MARY PARKER of Coral-viUe, Iowa, who visited theHawaiian I s l a n d s recently,wrote her parents, Mr, and Mrs.WILLIS COMBS, as follows:

"The beaches are eitherblack or white—the white onesare few and far between asthese are formed from coralreefs; the black ones morenumerous as these are formedof lava. Most of the black beach-es are not good for swimming,at least not for the inexper-ienced as the bottom is veryrough and the currents swirlaround the deposits of lava.

"The black sand beach ofcourse is the exception. Herethe lava has been reduced tosand size and the beach Islovely. I brought back a lotof this sand as most of theyoungsters I know wanted alittle of this sand.

"The shelling is almost non-existent—at least on the beach-es I visited.

" T h e vegetation is v e r ylush. Anything and everythinggrows here. Because the I s -lands are so young geologicallymost of the plants have beenintroduced from nearly all overthe world. Much of the vegeta-tion reminds me of Sanibel—the palms, mango, papaya, cof-fee, crotons, pointsettias, hi-biscus, Australian pine.

"I like the beach at Sanibelmuch better than the one atWaikiki."

Mary was representing theIowa Geological Survey at Na-tional meetings of the AmericanGeological Society at San Fran-cisco, followed by a geologicalfield survey of the HawaiianIslands. She and her teenagedaughter, BARBARA, will beon Sanibel for the Christmasholidays.

REPEAT VISITORSREMINISCE

The people who "dig" thetrue charms of Sanibel-Captivausually are repeat visitors, andas soon as they become old-timers, they like to reminisce.

Mr. and Mrs. RalnerEsslenof New York City, who are backfor a ten-day stay at theWoosters' Beach View Cot-tages, recall how they camehere first by the "Rebel" ferryboat in 1960, soon after hurri-cane Donna.

But what left a more lastingimpression on Mr. Esslen thanthe windstorm damage was thethen only telephone on Sanibel, located in a booth close to theferry slip. Instead of intelligiblewords it transmitted whatsounded like garbled messagesfrom Mars, much to the dis-tress of Mr. Esslen's homeoffice, a large advertisingagency, which unsuccessfullytried to get across what it con-sidered to be an important pieceof news. To Mr. Esslen thisrepresented truly "getting awayfrom it all ."

Walking along the beach be-fore having settled, theEsslenscame upon a cottage which theyparticularly liked, A ten-yearold girl showed them round, and when the Esslens wanted torent it, she quoted terms andclosed the deal. It was LindaWooster, whose parents wereout, but who for a long timeproudly remembered her firstrental of one of the two onlycottages the Woosters had builtby that time. Dave Wooster wasthen the first and only TV pro-fessional ever to have settledon Sanibel-Captiva, and like anemergency doctor, he had todedicate much of his time tofollowing summons from allover the Islands to look at TVsets ailing from many years ofexposure to humidity and saltair.

Today, Mr. Esslen remarkswith a slight touch of nostal-gia, things at the Woosters, like everything else on the i s -land, have grown—the numberof rental units (now 16), thepalm trees, the children and theTV repair business.

The Esslens, like most new-comers, started out as amateurshell collectors, walking alongthe beach with the typical shel-ter's stoop. Mrs. Esslen wasmuch encouraged when shefound a yellow pecten during thefirst few days. With some con-fidential advice from MaryCunningham, the Esslens be-came expert conchologists inthe course of their third visitto the islands, even digging forlive angel wings in the rightplaces.

When Mrs. Francis Baileyat the Red Pelican started rent-ing canoes, t h e i r interestswidened. Paddling a boat on thesloughs and bayous of the I s -lands, the Esslens have becomebird and alligator watchers.Their prize sight, Mrs. Esslensays, were two frigate b i rds—their red throat patches in fullcolor—perched among a con-gregation of pelicans on one ofthe Wulfert Keys. Mrs. Esslen, who lived in Kenya for twoyears, says the mangroves andmudbanks remind her of Africa.Mr. Esslen feels transportedback to the canals of Thailand,a country where he "had sownsome wild oats in his youth,"he says.

Canoeing has even maderookie fishermen of the Ess -lens, who love to eat freshfish, but who, until this year, were convinced that thecheapest way of getting a good

What brings the Esslensback to Sanibel year after year?"It's the simplicity of life,"says Mrs. Esslen. "You arecloser to nature than you canbe almost anywhere else in theUnited States. You step out ofyour cottage, and nothingseparates you from the sea,the sand, the shells—no bill-boards, no boardwalks, thebirds are still more numerousthan the people. Many places youcan only reach by non-motorized boat still look likethe seventh day of the Creation. And, of course, the Woosters. Not just because their cabinsare so neat and nicely done thatthey feel like home; but youcan't come back repeatedlywithout becoming friends withDave and Marge."

Like all repeat visitors, theEsslens are boosters of the Is-lands. Last Monday, theirfriends, Mr. and Mrs. Chris-topher Ledermann, arrived atthe Woosters for their firstvisit. Mr. Ledermann, the di-rector of the German-AmericanChamber of Commerce in NewYork, is an ardent fisherman.
