NEW COUNCIL PROGRAM

Let's help our brother Knights who need a ride to Council meetings or an event by becoming an UBER KNIGHT! Some of our brothers may not be able to drive at night due to eyesight or age related issues. Maybe a younger Knight doesn't have a car available because his wife has commitments or the teenagers have a "must do activity, Dad!" Maybe a brother turned his ankle playing basketball and can't operate a brake pedal. So how about it? Would you be willing to pick up a brother Knight who lives in your neighborhood if you were going to a meeting. No obligation to do this for every meeting. Just when you are going to attend anyway. As the nights descend earlier and Winter's icy streets are just around the corner, let's get our Uber Knight program in place and help out our brother Knights! Sign up at the Council meeting or contact the Grand Knight to sign up. Thanks to all Uber Knights who have done so already!

REMINDER-Change of location for August meeting

Our Council meeting on Monday, August 10th will be held on the second floor of Riverside Pizza at the northeast corner of Main Street (Route 64) and Riverside (across from City Hall and the Arcada theater. Salad, pizza, and soft drinks will be provided by the Council starting at 6:30 pm so we can start our business meeting sharply at 7:00pm. There will be a jar for free will donations if you are so inclined. Stay and join us for fellowship after the meeting if you can. May God bless you and your families always.

Chaplain’s Report by Fr. Joe Lutz

Food For The Journey of Faith Message for 8/9/15 - 19th Sunday in OT (B) Dear friends in Christ, "Taste and see the goodness of the Lord." The Responsorial Psalm 34 sums up the theme for today's liturgy. Christ is, indeed, our food for the journey of faith, and has been since the beginning of time. He certainly provided well for Adam and Eve with the Garden of Eden, and in today's first reading (1 Kgs 19:4-8) provided Elijah sustenance of a hearth cake and a jug of water when Elijah was despondent and ready to die. The angel of the Lord told him to get up and eat for he needed strength to continue his journey to Horeb, the mountain of God. And this sustenance enabled him to travel forty days and forty nights to his destination. We, too, need to get up and eat this God given food so that we will have the strength to continue our journey to his holy mountain. We will then be able to fight the starvation inflicted upon us by our sins. This life-giving heavenly food is the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. "Taste and see the goodness of the Lord."

Paul's letter to the Ephesians (Eph 4:30-5:2) emphasizes that love (Jesus Christ) is also heavenly food that strengthens us for our journey of faith: "Be imitators of God as his dear children. Follow the way of love, even as Christ loved you. He gave himself for us as an offering to God, a gift of pleasing fragrance." Indeed, taste and see the goodness of the Lord. Paul goes on to enlighten us as to what that love actually means. "Get rid of all bitterness, all passion and anger, harsh words, slander, and malice of every kind. In place of these, be kind to one another, compassionate, and mutually forgiving, just as God has forgiven you in Christ." As you can see, we really have a long way to go on our journey of faith, and will need much sustenance to feed us on our journey. In today's gospel (Jn 6:41-51) when the Jews started to murmur in protest because Jesus claimed, "I am the bread that came down from heaven. They kept saying: Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not know his father and his mother? How can he claim to have come down from heaven?" Sounds familiar, doesn't it. Familiarity breeds contempt, as the saying goes, and that certainly applies in this case. However, Jesus responds that he is the bread of life, the bread that comes down from heaven, for a man to eat and never die. This, of course, blows the unbeliever's mind. They think that Jesus is endorsing cannibalism. Our faith leads us to believe that Jesus certainly gave his flesh and blood for our salvation, that he gave us the Eucharist, the real presence of his body and blood, to sustain us on our journey of faith. If we believe that Jesus is the Truth, the Light of the world, the Son of God, then every word that he spoke is the truth. In his own words, Jesus, taking bread, breaking it, saying a blessing, said: "This is my body which will be given up for you." And taking the cup of wine, blessing it, said: "Take this, all of you, and drink of it; this is the chalice of my blood, which will be shed for you; do this in memory of me." Can there be any doubt that Jesus has given us the food for our journey of faith? Bon Voyage, my brothers and sisters in the faith. May the Lord constantly feed you with his body and his blood as you continue on your journey. It is only in this meal that we walk by faith and not by sight. As the saying goes, "We become what we eat." Consequently, we become more and more Christ-like and embody his presence to the world around us. May his presence within you enrich all those who encounter you on this journey of faith. Love and Prayers,

