Research at HEC is organized around “peaks of excellence”. These peaks are fields of research where HEC has a critical mass of researchers and a substantial scientific production. In 2015, we have updated our description of the six peaks of excellence and we have identified two emerging competi-tion & innovation and marketing. The 2015 research report presents the activities and the outputs of all these fields.

In Table 1, we present summary statistics for each research field. A large majority of our sci-entific production falls within one of our fields meaning that our partition of research covers a large fraction of our output. The next challenge is of course to strengthen the output and the reputation of our peaks of excellence. In the future, our two main objectives are more completed PhD (we expect to reach in the near future an average of 10 per year) and higher quality publications in our peaks and we will specially target publications classified A and B in our journal referential (included at the end of this report).

In 2016, HEC has confirmed its dual objective of developing research with impact among the international research community and among the regional business community. The visit of the international scientific committee (COSCI) in May 2016 has highlighted the progress made by HEC and set up the next milestones in terms of research productivity.

Actions will continue to be taken at both the individual researcher level but also at the ag-gregate level (peaks of excellence). Our aim is to improve the quality as well as the impact of our publications. In terms of impact, over the last 5 years, several scientific events (4th EMES International Research Conference on Social Enterprise, Corporate Finance Day 2013, French Finance Association Meeting 2016, etc.) were the opportunity to put HEC Liège “on the map” and to invite renowned scholars on campus. The events gather leading academics in various research areas with the local re-gional business community.

We will continue to promote research excellence at HEC by providing PhD and Postdoc grants, publication incentives. Our current challenge will be to work on key performance indicators for research productivity.

The Research Management

The coordination of all research activities at HEC is performed by an umbrella organization called “Prisme” acting through its Resaerch Board.

Prisme coordinates, supports and organizes the scientific life at HEC. In particular, it par-ticipates to the financing of the Research (see below – Research Funding) and advises the Mana-gement Board in fields related to the research and the doctoral studies. The Research Board is composed of representative of the research centers and the departments.

The Academic Director of Research chairs the Research Board of PRISME and the Doctoral Program Committee. He is one the school’s representative at the University Research Council.

The International Scientific Committee (COSCI) is an advisory body of Prisme formed by top level scientific personalities in the various fields of research of the School. The COSCI gives its opinion for the assessment of the School scientific production and for the conception of its main strategic research orientations. It meets every two years but regular contacts are maintained on a continuous basis with the individual members and theme-based meetings are organized with some of them.

Support for the Research Activity

Two services help the researchers in their activities. The first helps them in their search for financing and in the relation management during the period of the contract. The second, named GPS service, administratively supports the research of the School. It aims at alleviating the admi-nistrative workload of the researchers. It gives guidance for the search of funds, for optimizing and organizing budgets. It also develops a strategic monitoring of all funding sources from the interna-tional and national institutions, corporations or associations.

The University of Liege has two services to support the research activity. The Mobility Cen-ter of the University of Liege can help researchers in all the adminsitrative tasks in relation with their stay abroad and the international researchers in relation with their stay in Belgium. The ARD (Admistration of research and development) provides support for organizing, managing and fun-ding large research projects.

The Researchers at HEC have access to the Graulich University Librairy that provides access to more than 120 databases, including EconLit, Bibliothèque Fonds Quételet, Business Source Pre-mier (EBSCO), REPEC, Cairn.fr, Dissertation Abstracts, Francis, Sociological Abstracts, ScienceDi-rect and a large collection of books (>400.000 titles) and scientific journals, available both electro-nically and as paper copies. In addition, HEC finances access to the main database notably Belfirst, Morningstar and S&P Capital IQ.

The Research Centers and their Articulation with the Peaks and the Chairs

13 research centers are the main pillars of the research activities. The table below summa-rizes the links between the peaks of excellence (our flagships of research), the research centers (the place were research is effectively organized) and the sponsored chaires.

The activity of our research centers is detailed on our website: http://www.hec.ulg.ac.be/en/faculty-research/fields-research-centers

Together with the service in charge of the communication, the research centers also develop some specific communication channels to their main partners and the scientific community.

Asset & Risk Management

HEC L iège Research Repor t 2015 HEC L iège Research Repor t 201510

Closely in touch with the latest prac-tices in portfolio management, fundamen-tal equity research and financial risk mana-gement, the Finance Department of HEC Liège Management School has founded the “Center for Asset and Risk Manage-ment (CARM)”.

The current macroeconomic condi-tions pose a great challenge with regard to optimal public as well as private fund allo-cation.

The center runs an applied research program focusing on practical applications for education and the professional com-munity. The research program is organi-zed along four research lines.

1. Asset Management: Research activi-ties on asset management focus on opti-mal allocation strategies under different economic context. The strategies which are examined in this program range from traditional portfolio optimization tech-niques under a mean-variance to advanced optimization under a higher-moment fra-mework as well as to smart beta or alter-native strategies. We evaluate the risks and performance of those strategies with a particular attention on the more dyna-mic trading strategies performed by hedge funds and mutual funds. Our future re-search agenda integrates smart beta stra-tegies which have proved to be resilient to economic turmoil in the financial markets.

