  • 2014 AWARDS GUIDE

  • Indigenous & Multicultural community media outlets

and their journalists have never been properly

    recognised.

Since the first multicultural newspaper in Australia,

Die Deutsche Post, was published in Adelaide in 1848 there has never

been a stand-alone award recognising multicultural community media.

Through the Multicultural and Indigenous Media Awards (MIMA) we are

ensuring that ethnic and Indigenous Journalist and media outlets get the

    recognition they deserve.

I encourage all multicultural & Indigenous media outlets to join in this

event both to further multiculturalism, but also to recognise the

    contribution of our community journalists.

This guide outlines the award categories as well as key dates for

    participants.

    Yours sincerely,

    The Hon Shaoquett Moselmane MLC

    Member of Legislative Council

    Parliament of New South Wales

Chairman Multicultural and Indigenous Media Awards

    WELCOME TO THE MULTICULTURAL &

    INDIGENOUS MEDIA AWARDS

  • I congratulate the Hon. Shaoquett Moselmane, Chairperson of the Multicultural and Indigenous Media Awards for his hard work in ensuring that Ethnic and Indigenous Media in Australia get the recognition it deserves.

I was privileged to launch the first ever National Multicultural Media Awards at NSW Parliament back in 2012. These awards ensure multicultural media gets the attention it deserves. Multicultural media is

essential to our democracy, playing a key role in merging international cultures into the Australian identity.

I am delighted once again to be asked to speak and recognise worthy recipients at the 2014 Multicultural and Indigenous Media Awards.

In the past, Ethnic media was seen as simply a foreign language press, and at times viewed with suspicion. Some thought it served as a hindrance rather than help. In some sectors of our community, Ethnic media was not trusted, and restrictions and government controls were imposed.

Ethnic Journalists and media outlets, as well as those who ran them, were therefore never recognised for the valuable work they provided to Multicultural Australia.

Today, Multicultural and Indigenous Media and journalists have the capacity to bring news and views to every household like never before.

They not only bring news and events but also real estate, business, arts and culture, politics, sports and lifestyle.

Our thriving Ethnic press has the capacity to bring communities together and break down social and cultural barriers. They inform, they inspire and turn challenges into opportunities.

Ethnic Media is not just a mass communication medium, it is a social and cultural medium combining the voices of many.

I encourage you to nominate those deserving of the 2014 Multicultural and Indigenous Media Awards and I look forward to welcoming you to the 3rd annual presentation night at NSW Parliament House on September 10, 2014.

  • About the Multicultural & Indigenous Media Awards:

Multicultural & Indigenous media has contributed to the Australian way of life since

1848, and to date other than the Multicultural & Indigenous Media Awards there has

been no stand-alone recognition for the journalists, owners, and administrators of

    such media outlets.

History has shown the important role they have played Australia-wide. It is time to

recognise the work of multicultural and Indigenous media in our community.

The program will, therefore, showcase the talents of multicultural and Indigenous

media with the aim of encouraging innovative journalism, nationally.
