  • OUTLOOK

    8

A year after featuring 18 newcomers and turning in the best sin-gle-season in program history K-State baseball has the benefit of19 returning letterwinners entering the 2014 season. The overall 34-man roster is looking to build upon last years unprecedented run.

STARTING PITCHINGThe Wildcats made the 2013 run because they had one of the na-tions top offenses, filled with timely hitting, and a bullpen that wasable to hold on to leads late in games. The group of starting pitchersnever earned its respect despite playing its role at important timesdown the stretch of the regular season. K-State allowed 3.6 runsper game in its final 13 regular season games, nearly a full run lessthan the entire season (4.5 runs per game). The Wildcats went 10-3 over the stretch. Over the course of the entire season, the K-Statepitching staff set a school-record for the aluminum bat era (since1977) with a 3.92 ERA.

Left-hander Joe Flattery and his 13 starts have left (he signed as anundrafted free agent with the Detroit Tigers). Jake Doller, who madenine starts last season, has graduated. All of that means the Wild-cats starting staff will feature less-weary or altogether new performers in 2014.

Despite being a sophomore this season, Levi MaVorhis is the one re-turnee with the most starting experience and is expected to be a keycog in the starting staff. Last season, MaVorhis made four Fridaystarts in Big 12 play, one in the Big 12 Championship tournament, and one in the first game of the Manhattan Regional against WichitaState. In each start, the Wildcats won. MaVorhis finished with a 3.81ERA (13er, 30.2ip) as a starter, helping him be named to the All-Big12 Freshman Team.

Although he did not make a start in 2013, senior left-hander JaredMoore will be given an opportunity to be a member of the Wildcatsrotation this season. The Boulder, Colo. native turned in his finestfall camp this offseason and is ready to step up in his final year withthe Wildcats.

Moore has made seven starts in his career, all of which have takenplace before May 2, 2012. In his seven career starts, Moore is 1-4with a 7.53 ERA (17er, 20.1ip), but with more than a seasons worthof pitching experience since his last start under his belt, Mooresstats as a starter are not reflective of his present abilities.

The remaining portion of the rotation (Sunday and mid-week) hasyet to be determined. The first few weeks of practice will help sep-arate the pack, providing head coach Brad Hill and pitching coachJosh Reynolds with some options by the time the season starts onFeb. 14.

One possibility includes right-hander Matt Wivinis. The DownersGrove, Ill. native has made 17 starts in 42 career appearances, in-cluding 14 starts in 2013. Wivinis ended 2013, however, as a re-liever, limiting opponents to three hits and two runs in 8.0 innings(2.25 ERA) across seven outings. Wivinis even held Oregon Statescoreless in two relief appearances during the Super Regional.

Other candidates to start include redshirt freshmen Colton Kalmusand Nate Griep or any of the true freshmen entering their first seasonat the collegiate level.

BULLPENWith the starting staff not completely defined, the K-State bullpen a strong suit of the 2013 run to the Big 12 championship is amix of impressive returning performers and untested newcomers.

The Wildcats bullpen is at its strongest at the back end, starting withreturning closer and right-handed sophomore, Jake Matthys. TheSpring Lake Park, Minn. native was tabbed by Collegiate Baseballas a Third Team Preseason All-American this year after he garneredseveral accolades in his freshman campaign, including Big 12 Fresh-man of the Year, All-Big 12 First Team, and Baseball America andCollegiate Baseball Freshman All-American.

How did Matthys earn all those honors? By simply rewriting someof K-States record book. Despite making only one start the finalgame of the season Matthys established a K-State freshmanrecord for wins (9), which are also tied for the second-most by anyclass in a single season for the program. He made 33 relief appear-ances, the most by any K-State pitcher, and his 2.05 ERA in 34games is the seventh-best by a Wildcat. The most important metric, though, in which people judge a closer is his saves total and Matthysturned in the most saves by any K-State freshman with nine.

Setting up Matthys was the previous record holder for saves by aK-State freshman, Nate Williams. The right-hander began the seasonas a starter for the Wildcats, going 3-3 with a 4.11 ERA in sevenstarts. The calendar turned to April, though, and Williams flipped hisrole into a reliever a role he seized handily. In 17 relief appear-ances, Williams had a 1.39 ERA (5er, 32.1ip), 24 strikeouts and 14walks.

