Who did you vote

for and why?

Wolf. “Corbett has done an awful job as far as schools. ... I would be willing to pay more taxes if it was going to schools.” Myra Adams

Wolf. “With natural gas, Corbett seems to not really know what he’s doing. He’s not imposing any excise tax.” Doug Goetz

Corbett. “It’s beyond an uphill battle. ... I don’t want a politician as governor.” Steve Nasevich, Republican 14th Ward leader

Corbett fi rst incumbent gov to lose re-election

Tom Wolf’s campaign Twitter page tweeted this photo out of Wolf and his family shortly after the polls closed. / TWITTER

A Tom was elected Gov-ernor of Pennsylvania on Tuesday.

But he didn’t have the last name Corbett.

Tom Wolf became the first candidate in modern state election history to defeat an incumbent in the race for the state’s highest office. Wolf, a Democrat from York, defeated Cor-bett in a landslide, accord-ing to unofficial election results.

In a letter emailed out to his supporters, Wolf wrote that “As your gover-nor, I’ll be there working with you, and I can’t wait to see what we do together to help give Pennsylvania a fresh start.”

Regarding his oppo-nent: “Governor Tom

Pennsylvania. Tom Wolf was elected as the 47th Governor of Pennsylvania on Tuesday night.

As of press time, Wolf had about 64 percent of the vote, unofficial results show. Corbett, who twice served as the state’s attor-ney general, had roughly 35 percent of the votes, with 19 statewide districts reporting.

For Wolf, a business-man and former teacher, this was his first run at a public office. He will be sworn in as the 47th gover-nor of the state in January 2015.

Corbett, Lt. Governor Jim Cawley, and their many supporters deserve our respect and admiration for running a campaign focused on the issues,” he wrote.

Other PA races

There weren’t many

surprises in other local

elections:

• Democratic US Rep. Bob Brady, longtime chairman of the Philadelphia Democratic Party, won re-election in the 1st Congressional district.

• Democratic US Rep. Chaka Fattah, who is currently under a federal corruption investigation, won re-election in the 2nd Congressional District.

• Democratic State Rep. Brendan Boyle won out in 13th Congressional District and graduated to the US House of Representatives. Boyle replaces Allison Schwartz, who withdrew her seat to run for governor, but lost to Wolf in the primary.

Massive support for Wolf at polls Voters at the polls Tues-day were overwhelmingly in support of Democratic candidate Tom Wolf, with almost nothing positive to say about incumbent Gov. Tom Corbett.

“We are done with Tom Corbett,” said Rod Clay, getting ready to vote in Brewerytown. “Every time you turn around, he’s shutting down a pro-gram, a service, a school.”

Most voters named schools as the most im-portant political issue.

“I thought Corbett wasn’t doing his job. When our schools are disrupted the way they are, you need to get him

out of office,” said Shirley Easter.

“I’m sick of the things the Republicans have done,” said Margot Rob-inson. “A lot of that is on us. You’ve got to go out and vote.”

But others questioned whether Wolf will change anything in Harrisburg.

“I hope he gets in office, but once he’s in office, are we seeing a difference? Or is it gonna be the same old thing with a different face?” asked Michael Artist. “I won’t stop voting ... but I question how much the public really influences the vote.” SAM NEWHOUSE

Election Day

One public school teacher

voted for Wolf “to protect

her job.” A woman on

public assistance said she

voted for Wolf “to get a

job.”

• “I have a lot of issues with how Corbett is running the state —just a lot of the things he stands for,” said Corinda Cook, in Brewerytown.

The search for the 22-year-old woman who was ab-ducted in Germantown on Sunday night has stretched into Maryland.

Police said Tuesday that Carlesha Freeland-Gaither’s ATM card was used at a bank in Aber-deen, Maryland, at 6:01 a.m. Tuesday, but they couldn’t say if she was with the abductor.

According to NBC10, the person who withdrew funds from her account resembled the description of Freeland-Gaither’s ab-ductor, who can be seen on surveillance video vio-lently forcing the nurse’s aid into a running, metal-lic gray Ford Taurus just before 10 p.m. Sunday only blocks from her Northwest Philadelphia home.