2. Financial Risk Management: Financial risks and their impacts on our markets are more than ever a matter of crucial inte-rest to market participants, regulators and public authorities. Research activities on financial risk management focus on mode-ling and pricing firm and/or country specific market, exchange rate, liquidity and credit risks in equity and bond markets. Current work of our team concentrates on three research directions: (i) the role of market conditions in the underlying mechanisms and implications of financial risks, (ii) the analysis of the time-varying dynamics along which financial risks propagate across mar-kets and market participants, as well as (iii) the way institutional and macroeconomic conditions alter markets’ and market parti-cipants’ resilience to risk across developed, emerging and developing markets.

3. Operational Risk Management: Research activities in operational risk management focus on the development of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) strategies in HRO’s (High-Risk Organi-zations), based notably on the develop-ment of tools able to measure the level of safety culture and risk culture wit-hin these organizations. Establishing clear and precise links between the main human and organizational factors (HOFs) that are present in these organizations and the effi-ciency of ERM strategies that are implemented is then one of the major objectives of the on-going current researches and can be considered as the leading objec-tive in our strategic plan when considering ORM.

4. Corporate finance: The program’s objective is to inves-tigate drivers of growth in firm value. The program involves several aspect of equity re-search. First, it focuses on financial analysis and securi-ty valuation with its conse-quence on asset pricing and market anomalies in equity markets (size and book-to-market, profita-bility and investment po-licy). Second it focuses on private investments as sources of innova-tion and performance. We especially target the role of private investors (VC, PE) in those markets. Final-ly, optimal allocation strategy of private investors/entrepre-neurs is part of our research agenda.

Regional Economic Development

Social Enterprise & Business Ethics

HEC L iège Research Repor t 2015 HEC-ULg Research Repor t 201534

The peak of excellence « Social enterprise and Business Ethics » pursues three major goals:

- to develop research in the areas of so-cial enterprise and business ethics mainly from the perspectives of economics, man-agement and organization theory

- to feed, through its work, teaching in the areas of social enterprise and business ethics at the University of Liège and else-where;

- to participate in building an ecosystem that fosters the development of social en-terprises and ethically-driven businesses.

Research projects cover a wide range of topics, both at the theoretical and empiri-cal levels, using quantitative and/or quali-tative methodologies:

- conceptual work defining the no-tions of and related to social en-terprise and business ethics

- statistics measuring the scope of social and ethically-driven en-terprises and key indicators (e.g. size, employment, growth, ethical dimensions, etc.)

- social and environmental impact measurement

- ethics in business, corporate so-cial responsibility and partner-ships between social enterprises, foundations and businesses

- entrepreneurial profiles and tra-jectories of social and ethical en-trepreneurs

- emergence and development of social innovations in new fields of activity (e.g. ethical finance, fair trade, integration of low-skilled workers, etc.) and in the context of the sustainability transition (e.g. recycling, renewable energy, short food supply chains, etc.)

- financing of social enterprises, philanthropy and social invest-ment

- governance and HRM practices

- in social enterprises and foun-dations

- institutionalization, network-ing and public policies

- social enterprise and busi-ness ethics in developing countries

Research centres and researchers involved:

- Centre for Social Econo-my (CES)

- International Research Centre on the Pub-lic and Co-operative Economy (CIRIEC)

- Associated research-ers at HEC

The research projects are developed together with other international partners, such as the EMES International Research Network of which the CES is a founding member and has hosted the Coordination Unit since then. Other collaborations have been developed with universities (e.g. Oxford, Cambridge, etc.), management schools (e.g. ESSEC, HEC Paris, etc.) and international associations (e.g. ISTR) that develop research in the areas of social enterprise and business ethics.

Researchactivitiesinthefieldsofsupplychain management (SCM) and businessanalytics (BA) are focused on analyzingdatacollectedfromavarietyofsourcesanddecisionmaking informedbydataanalysisandsupportedbyoptimizationtechniques, with the aim of enabling enterprises andorganizationstoimprovetheirservicelevelsand operational efficiency, in particular inthe context of supply chain and logisticsmanagement.

The main areas of expertise arethereforeanalyticalmethodsofuncoveringbusiness insights and predicting futuresituations with use of data (statisticalanalysis, nonparametricregressionmodels, censored data analysis, discrete choicemodels, datamining, artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural languageprocessing, patternrecognition,…),andalsoof recommending decisions (operationsresearch, mathematical modelling andoptimization, stochastic programming, combinatorial optimization, integerprogramming, exactandheuristicsolutionapproaches, metaheuristics, functions ofbinaryvariables,…).

