• BUT-Individual departments have discretionary

funds to lure students to their programs.

– Your views and opinions. But back

them up!

– Your values-what’s important to you?

– What have you learned in life and

how you have applied those lessons?

General Advice:

• Follow Instructions! Keep to the length.

• Do not use a generic essay. Each essay

must fit the prompt.

• If you have a choice, choose an essay in

your comfort area.

Mechanics and Style:

• All the conventions of good writing

apply. Use accepted grammar,

punctuation and spelling. They

count!

• Shorter, interesting paragraphs are

easier and more pleasant to read

than long essays with no or very long

paragraphs.

Content:

• Clincher sentence must get

attention and give readers

insight into the you not evident

in your application.

• Provide detail or a narrative that

shows the real you!

The Process:

• Start well in advance.

• Create a support team of people

who know you. Include parents and

teachers. Let them read your work!

• A “Writing Buddy” is a great

resource to bounce ideas off of and

provide support.

• Stuck? Have a “Get It Done” party

with classmates.

Remember:

• Don’t plagiarize.

• Be original.

• Rewrite, rewrite, rewrite!

• Use natural style and voice. Tell YOUR story!