Freeland-Gaither ’s family spoke out Tuesday in a public plea for her abductor to return their

woman’s mother, tear-fully pleaded to the news media: “Just give her back,” she said. “Please.”

Freeland-Gaither, who lives on West Hansberry Street, does have history in the Old Line State. She attended high school in Maryland and for sev-eral years lived with her grandmother, according to the news outlet.

She returned to Phila-delphia in 2012 and has worked since with cancer patients at Penn Presbyte-rian Hospital in University City, according to NBC10.

The FBI has partnered with local authorities on the search and has also donated money to help the cause. A combined $42,000 reward is on the table for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of her abduc-tor.

Police described the at-tacker as a 5-foot-10-inch tall man with a medium build.

GOP strikes early blow in elections

Republicans struck a pow-erful first blow in Kentucky in congressional elections on Tuesday in their drive to control the U.S. Senate and dramatically tip the bal-ance of power away from President Barack Obama and his Democrats.

Obama’s low job ap-proval rating, partisan grid-lock in Washington and an economy that is not grow-ing broadly enough to help many in the middle class were major issues confront-ing voters in elections for 36 senators, 36 state gover-nors and all 435 members of the House of Representa-tives.

Obama. The White House tried to play down the prospect of sharp changes in strategy after the election.

At press time, Reuters/Ipsos projected Senate Minority Leader Mitch Mc-Connell won his re-election battle, defeating Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes in a race that had been extremely close until Mc-Connell pulled away in the polls in recent days.

If Republicans went on to win the Senate on Tues-day, McConnell would re-place Democrat Harry Reid as Senate majority leader, putting him in a powerful position on Capitol Hill.

Republicans also gained

their first seat from Demo-crats when Shelley Moore Capito easily defeated Natalie Tennant to win a Senate seat in West Vir-ginia left open by retiring Democratic Senator Jay Rockefeller.

Republicans were ex-pected to pick up seats in the Senate, but polls ahead of the voting showed eight to 10 races were still toss-ups as of press time.

They needed to gain six seats to control the chamber for the first time since 2006.REUTERS

A Vatican bioethics official on Tuesday condemned the death by assisted sui-cide of Brittany Maynard, a terminally ill 29-year-old who ended her life over the weekend, as an undig-nified “absurdity.”

“This woman (took her own life) thinking she would die with dignity, but this is the error,” Monsi-gnor Ignacio Carrasco de Paula, head of the Pontifi-cal Academy for Life, told the Italian news agency Ansa.

Maynard, who was di-

agnosed in January with a brain tumor and had announced plans to take medication to die when her pain became unbear-able, had become the face of the right-to-die move-ment ahead of her death.

The group Compassion & Choices, an Oregon-based nonprofit that assist-ed Maynard through her end of life, said on Sunday that she had passed away surrounded by loved ones. REUTERS

With estimated earn-ings of $115 million, more than double what she pulled in last year, Be-yonce is the highest paid woman in music in 2014, Forbes magazine said on Tuesday.

The huge sum, most of which came from her world tour, propelled Beyonce, 33, from fourth place last year and put her firmly ahead of pop star Taylor Swift, 24, with $64 million, who jumped up one spot from last year to No. 2.

Pop singer Pink, 35, climbed up from No. 8 in 2013 to third with $52 million.

The R&B singer’s self-titled album released last December and endorse-ment deals pushed her earnings up further assur-ing her the top spot.

Barbados-born Rihan-na, 26, with $48 million and Katy Perry, 30, who earned an esti-mated $40 million, rounded out the top five on the annual list.

Madonna, 56, who ranked No. 1 last year, failed to make the top 10 in 2014. Lady Gaga, 28, slumped from No. 2 in 2013 to ninth place

this year with estimated earnings of $33 million.

Forbes compiled the list after estimating pre-tax income calculated for the 12 months from June 2013 to 2014 based on record sales, concert tick-ets, touring information merchandise sales and interviews with concert promoters, lawyers and managers.

