

MARION PAIBOMESAIVegetable Crops Specialist – OMAFRA - Guelph
Marion started with OMAFRA as a vegetable crops specialist in July 2010. In thisposition, Marion is involved in vegetable research projects and transferring IPMand production information to growers and delivery personnel. She worked as asummer student with OMAFRA for 2 years and was involved in scouting cole androot crops across southern Ontario and developing pest identification keys forOntario CropIPM.
Marion received her B.Sc. (2007) and M.Sc. (2010) from the University of Guelphin integrative biology.
ERIC ROZEMAData Analyst, Holland Marsh Growers’ Association
Eric earned a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences at the Universityof Guelph in 2012 majoring in Environmental Biology. Following its completion heremained at the University of Guelph and began working on a Masters degreewhich he finished in August 2014. Eric's thesis research evaluated the potential ofusing wetland plants to improve the treatment of greenhouse wastewater inconstructed treatment wetlands, specifically focusing on the removal of Na and Cl.
Eric currently works with the Holland Marsh Growers’ Association (HMGA) as adata analyst. As the data analyst he is responsible for the management, analysis,and reporting of the water quality data collected through the HMGA Water Project.He also works on finding appropriate technologies for the treatment of vegetablewash water and aids with the creation and production of factsheets and articles forthe HMGA website.
GURVINDER MUNDIUniversity of Guelph - Guelph
Gurvinder is currently pursuing a PhD in Environmental Engineering at theUniversity of Guelph with the School of Engineering and Food ScienceDepartment. His current work focuses on characterising different types of washwaters and their treatment options. Past work entailed looking at wash watertreatment and management in addition to water recycling. He actively pursuesprofessional development opportunities by volunteering for various organizationsand attending workshops related to water industry.
He has a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering and has alsocompleted his Masters of Applied Sciences in the same field at University ofGuelph. His masters work assessed ways of effectively removing solids fromwashwater from the processing of vegetables.
His interests include being outdoors, camping, golfing and playing with soil and water.

CHANDRA MADRAMOOTOOMcGill University – Montreal
Dr. Chandra Madramootoo is the Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural andEnvironmental Sciences, Associate Vice Principal of McGill University, a memberof the senior academic leadership team of McGill University, and a James McGillProfessor in the Department of Bioresource Engineering. His areas of professionalexpertise include water management, irrigation, drainage, water quality, watershedmanagement, food security, agricultural research, and international agriculturedevelopment. He was elected President of the International Commission onIrrigation and Drainage (ICID) from 2008 to 2011. Dean Madramootoo is amember of the Governing Board of the International Crops Research Institute forthe Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), one of the 15 Centers supported by theConsultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and iscurrently Chair of the Research Program Committee of the ICRISAT Board.
Dr. Madramootoo obtained his BSc (Agr. Eng), MSc and PhD degrees inagricultural engineering at McGill and has also developed his academic career atMcGill as a professor in irrigation and drainage engineering, rising rapidly throughthe academic ranks. Professor Madramootoo has built a very strongly fundedresearch program covering various aspects of water resources management, andsoil and water engineering. He continues to study extensively the hydrology andwater quality of surface and subsurface drained fields, the development ofinnovative technologies to predict crop water requirements, and the impacts ofvarious water management practices on greenhouse gas emissions.
GENEVIEVE GRENONMcGill University – Montreal
Genevieve is a Research assistant with Dr. Madramootoo at McGill University.She has worked since September 2014 on the McGill Holland Marsh project toimplement and study controlled water management in organic farming. Shecompleted her BSc in Environmental Science with a focus on EnvironmentalChange in 2013 followed by an MSc in Integrated Water Resource Managementfrom the department of Bioresourcce Engineering in 2014.
BRUCE IRONSBASF Canada Inc
Bruce is a Horticulture Technical Specialist with BASF Canada Inc. Bruce lives inStratford, Ontario with his wife, Glynis and their two sons, Mark and Bradley. Brucehas a B.Ag Management degree from the University of Natal, South Africa and hasbeen a Certified Crop Advisor in Ontario since Jan 2000. He immigrated to Canadafrom South Africa with his family in 1999.
Since arriving in Canada, Bruce has worked in Ag retail with cash crop andpotato growers and as a Field Sales Manager in the corn and soybean seedbusiness. Since 2011, his focus has been on horticulture and biological pestcontrol in the greenhouse, cranberry and turf markets. Bruce recently joinedBASF’s horticulture division after the acquisition of Becker Underwood Canada in2013. His responsibilities include technical support for BASF products used invegetables, greenhouse and turf.