A few other options in the bullpen with prior Division I experienceinclude Wivinis, Landon Busch and Jordan Witcig. While Wivinis hasstarting experience, sophomore southpaw Busch pitched exclusivelyout of the bullpen in 2013. The Brookings, S.D. native posted a 4.58ERA in his first collegiate season, but he did hold opponents to asub-.200 batting average all season, including a .100 averageagainst in four Big 12 outings.

Similar to Busch, Witcig held opponents to a sub-.200 batting aver-age, with Witcig limiting opponents to 10 hits and seven walks in14 2/3 innings throughout the season. Overall as a reliever in hisfreshman season, Witcig posted a 2.45 ERA (3er, 11.0ip) in eightgames (He made one spot start in the Big 12 Championships againstOklahoma, allowing three runs in 3.2 innings).

The majority of the pitching staff is inexperienced at the Division Ilevel, but that is a familiar storyline to the Wildcats. Last season, the K-State pitching staff featured seven letterwinners and 10 fresh-men. This year, the story is about the same: eight returning lettermenand eight newcomers (five true freshmen, two redshirt freshmenand a junior transfer).

After redshirting in 2013, Griep and Kalmus are expected to play asignificant role for the Wildcats in 2014. Kalmus is a former three-sport athlete at Rowlett High School, registering a 1.66 ERA in hisjunior and senior seasons. Griep, meanwhile, will be looking to em-bark on his college career after being named a Louisville SluggerHigh School All-American and Nebraska Gatorade Player of the Yearwhile at Millard West High School in Omaha, Nebraska.

Jake Whaley, a 64 right-hander from Marshalltown, Iowa, arrivesin Manhattan after pitching for Marshalltown Community College forthe last two seasons. The junior transfer is a strikeout pitcher as hetallied 59 punchouts in 44.2 innings last season. He even has a no-hitter to his name when he fanned nine and walked one in a seven-inning contest on May 6, 2012.

The group of five true freshmen include southpaw Jordan Floyd(Kansas 2013 Class 5A co-Pitcher of the Year, as selected byKansas Association of Baseball Coaches, and the Yankees 25th-round draft pick in last years draft); Jake Fromson (product of LeesSummit High School in Missouri and the Building Champions base-ball academy); Ethan Landon (first team all-state selection in hissophomore and junior years at Lincoln Southwest High School inSioux Falls, S.D.); Jon Roblez (Class 4A All-Kansas First Team in2013); and Braxton Wilks (a two-way player out of Episcopal HighSchool in Houston, Texas, posting a 1.29 ERA and batting .380 inhis senior season).

CATCHERSSenior Blair DeBord leads a group of catchers that includes sopho-more Alex Bee and freshman Tanner DeVinny. DeBord was a semifi-nalist for the Johnny Bench award in 2013 after batting .327 with11 doubles and 37 RBI in 60 games. Bee played in 12 games as afreshman last season, including one start at Kansas. DeVinny, mean-

while, enters his first season at K-State. The Lucas, Texas nativewas named all-state in 2013 by coaches and writers, and theswitch-hitter figures to see time as the designated hitter this seasonfor the Wildcats.

OUTFIELDThe biggest losses from the 2013 season are evident when lookingat the outfield. Despite the departures of All-Big 12 players JaredKing and Tanner Witt along with the reliable Jon Davis, K-State hassome returnees looking to help fill the gaps.

A player expected to step up is junior Mitch Meyer. The Stilwell,Kansas native batted .289 (36-for-128) with five doubles, five triplesand four home runs last season, but within those overall numberslies a .340 batting average with seven extra-base hits against Big12 opponents. Meyer split his time between right field and desig-nated hitter, but with all three starting roles open in the outfield,Meyer expects to be more of a stalwart in the K-State outfield in2014. Over a nine-game stretch last May in which the Wildcatswon seven games Meyer hit .429 (15-for-35) with 13 RBI.

Another candidate for the outfield starters is Clayton Dalrymple. Thesophomore played in 34 games as a true freshman last season, pri-marily as a late-game substitution or pinch hitter, and batted .343(12-for-35) with six RBI and two stolen bases. He did pick up threestarts, including two in center field and one in left.

The Coppell, Texas native enjoyed a strong fall camp this past off-season as he earned the Wildcat Ironman and Hustle awards, show-ing hard work every day of camp and improving the most amongK-State position players.

Other candidates for playing time in the outfield are a pair of juniorswho have made it to the 2014 season in different fashions. KyleSpeer, a native of Manhattan, played in 23 games last season, in-cluding seven starts as the designated hitter and two in right field. The left-handed Speer has logged 55 games in his K-State career.