It also looked at data from the Pollstar, the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) and tracking firm Nielsen SoundScan. REUTERS

Jolie ‘open’ to pursuing life in politics

Academy Award-winning actress Angelina Jolie is “open” to pursuing a life in politics, diplomacy or public service, she told Vanity Fair magazine.

Jolie, who won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in “Girl,

Interrupted,” has already turned her hand to direct-ing. Her latest fi lm behind the camera, “Unbroken,” about Olympic runner, World War II airman and prisoner of war Louis Zamperini, is set to open on Dec. 25.

The wife of actor Brad Pitt and a special envoy to the U.N. High Com-missioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said that her

work as a humanitarian has made her conscious of the fact that politics have to be considered as an option.

“Because if you really want to make an ex-treme change, then you have a responsibil-ity,” she told the magazine in an excerpt from an in-

terview published online on Tuesday.

“But I honestly don’t know in what role I would

be more useful — I am conscious of what I do

for a living, and that (could) make it less possible.”Asked if she sees

herself in politics, diplo-macy or public service,

she replied, “I am open.” REUTERS

Prosecutors appeal Pistorius verdict and sentence The South African prosecution authority confi rmed on Tuesday it would fi le an appeal against the culpable homicide verdict and fi ve-year jail sentence handed down to para-lympian Oscar Pistorius last month.

Pistorius was absolved of the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at the end of the trial after the state failed to convince judge Thokozile Masipa of Pistorius’ intent to kill, leading to a conviction for negligent killing and a fi ve-year jail term.

“Today, we announce that the NPA will fi le the application for leave to appeal both the convic-tion and sentence,” the National Prosecuting Authority said in a state-ment on Tuesday. REUTERS

As Ebola persists in West Africa, shipping lines and traders are tweaking their contracts to protect them-selves if the disease puts crews at risk of infection or prevents vessels calling at affected ports.

Ebola has not yet forced ports to close, but uncertainties about the spread of the virus are add-ing to legal and financial concerns for those involved in shipping oil, cocoa and minerals from the region.

Iron ore miners have al-ready been hit by logistics problems exacerbated by the Ebola outbreak.

“Ebola clauses have now become a very com-mon phenomenon,” said

a senior freight manager with a leading commodi-ties trader.

Shipping lines active in West Africa, such as oil tanker firm Stena Weco, have written clauses into their contracts requiring charterers to nominate alternative safe discharge ports if Ebola means they cannot call at the intended port, according to a contract seen by Reuters. REUTERS

Rihanna goes for shock value with shockingly brief answers for Elle

Rihanna graces the cover of Elle magazine for the fourth time for its Decem-ber issue. She sat down with the magazine for a Q&A session full of evi-dence that Rihanna truly is the Ernest Hemingway of pop stars, using two words where someone like Miley Cyrus would probably use 12. But even with such brevity, her answers are illuminating — terrified of childbirth, loves Michael Bolton’s “Greatest Hits.” Here are some of her more memorable sound bites.

The answer we don’t really believe:Elle: What do people mis-

Sometimes a fan loves Ariana Grande so much that she has to call the cops on him. At least that was what happened when Tim Normandin, a 29-year-old man from Lowell, Massachusetts, didn’t heed her record company’s re-quest that he stop sending Grande outlandish gifts, according to TMZ. Among the tokens of his affection? Eight Yankee Candle Com-pany candles, calendars featuring puppies and kittens, a three-piece mir-ror set from Kmart, a $200 anklet from Kay Jewelers, a rock he picked up in New Hampshire’s White Mountains and, best of all, a 42.5-pound pumpkin, which is apparently not the way to a pop star’s heart after all. The new ‘Hot Mug Shot Guy’

There’s a new “Hot Mug Shot Guy” sweeping the Internet. Sean Kory was arrested at a Halloween pa-rade in Santa Cruz, Califor-nia, for assaulting a man dressed up as a Fox News reporter. Kory reportedly yelled, “I hate Fox News,” grabbed the man’s prop mic and rubbed it in his crotch then began pum-melling the victim with a tennis racket, though police reports indicate the man was not injured. Even though we’re featuring this item in the paper, don’t confuse this as your calling to dethrone Kory.