Fr. Joe

Golf Outing Update Brother Knights, Last month we held our 16th Annual Chuck Hollenbach "Never Give Up On Life" Memorial Golf Outing. The Lord truly blessed us with a wonderful day in more ways than one. The day started with Father Ryan Browning giving us a golfing short game clinic. It was quite insightful to see and hear the thought process of a true golf professional as they approach the green. After a challenging round on Elgin Country Club's beautifully manicured course, we heard a keynote address from Father Browning, where he described his profound journey from a professional life in financial services and golf to the priesthood. The goal of the evening was to not only hear about the great things that are going on at the Fox Valley Pregnancy Center, but also raise as much money as possible for their continued mission. To that end, we held many successful silent auctions, raffles and drawings. While the final amount we raised is still being tallied, needless to say we are going to be able to contribute a significant amount to them at their upcoming benefit banquet in September. Many thanks to my Brother Knights, the golf committee members, sponsors and volunteers. Without your dedication and support, this outing would not have been possible. Please go to our council's "Never Give Up On Life" Memorial Golf Outing Facebook page to see some of the photos from the day (along with a few in the photo album in this issue). https://www.facebook.com/pages/Knights-of-Columbus-Never-Give-Up-on-Life-Golf-Outing/273509392722384 Ron Newman

That Man Is You! (Message from Msgr. Steve Knox) I am excited to tell you about a men's faith program coming to St Patrick's that could have a profound impact on our families and our parish. That Man is You! is an interactive, multimedia men’s program focused upon the development of authentic male leadership. The program honestly addresses the pressures and temptations that men face in our modern culture, especially those relating to their roles as husbands and fathers. This weekly program will begin September 12th and run from 6:00am to 7:30am on Saturday mornings, allowing you to be back with your families in time for all your weekend activities. Studies show that when a father practices his faith, his children are much more likely to practice the faith throughout their lives - even more so than when their mother practices the faith. You will see more information about That Man is You! in the weekly bulletins and hear announcements during Masses in August. I invite all the men of St Patrick's to consider registering for That Man is You!, and I invite all the wives of the parish to pray for the success of this program and support your husbands in their desire to participate. We look forward to great fruits we know will come from That Man is You! at St. Patrick’s. In order to register, the link below will take you to the That Man Is You page on our parish website. http://www.stpatrickparish.org/news/registration-is-open-for-that-man-is-you-starting-saturday-september-12th/   God Bless, Msgr. Steve

Field Agent: The Value of Life Insurance for Children As a father, you worry about your children and do everything you can to protect them. You try to raise them right and make sure they are prepared to become adults. But have you ever thought about buying life insurance for your child?

When you insure a child, you are protecting his or her future. Did you know that one out of every six adults get rated, postponed, or denied for insurance coverage? If you purchase a policy for your child from the Knights of Columbus with a guaranteed purchase option, it guarantees that more insurance can be purchased for that child at certain set dates, without proving insurability.

Unfortunately, as fathers we don’t have a crystal ball, and we don’t know what the future may have in store for our children’s health. But did you know that right now you can purchase a child’s policy, in many cases, for less than $10 a month?

I’ve heard it said that people don’t want to “profit” from the death of a child, so they won’t purchase coverage on their children. God forbid something tragic happens, those funds can come in handy at a time when finances will be the last thing on a parent’s mind. I have never heard a story about someone who regretted buying coverage on their child.

