Record holder
Meet the man Guthmiller is trying to unseat
According to Guinness World Records, the young-
est person to fl y solo around the world is California-native Jack Wiegand who fi nished his trip at the age of 21.
Wiegand completed the trip in June 2013 in just under two months.
Matt Guthmiller is going to have quite the story to tell about his summer vacation when he returns to the Mas-sachusetts Institute of Technol-ogy in the fall.
The 19-year-old soon-to-be MIT sophomore is currently flying around the world and trying to become the youngest person ever to fly solo around the globe.
“It’s been a lot of fun. It’s really cool,” Guthmiller told Metro recently as he was mid-flight from Kuala Lumpur to Manila. “So many people have been so nice to me. Total strang-ers that find out what I’m doing think it’s cool and take me out to dinner and show me around town.”
He will travel roughly 29,000 miles on the trip that will last more than a month. He’s expected to finish around mid July, though delays are pos-sible.
The South Dakota native began flying at age 16 and has since earned his commercial pilot certificate.
He’s flying a small, single-engine plane, which had some of the seats removed to fit extra fuel tanks to increase the range. He’s averaging at least nine hours of flight time during each leg of his journey.
Besides some minor issues related to severe weather and some maintenance after mis-takenly being given the wrong fuel, Guthmiller said the ride’s been pretty smooth.
He’s tweeted pictures of the view from his plane, which in-cluded pyramids in Egypt.
He’s also tweeted about hav-ing hours of Michael Bublé to listen to while making a seven-hour flight over the desert.
While seeing international cities that he’s never visited be-fore has been exciting, he said it’s strange to be on his own.
“Getting to all of these places I thought of visiting over the years and then being by my-self was really weird,” he said. “I’m not there with a group

tries to expand participation and availability of computer science.
Besides the money, Guth-miller is hoping his mission inspires others.
“The biggest thing I’m hop-ing to accomplish is to go out and inspire other people to do things. You go out and kind of break it down and figure out how to do it and you can do it,” he said. “I don’t think there’s anything particularly special about me, or me as a pilot … I just read about other kids do-ing it and figured I could do the same thing.”
Ross Aimer, the CEO of Aero Consulting Experts and a retired United Airlines cap-tain, said the flying solo part of
Guthmiller’s journey is not the hardest aspect — it’s the sup-port needed in planning and on the ground.
“There are still a lot of prob-lems associated with this type of adventure that have to be overcome, but if you’ve got a good team that can take care of all that stuff, then it can be done,” said Aimer.
For Guthmiller, the journey is more than just the potential solo flight record.
“Ultimately … the biggest thing is not the record, just to hopefully inspire other peo-ple,” he said.

A Boston cop who has been on administrative leave for 10 months was arrested Friday for allegedly using a police cruiser without authorization.
Boston Police Officer Pat-rick Donovan allegedly took the vehicle from a Boston Police station in Dorchester sometime between 5 p.m. and midnight on Friday and drove it to Revere, where he was later involved in an altercation with a domestic partner, a police spokeswom-an told The Boston Globe.
He was arrested after police found the cruiser near his Dorchester home, and faces a charge of use of a mo-tor vehicle without authority.
Revere police are looking into the domestic incident.
Police did not say on Sun-day whether Donovan was still a member of the depart-ment, though a spokeswom-an told the Globe that police are taking steps to terminate his employment. MORGAN ROUSSEAU

Several homes were evacu-ated in Lawrence on Sunday morning after police found chemicals and what they believed to be a pipe bomb in a private residence.
Methuen and Lawrence police responded with a haz-ardous materials team and Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad, and after a two-hour investigation, deter-mined there was no threat.
The incident began when police went to the house to recover weapons.
The items apparently belonged to a man in his 40s who lived at the residence and died in May. His mother found the suspicious items, which included a rifle, an AR-15-style gun, fuses and powders, when she was cleaning the apartment.
What authorities initially believed to be a pipe bomb was actually a nunchuck.
Police said the man was not believed to be involved in bomb making. MORGAN ROUSSEAU

Israel has arrested six Jewish suspects in the abduction and killing of a Palestinian teen-ager whose death sparked violent protests in Jerusalem and Israeli Arab towns, a se-curity source said on Sunday.
The security source gave no further details about the suspects who were arrested in the investiga-tion into the abduction and killing of Mohammed Abu Khudair, 16, other than to say they were Jewish and that po-lice saw “nationalist motives”
in the case. A police spokes-man said a gag order had been imposed on most details of the case, commenting only that police had “arrested a number of Jewish suspects who carried out the killing.”