‘Interstellar’ needs to be seen on fi lm Movies. You really have to view this space-age fi lm the old-fashioned way.

Wednesday marks a mile-stone: A film is being re-leased on film. “Interstel-lar” hits theaters today — just not even close to all of them. That may seem odd, given that it’s one of the most highly anticipat-ed movies of the year: the latest from brainy block-buster-maker Christopher Nolan, with Oscar winners Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway.

Yet the only theaters getting it are the ones that never threw out their film projectors. Starting today, you can see “Interstellar” in good old-fashioned, grainy and dangerously combustible 35mm as well as supersize 70mm IMAX.

The rest of the country’s multiplexes — the ones that converted entirely to digital, which is nearly all of them — don’t get it until Friday.

This bold move is a strong push-back against the digital wave that has almost entirely consumed modern movie watching. In 2010, most theaters switched — at great cost — to DCP (Digital Cinema Package), a purely com-puterized system. Instead of bulky, expensive-to-ship film reels, movies were mere files with a password to unlock. Unlike film, they would never scratch, rot or burn up. All a projectionist

had to do was hit a button. But the files could get

corrupted or deleted. And while it’s nice to have sparklingly clean images, they can be too bright. As Quentin Tarantino — like Nolan, another celluloid zealot — once put it, digital projection is like “watch-ing television in public.”

“Interstellar” indeed looks great on 70mm. The film is about McConaughey and Hathaway searching through the cosmos for a planet to replace the dying Earth, and its early scenes on Earth are sometimes impossibly dark.

But once it gets to space, you can not only see the majesty, but feel it. None of it looks digital, not even the planets our heroes visit.

Nolan shot one of them in Iceland, and it really does resemble an alien land. Beyond that, it even looks real. It looks like film.

By the numbers

249There are 249 remaining theaters in the nation that can show 35mm and 70mm fi lm.

What did you think of Daniel as Ig?I think he’s amazing. I just think he’s great. … What he actually brought to the screen was wildly beyond my deepest hopes. I think that he is what is most exciting about the film, by far. The whole thing is anchored by his emotional

Christopher Nolan isn’t the only one still holding the torch for celluloid. Quentin Tarantino will be releasing 70mm prints of his next fi lm, “The Hateful Eight.” Two years ago Paul Thomas Anderson’s “The Master” was shipped out in 70mm prints, and his new “In-

grabs his career by the ‘Horns’ commitment.

What were you interested in seeing adapted well?I wanted to see the breakup. I wanted to see both the sweetness that comes with a young first love … and also the emotional wreckage that a person feels when it all comes apart. We have lots of pyrotechnics … but I think that the great special effect in the film is the breakup scene.

Did you like the horns?I got to wear them! I was on set for a few days and the special effects crew was trying their third stage horns and they needed someone to put them on, so they sat me down in the makeup chair and put them on. They’re the kind of accessory that look good with anything. You can have a T-shirt and jeans, but you can also dress up in a suit and look good. LISA WEIDENFELD

Bonus question

Did you end up asking your dad what he thought of the movie?I loved what I was see-ing, but I wasn’t sure how well it worked and I sent a copy to my dad and he looked at it and he said, “This is great; this is a lot of fun.” And again, I kind of felt like, OK, we didn’t screw up.

“All of the products you bring into your home have a direct impact on the function of your body and your vitality and vibrancy,” says O’Leary. “Even the

cleaning products you’re using have a direct impact on your health.” Because of this, she suggests going for organic and natural cleaners.

Tip

Choose paint

carefully Wall color could

impact your mood.

“Red increases our

energy level and

it and makes you

hungry,” O’Leary

explains. “So if you

are trying to lose

weight, it’s the

worst color to paint

your kitchen.” Find

the tones that work

for you, she

recommends.

