Dear Friends, 2014 was a year of monumental growth for Schol- arMatch. Our full-time staff grew from 3 to 5, our volunteers increased to 73, number of students served rose to 365, and scholarships awarded reached over $250,000. Our most impactful development, however, was the addition of our third program component: College to Career. Our students overcome many barriers to get to college, but the obstacles do not end there. Even small, predictable bumps in the road, like a tough test, a difficult roommate, or a brush with homesickness, can derail the college ambitions of low-income students completely. They need a solid support system throughout college. Similarly, access to a career network and coaching are equally essential for guiding students into the professional world. Our College to Career program, based on emerging research from Stanford University and University of Texas, provides this critical support system to college students. It emphasizes two key transition points: adjusting to freshmen year and starting a career. Because of tremendous community support, we were able to expand our program to include these vital services and meet our students needs as they complete the journey to college graduation and into the working world. Thank you. Dear Friends,

2014 was a year of monumental growth for Schol-arMatch.

Thank you.

STUDENT OUTCOMES

Andy heard about ScholarMatch at his high school and began attending weekly workshops at our drop-in center. As a first generation college student, he found the college admission process daunting, and our staff and volunteers helped him every step of the way. The result was a generous offer from a school he had previously never encoun-tered: Ohio Wesleyan University.

But when a summer orientation visit

to the school went awry and a missed connecting flight left Andy stranded alone overnight in the O’Hare airport, his confidence was shaken and he returned home questioning his deci-sion to go to college at all, believing his travel disaster to be a sign that college was not for him.

ScholarMatch was the support system Andy needed at this critical time. Many hours of discussion brought perspec-

tive to the experience and, in the end, we helped Andy take the college leap: our Program Director coordinated a Midwest business trip with Andy’s flight to Ohio so he had a companion on the plane and friendly face dropping him off at his dorm room. Today, Andy is thriving in school, studying biology, participating in school social activities, and even looking forward to his next air travel adventure.

Founded in 2010 by award-winning author Dave Eggers, ScholarMatch has grown into the only major nonprofit that combines an innovative crowdfunded scholarship platform with game-changing college access and career mentoring support. A virtual and physical hub for community support, we work both online and in-person to make college possible for underserved youth by matching students with donors, resources, colleges, and professional networks.

Our typical student comes from a family earning less than $25,000 per year and attends a high school with just one coun-selor per 500-800 students. ScholarMatch’s three-pronged program provides the targeted support these students need most: hands-on help applying to college, financial assistance with tuition, and a support system throughout college. We have provided counseling services to more than 500 students, awarded nearly $700,000 in scholarships, and engaged hun-dreds of community supporters.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHTMeet Mel McCrea –Volunteer For two years, Mel has been instru-mental not only as a college coach instilling hope and conviction in ScholarMatch students’ lives, but also in rallying her network to support our programs in other ways. Most recently she helped match a student with a career mentor at her company and it resulted in the ScholarMatch graduate finding full-time employment in the profession of his dreams!
