How is Super Lawyers different?

• The list is created methodically and objectively by combining research with peer nomination and review.

• The Super Lawyers selection process has been validated by courts and bar associations in the United States, and in April 2013, was granted a patent from the United States Patent and Trademark office (U.S. Pat. no. 8,412,564).

• It is an annual list, not a lifetime achievement.

• It is exclusive—recognising no more than five percent of London solicitors on the Super Lawyers list, and no more than 2.5 percent on the Rising Stars list.

• You cannot buy your way onto the Super Lawyers or Rising Stars list.

An email will be sent out with a personalised link to My.SuperLawyers.co.uk. If any lawyers in your firm do not receive the email, simply point them to My.SuperLawyers.co.uk and they can log on by following the instructions.

4 march 2014 recommeNdatioNS From Firm Managing partners and marketing directors are invited to submit nominations on behalf of the firm. Please encourage a representative from your management group to email the names of no more than ten percent of the lawyers in your firm to [email protected].

Super LawyerSSuper Lawyers selects solicitors using a rigorous multiphase process that includes peer nominations, evaluations and our independent research. each candidate is evaluated on 12 indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement.

The objective is to create a credible, comprehensive and diverse listing of outstanding lawyers that can be used as a resource for referring lawyers and consumers searching for legal counsel. Since Super Lawyers is intended to be used as an aid in selecting a lawyer, we limit the solicitor ratings to those who can be hired and retained by the public, i.e., lawyers in private practice and Legal Aid lawyers.

rISInG STarSThe Rising Stars list is developed using the same rigorous selection process as the Super Lawyers list, except:

• To be eligible for inclusion in Rising Stars, a candidate must either be 40 years old or younger, or in practice for 10 years or less.

• While up to five percent of the lawyers in a state are named to Super Lawyers, no more than 2.5 percent are named to Rising Stars.

Things to remember when discussing Super Lawyers:

• Super Lawyers never refers to an individual lawyer or group of lawyers.

• Super Lawyers is always plural.

• Super Lawyers Magazine is always italicized.

• List the year and jurisdiction when applicable, e.g., 2014 London Super Lawyers list.

• The Super Lawyers list recognises no more than five percent of solicitors in London. Super Lawyers does not claim to have named the top five percent nationally.

• The Rising Stars list recognises no more than 2.5 percent of solicitors in London.

We stress the importance of proper usage of the terms “Super Lawyers” and “Rising Stars.” It is a distinct honour to be selected and we want each solicitor on the list to be proud of his or her inclusion.

A lawyer on our list is not a “Super Lawyer,” or a “Rising Star.” Rather, “he or she has been named to the 2014 London Super Lawyers list or 2014 London Rising Stars list.” When used properly, the term is not descriptive or comparative. Instead, it is a fact-based statement.

“Super Lawyers” can refer to any or all of the following: the list, the magazine, the selection process and the accomplishment.

SoLIcITor noMInaTIon GuIDeLIneS• In-firm nominations are counted only if there are an

equal or greater number of out-of-firm nominations.

• each lawyer may nominate a maximum of 21 other lawyers (they are limited to seven in-firm nominations, seven out-of-firm nominations and seven Rising Stars nominations).

• no “campaigning” or soliciting nominations from other lawyers is allowed. Those nominations may be disregarded and lead to disqualification.

• Any nominations should be based on first-hand knowledge, rather than reputation—e.g., opposing counsel, co-counsel or someone a lawyer has observed in court or during a transaction.

The nomination process is the first step of a multiphase selection process. nominations will remain confidential.

If you are selected to Peer Review, you will receive an email with instructions on how to evaluate the nominees in your state and practice area. Participating involves no meetings and a minimal time commitment.

A lawyer’s contribution as a Peer Reviewer is an important step in our research process. All responses are confidential.

If you are selected to Peer Review, your name will not appear on your evaluation list. however, your name will appear on a list reviewed by other Peer Reviewers within the same practice area(s).

How do I nominate solicitors for Super Lawyers and rising Stars?If you are a practising lawyer, visit My.SuperLawyers.co.uk. In the nominations section you can add comments to your nominations and rate each lawyer on 12 different criteria. If you are not a practising solicitor, send an email to [email protected] with comments and suggestions on lawyers we should consider for inclusion. These “informal nominations” carry no point value in our selection process, but will ensure that the lawyers are placed in our candidate pool for further evaluation.

can you confirm that you received my ballot?If you completed your ballot online and provided us with your email address, you will receive confirmation by email.

If I am listed in Super Lawyers this year, do I automatically get listed in the next year?no. We perform a new round of balloting and Peer Review each year, so the list undergoes some degree of change from year to year. being listed one year does not guarantee that you will be published the following year.

Do you list non-private practice lawyers such as public defenders, prosecutors and in-house counsel?As a lawyer rating service, Super Lawyers is intended to be a resource to help in the selection of legal counsel. As such, we limit the list to lawyers who can be hired and retained by the public, i.e., lawyers in private practice and Legal Aid lawyers.

Does a solicitor pay to be published in Super Lawyers?no. We maintain strict separation between research and advertising. The names of all solicitors selected by Super Lawyers are published in our print publications and at SuperLawyers.co.uk at no charge whether lawyers advertise or not. Advertising sales do not begin until after the selection process is completed.

How many lawyers make the list?The Super Lawyers list recognises no more than five percent of solicitors in London. The Rising Stars list recognises no more than 2.5 percent of solicitors in London. To be eligible for inclusion in Rising Stars, a candidate must either be 40 years old or younger, or in practice for 10 years or less.
