O’Reilly, Chief Facilities Executive Los Angeles Junior College was established on September 9, 1929 by the Los Angeles Board of Education. The first Associ- ate in Arts degrees were conferred June 19, 1931. Leslie P. Clausen, member of the Music Department from 1931-1972 and Department Chair for the last 26 years of his career, organized the weekly concert series in 1932, a series still in existence as Music 152. He also helped establish the commercial music curriculum. The Music Department inhabits the building that honors his name. With the establishment of its Commercial Music curriculum in 1946, LA City College became the first college in the nation to offer a degree in jazz. Numerous important jazz musicians attended the program, including Chet Baker, Irving Bush, Eric Dolphy, Bob Florence, Herb Geller, Jerry Goldsmith, Les McCann, Charlie Mingus, Lennie Niehaus, Tommy Oliver, Jack Sheldon, Julius Wechter and Hal Owen. Many talented musicians have studied at LACC, including David Alpert, Jean Fenn, Jerry Lieber, Mike Stoller, George London, Odetta, Leonard Slatkin and John Williams. In addition to the AA degree, the Music Department currently offers vocational certificates in Instrumental Performer (Brass, Guitar, Organ, Percussion, Piano, Strings or Woodwinds), Vocal Performer, Orchestrator/Arranger, and Music Tech- nology. The Music Department currently serves over 1,200 music students per semester. Faculty members are dedicated professors who are active in the music industry as solo performers, arrangers, singer/songwriters, composers, theorists, and recording/sound engineers. Our mission is to offer the highest quality music courses designed for students seeking a variety of educational goals, including applied music program, general education, vocational experience, and the Associate of Arts degree and preparation to transfer to four-year undergraduate schools.
