Kansas States hard work throughout the 2012 season sent theWildcats to another postseason appearance, reaching the Big12 Championship for a school-record sixth-straight year. How-ever, the Wildcats missed an NCAA Regional appearance for the firsttime in four seasons, hitting a speed bump that resulted in a 27-31overall record and has them working even harder to ensure K-Stateis back on the national scene in 2013.

The entire program was very disappointed in our performance lastseason and it is something we remind ourselves of every day, headcoach Brad Hill said. We need to improve in different areas somethings in our control and some things out of our control. We are fo-cusing on things we can control and letting last year be in the past. But we still take valuable lessons from it.

One of the biggest factors K-State can control is experience in thefield as it returns six position players, including a pair of All-Big 12performers. That experience will need to carry a young pitching staffduring the beginning stages of 2013.

We are going to need to rely on our experience and leadership inthe field, commented Hill. With Ross Kivett, Blair DeBord, JaredKing and Tanner Witt, you have guys with a lot of game experience. We dont want to put undue pressure on them to play well, but weneed them to play pretty well to start off.

CATCHERSAn experienced catcher, DeBord returns for his junior campaign. De-Bord took over catching duties towards the end of 2012 after servingas the designated hitter at the beginning of the year. After an injurybenched the Manhattan product in 2011, DeBord came back to hit.257 with 28 RBI last season. Even more impressive is that he didnot commit a single error in 208 fielding chances.

Blairs leadership, ability to call a game, experience and commu-nication skills will be very important to the development of our pitch-ers, Hill said. He earned the right to call a game last year, and itrelieved a lot of pressure on managing the pitching duties during thegame. He was also much improved at the plate this fall.

One of the surprises of the fall, Joe Goodwin performed well enoughto secure the backup spot behind DeBord. A product of HutchinsonCommunity College, the switch-hitting Goodwin compiled a .340 av-erage in 2011 but was away from the game last year.

We didnt know what to expect from him being out of baseball fora year, Hill admitted. He showed he can be a quality backup. IfBlair needs to sit out, we can put Joey in there. We feel very goodabout him being the backup right now.

Adding depth are freshmen Alex Bee from Chatham, Ill., and ColeDavis from Piedmont, Okla.

INFIELDThree of the four infield positions are held down by quality defensiveplayers in Shane Conlon at first base, Kivett at second base and RJSantigate at third base. Conlon, primarily a pitcher in 2012 beforean arm injury cut his season short, is one of the top defensive firstbasemen in the league and will be used as a situational hitter.

Were not really worried about him defensively, Hill said of Conlon.Shane needs to be who he is. He has no problem being the guy thatcan move runners (at the plate). Hes very good at first base, plushes a good vocal leader on the field with game savvy. He should bea pitching coach over at first base to help out the younger pitchers.

A team leader as just a sophomore in 2012, Kivett was the everydaystarter at second base while proving to be one of the toughest outsand hardest players to contain on the base paths in the Big 12. Asthe leadoff hitter for a majority of the 2012 season, Kivett got onbase at a .395 clip and finished second in the league with 25 steals.

He just needs to be himself, Hill said. He tried to do too muchlast year at times. He needs to be the guy on offense that gets onbase, creates runs for us and be the competitive, tough out that heis to wear those pitchers down.

A smooth defensive third baseman that saw his offensive gameprogress, Santigate looks to hold down the starting spot at the hotcorner. A former player at Long Beach State, Santigate is looking tobuild upon the final 12 games of 2012 when he hit .324 with fivedoubles and seven RBI. The end of last year, coupled with a greatsummer performance, was a springboard for Santigate into the fall.

He is much more comfortable this year, Hill said. I couldnt haveasked for any more out of him in the fall. He really stepped up hisleadership. He feels more confident in himself and more comfortablebeing here for a year. I really like the way he handled himself in thefall, particularly putting himself out there as a leader.