Junior transfer Max Brown arrives in Manhattan after spending thelast two years at Bellevue College in Washington. The Washingtonnative hit .339 in his freshman season at Bellevue and then hit.378 with 21 extra-base hits and 17 stolen bases in his sophomorecampaign. Brown, who was named 2011 KingCo 3A Player of theYear in high school and Pacific Association Division All-American in2013, competed with the New Zealand national team in the 2013World Baseball Classic qualifiers (Browns father was born in NewZealand).

Another pair of transfers to provide depth includes junior Nate Haleand sophomore Brooks DeBord. Hale played junior college baseballat Cochise College in Arizona, batting .367 with 9 doubles, 3 triples,35 RBI and a .511 on-base percentage in his sophomore season.DeBord, younger brother of catcher Blair DeBord, spent his freshmanyear at Hutchinson Community College. He played in 45 games forthe Blue Dragons in 2013, scoring 20 runs and posting a .409 OBP.

INFIELDWhen a group of four players bats .324 or higher in a season and ison base more than 40% of the time as the K-State starting infielddid in 2013 one would enjoy having such a group return the nextseason. Thankfully for the Wildcats, that hope is a reality.

All four starters from last years conference-winning team firstbaseman Shane Conlon, second baseman Ross Kivett, shortstopAustin Fisher and third baseman RJ Santigate return in 2014, pro-viding veteran leadership for the younger Wildcats.

After stellar seasons, Conlon and Kivett were selected in the 2013MLB Draft, with Kivett being taken by Cleveland in the 10th roundand Conlon being drafted in the 21st round by Kansas City. Despitethe prospects of a future pro career, both Kivett and Conlon electedto forgo signing professional contracts and decided to return to K-State.

Hills 338 career wins withK-State are the second-most in program history, trailing his predecessor Mike Clark (1987-2003) andhis 435 victories. Hills career winning percentage of .585 (338-239-3) as K-State head coach is thethird-best in program history, behind Mike Ahearn (.734, 93-33-1) and Coursaut (.627, 86-51-1). Whats Returning

Kivett has already received accolades entering the 2014 season, in-cluding preseason All-American nods from Baseball America,NCBWA, Collegiate Baseball newspaper and Perfect Game. Kivettis the first Wildcat in program history to earn four preseason All-Americans.

Conlon, meanwhile, turned in a strong fall camp, earning the GoldGlove award, an honor given to the top defensive player throughoutthe 45 days worth of practice. Last season, his first as a full-timefirst baseman after pitching during his freshman and injury-short-ened sophomore year, Conlon also tied for the team-lead in homeruns with seven.

While the right side of the infield is stable, the left side boasts justas much talent. Fisher batted just under .300 his freshman seasonin 2012, collecting 13 hits in 33 games. Last season, though, Fisherbroke out to not only hit well over .300 and nearly set a single-sea-son doubles record for K-State, but he led the Big 12s best offensein batting average with a .361 clip. Fisher, who was a semifinalistfor the Brooks Wallace Award given to the nations top shortstop stepped up in Big 12 play, batting .412 with 17 RBI and 18 runsscored.

Conlon, Kivett and Fisher were each named to the All-Big 12 FirstTeam last season, rightfully so. One infielder who did not receivesuch honors, however, was Santigate, despite the Las Vegas nativehitting .324 with 29 RBI and a .409 OBP over the course of the sea-son. Santigate started all 60 of the games he played in and hasstarted 90 of the 110 contests he has played in while at K-State.

With a strong core of starting infielders, the Wildcats have depth ateach position as well to provide stability over the course of the four-month season. Sophomores Lance Miles and Jake Wodtke are re-turning letterwinners, with both appearing in double-digit games lastseason. Wodtke played in 10 games, all off the bench, while Milesstarted in 14 of his 31 games. A native of The Woodlands, Texas,Miles batted .241 over the entire season, but in Big 12 action, heregistered a .368 average (7-for-19) with five RBI. Miles played inevery K-State game down starting May 17, seeing time in the Big12 Championship, Regional and Super Regional.

Carter Yagi is the veteran of the two transfers in the infield. The sec-ond baseman from Salt Lake City, Utah played his first two collegiateseasons at the College of Southern Idaho. The left-handed hitter hasa knack for outworking his opponents and carries with him to K-

State a .356 career batting average in junior college and 23 doublesand 38 stolen bases.

