Notes from the PodiumWelcome to our annual fall concert at the Eisemann Center, presenting No Strings Attached. I hope you will be as excited by this program as we have been in preparing it. While the program is a considerable challenge, this literature continues our efforts to provide our band members and audience with an extraordinary musical experience.

Our first formal concert of 2015 showcased music specifically written for wind band. For this fall performance, I have turned the tables and programmed music written originally for orchestra and adapted or “transcribed” for wind band. Early in the development of wind ensembles, there were only a few significant composers writing music for our medium. Bands often had to turn to orchestral transcriptions as a source of additional quality literature. Here we honor a series of symphony orchestra pieces that have over time proven very successful adaptations for wind band. These pieces represent master works by classical, romantic, and impressionistic composers. In addition, we are performing a piece written by the former conductor of the United States Coast Guard Band and contemporary composer, Lew Buckley.

We hope you enjoy the exuberance of Mozart, the magic of Debussy, the transcendence of Turina, the energy of Saint-Saëns, the joyeus Czech folk music of Weinburger, and the reflections of Buckley as the talented musicians of the Plano Community Band present, No Strings Attached.

ConductorsARTISTIC DIRECTOR AND PRINCIPAL CONDUCTOR Joe Frank, Jr. is a retired music educator and band director with over 35 years experience working with student and adult musicians in Texas and Georgia. He was born in Harlingen, in the Rio Grande Valley, and spent most of his adult years in Richardson and Sherman, Texas. Joe is a third-generation band director. His father, Joe Frank, Sr., was a well-known Texas band and orchestra director, and charter member of the Phi Beta Mu Band Director Hall of Fame. Joe taught for 17 years in the Richardson ISD, where mentors, such as Joe Frank, Sr., Richard Floyd, Tommy Guilbert, Robert Floyd, and Howard Dunn, helped form his concepts of teaching students, as well as interpreting, rehearsing, and performing wind band literature. In 1990, Joe became Director of Bands for the

Sherman ISD and helped lead the Sherman Bands to 15 years of successful performances, competitions, and statewide recognition. While living in Athens, Georgia, Joe became director of the Classic City Band and developed a love for working and making music with adults. Joe currently lives in Denison, Texas with his wife, Becky. He is a frequent clinician, consultant, and adjudicator for middle school and high school bands. His daughter, Jessica, currently plays clarinet in the Plano Community Band, and his son, Jeff, is a pediatric neurologist in Oregon. Joe enjoys sailing, golf, snow skiing, and traveling with Becky.

ASSOCIATE CONDUCTOR Jim Carter was born in Texas City, Texas, and has made Plano home since 1969, going through the Plano schools and the band program at Plano Senior High. During his high school days, Jim was privileged to have played with Doc Severinsen and Alan Vizzutti, and his first love always seemed to be jazz. After graduation, he was selected to play with the National Bandmasters Association Jazz Band, performing with Marvin Stamm at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Jim attended Sam Houston State University on a music scholarship, receiving his degree in Music Education in 1991. While at Sam Houston, Jim studied under Dr. Fisher Tull, Dr. Gary Sousa and Dr. Rod Cannon, headed up the recording and archiving of concert

performances and was a member of Kappa Kappa Psi. After teaching a couple of years, Jim returned to Plano and began working in the communications field. He currently holds the position of Director of A/V and Computer Services for the 4,500 member Custer Road United Methodist Church. To keep music in his life, Jim joined the Plano Community Band in 1993 as the baritone saxophone player. Jim also plays with many Dallas area jazz and big bands. He became the Band’s associate conductor in 1995.

Lewis J. Buckley was born in Columbus, Ohio, but considers himself a native of Florida, the state in which he grew up. He earned his undergraduate degree from the Eastman School of Music and his Master’s degree from Connecticut College. While at Eastman, he earned the Performer’s Certificate for outstanding performance on the trumpet, and he studied conducting and composition.

He enlisted into the U. S. Coast Guard Band in 1969, where he served as Principal Trumpet and Trumpet Soloist for six years. Then, in 1975, he became the Coast Guard Band’s fifth Director at age 27, a post he held for over 29 years, becoming the longest-tenured conductor of a senior military band in American history. Under his baton, the Coast Guard Band became a famed, national touring organization; released some 20 recordings; aired more taped and live concert broadcasts on National Public Radio than any other concert band, military or civilian, in the United States; and earned a reputation as one of the most accomplished wind bands in the world.

Since 2004, Buckley has been the Conductor and Artistic Director of the Manchester (CT) Symphony Orchestra. For fifteen years, he conducted the Hartford Symphony

Orchestra in its annual Symphony on Ice/Toys for Tots program, and he has also conducted the Eastern Connecticut Symphony during its summer series.

In 2007, he was named Music Director and Conductor of the Metropolitan Wind Symphony, a superb community wind band in the Boston area. This remarkable group has an active commissioning program which has added over two dozen works to the wind repertoire by composers including Johan de Meij, Peter Schickele, James Curnow, Michael Gandolfi (by consortium) Chen Yi, and, most recently, Buckley himself.

As a conductor, Buckley brings to the podium more than 40 years’ professional experience in an unusually wide range of music-making. He is equally at home conducting, writing, or performing, with bands, orchestras, and choruses, in all styles of music from classical to commercial to jazz. The guest artists whom he has conducted reflect his range of experience; they include Walter Cronkite, opera giant Placido Domingo, Lorrie Morgan and Lone Star of country fame, the Motown sound of Martha Reeves, and many others.

He continues to compose, arrange, and publish prolifically, bringing to his work the knowledge earned in 35 years on the podium, and his music is widely performed. He also remains an active trumpet soloist, frequently combining solo appearances with conducting, often in premiere performances of his own commissioned works.

Each spring, middle school and high school bands across the state are required to participate in a Texas University Interscholastic League (UIL) music contest. Each band prepares and performs three pieces of music for this contest. Many school bands in the Plano ISD have extra funding coming from band booster clubs which help pay for clinicians and other additional instruction toassist students in preparing their contest music to the highest level. But even with this donated money, some schools still cannot afford to pay for this extra instruction.

The Plano Community Band is proud to announce its new “Music for Life” musical outreach program, benefiting two middle schools in the PISD. This spring we are partnering with Bowman and Wilson Middle Schools. The PCB will learn the same music these schools are preparing for contest and will spend an afternoon at each school working with the

students. PCB musicians will work with students who play the same instrument they do and provide instruction and tips for performing the music. PCB conductors Joe Frank and Jim Carter will run a clinic for the entire group, and the kids will get to hear how the music sounds when played by more experienced musicians. The PCB and middle school students will come together and sit side-by-side to form one large band and put on a performance for parents.

We are excited to be able to provide this service to Bowman and Wilson Middle Schools, and look forward to sharing our talents with other schools in the future These two bands will be the PCB’s special guests at our spring concert on April 24 at the Eisemann Center. We hope to encourage these students to continue playing their instruments beyond middle and high school, and to perhaps become members of the Plano Community Band after they graduate.