25 Years of addiction - gone!I was addicted to nicotine for over 25 years. I tried to quit many times on my own, but the addiction was stronger than me. I received the Anointing with the Oil and today It have no desire to go bock to this addiction.
12 years of debtsI had debts piling up for over 12 years, and to make things worse, I couldn’t hold a steady job. I received the Anointing with the Oil and determined a financial blessing in my life. Today all my debts are paid, and I have the job I wanted that pays me more than the ones I lost.
Anger was destroying meI had anger bottled up inside of me against someone that had hurt me. I tried to put it behind me, but I couldn’t, It got to the point of me wanting to kill them. I received the Anointing Oil and started to anoint my head, and prayed for myself. That’s when I started to see things differently and I was able to forgive. Today I have nothing against them.

BFF minus the ‘forever’ for Lovato and Gomez
Demi Lovato unfol-lowed former friend Selena Gomez on Twitter. Drama! She also posted then quickly deleted a rather cryptic tweet: “Swimming away from the bulls--- bye b---h.” “Demi tried to help Selena with her substance problems and getting rid of Jus-tin from her life and it is apparent Selena refused
to listen to Demi’s advice,” a source says, according to Hollywood Life.
Biebs losing Gomez?
Justin Bieber returned to his favorite city for getting into trouble, Miami, and boarded a yacht for a private party
filled with booze and scantily clad women. Not that he’s trying to prove a point or anything. Photos show the 20-year-old slugging
back beers, entertain-ing guests and wear-ing several types of
hats but exactly zero shirts. The only thing missing from the party? On-again, off-again girl-friend Selena Gomez, who was living it up back in Los Angeles, celebrating the holiday at a party at Mastro’s Ocean Club in Malibu.
But sources say the separa-tion wasn’t Bieber’s idea, as he reportedly asked Gomez to spend the Fourth with him but she told him to buzz off . And speaking of independence, RadarOnline decided to cel-ebrate the holiday weekend by posting a poll asking readers, “Should Selena dump Justin for good?” An overwhelming 90.05 percent answered yes.
Simpson is a newlywed again
Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson were married over the weekend in front of 250 friends and family at the San Ysidro Ranch, located in Montecito in Santa Barbara County, Califor-nia, according to E! Online. The big day comes after months of planning and several years of engagement, as Simpson first confirmed the engagement in November 2010. They have
one of his standard 15-minute rants, his auto-tuned words accompanied by a booing audience: “I’m not going to call no names, I’m not going to say Nike or anything. I’m not dissing Louis Vuitton, I’m not dissing the Gucci group and s—,” he shouted. “I’m just say-ing, don’t discriminate against me because I’m a black man, or because I’m a celebrity, to determine that I can’t create. ’Cause, you know, no black guy or celebrity’s making no Louis Vuitton nothing.”

Calling on Kanye West gets expected results
Drake may want to take a bit more care in selecting his next substitute to help out while he’s felled by his current mys-tery illness. The rapper had to bow out of a recent appear-ance at the Wireless Festival in London and figured he’d make it up to the crowd by sending Kanye West in his place, according to Pitchfork. But West had other ideas about how to spend the evening. West, who performed with an odd-looking mask obscuring his face, stopped the show for
two children together, 2-year-old daughter Maxwell and 1-year-old son Ace. As Simpson explained during a visit to “Good Morning America” earlier this year, there were no fears of getting cold feet at this point. “I already feel like we’re an old married couple,” she said. “Like, if he wanted to run, he could’ve run when I was hormonal and pregnant.”

