WE’VE SPENT THE BETTER PART OF A DECADE BUILDING A REPERTORY THAT RIVALS THAT OF ANY LARGE-SCALE CLASSICAL BALLET COMPANY IN THE WORLD, adding works by the greatest and most sought-after choreographers of our time, while continuing to provide opportunities for promising newcomers. This season offers a beautiful balance of ballets by familiar favorites and the next generation of innovators.

George Balanchine has been a constant in our company’s rich history. Despite his Georgian birth, he considered himself the quintessential American, often sporting a bolo tie and feeding off the energy of New York City to create his iconic ballet company. Four of his ballets are on proud display this year, and the unveiling of his winning Nutcracker, with all new sets and costumes by Ian Falconer, is the centerpiece of our season.

I love this season. You will, too. See you at the ballet.

HOW MANY OF YOU have been counting the days until you could see Crystal Pite’s Emergence again? I know I have and our dancers feel the same way. There are three works this season by members of our PNB family and the first is Kiyon Gaines’ electric Sum Stravinsky, which opens our second program. A haunting work by Jessica Lang receives its Company premiere alongside a world premiere by our own Price Suddarth. If you’ve ever wanted to look into a crystal ball to see works by the next generation of dance makers, this program is for you.

JEAN-CHRISTOPHE MAILLOT’S brilliant take on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet garnered classic status when PNB became the first American company to present it almost a decade ago. Though Maillot is the mastermind behind this intoxicating creation, equal credit goes to his collaborators—lighting designer Dominique Drillot, set designer Ernest Pignon-Ernest, and PNB favorite, costume designer Jérôme Kaplan (Don Quixote and Giselle).

PNB'S PAUL GIBSON WEARS SEVERAL HATS: an essential ballet master, scheduler, and teacher. In his spare time, he’s an impressive choreographer, too. Rush premiered in the Mercer Arts Arena in 2003 and though we don’t want to revisit the venue, the ballet deserves another look. Reworked for this program, Rush kicks off a trio of works featuring PNB premieres by two talented youngsters—Alejandro Cerrudo’s Little mortal jump and Justin Peck’s Year of the Rabbit. Cerrudo is Resident Choreographer for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and Peck is New York City Ballet’s Resident Choreographer. This trio of contemporary works offers an energetic mix of speed, sculpture, and fresh musical offerings.

WHEN THE CURTAIN GOES UP on PNB’s delightful Coppélia, audiences applaud and anticipation is rewarded as this heartwarming comedy works its magic. Balanchine offers pristine choreography for our tiniest ballerinas from PNB School, plus spirited mime topped off with bravura dancing.

This one’s perfect for the entire family!

WE CLOSE THE SEASON with a look at three of the greatest choreographers of our time and their take on the American landscape. Square Dance, originally performed with a caller seated atop bales of hay, equates the formal patterns of square dancing with the architecture of Vivaldi, Corelli, and classical ballet. Robbins’ first work, Fancy Free, not only put himself, set designer Oliver Smith, and composer Leonard Bernstein on the map; it charted a whole new course for American theater and dance. One bar, two broads, and three sailors on leave—did someone say plot?

How do you close out a stellar season like this one? What could possibly be the final firework? Only Twyla Tharp’s Waiting at the Station, her epic creation for PNB to the foot-stomping rhythms of Allen Toussaint, could pull that off. Yes, the train’s pulling into the station and you have the chance to get on board.