The biggest position battle was at shortstop as the Wildcats mustreplace a 56-game starter. With the starting nod at one of the mostimportant positions on the line, freshman Lance Miles ended up win-ning the job thanks to his consistency throughout the fall.

He did things right, Hill said of The Woodlands, Texas, product. When youre the shortstop, you have to go to the right spots, youhave to know the plays and be a leader on the field by communicat-ing. He was probably the guy that did that the best, and that wasover the course of time. He just wore the other guys down becausehe did it more often than everyone else.

A returning backup from last season, sophomore Austin Fisher en-tered the fall looking to lock up the starting nod at short, but an injuryslowed him down before Miles took over. Fisher, who can also playthird base, will continue to push for playing time.

Also providing depth to multiple infield spots is junior Zach Hendrix,a transfer from Western Nevada College, as well as freshmen BenSego from Southlake, Texas, and Jake Wodtke from Shawnee, Kan.

OUTFIELDOne of the strongest position groups heading into 2013 seems to bethe outfield where a pair of returning All-Big 12 selections in Kingand Witt will roam center field and left field, respectively.

King, a two-time All-Big 12 pick, led the league with a .377 regular-season batting average while collecting a team-high 15 doubles, seven homers and 47 RBI. The Dublin, Ohio, product finished in thetop 10 of the Big 12 in 10 categories, including top-five marks inslugging percentage, total bases, hits and on-base percentage.

With a solid arm and speed to close the gaps in the outfield, thesmooth-hitting King will look to let the game come to him in 2013while elevating his performance once again.

The big thing for Jared is trying not to do too much, Hill said. Heshad two great years. At times last year, he really tried to do too muchand go win games for us when he didnt have to go win games. Heled the Big 12 in hitting, but he got himself out at times. He justneeds to be himself and understand there are a lot of good playersin front of him and behind him in the lineup.

Witt transitioned from shortstop to outfield prior to last year and wasgreat defensively while contributing more at the plate. A competitorat the top of the lineup, Witt finished fifth in the Big 12 with 40 walks, while he was also carded 20 steals to tie for sixth in the conference.

Tanner is a tough out when hes in the right mindset and knows hisrole, which is getting on base and being a competitor, Hill said ofone of his four seniors. You have him and Ross at the top of thelineup and then here comes Jared King hitting behind those two guys. When hes in the mode of getting on base, stealing bases and scoringruns, hes as good as anyone in the conference.

Returning from an injury that sidelined him in 2012, Mitch Meyercame back with a vengeance in the fall and won the starting job inright field. The redshirt sophomore went 10-for-31 with three dou-bles, a home run and six RBI in 17 games as a freshman in 2011,and he will look to become a more dynamic member of the offense.

Mitch was the surprise of the fall. He just really caught the eye ofeveryone, said Hill. He put himself in a position to be one of themiddle-of-the-order guys and play every day. He was aggressive atthe plate, but he was also one of the fastest guys. Hes going to bea threat on the bases, plus he has the best arm in the outfield.

Jon Davis, who was on fire over the second half of last year, will likelyfill the designated hitter role while working as a backup in both theoutfield and infield. Davis led the team and finished second in theBig 12 with a .387 conference-only average. After going just 1-for-18 to start the year, Davis hit .357 over the final 33 games.

Also providing depth in the outfield will be Damion Lovato, a two-year player at New Mexico Junior College who hit .374 in 2012, alongwith a Manhattan native in sophomore Kyle Speer and freshmanClayton Dalrymple from Coppell, Texas.

PITCHERSAs is the case with any Brad Hill-coached team, the Wildcat skipperexpects seniors to step up and lead the team. In the case of thepitching staff, starter Joe Flattery and reliever Jake Doller must takeon a leadership role and help develop the pitching staff.

After settling into the role as a weekend starter, Flattery shined atthe end of the year by surrendering no more than three earned runsin six or more innings during each of his final three regular-seasonstarts. That stretch included a complete game at Texas Tech whenthe left-hander allowed one run on six hits with five strikeouts.