AHMED ABD ELMAGIDUniversity of Guelph – Holland Marsh
Ahmed is a Plant Pathologist at the Muck Crops Research Station (MCRS),Department of Plant Agriculture, University of Guelph, Ontario. He joined MCRS inOctober 2014. Ahmed received his B.Sc. (Agr) and M.Sc. from Assiut University,Egypt in 1999 and 2003, respectively. In 2006 he worked for one year at WesternAustralia University as a research assistant. During that year he screened manyAustralian Canola cultivars against the downy mildew disease to identify newsources of resistance. Then he moved to Oklahoma State University, USA, wherehe got his Ph.D. from Entomology and Plant Pathology Department in June, 2012.Then, he moved to University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he did his firstpostdoctoral at the Center for Plant Science innovation between July 2012 andOctober 2014. He worked in the soybean transformation unit.
BRIAN COLLINSUniversity of Guelph - Guelph
Brian is a completing his M.Sc. in Plant Agriculture at the University of Guelph.His research involves evaluating possible management practices for Fusarium wiltof spinach. Field trials were completed during the 2012-2014 field seasons todetermine the efficacy of cultivar selection, seed treatments, soil amendments,and soil fumigation. Brian is also a 5th generation vegetable farmer who growsbunched leafy green vegetables.
JASON LEMAYUniversity of Guelph - Guelph
Jason is a current graduate student in Dr. Mary Ruth McDonald’s lab in thedepartment of plant agriculture at the University of Guelph. His research focus isin improving the IPM of carrot rust fly in Ontario. Jason graduated from theUniversity of Guelph with a B.Sc. (Env) with a major in environmental biology andworked as a nursery crop scout and field technician for Landscape Ontario beforestarting grad school.

ZACH TELFERUniversity of Guelph – Guelph
Zach is an MSc candidate in the School of Environmental Sciences, University ofGuelph, Ontario supervised by Dr. Mary Ruth McDonald and Dr. Cynthia Scott-Dupree. His current research is focused on improving the management of thecarrot weevil. This project aims to better understand the cause of yearly variationin carrot weevil damage, improve chemical control of the carrot weevil, and assessthe Holland Marsh for natural enemies of the carrot weevil.
Zach received his B. Sc from the University of Guelph where he focused onentomology and Integrated Pest Management (IPM). His undergraduate thesisassessed the potential for a commercially available biological control agent toreduce spotted wing drosophila infestations.
DENNIS VAN DYKUniversity of Guelph – Holland Marsh
Dennis has been the IPM program coordinator at the Muck Crops ResearchStation since the spring of 2014. He supervises the pest management program,diagnoses plant diseases, runs pest forecasting models, and is involved with thevegetable crop research at the Muck Crops Research Station. Dennis is also apart-time Masters student at the University of Guelph. His thesis research is onnematode management for carrots and tomatoes. Dennis received his B.Sc. inBiology from York University and started working at the Muck Crops ResearchStation as a research assistant and technician in 2010.
JOE NUNEZUniversity of California - Bakersfield
Joe is the vegetable and plant pathology farm advisor for the University ofCalifornia Cooperative Extension assigned to Kern County. Kern County has over36420 hectares of vegetables in production each year. Carrots, potatoes, sweetpotatoes, onions, garlic, tomatoes, melons and various leafy vegetables are grownin Kern County. Mr. Nunez conducts research on a wide variety of these vegetablecrops. Cavity spot of carrots, bacterial early dying of potato, CMV of peppers andcrop sustainability are some of Mr. Nunez’s areas of research. Joe is also anadjunct professor at Bakersfield College where he teaches vegetable cropproduction.
Joe received his Masters of Science at California State University, Fresno in PlantSciences and a Bachelors of Science in Biology at California PolytechnicUniversity, San Luis Obispo. He has been a farm advisor for UCCE since 1996 andlives in Bakersfield California.