Speaking of ‘Thelm a
and Louise’ …
So far during your press tour, how many people have asked to take a selfi e with you?[Laughs] Nobody, nobody! Oh no, one on-camera report-er did. That’s so funny that it became such a big thing. We just did it as an afterthought. And then we were doing the interview for the Hollywood Reporter, and at the end of it, I said, “Let’s just do one,” and we did one with my phone. [My dog] Penny tweeted it, and now it’s a thing.

Susan Sarandon is taking anotherroad trip as Melissa McCarthy’sgrandmother in “Tammy.” GETTY IMAGES
On the road again
Twenty-five years after “Thelma and Louise,” Susan Sarandon is taking a different kind of on-screen road trip with “Tammy.” Sarandon stars as the alcoholic, pill-popping grandmother to the titular Tammy (Melissa McCarthy), out to cause trouble.
You’ve been doing a lot of
interesting smaller projects
lately. And even this, though
it stars Melissa McCarthy, is
from a fi rst-time director.
Mark Duplass called me and told me to do this one, and then Mark and Jay Duplass

called me to tell me to do “Ping Pong Summer.” I always feel like if someone asks you to do something that’s a favor to help get a film up, and it’s a one-and-a-half-week commit-ment, that’s a hell of a lot easier than a month and a half.
I would imagine that happens
a lot: smaller projects with
fi rst-time directors seeking
you out.
Yes. Sometimes it works and other times it’s very frustrat-ing. First-time directors are very often trampled on by whoever buys it or the studio or whoever. … “Producer” is probably the job you can be the least qualified for. There can be nine producers on a movie — they gave a little bit of money or knew somebody or whatever. But on this, every-body that was involved while we were shooting really … was
very protective and very posi-tive and lent their expertise.
Do you connect this fi lm to
“Thelma and Louise” at all?
It didn’t really come up while we were filming. And then a year later when we went to do the press photo shoot, they had a convertible and a desert setting, and I said, “Are you sure you want to do that?
We’re about to have another anniversary for ‘Thelma and Louise,’ and I think there’s going to be a lot of that.” And they were like, “Oh my God, I never thought of that.” And they struck the car! They took the car away!

Interview. The comedy actor gets to play with knives in “Deliver Us from Evil.”
Joel McHale wants everyone to know he can be a badass if needed. His latest film, the supernatural thriller “Deliver Us from Evil,” is a departure for the “Community” star — and that’s exactly why he did it. Well, that and he got to play with knives a whole bunch.
You’ve got a pretty bad-ass
fi ght scene in this fi lm. Is that
meant to be your sort of “Hey
look at me” for action movie
producers?
Yes. In fact, at the end of the movie my character sits up and says, “Hey, action movie producers, what else do you want?” [Laughs] Hell, no one’s called, but I’ll take the calls.
You do handle yourself
quite convincingly in the
fi ght scenes.
Oh good. I worked my ass off
to make sure that looked real. So many people have been like, “Was it hard going from comedy into drama?” No. It was hard learning to knife fight, to make it look real. My greatest concern was that if I looked slow or it looked amateur or anything like that then it would suck. I wanted it
to look blindingly fast.
Don’t most cops pull a gun
on suspects instead of a
knife, though?
Right, yes. But guns are no fun when you’ve got knives. My character is psychotic in that he prefers knives. He would much rather just stick you a couple of times. I think my character would probably be a criminal if he weren’t in law enforcement.
Wearing a Red Sox hat

Yeah. I got s— walking around the set. But he does things just to agitate people. He likes to be contrary. That Boston Red Sox hat really informed the whole thing. He’s like, “Yeah, I’m wearing this, what are you going to do?”
But I imagine you weren’t
walking around the set asking
Teamsters to punch you.
No. Well, I would be like, “It’s a character hat, dummy. I’ve been wearing it for weeks. What’s wrong with you?”

Presidential address
What else are you looking
to do in fi lm besides the
obvious “Community”
movie that will be made
any day now?
It will be made, and it will be bigger than the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise combined. [Laughs] I’ve been doing “The Soup” live, and I spent the entire spring pre-paring for the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. And now I’ve just been kind of getting to know my children again.
How do you think
the Correspondents’
Dinner went?
I know that some critics didn’t like it, other critics liked it. That crowd, they’re going to be divided. Get this, they’re going to be partisan. Boy, I had a ball doing it.