Joe just needs to be focused, Hill stated. He needs to have thatedge that he wants to be our No. 1 guy. We really need him to makea step up. He can be a swing guy for us this season if he decides hewants to be the Friday-night guy and goes out there on a mission todo that. That could really change the complexion of our ballclub.

Doller, a hard-throwing right-hander, has seen action in 50 careergames but is looking to become a more consistent part of the bullpenrotation. The Lake Waukomis, Mo., native is coming off a great off-season and looks to use that momentum into his final campaign.

Following Flattery in the starting rotation could be sophomore NateWilliams. A right-hander, Williams served as the programs closer ayear ago and set the school record for saves by a freshman with six,a mark that was also fifth in the Big 12 last year. A member of theBig 12 All-Freshman team, Williams worked exclusively as a startingpitcher throughout the summer and fall.

We hope that Nate continues to polish up, Hill said. His compet-itiveness is what gets him by, but now can he become a pitcher andnot a thrower? Its just a matter of being able to pitch five, six orseven innings as opposed to just going out there and airing it out forone inning. I think he has the potential to do that.

The starting job following Flattery and Williams early in the seasonwill be up for grabs between a few young candidates in freshmanBlake McFadden and sophomore Matt Wivinis. McFadden was one ofthe top recruits out of Missouri following a decorated prep career. Thanks to a 10-0 record and 0.13 ERA as a senior, McFadden earnedFirst Team High School All-America honors by Collegiate Baseball, was the Prep Baseball Report Pitcher of the Year in Missouri andwas the Gatorade Missouri Baseball Player of the Year.

Wivinis, a right-hander from Downers Grove, Ill., showed potentiallast season after seeing action in 21 games with three starts.

The Wildcat bullpen will also need to improve from last year as twokey pitchers right-hander Gerardo Esquivel and left-hander Jared

YEAR NO. 113 The 2012 season marks the 113th in the history of Kansas State Baseball. The program began in1897 and has played every year with the exception of 1918, 1943, 1944 and 1945 seasons. Enteringthis year, the Wildcats have an all-time program record of 1,660-1,676-10 (.498), but they have steadilyimproved that mark thanks to a 143-96-1 mark over the past four seasons. In fact, prior to the 2009season, the Wildcats were 63 games below .500 all-time and are now just 16 games below the .500mark entering this season. Additionally, K-State was 89 games below the .500 mark prior to the 2005season before the Wildcats have collected non-losing seasons in seven of the last eight years, the beststretch since Kansas State had 11-straight non-losing seasons from 1924-1934.

OFFENSIVELY SPEAKING Kansas State has plenty of weapons returning offensivelyfor the 2013 season. The Wildcats bring back four of their topfive hitters from last season, including Big 12 regular-seasonbatting champion Jared King. Of the top 10 offensive cate-gories, head coach Brad Hill sees no worse than 59 percent oflast years production back in six categories, including a 70.2percent mark in steals. The Wildcats also have 60.3 percentof their hit production back, including a 68.2 percent mark indoubles. The area in which Kansas State must develop young talentis in the pitching staff as it has no category other than savesthat has at least 60 percent of last years production back in2013. The biggest area in which K-State must have youngerplayers rise is in games started as the Cats only have 28 oftheir 58 starts back from last year after losing 14-game starterKayvon Bahramzadeh and 11-game starter Matt Applegate.

HELLO, MY NAME IS... The Wildcats used fall practices to get 19 newcomers acclimated to Division I baseball. Outside ofhead coach Brad Hills first season of 2004, only two other times Kansas State had as many as 19newcomers on the roster, but luckily for the Wildcats, those years turned into winning seasons as the2005 squad went 30-25, while the 2009 team set the school record for wins with 43.

THE FRIENDLY CONFINES Following its consecutive trips to South Carolina to open the season, K-State will enjoy a 19-gamehomestand to begin the month of March. The 19 consecutive home games are tied for the secondlongest in school history and the longest since 1982. During the long homestand, the Wildcats will faceeight different opponents including Big West power Cal Poly and a pair of Big Ten foes in Minnesota andNebraska. Additionally, the homestand also sees the beginning of conference play as Kansas Statehosts West Virginia in the Mountaineers first Big 12 series.