SCM is a major field of application ofsuch analytical methods, and these areasare frequently associated in the so-called“industrial engineering” departments ofmany foreign universities. At HEC Liège,they form an essential component of our“business engineering” curricula and arecloselylinkedduetothescientificprofilesofthepeopleinplace.Theresearchactivitiesin these fields focus on the followingapplicationareas:

Supply chain and operationsmanagement:designandcoordinationofsupply chains; design and coordinationof intermodal transport networks;production planning and scheduling;vehicleroutinginfreightandpassengertransport; inventory routing; vehicleloading in air and route transport;pricing and revenue managementin transport; transport economics;network economics; statisticalprocesscontrol

F i n a n c e : p o r t f o l i ooptimization; stock marketforecasting; operational riskmanagement

Marketing: clustering customercomplaints; question-answeringsystems

Research activities in the fields of SCM andBA are mostly based in theresearch centre QuantOM(Quantitative methods andOperations Management).QuantOM is the associationofseveralresearchersunderacommonlabeltostimulateand promote researchconducted at HEC Liège(or more broadly, withinthe ULg) in the fields ofquantitative methodsand of their applicationsin SCM and other areasof management andeconomics.

The Liege Competition & Innovation Institute (LCII)

The LCII is a research center of the University of Liege (“ULg”) created in 2013. It seeks to explore the complex relationship between competition and innovation in society, from both an economic and legal standpoints.

The LCII seeks to steer fundamental research on those issues in new directions, and possibly to influence the crafting of competition and innovation policies across Europe. To this end, the LCII focus its research activities on several, selected research axes.

Research method :

The LCII embraces the idea that cutting-edge research must be interdisciplinary in nature. Whether public or private, decision making is a multifaceted process, involving multidisciplinary considerations. Hence, the Institute promotes the coordination of complementary-but-diverse research capacities (law, economics, marketing …) in order to analyze industrial policy issues with which private undertakings and public authorities often struggle.

To this end, the LCII pools academics from HEC Management school and from the ULg law school. The LCII also benefits from the intellectual support of the network of experts active in the context of the LL.M in Competition Law and Intellectual Property of the ULg. It also relies on a larger network of competition and innovation professional, built through the organization of regular academic activities in the past years, notably in the context of the Brussels School of Competition.

The LCII applies innovative research methods (empirical studies, experiments, creation of databases, etc.) in order to confront the intuitive reasoning usually relied upon by the legislature and the judiciary with the mathematical and statistical analysis brought by economics.

Dissemination – Community pledge

The ultimate aim of research in social sciences is to help bring societal improvements. To this end, the results of research must be popularized and each piece of work must be optimally disseminated through society while the results.

The LCII’s academic production is widely spread through internationally renowned scientific publications and popularized through mainstream medias (news press and websites).

To disseminate its work product, the LCII relies on the present website and a quarterly newsletter addressed to a mailing list of competition and innovation policy experts. The LCII also develops a “policy brief ’” strategy, which consists in s y s t e m a t i c a l l y publishing executive summaries of research papers on its website.

Strategic Intelligence

Information is regarded as the es-sential raw material in today’s business. In contexts of uncertainty and constant change, companies, which know how to collect, to organize, to interpret and pro-tect relevant information effectively, are said to have a competitive advantage in the market. Therefore, making effective use of strategic intelligence is one of the most important challenges facing market-ers today. We are interested in developing a comprehensive and holistic understanding of what strategic intelligence represents so that marketing managers can plan the future direction and growth of their busi-ness in accordance with the stated mission and goals, recognize emerging trends and patterns within the particular industry and subsequently predict potential problems that may affect the current operating en-vironment. The recently founded Research Group “GRIS” (Groupe de Recherche en Intelligence Stratégique) complements our research in contributing a political and macro-economic perspective to this field.

Service Marketing and Management

The research in service marketing and management aims at examining functional and dysfunctional customer behavior in a service context with the objective to man-age and improve the customer experience in any kind of service sector. The research topics investigated are strongly influenced by issues and trends that have transformed the way service providers develop and de-liver their services to customers. We there-fore put specific focus on key trends such as demographic and social changes, dereg-ulation, digitalization and globalization as they have profoundly modified the context in which services are delivered and experi-enced by customers.

• Consumer experience in revolution-ary services and in the sharing econ-omy (access-based services, peer-to-peer sharing),

• Consumer experience in key ser-vices that have known many trans-formations (healthcare, financial services...),

• Service innovation, servitization, service infusion

• Organization and employee is-sues to guarantee successful service (organizational culture, employee competencies...)

Collaborative Economy and On-line Communities

Modern information and communication technologies have created new business models and communication platforms that enable and encourage greater degrees of participation and col-laboration. Thus, digitaliza-tion enables the democratic potential of alternative con-sumption modes and of on-line two-way communica-tion resulting in co-created value and brand meaning with consumers. More spe-cifically, our research aims at investigating the behav-ior of peer-to-peer cus-tomers in order to gain insight for developing successful segmenting, targeting and engage-ment strategies and on analyzing brand trust in online brand-based communities.