Forget PowerBars — did you know that you get energy from your home? Christa O’Leary, author of “Home in Harmony: Designing an Inspired Life,” utilizes her background in psychology and interior design

to transform your over-cluttered digs into a sanctuary.

MOLLY CONGDON

Stress-free living Turn off your autopilot Are you guilty of not making your bed? If run-ning out of the house with sheets scattered is something you’ve become accustomed to, it’s time to make a con-scious change. “People don’t realize this, but 80 percent of our daily actions are done out of habit,” O’Leary says. “Being aware of this is key. In order to see some changes you have to replace [bad habits] with benefi cial ones, which will inspire better living.”

Clear clutter

When you walk through the door after a long day, do you feel relief or do you feel stressed because you have yet to go through the magazines that are scattered across the fl oor? “The fi rst thing to do within your

home is to take care of the clutter, because it weighs on our un-conscious mind,” says O’Leary. “Go through those cluttered spaces and start there. You want your home to nurture you, not drain your energy.”

Addicted to your phone? There’s an app for that

Gadget addicts know this too well: No amount of willpower will ever get our prying eyes and hyperac-tive thumbs away from our smartphone screens. So how about an app that will break the cycle for us?

Offtime blocks certain phone features such as email, texts or so-cial media for set periods of time. But it doesn’t block everything or pick random apps to lock down.

“It shows which activities and apps are used often and

Focus . Off time gets to know what you do on your phone, then shuts it down (for a while).

Remember paying attention to the people you’re actually with? Do that! / GETTY IMAGES

with which con-tacts you inter-act the most,” says Michael Dettbarn, co-founder of the Berlin-based developer.

“Consider-ing we can’t imagine our everyday lives without our

mobile devices anymore, the question is not IF we should use our smartphone but rather HOW.”

Besides the obnoxious habit of paying as much, if not more, attention to our phones even when there is a real friend or colleague sitting across from us, Dett-barn says devices are reor-ganizing our priorities — and we don’t even know it.

“The way we’re using apps and communication on our phones today is not obvious, and it’s caus-ing emotional and psycho-logical pressure on a sub-conscious level,” he says. “We’re losing more and more focus and can’t differ-entiate between the bits of information and the kinds of functionality that really matter to us.”

You can still choose peo-ple whose messages will be allowed through, but the idea is to refocus your attention on tasks at hand. Intuitive analytics track your app usage, showing you what you’re doing, when you’re doing it and how long you’re doing it.

Offtime is free, though currently only available for Android devices. Visit www.offtime.co.

Pedestrians aggravated by cyclistsRe: ‘Oppression against cyclists is great travesty of our age’ (Metro, Nov. 4) Lawless cyclists should be targeted by police over pedestrians because bicycles are vehicles that regularly travel over the speed limit set by the city. “Lawless” pedestri-ans don’t do the same. Jaywalking pedestrians are not going to crush another human being the way cyclists so often do.AMY BALDWIN, VIA EMAIL

It’s bad enough that I have to get cut off almost daily by cyclists (while in a crosswalk no less), but now I have to read about their “oppression” in Metro. Get a grip, Jack — cyclists are going 10 to

15 miles an hour, while pedestrians are going about 2 to 3 mph. We’re just trying to get to work without getting hit by a car or bike. I don’t have an issue outside of the city, but while trying to commute, cyclists are just a nuisance!M. DISCOLO, VIA EMAIL

Pedestrians are usually not bad or lawless but are too often distracted by electronic devices. If someone is walking and talking using an earphone while eating something and slurping a beverage, how can they be expected to pay attention to traffi c?GEORGE CHRISTIAN JR., VIA EMAIL

It’s pretty rare in the NFL for a team to start the same quarterback for all 16 games.

Even the Eagles, who have had a relative level of stability at the posi-tion since the Donovan McNabb era began, will have had 11 different starters since 1999 when Mark Sanchez suits up in Week 10.

The team hasn’t had a full 16-game season from

a quarterback since 2008 (when the Eagles fell to the Cardinals in the NFC title game).

So Sanchez’s ascension to the starting gig certainly comes as no surprise. It is much more likely for a team to require some help from the quarterback posi-tion than not.