According to a 2013 study published in the journal Sci-ence, more than 20 percent of
women ages 15 and older in North America have suffered some form of violence by their boyfriend or husband.
Palombo is con-cerned about the commodification of women through ad-vertising and fashion, a trend he wants to see reversed by nur-turing respect. His art is intended to give a voice to domestic vio-lence victims, as many may be ashamed to ask for help or believe the abuse is justified be-cause of something they did, he said.
Breaking domestic violence laws, where they exist, should be met with severe punishment, Palombo said, but hopes his work inspires a more personal call to action: “In my opinion, [it] should be men themselves to fight against men who abuse women all over the world.”

Companies are putting more pressure on employees than ever before and pushing them to do more with fewer resources in the same amount of time. Furthermore, there’s an expectation that you’re always answering work emails, regardless of day of the week or if you’re on vacation.
A new study by Career-Builder found that the biggest distractions that workers have are their cell phones (50 percent), gossip (42 percent) and the Internet (39 percent). It is to your benefit to turn your cell phone ring tone off, keep your thoughts about co-workers to yourself and keep yourself from aimlessly searching the Web for personal reasons. Technology can really hurt your productivity and cause you to lose track of time and miss deadlines. Gossip in the workplace can get you in major trouble, because the strength of your relationships with co-workers has a direct impact on your career trajec-tory. Here are some tips for be-ing more productive at work:
Start with a list of tasks that can be completed quickly
This way, you can get the smaller stuff out of the way and give more of your attention and effort to the bigger projects. By doing this, you won’t have to worry about those smaller tasks that could end up getting in the way of the ones that really matter. Let’s say you have a list of 20 tasks that you have to get to in a given day. If

Tip
Try not to multitask if you can help itI fall into this trap all of the time, and most Millennials do too. We try and do multiple projects at once and end
up not getting anything done. Research shows that multitasking decreases productivity. If you give each individual task the attention it deserves, you’ll be more eff ective.
you can eliminate five quickly, it won’t seem as bad, and it’s very motivating to accomplish several items in a short period of time. It’s intimidating having so many tasks sometimes and it puts a lot of stress on you if you do have that many, so eliminate the easy ones first.
Use a calendar to keep track of everythingI use my iPhone calendar to run my life. If there’s someone I know I should call in two months, I’ll mark it down to send them an email then. If I have a speaking engagement or a potential client I have to fol-low up with, I’ll mark it down. This makes life much easier, and you end up not forgetting anything so you’re more effec-tive. Another trick I do is to set two reminders for every event. One occurs a day before and the other happens 15 minutes before. This way, I never miss anything.

Women get a raw deal, why make it worse?Re: ‘Pursuit of pleasure not
protected’ (Metro, July 3-6)
The reason women are upset about Hobby Lobby Supreme Court decision is an undercur-rent in the letter from Justin Dobbs. Women carry the bur-den of unprotected sex, not men. If a child is the result, a man can just walk away, but the pregnant woman must decide to carry a baby to term or abort the fetus.
This is the harsh reality of the gender diff erence. Abortion is a heartbreaking act, which in my opinion, should not be used as a form of birth control. I do not understand why birth control is under attack — is it not better to prevent an unwanted child rather than to abort it?
I wonder if men carried the child, if the men on the court would have voted the way they did. I wonder how many corporations attend a house of worship. Have we not carried “a corporation is a person” too far?MARION LANE, VIA EMAIL, VIA EMAIL
No one’s taking away your birth controlThe mainstream media on TV and in print, aka “state-run media,” play all the lies about the SCOTUS decision in the Hobby Lobby case. You would think every woman in America will no longer have access to birth control products. You just have to do a little research (not much) to fi nd out that 16 contraception items will still be paid for by Hobby Lobby for their employees in their health
care. Four products will no lon-ger be paid for, and the women who want them will have to pay for them by themselves. No one has taken away a woman’s right to choose any contraception item, except for the fact of who will pay. Shame on the media again. This will come back to bite them because the real “war on women” is believing that we are all stupid.J. BACHMAN, VIA EMAIL