KEVIN VANDER KOOIUniversity of Guelph – Holland Marsh
Kevin was born and raised on a vegetable farm in the Holland Marsh. Hegraduated from the University of Guelph’s Associated Diploma in Agricultureprogram. His main focus of study was horticulture. Kevin worked at the Muck CropsResearch Station as a summer student. He is currently the Research Technicianfor Dr. Mary Ruth McDonald’s research program. He enjoys building specializedequipment and improving the technical methods used in the research and seeingthe outcome of the research.
He has been involved in the Royal Winter Fair in the Horticultural educationcentre and as an exhibitor.
PAMELA MARTINForestry Program Assistant,Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority (LSRCA).
Pam assists with the tree planting program watershed wide, and is responsiblefor the Holland Marsh Riparian Planting Program. Pamela provides technicaladvice and administers financial support for tree and shrub planting projectimplementation through LSRCA’s Landowner Environmental Assistance Program(LEAP), as well as the York Natural Planting Partnership (YNPP) and the SimcoeCounty Tree Planting Program. Pamela received her B.A.S. (Hon) from theUniversity of Guelph majoring in Zoology and Geography, and an EcosystemManagement Technician Diploma from Sir Sandford Fleming College. She hasworked with LSRCA since 2009 in a variety of roles.
KATLEYA YOUNG-CHINStewardship Technician, Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority (LSRCA).
Katleya is responsible for delivering stewardship programming within the LakeSimcoe watershed. Katleya provides stewardship outreach, technical advice andadministers financial support for project implementation through LSRCA’sLandowner Environmental Assistance Program (LEAP). Katleya received her BA(Hon) from Brock University, majoring in Environment & Human Geography andhas recently joined LSRCA after working with the Niagara Peninsula ConservationAuthority for a number of years.

Jim has a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Guelph, is an activemember of the Certified Crop Advisors of Ontario. Jim began his career as a salesrepresentative for Chipman Chemical Ltd. in Haldimand-Norfolk counties throughthe early 80’s, and moved on to become a Product Service Lead for Zeneca AgProducts in Eastern Canada and the Northeastern United States. He then movedto Southwestern Ontario as a Territory Sales Representative for Syngenta Canadafrom 2001 – 2013. Jim is now based out of Waterford Ontario as AgronomicService Representative for Horticulture. His focus is around crop protection andthe Syngenta vegetable seed line.
LAURA AARTSBayer CropScience
Lauras has been a horticultural sales representative with Bayer CropSciencesince 2005. She is involved with the many vegetable and fruit crops that are grownin Ontario with a large focus being on potatoes, onions, grapes, tree fruit andginseng. Prior to working at Bayer CropScience Laura ran a crop scouting programin Norfolk county through Sylvite Agri Services for many vegetable crops such ascarrots, onions, potatoes, peppers and vine crops. In 2002, Laura received herhonors B. Sc from the University of Guelph. While in university Laura spent hersummers working for KCMS, a scouting service in the Niagara region focusing ongrapes, tender fruit and pears. Laura is also a director on the Oxford County Soil& Crop Improvement Association.
PETER GRAUERTConcepa Consultant - Germany
Peter started his career in 1978 as the Product Manager for an internationalvegetable seed company and was focused on onions, which was going through arenaissance in those days in Germany. This renaissance of onions requiredintensive advisory work from him. In 1988 Peter became the Crop /Field Mangerfor a vegetable trader/exporter in Italy. Peter was responsible for various vegetablecrops including the management of 70 ha overwintering onions. In 1990 Peterbecame a Manager for Nickerson-Zwaan (today Hazera) and was responsible forthe onion variety portfolio. Under Peter’s direction the portfolio developed tobecome the market leader in Germany and the additional countries (A, CH, SLK,and CZ). Within the Limagrain international vegetable organisation he providedsupport with technical education/seminars etc to the markets in Poland,Scandinavia, Netherlands, Italy, New Zealand, Israel, and South Africa. Thisexpertise allowed Nickerson-Zwaan to carry out international onion conferencesand study tours under his guidance. In 2012 Peter set up his consultant companyConcepa, offering his many years of expertise and knowledge to the agriculturalindustry.
Peter received his under graduate degree in Agronomy in 1975. Peter’s Ph.D.Thesis was “Fungus Resistance of Sunflower against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum” andgraduated in 1978 from the University of Giessen in Germany.

