ALTRUSA INTERNATIONAL OF DALLAS, TEXAS, INC.

    DISTRICT NINE October 2014

On October 26thwe will observe Make a DifferenceDay, a day where millions of volunteers across thenation will unite with a common mission to im-prove the lives of others. As Altrusans, we happilyparticipate in the wonderful day of service. This yearwe will be assembling Halloween Safety Bags forthe children at the Dallas Childrens

Advocacy Center (DCAC), to hopeful-ly make that child friendly holiday a

    little happier and safer.

As Altrusans, we also know everyday is an opportunity to make a dif-ference. We make a difference in so

many ways and some are less obvi-ous than others. We plan our pro-jects at the beginning of each yearand we know, before we even start,we will make a difference with that

    work.

There are many other subtle ways we make a differ-ence and sometimes its a good idea to reflect on

those for a moment. As Altrusans and builder of

women we make a difference in the lives of one

another. We help each other grow as leaders, as

public speakers, and as community servants. Each

time one of us congratulates another on a job welldone she has made a difference in the life of thatAltrusan. When one of us helps teach another to dosomething she hasnt done before, we have made a

    difference.

I have had the opportunity to see some of the wayswe make a difference in the last few weeks. As oursister Altrusan Meg has recovered from her hip re-placement surgeries I have seen many of you, indifferent ways, support her recovery. Whether it is acard, a visit, a meal or a phone call, it had made a

difference to Meg.When we recruit new members we also make a dif-ference. We introduce individuals to Altrusa and

bring to them the joy of giving, thestrength of sisterhood, and growthopportunities they might not havehad otherwise. Additionally, thisClub year, I have also witnessedmembers of various committeesworking to help other committees. This sharing of the workload and

spirit of cooperation makes a dif-ference in the work we do, but alsomakes a difference in the overall

    health of our Club.

Congratulations to you. As Al-trusans you know that every day is make a differ-ence day. You have chosen to serve your communi-ty and world year round. There are so many ways wemake a difference and on October 26ththe rest of

    the nation will join us.

    COMMITTEE

    NEWSCommunications

The Communication Committee will lead thecelebration for our club's 86th birthday. Please

join us to test your knowledge of our history

and to learn some fun facts about our club. We

hope this review of our interesting past will en-

courage you to be an active part of our service

    rich future.

    Service

Frances, Jan, Karen and Phyllis had a very en-

joyable lunch with Sue Hesseltine of Our

Friends Place. Sue informed us of changes at

Our Friends Place, since last we had contact

with them. Most notable was the closing of the

Group Home (for girls 13 18 years of age)

due to changes made by the state and the fu-

ture opening of another Transitional Living Cen-

ter (TLC) for young women 18 24 years of

age. Our plans for this year was to make bas-

kets for the TLC and possibly do a few visits for

their life skill training. Sue liked the idea of the

personal care items and make-up, but suggest-

ed shower caddies instead of baskets, since

that is what they give all new respondents. She

will be providing a list of items; but in the

meantime we will be looking for donations from

club members for items like toothpaste, tooth-

brush, shampoo and conditioners (all full size

please). Once we get the list from Sue we will

send it to all. We plan to do this at the Novem-

ber 18 meeting and we have invited Sue to join

us. Their life skill training has changed somefrom when we used to go and now includes a

cooking class. Since Deborah is one of the

best cooks in our club, we all heard her volun-

teer to do this (dont worry Deborah it will be

after you are totally healed). We are also think-

ing of two visits with possible training by

Frances on fashion and jewelry making by

Lori. All this is just in the thinking stages and

    national when invited.

Phyllis will be taking care of the Foundation

books. All financial requests should be given to

Phyllis, and of course they need to be properly

documented and clear whether you are re-

dation. Any income from donations and Ways

and Means projects should also be given to

Phyllis. Phyllis looks forward to Megs speedy
