David Ferrell Head Coach David Ferrell completed his sec-ond season as the head coach in grand fashion. Ferrell led the Eagles to the playoffsin2014-15,thefirsttimetheprogramhasqualifiedforpost-season play in nearly ten years. In just two seasons, Ferrell has quickly built a competitive program, high-

lighted by a post-season appearance and strong back-to-back recruiting classes. Ferrell’s up-tempo style has proven to be among the most potent in the American Southwest Conference as it has ranked among the top scoring offenses the past two sea-sons. In 2014-15, Ferrell’s teams defeated every in-state school it played in regular season competition. Talented recruiting classes have elevated Ferrell as one of the top recruiters in Arkansas. In 2013-14 and 2014-15, he coached the conference Freshman of the Year. In all, three of his players have been on the ASC All-Freshman Team. In year one, Ferrell improved the team’s conference win total by two from the previous season as well as posting more overall wins. With his fast-paced philosophy and a strong recruit-ing class, the program demonstrated quick success asitwonthreeofitsfirstfivegames.Theprogramalso had a signature win over Concordia Univer-sity Texas late in the season. Guard Josh Ferrell was named ASC Freshman of the Year and received a spot on the All-Freshman Team. Guard Ricky Allen led the conference in assists and earned national accolades when he made the D3Hoops.com Team of the Week. Ferrell followed that season with a post-season appearance and another ASC Freshman of the Year award. With a solid foundation in place, Ferrell’s program aims for even more success in year three with four starters returning. Prior to Ozarks, Ferrell spent 21 years as the head boy’s basketball coach at West Fork High School where he posted a 458-176 (.733) record and made eight trips to the state tournament. He compiled a 510-202 (.716) career record in 24 years as a head coach at Shiloh Christian, Lincoln, Gravette and West Fork. Ferrell was voted the head coach of the Arkansas High Coaches Association (AHSCA) All-Star Game in 1994 and 2011. Ferrell was also the athletics director for 12 years at WFHS Ferrell, who has worked alongside Gus Malzahn, Mike Anderson and Jimmy Dykes during his coaching career, served as the Vice-President of the Arkan-sas High School Basketball Coaches Association. He founded the popular Arkansas Athletes Outreach Top-25 basketball camp in 1995.

Chris Goodman Assistant Coach Chris Goodman enters his second season as the assistant men’s basketball coach. Good-manhelpedtheprogramtoitsfirstconference playoff appearance in nearly a decade last season. Goodman, a former standout guard and assistant basketball coach at NCAA Division III Hen-drix College, was among the top

guards in the Southern Athletic Association Confer-ence. His work with Ozarks’ guards has resulted in ranking among the top scoring teams in the league. A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Goodman hit 179 career three-pointers from 2008-12 playing the point guard and shooting guard positions for Hendrix. Goodman, who served as a team captain his senior season, hit a season-best 65 three-pointers his junior year. After his playing career, Goodman served as a volunteer assistant at Keller Central High School dur-ing the 2012 season. He then went to Hendrix where he was a volunteer assistant with the men’s program during the 2013-2014 season. Goodman received his bachelor’s degree in kine-siology from Hendrix in 2012. He and his wife, Amber, were married in 2013.

Ferrell received his bachelor’s degree and mas-ter’s degree in Physical Education from University of Arkansas. Ferrell and his wife, Kelly, are the parents of three children, Josh, Jassa and Jordyn.

Eagles Build Off Playoff Experience The men’s basketball team turned the corner un-derheadcoachDavidFerrellashisEaglesqualifiedfor the 2014-2015 American Southwest Conference Tournamentforthefirsttimeinnearlyadecade. Now, Ferrell inherits four starters to fuel high expec-tations heading into the 2015-2016 season. “One of our strengths is experience,” said Ferrell. “We have four returning starters so we are a year older and a year better in four positions. We also have six to eight other guys that got a lot of minutes. Qualifying for the playoffs has helped with momen-tum coming into this season. It was a big deal for our kids. They have shown it is possible.” Senior Kelby Robinson, sophomore Jace Richard-son and juniors Josh Ferrell and Josh Berard are back to form an experienced nucleus. Richardson, a 6-foot point guard, was named the ASC Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the All-Freshman Team. Robinson, a 6-foot-6 junior for-ward, was named to the All-Conference Third Team. “Kelby is better now than he was last season,” said Ferrell. “He is a team player. He can play a num-ber of positions. He will be able to play more of his natural position this season. Jace and Dylan Gray did a spectacular job. Josh Berard is a good player and Josh Ferrell changes defenses with his shooting abil-ity. Money can’t buy two years of experience in the ASC with Kelby, Josh Berard and Josh Ferrell.” Richardson was the top scoring freshman in the league with a 13.3 points per game average. He also led all conference freshmen in assists (4.2) and steals (1.3). Robinson had a breakout season, ranking tenth intheASCinscoring(15.5),fifthinrebounding(7.8),ninthinfieldgoalpercentage(42%),thirteenthinfreethrowpercentage(72%)andeighthinsteals(1.3).Ferrell,a6-foot-1guard,averagednearlyfivepointsper game and 1.8 steals and 2.3 assists per game. Berard, a 6-foot-3 guard, ranked second on the team with a 14.2 scoring average. Berard also aver-aged 4.7 rebounds per game. Gray, a sophomore forward who earned a spot on the ASC All-Freshman Team, and sophomore guard Ben Grice saw substan-tial minutes last season. Gray averaged 8.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per game, while Grice scored over fivepointspergame.TheEaglessawsignificantimprovementwhencompeting against the upper echelon teams in the conference. Ozarks dropped a pair of nail-biters to perennial conference powers Texas-Dallas and Mary Hardin-Baylor.

“Improving is one thing, but you’d like to come through and win those types of games,” said Ferrell. “I hope we are closer this year.” In addition to four returner starters, the program brought in a solid freshmen class to go along with a prized transfer. The biggest addition is Pete Barber, a 7-foot, 280-pound transfer. “Pete gives us a dimension we haven’t had,” said Ferrell. “He gives us an inside presence, shot blocker and a guy that can score in the paint. I’m excited about him.”TheEaglesfinished8-18overalland4-16intheconference a year ago. Ferrell and his squad hope to extend the year into the post-season. “We really haven’t set a goal for a number of wins,” said Ferrell. “The playoffs are on everyone’s minds from day one. As much as people talk about it, it is something we work for. I’m sure our players would tell you that they want to make a repeat playoff appearance. I think we are close, but close doesn’t get you very far in this league.”

ATHLETICS

The American Southwest Conference, one of the largest intercollegiate athletic conferences in NCAA Division III, is in its second decade of providing quality athletic experiences for its student-athletes, coaches and administrators. Founded in May 1996 to provide a structure for intercollegiate athletics among member institutions, the American Southwest Conference includes former members of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) and other institutions from outside the Texas borders. From the eight founding institutions to today’s present group of 13 college and universities, the ASC encompasses institutions sharing similar educational and athletic philosophies. The roster of American Southwest Conference members includes Belhaven Univer-sity, Concordia University Texas, East Texas Bap-tist University, Hardin-Simmons University, Howard Payne University, LeTourneau University, Louisi-ana College, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry University, University of the Ozarks, Sul Ross State University, University of Texas at Dallas and University of Texas at Tyler. ASC championships are conducted in 16 sports (8 men, 8 women). Men’s championships are offered in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and track and field. Women’s championships are offered in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field and volleyball. The American Southwest Conference is headquartered in Richardson, Texas.