“I feel great about Mark,” Chip Kelly said. “We felt great about him all along. One of the things we wanted to do -— I always said we need-ed two quarterbacks and had a chance to get him in here. I thought he’s done a great job in our system. I thought he played out-standing in the preseason and showed no rust or

anything when he got in there against Houston [on Sunday].”

Since McNabb’s trade to the Redskins six years ago, the Birds have had Kevin Kolb, (seven starts), Vince Young (three), Mi-chael Vick (34) and Nick Foles (16) under center.

And it seems not to have hurt the team much.

The Birds won a playoff game with Jeff Garcia call-ing the shots in 2006, and have reached the playoffs under Vick’s and Foles’ leadership.

The Sanchez-led Eagles making a playoff run would not be an unusual phenomenon. The one-time Jets bona fide QB-1 took the Jets to two AFC

title games, and he’s been ready to go since Day 1.

“His preparation, I think, is just outstanding in terms of what he does here,” Kelly said. “And he prepared himself like he’s the starter.”

Sanchez the latest backup to take overNFL. Mark Sanchez wouldn’t be the fi rst Eagles backup to lead the team to the playoff s.

The Phillies could make a complete overhaul to their roster this offseason.

Rumors have already begun to swirl about sever-al players being traded or released and many sources claim that every Phillie is on the table.

Rumored to be the first to move is, surprisingly, outfielder Marlon Byrd.

Byrd had a very solid season in right field for the Phillies, combining power and solid defensive play. His biggest knock is his strikeout total, among the worst in baseball. But FoxSports’ Ken Rosenthal said Monday night he is a popular target.

Another subject of dis-cussion on the Internet, and supposedly in front of-fices is the future or Ryan Howard.

The former MVP could very well be on his way out. Here’s what ESPN’s Buster Olney said Tuesday:

“Ryan Howard has had his last at-bat as a member of the Philadelphia Phil-lies. That’s what the Phil-lies hope, anyway. That’s their goal, according to

rival executives.”Olney goes on to ex-

plain that the Howard situ-ation isn’t as cut and dry as the Phillies would like.

The 34-year-old (who turns 35 this month) is due $60 million, salaries for the next two seasons plus a $10 million buyout in 2017 (on a team option worth $23 million).

How they could move Howard without eating most of his salary is still the big question.

Don’t be surprised if those two names are thrown around as the Winter Meetings approach on Dec. 7.

MLB. The Phillies are expected to be very busy with roster moves this winter.

guys they should target.

• Justin Masterson: He’s about to turn 30 and is due to bounce back from a down year.

• Gavin Floyd: He was a Phillie once, but that never stopped Ruben Amaro before. In nine 2014 starts his ERA was 2.65 in Atlanta.

Bye bye Burnett

Burnett turns down $12.75 million from PhilliesWith an opportunity to make a pretty hefty salary — especially considering he’s 37 years old — A.J. Burnett scorned the pros-pect of being a part of the worst team in the NL East for the 2015 season.

Burnett becomes a free agent and likely won’t pitch unless he can get a deal with a contender.

Burnett was 8-18 last season with a 4.59 ERA. He led all of baseball in earned runs, walks and losses.

Prior to signing his one-year, $16 million deal (with a player option for season No. 2), Burnett

had a late-career resur-gence in Pittsburgh.

His stellar pitching in 2012 and 2013 for the Pirates made him appear like a perfect fi t for the Phillies as a No. 3 or 4 starter, but his departure was expected leading up to Tuesday.

The Phillies now have a little more wiggle room with their payroll.METROA.J. Burnett / GETTY IMAGES

No. 5

Lions (6-2)Ask an average sports fan on the street what the Lions record is right now and nine times out of 10 you’ll get “4-4.” They’ve played just one stinker this season (loss to Carolina).

No. 1

Patriots (7-2)

No team in the NFL was beating that Patriots team that played late Sunday afternoon at Gillette Stadium. Dar-relle Revis and Brandon Browner give the Pats, arguably, the best pass defense in the pass-hap-py NFL and Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski are the most dangerous quarterback-tight end combo in the league since 2011’s Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski.