QUICK STARTS With 19 newcomers and 19-straight home games in the month of March, it is important for theWildcats to get off to a quick start this season as 16 of their final 22 games are on the road. Fortunatelyfor K-State, history will be on their side as the Cats are 206-79 (.722) in non-conference games underhead coach Brad Hill, including a 96-42 (.696) mark over the past four seasons. In regular season non-conference games, the Cats have been even tougher as they are 194-62(.758) over the past nine years and a combined 87-29 (.750) from 2009-12.

FAMILIAR SURROUNDINGS Although the Wildcats will play their first six games on the road, the venues should be familiar to amajority of the upperclassmen. K-State opens the year with three games at The Citadel Memorial Chal-lenge at Riley Park in Charleston, S.C., the same facility the Wildcats went 2-1 to open the 2010 season. The next week, K-State travels back to The Palmetto State for the Baseball at the Beach event at Tick-etReturn.com Field in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Kansas State also participated in the event two years ago asit topped then-No. 17 Coastal Carolina to open the weekend before finishing with a 2-2 mark.

WELCOME BACK For the third year in a row, Kansas State will welcome back key members of the program that arecoming off injuries in first baseman Shane Conlon and outfielder Mitch Meyer. Conlon, who both pitchedand played first base as a freshman, was exclusively a pitcher last year until an arm injury cut his yearshort. The Naperville, Ill., product used the rest of the 2012 season to rehab and was granted a medicalhardship, thus making him a sophomore again. Conlon will now concentrate solely on first base. Meyer, a young prospect who showed flashes as a freshman in 2011, is back after sitting out lastseason. The Stilwell, Kan., native played in 17 games as a freshman, going 10-for-31 (.323) with threedoubles, one home run and six RBI.

A DECADE AT THE HELM The 2013 season marks the 10th season for Brad Hill as the head coach at Kansas State. The sec-ond-winningest head coach in program history with 293 victories, Hill is the fourth man in school historyto lead the Wildcat program for at least 10 years behind the winningest coach in school history, MikeClark (17 years, 435 wins), Ray Wauthier (14 years, 77 wins) and Charles Coursaut (11 years, 86 wins).Hills longevity at K-State is parallel to the quality of coaches in the Big 12 Conference as he is one offive current Big 12 coaches to be at their school for at least 10 seasons.

ONE OF THE NATIONS BEST Due to his development of the K-State Baseball program over the past decade, head coach BradHill ranks as one of the best coaches nationally. Entering the 2013 season, Hill ranks seventh nationallyamong active coaches with a .692 career winning percentage at four-year institutions. Among the in-dividuals that Hill trails in that department are college coaching legends Mike Fox (North Carolina, .744),Mike Martin (Florida State, .743), Gene Stephenson (Wichita State, .735), Wayne Graham (Rice, .715)and Jim Morris (Miami, .697).

PRODUCTIVE SUMMERS Ross Kivett, RJ Santigate, Gerardo Esquivel and Jared King each picked up summer honors from var-ious organizations. Among the honors, Kivett, Santigate and King were each named one of the topprospects in their respective leagues by Baseball America, giving K-State the most in the Big 12. Kivett was named the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) Player of the Year afterleading the league with a .401 batting average. He was also named a First Team All-American secondbaseman among all summer leagues by Perfect Game, the eighth-best professional prospect in thePGCBL and was the 10th best pro prospect in the league by Baseball America. Santigate, playing for the East Texas PumpJacks of the Texas Collegiate League, was named the10th-best prospect in the TCL by Baseball America and was 12th by Perfect Game, while Esquivel wasranked 14th by Perfect Game. Rounding out the honors was King, who was named the 25th-best prospect in the prestigious CapeCod League by Baseball America.

