Welcome
To those new students reading this for the first time, wel-come to the University of Manitoba Department of Phar-macology and Therapeutics Graduate Program. You have joined a dedicated group of researchers pursuing knowledge creation and knowledge translation in the bio-medical sciences. The following document is meant to be a guide and resource as you move through our pro-gram. For those more seasoned graduate students, I encourage you to have a look as well, as there are some changes being implemented in our program that we feel will make it an even better educational and research ex-perience for you. While this guide will answer many of your questions, should there be issues or questions that arise during your time in our program concerning require-ments, or graduate studies procedures, please consult with either Karen Donald or myself. Good luck and good science to you all, looking forward to your time in our graduate program.

Master`s Program A minimum of nine (9) credit hours in 7000 level courses is mandatory for the M.Sc. program. Mandatory courses GRAD 7500 Academic Integrity Tutorial (must be com-pleted or a hold will be placed on your academic ac-count) umanitoba.ca/faculties/graduate_studies/registration/grad7500FAQ.html PHAC 7132 General Pharmacology Cardiovascular or PHAC 7134 General Pharmacology Neuroscience and PHAC 7222 Molecular Pharmacology Maximum time to completion is four (4) years for full-time students.
Reoccurring Requirements
All Completed forms are returned to the Pharmacolo-gy and Therapeutics office for processing. The De-partmental Office will register all students.
You are required to attend discussion groups/seminars. The requirements are explained in section 4.7.5 in the supplemental regulations. A minimum degree grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 with no grade below C+ must be maintained to continue in the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Each student will present a research progress report to the Department in the form of an oral presentation followed by questions and discussion.
If you are within 18 months from the start of your pro-
gram an have not yet finished your Masters, you may transfer to the Ph.D. program within the same unit up-on the recommendation by the Head of the unit to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Masters Thesis Prior to the distribution of your thesis, please submit
the Master’s Thesis/Practicum Title and Appointment of Examiners” form.

will distribute your Thesis to the examiners. If written Thesis is acceptable you may proceed to
your Oral Examination. (Contact the departmental of-fice to assist in setting up your oral examination) Master’s Thesis/Practicum Final Report Form must be filled out by the examining committee.
Upon approval of the thesis by the examining commit-
tee and the completion of any revisions required by that committee, the thesis, must be submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies as an e-thesis/practicum at the MSpace website.

Ph.D. Program Students entering the program with a relevant M.Sc. de-gree will be required to take six (6) credit hours (at the 7000 level). Students in the pharmacology M.Sc. program who elect to transfer (during the first 18 months) to the Ph.D. program the fifteen (15) credit hours are still required, however, any 7000 courses taken as part of their M.Sc. program will count toward this requirement. Ph.D. Thesis It is the responsibility of the Faculty of Graduate Studies to distribute the electronic version of the thesis to all examin-ers. The Faculty of Graduate Studies shall attempt to en-sure that the thesis is distributed to examiners as soon as possible after the submission of all required documentation. The Academic Schedule in the Graduate Calendar should be consulted regarding dates by which theses must be sub-mitted. Once the thesis has been submitted to the Faculty of Grad-uate Studies, neither the candidate nor the advisor/co-advisor shall have any communication with the examining committee regarding the thesis. However should the need arise, the external examiner may contact the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies to discuss any issues related to the thesis. PRIOR TO SCHEDULING THE ORAL EXAMINATION
The following must be assured prior to scheduling the oral examination: (Contact the departmental office for assis-tance in setting up your oral examination) Attendance of internal examiners It is required that all internal members of the examining committee be present at the defence, unless exceptional circumstances prevent this and prior approval of the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies has been given. If for any reason an internal examiner is unable to be present in person, participation via video-conferencing may be ap-proved by FGS depending on the constitution of the com-mittee and the presence of other examiners. tions will be cancelled and deferred if members of the ex-amining committee are not present at the scheduled time and place. Program information At least two weeks prior to the proposed date the following information must be received by the Faculty of Graduate Studies: 1.Thesis examining committee reports (both internal and
external) 2.Student’s examination program information (submitted in
a Word document): 1. Biographical data if desired (i.e. birthplace) 2. List of degrees obtained--institution and date 3. List of the candidate's awards, publications, and joint publications 4. An abstract of the thesis (not more than 350 words)
Notes: 1. It is the responsibility of the Department to reserve the room for the oral examination and notify FGS of the date, time and location. 2. The examination must be held at either the University of Manitoba Fort Garry or Bannatyne campus, or the St. Boni-face Research Centre.
