Last month’s section meeting washeld jointly with our student section atRutgers (see pg 4), and it is exciting tosee students getting involved andlearning more about our industry. Oneof the presentations gave the studentstips on their initial job search, and thismonth one of our speakers will give

another perspective on the job search (see pg 1).

you are part of an award-winning section (see pg 4), andthanks are due to all who volunteer their time, knowledge, and skills to keeping our section in top shape.

If you are not already involved, what talents can you con-tribute? Contact information for the board of directors andcommittee leaders is found on the last page of everynewsletter, and we would be happy to hear from you!

general classes dependent on their central atom(s); silanes areby far the current dominant commercial coupling agent used. The success of silanes and their limitations have created whatthe author describes as a “silane mindset”, which limits inno-vation with polymer compositions containing non-silane reactivecarbonates and other materials. During the period of silane cou-pling agent market development, organometallics such as ti-tanates, zirconates, metallocenes, etc. were consideredgenerally to be polymerization catalysts or a source for metaloxides such as TiO2 via the TiCl4 process. The author wasfirst to introduce heteroatom titanates and zirconates designedspecifically to act as coupling agents that catalyze. The pres-entation will discuss some of the fundamental differences in thetetravalent chemistry of Si vs. Ti/Zr coupling – in practical com-mercial applications (reflected in over 7,000 Science IP Searchgenerated ACS CAS abstracted works by the author and otherinvestigators) – as to why titanates and zirconates as inventedby the author may be better than silanes – and why that’s im-portant to anyone in the polymer business.

The Palisades-New Jersey Section held itsMarch meeting at Rutgers university sothat the school’s student chapter couldeasily attend. Eight members of the studentchapter were present; three of these stu-dents, Meredith Taghon, chapter secretaryMichelle Frondelli, and chapter presidentArya Tewatia presented posters as well.

These poster presentations were followed by talks fromArkema’s Dr. Steven Baxter and Zeena Cherian. Dr. Baxter’stalk, aimed at the students, was entitled “What Hiring Man-agers Look For,” and students gained some useful insight fromthis presentation.

Ms. Cherian’s talk, titled “Principles of Polymer Rheology – Ap-plications to Rigid PVC,” surveyed a complicated, fascinating, important topic. The Rutgers student chapter would like tothank the professional section for hosting a meeting at Rutgers. The effort and time needed to make this possible is much ap-preciated, and the chapter looks forward to a continued rela-tionship with the professional section.

The FOAMS® 2014 conference is planned to address the advances in synthesis, characterization, and properties ofpolymer foams by leading foam researchers in industry and academia. This conference is the premier forum for sharing ideasand learning about new developments in foaming technologies due to the diversity of the attendees.

As an accomplished technical and business leader in polymeric foams, we invite you to give a technical presentation at thisconference. Please consider contributing an original paper on technical or business aspects of your recent, significant developmentsin thermoplastic foams. The submitted papers will be carefully reviewed. The criteria for selection of papers will be based on significantdevelopments that will bring benefits to the foam industry with highest quality and originality. The best papers will be selected andannounced in January 2015. If you have any questions regarding the abstract, topics, or deadlines, please contact Ajit Ranade. Welook forward to your participation. Thank you.

February 20 Board of Directors MeetingCouncilor’s Report: Still pending is the status of SPE’s share of profits from TopCons. We received the Notable Award (2nd levelof 3) for Communications this year. Standards have been set higher since last year. We were rated 16/20 with comments on In-novative communications, two way communications, best practices, and branding (which we need to improve).

House Committee: The contract received from Somerset Hills did not reflect conversations with Pete. This hotel reportedly willwork with us to get in $30 range for 3 meal choices, conference and meeting room). Somerset Hills also asked for a deposit.Rich gave Pines Manor 28 days to respond to a request for a quote for our monthly meetings but nobody did.

Education Committee: A question was brought up about requirement for uS citizenship/permanent residence for individualscholarships. Mike Fisch will ask Brian to investigate requirements.

Membership Report: SPE reported that our Section has 498 regular members (including Emeritus), 49 student, 4 young pro-fessionals (under 40), one of whom works for Princeton. There are more student members at RPI than at Rutgers. Thirteen inthe Student Category have no affiliation with a university. One gave his address in India. There are no lapsed members reported.

Board of Directors Nominations: Candidates are: Art Finkle, Stu Kapp, Arya Tewatia, Mike Carnese for Directors terms 2016-2018; Joe Duska moved to approve this slate, Pete Hayles seconded, approved by voice vote, no dissentions or abstentions.Lenny Davis will forward nominations to SPE by March 31.

January 16 Board of Directors MeetingCouncilor’s Report: Tom Martin reported that Council is waiting for a response from Executive Committee for several pendingquestions regarding split proceeds from TopCons. Status of the SPE website is questionable. There did not appear to be anychanges in the website, promised February 2014. Francis had question about dues rebate, to be reduced 25% from last yearbased, assuming that membership has not been reduced again.

Finance Committee Highlights: Francis McAndrew gave report. The Section’s share of profits from Vinyltec were received andmoved to Ziegler for inclusion in our Education Endowment Fund account. 15% in cash on hand is to be invested fully by Juneby Steve Duerr.