Red Sox fall in extras, drop series to Orioles
The Red Sox have played just fi ve games so far in July, but this month is looking a whole lot like last month, as the Sox are 1-4 since last Tuesday. Sunday’s 7-6 extra-innings loss to Baltimore was the most painful of the bundle of “L’s” as Boston rallied to tie the game 6-6 in the seventh inning but ultimately fell to the Orioles, losing the three-game series. Baltimore plated four runs in the top of the busy seventh to take a 6-1 lead, but thanks to a home run by David Ross and RBIs by Xander Bogaerts, Daniel Nava, David Ortiz and Mike Napoli the Sox responded with fi ve runs of their own in the bottom of the inning.
Neither team would score again until the 12th inning when the O’s garnered one run off of two hits with Sox reliever Edward Mujica prov-ing to be the Boston goat. David Lough tripled to deep center and J.J. Hardy singled him home a batter later as Baltimore improved to 40-48 on the season. The Sox fell to 39-49. MATT BURKE
Lester, Lackey have weathered the storm
To think the Red Sox, a team with a record of 39-49 and a team that is now nine games out of first place in the Amer-ican League East, could actu-ally be worse off than they currently are is a frightening thought.
But, without the seasons of No. 1 and No. 2 starters Jon Lester and John Lackey, the Red Sox would more than likely be owners of the worst record in baseball. In games Lester or Lackey have started in this season, the Sox are 21-15. In games either of the two do not start, the Red Sox are 18-34, a pretty large disparity. In total, Red Sox starters have thrown a total of 49 quality starts — Lester and Lackey have 25 of them.
Coming into the season, it was thought the Red Sox had one of the deeper rotations in the league, but going into play Sunday their 4.17 ERA was 24th in baseball.
Despite Boston’s playoff chances becoming slimmer by the day, Lester especially has risen to the occasion, put-ting aside everything that has to do with him and a contract for 2015 to pitch one of the best stretches of his career.
“There’s been times throughout his career where he gets on these stretches and you just give him the ball and get out of the way,” manager John Farrell said.
Lester’s June was spec-tacular as he posted a 1.98 ERA in six starts, the best mark in any single month with at least four starts since he had a 1.84 ERA over six starts in May 2010. In his last

five starts, he’s allowed four earned runs over 37.2 innings for a 0.96 ERA. He’s 3-0 and the Red Sox are 4-1 in those games.
“That is what I try and pride myself on,” said Les-ter when asked about going deep into games. “The bull-pen knowing coming into my starts that I’m going to go seven innings — I’ve always tried priding myself on in-nings and going deep in every start.”
Though Lackey has strug-gled a bit of late, the team has still gone 4-2 over his last six starts and he’s posted a 3.84 ERA for the entire year, 25th in the AL.

Report: Celts still in pursuit of Love
Celtics fans spent the majority of Memorial Day weekend dis-cussing the ways that Minne-sota forward Kevin Love could wind up in Boston. Throughout Fourth of July weekend, that discussion again cropped up, as Yahoo! Sports NBA reporter Adrian Wojnarowski tweeted Saturday that the Celtics are still exploring ways to land the three-time All-Star.
Wojnarowski’s tweet read: “Here’s something that re-mains unchanged: Danny Ainge’s relentless pursuit of creative ways to engage Minne-
NBA. Danny Ainge is said to be looking at “creative ways” to trade for Kevin Love.
sota on a Kevin Love deal.”The Celtics’ key chip in
any major trade would have been the No. 6 overall pick in the draft 11 days ago. The C’s used the pick to select Okla-homa State point guard Marcus Smart. Any deal for Love going forward would certainly have to include the future first round picks the C’s have coming to them from Brooklyn as well as the likes of Jared Sullinger and Kelly Olynyk. The Boston Globe’s Baxter Holmes report-ed this past weekend that the Celtics would also be willing to “use their picks to acquire play-ers from other teams that they could then ship to Minnesota in a deal” for Love.