Sophomore transfer Taylor Anderson is no stranger to Big 12 baseball.Anderson is the son of former Nebraska head coach and currentOklahoma hitting coach Mike Anderson. The younger Anderson isa switch hitter who sat out all of 2013 while attending Cuesta Collegein California due to a medical redshirt. The Lincoln Southwest HighSchool product played his freshman season with Northern Colorado, playing in 41 games and batting .271 (26-for-96) with the Bears.

The lone freshman infielder is Tyler Stover. Stover, a rare Wildcatfrom California, was his conferences player of the year during hissenior season, which not only helped him earn a scholarship offerfrom K-State but also be drafted in the 40th round of the MLB Draftthis past summer by the Colorado Rockies. Stovers father, Scott, isthe head baseball coach at Solana College (JC) in California.

The infielders will look to provide stability in the field and in thelineup, helping the rest of the team adjust to new roles in 2014 - aswell as new expectations after last years Big 12 championship andrun to a Super Regional.

Head Coach11th Season Emporia State 85

Hard work and determination have fueled K-State baseball since Brad Hill was introducedas the 20th head coach in program history during the summer of 2003. And, in just 10years, Hill has taken a program that was coming off six-straight seasons of bottom-halfBig 12 finishes and turned it into a national power.

During his time as the K-State skipper, Hill has guided the Wildcats from the depths of theleague to four NCAA Regional appearances, a Super Regional berth and the first conferencechampionship since 1933. The success, which reached an all-time high in 2013, is a con-tinuation of a stellar career in which Hill has amassed a winning percentage of .693 (756-334-3) at four-year schools, which ranks sixth nationally among active coaches.

Hill has also had a keen eye on evaluating talent and then developing those players as hissquads have produced 52 draft selections since 2005, including 33 in the past five yearsalone and 27 that went undrafted out of high school. K-State has seen an increase eachyear of players taken in the MLB Draft, capped by a school record four top-10 round draftpicks in 2011. In 2013, Jared King was drafted in the fifth round to give K-State five top-five round draft picks since 2009, equaling the total of the previous 43 years combined.

K-State baseball players have also gained numerous national accolades under Hill's guid-ance. In the first 106 years of the program, the Wildcats accumulated 14 All-Americandesignations, while K-State has produced 20 All-America honors in the last seven seasonsalone, including first team honors by A.J. Morris (2009) and James Allen (2011).

Not only has Kansas State baseball excelled on the field, but Hill has put an emphasis onhis players' performance in the classroom. Under Hill, the Cats have had 53 Academic All-Big 12 selections as well as seven Academic All-District honors and two Academic All-Americans (Brett Scott in 2007 and 2008; Jason King in 2011). In addition, K-State'sAcademic Progress Rate (APR) has steadily improved, now reflecting an outstanding four-year average of 954.

The 2013 season proved to be the most storied in program history as Hill's players formeda unity unlike any other team early in fall camp and used that resilient togetherness toproduce the school record for wins, the program's first Big 12 Championship and a NCAARegional host site selection, while the Wildcats finished just one win shy of reaching theCollege World Series.

K-State, which was predicted to finish seventh in the Big 12 Preseason Coaches' Poll, madethe biggest jump by a regular-season championship in league history as the Wildcats brokethe school record for conference victories with 16. Teamed with the football and men'sbasketball titles in 2012-13, the baseball team completed a feat of conference champi-onships in one academic year that had only been accomplished one other time in Big 12history and just three other times nationally during the BCS era.

K-State, which set a school record for final ranking at 13th, used the Big 12 Championshipand momentum in the conference tournament to secure a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tourna-ment. The Wildcats, who were making just their fourth ever NCAA Regional appearance, swept the NCAA Manhattan Regional with wins over in-state rival Wichita State, Bryantand 13th-ranked Arkansas.

Hill, who was named the 2013 Big 12 Coach of the Year and ABCA Midwest Region Coachof the Year, saw a school-record seven players earn All-Big 12 First Team honors, includingPlayer of the Year Ross Kivett, Freshman of the Year Jake Matthys and Co-Scholar Athleteof the Year Jared King. Both Kivett and King went on to earn All-America accolades.

For a second-straight season, Hill got the most out of his team when it counted the mostas he led the Wildcats to the postseason for the sixth-straight season in 2012. K-Statewon its way to the Big 12 Championship as it took two-of-three from Kansas in the homefinale before winning the first two games in the regular-season series finale at Texas Tech just the third series win in Lubbock in school history. Additionally, Hill tutored at least