NFL power rankings | by Matt Burke

No. 2

Cardinals (7-1)One reason why they’re behind the Pats: Their lone loss this season came to the Broncos, the team the Pats blew out on Sunday.

No. 3

Broncos (6-2)The best part of every sea-son for Peyton Manning since the turn of the cen-tury has been the game after he had to deal with a Bill Belichick defense.

No. 4

Eagles (6-2)Losing your starting quar-terback in the fi rst quarter and winning a road game against a quality foe falls into the category of “deal-ing well with adversity.”

No. 6

Seahawks (5-3)The Seahawks were on the verge of blowing out the winless Raiders on Sunday, leading 24-3 at the half. They wound up winning the game by six points.

No. 9

Packers (5-3)Heading into the season, people were speculating that running back Eddie Lacy could very well lead the league in fantasy points. He has just one 100-plus yard rushing day.

No. 7

Colts (6-3)We now know that the Steelers are at least a solid football team, so the Colts’ blowout loss to them in Week 8 wasn’t as bad as it seemed.

No. 8

Steelers (6-3)Before we go nuts with the Steelers love, let’s remember that their three-game win streak is due in part to the fact that they were all at home.

No. 10

Cowboys (6-3)Jerry Jones wants Tony Romo to play in London so badly Sunday against the Jaguars that he “jokingly” off ered up his wife’s fi rst-class seat on the plane.

No. 13

Bills (5-3)Only the Patriots have scored over 23 points against the Bills this season. Coming off a bye, they can get an early lead in the AFC wild card race with a win against K.C.

No. 11

Chiefs (5-3)Alex Smith’s line in the Chiefs’ 24-10 victory over the Jets on Sunday was perfectly Alex Smith: 21-of-31 for 199 yards, two TDs and no interceptions.

No. 12

Dolphins (5-3)They put 37 points on the board against San Diego last Sunday. The off ense is improving. The defense has been tremendous all year.

No. 14

Chargers (5-4)Wow, was that shutout by the Dolphins alarming. The Chargers are doing the opposite of their old hallmark — peaking too soon instead of too late.

Billy Cunningham was the last 76ers coach to ride on a float down Broad Street.

Do the math.It was way back in 1983.Cunningham attended

the Sixers’ home-opener Saturday night, which turned out to be a 114-96 loss to the Miami Heat. The Sixers are a long way from the glory days of ’83.

Following a 19-63 sea-son, the Sixers are off to an 0-4 start while featur-ing the youngest roster in

the entire league. So there will be plenty more grow-ing pains throughout this 2014-15 season.

Cunningham doesn’t enjoy watching his former team lose so often.

“Hopefully, the two big kids [Nerlens Noel and Joel Embiid] will be healthy through their careers, and they won’t have chronic injuries where they are out an extended period of time,” Cunningham said.

In the meantime, the Sixers are busy acquir-ing assets and building through the draft. But it may be a while before they’re back competing in the playoffs.

The 1982-83 team coached by Cunningham was star-driven with Ju-

lius Erving, Moses Malone, Maurice Cheeks, Andrew Toney and Bobby Jones.

Cunningham also has experience building a team from the very beginning as he did with the Heat as a minority owner.

In their first season, the Heat won only 15 games.

“First of all you have to find a star, like a Julius Erv-ing or Moses Malone,” Cun-ningham said about put-ting a team together. “Then

you have to find people that complement them, so this is a long process. It is not going to be just the draft. It will be with free agents and maybe some trades. It is not easy.”

No matter what hap-pens, Cunningham will always be tied to the Sixers.

“I have been working with Scott O’Neil and Tim McDermott with regards to the Wilt Chamberlain Foundation,” Cunningham said. “Hopefully the 76ers will be taking over the Wilt Chamberlain Foundation and growing it into some-thing bigger and better than it is today.”

NBA. Sixers coaching legend Billy Cunningham sees the light at the end of the tunnel.