RUNNIN CATS K-State, which led the Big 12 in steals over a three-season stretch before finishing second in theconference last year, looks to continue its aggressive approach on the base paths in 2013. The Wildcatsreturn 70 percent of their stolen bases in 2012, including three players in Ross Kivett (25), Tanner Witt(20) and Jared King (16) that stole over 15 bags. All three players are within reach of the schools careertop-10 mark, led by Witts 36 which is just seven shy of the top 10. As a team, the Wildcats have ranked in the top 20 nationally in steals each of the last five years, including a second-place mark in 2009 with a school record 149. Last season, the Wildcats were 11thin total steals with 104 a year after finishing fifth nationally with 123.

PRESEASON HONORS Jared King led Kansas States preseason honors as he was named a Second Team All-American byPerfect Game and was a First Team All-Big 12 pick by College Sports Madness. Joining King on the all-conference team by CSM was Tanner Witt as a second-team selection. King, entering his third year in the program, is honored for what he has done his first two years inthe program as he is on the cusp of enter the Kansas State record book for several career categories. The Dublin, Ohio, product is just one point shy of the enter the top 10 for career slugging percentage at.558, while his career batting average of .346 is eight points shy of the schools top 10.

    Whats Returning

Moore move from sophomores to upperclassmen. Esquivel was astarter at the beginning of last year but found his role as a middle-inning reliever later in the season, finishing with a 3-1 record.

Moore, who saw time as both a midweek starter and a weekend re-liever, is looking to contribute more on weekends as a junior. He went2-4 with a 5.21 ERA overall last year, but showed how he could bea shut-down reliever by going 1-0 with a 3.54 ERA out of the bullpen.

Both have shown flashes of being pretty good, Hill said of Esquiveland Moore. Gerardo may have the most potential on our staff andhas the makings of being a top-10 round draft pick, but unfortunately

he hasnt shown that to us yet. He can be a difference maker for usthis year and really change the complexion of our ballclub if hemakes a step forward. We need a reliable guy that every time hegoes out, you know what youre going to get, and the same withJared. Last year it was like flipping a coin. We cant be flipping coinswith our juniors and seniors.

One dark horse for the K-State pitching staff is Witt. A former highschool pitcher, Witt was exclusively a position player as a freshmanand sophomore before throwing in eight games last year. The right-hander did not allow an earned run in nine innings and surrenderedonly six hits. Witt could be an option as the closer in 2013.

He has a feel for the game. Hill said. Its just a matter of himstaying sharp. There were games last year he was very good, whichshowed that we probably should have been using him a lot more. What we have to do is make sure were pitching him regularly andnot just breaking him out every two weeks. If were really going touse him as a pitcher, he has to pitch on a more regular basis.

Other than McFadden, as many as four other freshmen could pitchsignificant innings for the Wildcats in 2013. Those pitchers includeleft-handers Landon Busch and Hayden Nixon, as well as right-han-ders Colton Kalmus and Jordan Witcig.

    HEAD COACH

Hard work and determination have fueled Kansas State baseball since Brad Hill wasintroduced as the 20th head coach in program history during the summer of 2003.And, in just nine short years, Hill has taken a program that was coming off six-straight seasons of bottom-half Big 12 finishes and turned it into a national power, guidingthe Wildcats to the schools first three NCAA Regional appearances.

During his time as the K-State skipper, Hill has guided the Wildcats from the depths of theleague to the programs best record in school history and the first NCAA Regional appear-ance in 2009 before making return appearances in 2010 and 2011. The postseason successis a continuation of a stellar career in which Hill has amassed a career winning percentageof .692 (711-315-3) at four-year institutions, which ranks seventh nationally among activecoaches.

Additionally, under Hills tutelage, Kansas State was one of only two northern schools(Oregon State) to earn three-straight at-large bids to a NCAA Regional from 2009-11.