Deanna Nemeth is a Nutrient Management Program Lead in horticulture cropswith OMAF and MRA, Vineland. Her role is to help transfer nutrient managementresearch and technology to the horticultural sector in Ontario.
CHRISTOPH KESSEL Nutrition (Horticulture) - Program Lead, OMAFRA, Guelph
Christoph is the Nutrition (Horticulture)-Program Lead with OMAFRA and aCertified Crop Advisor. He works with producers, industry associations,researchers and ministry colleagues to improve crop nutrition and fertilitymanagement in horticultural crops through research projects, demonstrations andworkshops. After graduating from the University of Guelph, he worked in thenursery industry before joining OMAFRA as the Nursery Crops Specialist.
CLARENCE SWANTONUniversity of Guelph - Guelph
Dr. Swanton obtained his BSc in Botany from the University of Toronto, His MScin Agrometerology from the University of Guelph, and a PhD in Plant Ecology fromthe University of Western Ontario. During the years between earning his MSc andhis PhD, he was employed as a field agronomist with the Campbell Soup Companyof Canada and later as a weed biologist with the Ontario Ministry of Agricultureand Food. In 1985 he joined the University of Guelph as a faculty member in theDepartment of Crop Science. In 1996 he was promoted to full professor. From1998 to 2004, Clarence served as the first Chair of the Department of PlantAgriculture which included the Departments of Crop Science, Horticulture and theHorticulture Research Institute of Ontario. From 2007 to 2008 he served asPresident of the Canadian Weed Science Society. He has won numerous awardsfor his research including: the Ontario Agricultural College DistinguishedResearcher Award, University of Guelph Presidential Distinguished ProfessorAward, Excellence in Weed Science Award for Canada, and the Weed ScienceSociety of America’s Outstanding Researcher Award. He is an elected Fellow ofthe Canadian Society of Agronomy, the Canadian Weed Science Society and theWeed Science Society of America. In 2011, he was elected to the WaterfordDistrict High School Hall of Fame. In 2011 he was appointed by Dupont CropProtection (US) to serve on their Discovery Visions Advisory Board. In 2013 hereceived the Outstanding Canadian in the area of Crop Protection from Bayer(Crop Science) for exceptional contributions to science and innovation. Hisresearch is focussed on weed ecology and the development of integrated weedmanagement systems for field and horticultural crops.

Anne is a Soil Science graduate from the University of Guelph. She has workedfor OMAFRA since 1988, starting as a Soil Conservation Advisor working in Essexand Kent. Currently Anne works in the area of horticultural soil management withprojects in a wide variety of soil management areas such as erosion, compactionand water management. Promoting the use of cover crops and supporting bettersoil health are her passion.
