mark while being in-charge of both programs.

2014 SUMMIT LEAGUE PRESEASON POLLFor the second-consecutive year, the Pioneers were picked to win the Summit League in the 2014 Summit League Preseason Coaches’ Poll. DU went a perfect 7-0-0 and 18-2-1 overall last season. A total of four all-league selections and two all-tournament team honorees return for DU. The Pioneers received 64 points and eight first place votes in the poll.

SCOUTING NEVADARedshirt sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Quintos returns in net for the Wolf Pack, after posting a 1.21 goals-against average in 2013. Last year’s leading scorer, senior Bobby Reilly also returns for Nevada, after a junior campaign that saw her net five goals. Head coach Dr. Melissa Price begins her fifth season this weekend.

SCOUTING COLORADO COLLEGEHermann Trophy Watch List’s Jessie Ayers will create problems in the attack for Colorado College, as the three-time All-Conference USA First Team selection led the Tigers in scoring a year ago with 27 points on 13 goals and an assist. Midfielder Kaeli Vandersluis, an All-Central First Team selection in 2013, finished her junior campaign with 27 points as well, on nine goals and nine assists. The Tigers return their top for scorers to this year’s team, and return seven seniors to the roster. Head coach Geoff Bennett enters his 11th season in charge of the Tigers, coming off back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, including a 2012 First Round meeting with Denver that the Pioneers won 3-1 at CIBER Field. Bennett enters the campaign with a 113-60-28 record in his first decade at CC. The Pioneers are 2-1 all-time against CC in Colorado Cup games.

55 CAPPED BACKSExperience in the back cannot be overvalued, as the Pioneers return three backs with at least 55 career appearances. Centerback staple Sam Harder has started 65 of the Pioneers 66 matches since the Centennial native stepped on campus in 2011. Classmates Paige Diamond (56 CAPS) and Shelby Wesley (65 CAPS) also bring experience to the Denver backline.

REY OF LIGHT IN GOALFollowing an impressive freshman season, goalkeeper Cassidy Rey begins her second season in a DU kit this weekend. Rey started 18 of the 19 matches she played last season, recording seven shutouts and allowing just nine goals (0.52 GAA). For her performance, Rey was named the 2013 Summit League Goalkeeper of the Year, and was a first-team selection in the conference. Rey took over in net last season following the graduation of four-year starter and all-time wins leader Lara Campbell, who accumulated 62 career victories.

10 NEW FACESWith the departure of the nation’s fifth winningest senior class, and two NSCAA All-Americans, Hooker and his staff have added 10 players to the 2014 roster, including nine freshmen. Colorado native and junior transfer Stella Norman

was also added to the roster in July, coming off a sophomore campaign at Stony Brook where she scored five goals and tallied six assists from an outside back position. Norman played her club soccer at Real Colorado, where she spent most of her time in the midfield. Hooker added three freshmen Black Diamond Soccer Club (Utah) teammates, three California players, two Colorado natives and a New Mexico Rush forward to his roster during the signing period.

COLORADO CLUB CONNECTIONDenver’s nine Colorado natives on its roster were split at the youth level between three of the state’s major club teams. Three of Denver’s six seniors, Caitlin Higgins, Shelby Wesley and Anna Willis all played their club soccer for the Colorado Storm. Norman, redshirt sophomore Francesca Garzelloni and freshman Riley Welch played for Real Colorado, and Harder, sophomore Lilly McSwain and freshman Lauren Conley played for Colorado Rush.

MAKE IT THREEComing off back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament, the Pioneers will look for a third-straight trip to the postseason, a feat the program has already accomplished twice in its Division I history. The 2009 senior class is the only class to go to the NCAA Tournament all four seasons. The 2012 Pioneers made the program’s biggest run in the tournament, defeating Colorado College and No. 4 Maryland to reach the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history.

Associate Head Coach Kris PeatAlma Mater: N.C. State Experience: 7th SeasonServed as DU’s assistant men’s coach and women’s goalkeeping coach in 1999-2000

Assistant Coach Katie HookerExperience: 7th SeasonAlma Mater: DenverAfter a record-setting collegiate career at Denver and Iowa State, Hooker was drafted in the WUSA.

Head coach Jeff Hooker’s presence at Denver serves as a symbol of commitment to the University’s goal of joining the national elite. Hooker became the third head coach in the program’s history, taking over the reins in 1992. He recently concluded his 22nd season, recording his 300th DU women’s soccer victory, while reaching the NCAA Tournament for the second-consecutive season.

The Pioneers have achieved greatness under Hooker’s watch with at least eight wins in all of his 22 seasons, including 13 or more wins in each of the last seven seasons. Since 2006, the Pioneers have gone 138-29-14 (.788) overall and 71-7-5 (.876) in the confernece play, while becoming the first team in history to win four-straight SBC Tournament titles and berths in the NCAA Tournament. Hooker’s teams compiled a school-record 19 wins in 2006, 2008 and 2010.

In their first season in The Summit League, the Pioneers swept the regular season and tournament titles, winning all nine matches against conference opposition. Hooker was named co-coach of the year in the conference, his 10th coaching honor. For the second season in a row, CIBER Field hosted a first round NCAA Tournament contest, a match Denver dropped 1-0.

The 2012 Pioneers not only reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009, but advanced to the NCAA Round of 16 for the first time in program history. Hooker

was named the Western Athletic Confernece Coach of the Year, leading the program to a 17-3-4 overall record and a 6-2-0 mark in the WAC. Kristen Hamilton was named the WAC Player of the Year and was joined by six other Pioneers on WAC all-conference teams in 2012. Denver hosted its first NCAA Tournament game in first season, earning a 3-1 result over Colorado College in the NCAA First Round. The Pioneers followed that up with a trip to Stanford, Calif., where DU erased a two-goal deficit to upset No. 4 Maryland 3-2 in extra time. Kaitlin Bast became the third player in program history to join the 100-point club in that NCAA Tournament win over Colorado College. Bast finished her career with 104 points.

In 2011, Denver finished 16-5-0 (.762) overall and 9-2-0 (.818) in its final year in the SBC. The Pioneers earned a 2-0 win in the Sun Belt Conference Quarterfinals, before falling to Florida International 3-1 in the semifinals. Hamilton was named the SBC Player of the Year. Hamilton and sophomore Nicholette DiGiacomo both earned spots on the NCAA All-South Region First Team. Freshman Sam Harder was named to the NCAA All-South Region Second Team. Six Pioneers recieved SBC All-Conference awards. Katy Van Lieshout and Kari Storslett earned CoSIDA Acadademic All-American First Team honors.

2014 BOX SCORESEX 1: DENVER 1-0 AIR FORCE (AUG. 10, 2014)

The University of Denver women’s soccer team opened the Colorado Cup with a 1-0 win over Air Force on Sunday morning at CIBER Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. “From a coaching stand point, it’s difficult to do,” head coach Jeff Hooker said on having an exhibition game as a part of the Colorado Cup. “You want to get all the players in in an exhibition game, and we weren’t able to do that today, we weren’t able to go that deep. I thought we came out with some good energy, and I thought Air Force was really, really good, especially in the first 20 minutes.”