Hill has also had a keen eye on evaluating talent and then developing those players as hissquads have produced 54 draft selections since 2005, including 35 in the past five yearsalone. K-State has seen an increase each year of players taken in the MLB Draft, cappedby a school record four top-10 round draft picks in 2011 when Evan Marshall (4th; Arizona),Jason King (4th; Detroit), James Allen (7th; Cincinnati) and Nick Martini (7th; St. Louis)were all drafted in the top 10 rounds.

K-State baseball players have also gained numerous national accolades under Hills guid-ance. In the first 106 years of the program, the Wildcats accumulated 14 All-Americandesignations, while K-State has produced 15 All-America honors in the last six seasonsalone, including first team honors by A.J. Morris (2009) and James Allen (2011).

Not only has K-State baseball excelled on the field, but Hill has put an emphasis on hisplayers performance in the classroom. Under Hill, the Cats have had 47 Academic All-Big12 selections as well as six Academic All-District honors and two Academic All-Americans(Brett Scott in 2007 and 2008; Jason King in 2011). In addition, K-States Academic ProgressRate (APR) has steadily improved, now reflecting an outstanding four-year average of 945.

For a second-straight season, Hill got the most out of his team when it counted the mostas he led the Wildcats to the postseason for the sixth-straight season in 2012. K-Statewon its way to the Big 12 Championship as it took two-of-three from Kansas in the homefinale before winning the first two games in the regular-season series finale at Texas Tech just the third series win in Lubbock in school history. Additionally, Hill tutored at leastthree players to All-Big 12 honors for a third-consecutive season, while K-State placedseven on the Academic All-Big 12 squad, which tied the school record.

Although K-State reached another NCAA Regional in 2011, the beginning of the season didnot go as planned for Hill and K-State as they were on the outside looking in when it cameto qualifying for even the conference championship. After sitting at 20-15 overall and 5-10 in conference play, the Wildcats needed a strong finish just to make the conferencetournament. That is exactly what happened as Hill tutored the Wildcats to a 16-8 finish intheir final 22 games, including a 7-4 mark against league foes to place sixth in the Big 12and qualify for their fifth-straight conference championship.

Hills coaching and motivation didn't stop there as, at the Big 12 Championship, K-Statedefeated No. 12 Oklahoma twice to compile 36 wins and earn the programs third-straightNCAA tournament berth.

    THE BRAD HILL FILE

While many preseason prognosticators doubted his 2010 team, Hill raised the bar of suc-cess at K-State. The Cats continued their trend of improvement in 2010 as he guided histeam to a third-place finish in the Big 12 standings - their highest since the leagues in-ception in 1997, after K-State was predicted to finish as low as ninth in some preseasonpolls.

K-State also registered the second most wins in school history with 37, second to the 2009season total of 43, thanks in part to six players that earned All-Big 12 honors under Hill, including the 2010 Big 12 Player of the Year Nick Martini. Hill also tutored Martini to secondteam All-American honors.

The 2009 season proved to be the most storied of its time. Predicted to finish ninth in theBig 12 Baseball Preseason Poll, Hill guided K-State to a school-record 43-win season -including a program-best 14 conference victories to finish fourth in the Big 12 regular sea-son standings, the schools best finish since placing second in the Big Eight in 1990. TheCats earned their first Top 10 ranking during the season and finished the 2009 campaignin the national polls for the first time in school history when Baseball America ranked K-State No. 19 in its final poll.

Hill, who garnered 2009 Big 12 Coach of the Year and American Baseball Coaches Asso-ciation (ABCA) Midwest Region Coach of the Year honors, directed K-State to its first everNCAA Regional appearance when the Cats earned an at-large berth as the No. 2 seed inthe Houston (Rice) Regional. The Cats didnt stop there as they tallied a pair of victories inthe regional, including one against No. 1 seed and home team Rice, to advance to the re-gional final.

Along the way, the 2009 Wildcats set numerous school marks, including season wins (43),Big 12 victories (14), Big 12 finish (fourth), hits (675), steals (149) and strikeouts (453).
