Caring Hands Dental Clinic of Alexandria has grown to become a major

dental provider for a large part of Minnesota, providing 6481 patients

with appointments in 2014. The clinic began seeing patients served by

Minnesota Health Care Programs in 2006 and was a mostly volunteer

organization at that time. Area dental professionals donated their

expertise and time to provide high quality dental care and education

to thousands of patients, of all ages, over the years. As demand grew

the Clinic expanded hiring a full time staff, including two dentists and

a complimenting dental staff in July of 2012.

With a full time staff in place and with grants and donations obtained,

the clinic also expanded to provide mobile Outreach Hygiene Clinics to

schools, Head Start classes and nursing homes. The patients served at

the clinic and by outreach services now includes 50 Minnesota

counties with West Central and SW Minnesota being the largest areas

served.

The Clinic is recognized as a 501c3 Non Profit, a Minnesota Critical

Access Dental Provider, a National Health Service Corp Site,

nominated for Minnesota Rural Health Team Award and was awarded

the 2013 Minnesota Department of Human Services, Commissioner’s

Circle of Excellence Award.

The Clinic provides complete dental services for all ages served by

Minnesota Health Care Programs, including MnCare, MA, PrimeWest,

Health Partners, Medica, Ucare and Delta Dental. As well, the Clinic

offers a Sliding Fee Scale Program and provides services to Veterans,

Federal Migrant Services, and Headstart Programs. The Clinic also

provided over 2,000 school kids with free oral health education

presentations.

The Clinic’s revenues are obtained by the earned reimbursements it

receives for the services provided and from donations and grants from

area individuals, businesses and organizations. Grants and donations

are used for equipment, dental supplies and instruments, with the

reimbursements used for operational costs and services. In 2014, the

Clinic provided over 5,000 toothbrushes free to citizens of all ages, as

well as toothpaste, floss, and other dental supplies. The Clinic also was

able to continue upgrading with more digital x-ray equipment. The

Clinic also offers portable digital x-ray equipment and portable

hygiene equipment for the Hygiene Outreach Clinics that serve the

many rural counties in Minnesota. The big news is the new facility we

have moved into in April 2015.

Thanks to generous donations and grants including an equipment

grant from the Otto Bremer Foundation. We also received a sub-

stantial grant from PrimeWest Health Community Reinvestment

grant program for a large portion of the construction costs. The

clinic will finally have a much needed brand new facility with state

of the art technology and equipment. This facility is located at 2209

Jefferson Street and we moved in April. This new facility will allow

us to serve more citizens, provide patient and staff comfort, and

also enhance our efficiency.