Contact me today to discuss the many policy options for child plans, including 10- and 20-Pay life insurance. Gregory Paul, FIC (708) 601-5489 [email protected]

Reflections on Marriage and Family Life By Sir Knight David Stowell Introduction: In October 2015 the Synod of Bishops will come together to discuss Family Life in the world. While the Bishops will be looking at all issues facing family life throughout the world, we here in the United States are facing unique challenges to not only Family Life but to God as well. The hope of these upcoming articles is to reflect upon various issues regarding Marriage and Family Life. To begin we must remember that “In the beginning was the Word (John 1:1)”. Jesus is at the center of all we believe. Marriage in the 21st Century Today in 2015 a very profound educational challenge is in front of us. As Christians, and specifically Catholic Christians, we are bound by our love of Jesus. We can think of Jesus no different than “the way the truth and the light” (John 14:6) By saying this we approach various topics with a fundamental difference from many other people, primarily because our love of Christ is our way of life. We can open up any page of the Catechism or any paragraph from the basic sixteen documents of the Vatican II council and read it not with just educational fervor but with our hearts open to Jesus. And that is what we are meant to do. Love Jesus, love God “with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength” (Mark 12:30). Jesus brings this forward from the original Torah in Deuteronomy, chapter 6. It is that fundamental to our lives. This is what we must first learn before all else. There is no question that a new age of persecution against not just Christianity but God in general is occurring. And just like in our beloved Pope Francis’ new Encyclical Laudato Si we cannot just call upon other faithful Catholics, but we must call from all people of goodwill from throughout the world. Must we then compromise our faith? Absolutely not! We do just as Jesus did (He is the one we love). We love all others and proclaim our love of our Lord. When we proclaim our love no one will dissent. No evangelical will say he doesn’t love the Lord, No Lutheran will say he doesn’t love the Lord. We have some differences but when it comes to loving the Lord with all our soul, mind, and strength we share a common bond. While we have these common bonds we have hope for eventual unity. As we know our particular culture has gone down a very wrong path on many issues. However, this should not give us too much trouble as we have gone through this all before. The Roman Emperor Nero wasn’t too hot on this whole Christian thing, nor was Diocletian. 16 centuries later we find ourselves in a world of 20,000 Christian denominations while the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church remains together. So we face another challenge to the teachings of Christ and His Church. This will be survived by our prayers and our humble love of Jesus Christ. It is with this love, that we proclaim our message of Love and Dignity. We can in the future reflect upon our belief in love and marriage as God has revealed it to us. In September, the Meeting of Families is to be held in Philadelphia prior to the Synod of Bishops on Family Life. Our Beloved Pope Francis will be here in the United States to spread the love of Jesus wherever he goes. We must first bring that love into our hearts before we can bring other messages. Messages that are brought forward without being attached to the love of Jesus will be D.O.A. Love Jesus first and we can explore the beauty of marriage and family going forward.

Membership Report Happy New Fraternal Year! This brings happiness and remorse. We feel happiness because we ended the year by meeting all our expectations and await eagerly for Supreme to confirm that we met our Membership Quota for the past Fraternal Year. We feel remorse because we begin at 0...and begin again to keep the momentum rolling with new members that maintain our organization with renewed enthusiasm. Unfortunately, we have experienced deaths and transfers which will affect our Membership for this Fraternal Year. Attrition happens and we must be willing to compensate for this. In reading a recent letter from Father Joe Lutz, I was re-invigorated with the WHY we speak to gentlemen about becoming a Knight and why we as Knights need to participate in our events as much as we can. Fr. Joe cited Ephesians 4:17-24 (www.usccb.org/bible/ephesians/4), which tells us we must lay aside our former life and put on a new man created in God’s image. As a Knight, we have the opportunity to not live as a pagan. Why don't we allow other Catholic gentlemen to have this same privilege? The men we see have an urge to make more of their life just like you do. However, you have not inspired them to think about how they can make more of their life. Believe it or not, there is more to life than merely going to Sunday Mass and dropping off their children at CCD. Won't you be the voice that lets them know how they can unleash the good that is inside of them? A First Degree was held in August and we will have another one in October that will be followed up with a "Knight Before Christmas" in December. To reserve a seat at one of these ceremonies, the conversation needs to begin with the next gentleman you come in contact with. There are yellow cards at all three churches that provides a brief explanation of who the Knights are and what we do. Please take a moment to locate the card and hand one to the person. In the meantime, get his name and phone number written down so you can forward it to me. It's that easy. Let's get 'er done one more year. As Gary T says, "I'm always fishin'. Just waiting for that right moment to reel 'em in". Your faithful Director of Membership, Paul Braddock Director of Membership [email protected] 630-901-3164
