GROVE CITY COLLEGE

Grove City College head men's soccer coach MikeDreves has many reasons to be optimistic about histeam's success in the 2014 season.

Returning eight starters and 17 letterwinners froman 8-5-6 campaign in 2013 that included an NCAA all-divisions record 11 overtime matches, four of five lossesdecided by just one goal and a nine-match unbeatenstreak to close the season, the Wolverines appearpoised to take that next step in 2014 and contend for aPresidents' Athletic Conference title.

Returning all three starters from the front line of aWolverine offense that led the PAC in both corner kicksand shots, Grove City will look to junior Seth Loew tolead the offensive attack for the third year in a row.

A two-time All-PAC First Team selection and anNSCAA All-Great Lakes Region Third Team honoree in2013, Loew has led the Wolverines in scoring in eachof his first two seasons, including a team-best ninegoals last year.

Senior Jordan Carmichael and junior Tim Shackletonjoin Loew on an experienced Wolverine front line.Carmichael joined Loew as two of just four players tostart all 19 games last season, scoring two goals andadding a pair of assists. Shackleton started 18 gamesat forward, recording a goal and an assist.

Sophomore David Wurmlinger looks to return froman injury that cost him more than half his freshmancampaign to battle for a starting role at forward.Wurmlinger netted two goals and added an assist de-spite playing in just nine matches.

Sophomore Stephen Betteridge will compete for astarting job both at forward and in the midfield for theWolverines after seeing time at both positions in 2013.

2014 SEASON PREVIEW

SEASON P

REVIEW

Junior Ben Weaver will likely take over as Grove City’sstarting goalkeeper in 2014 after posting an 0.74 goalsagainst average.

Joining Reese in the midfield is junior and All-PACHonorable Mention selection Justin Phillips. After miss-ing the early part of the year due to injury, Phillipsworked his way back into the rotation to start the finalseven games of 2014.

Seniors Mike Shupp and Kyle Richert will both com-pete for starting roles in the midfield for Grove City.Shupp started seven games in the midfield last seasonwhile Richert, who returns after sitting out last season, made five starts during the 2012 campaign.

Sophomore Frank Hueber and junior JonathanMathes will each factor into the equation at midfieldfor the Wolverines. Hueber played in all 19 games as afreshman while Mathes looks to see an increased roleafter missing much of last year due to injury.

The Wolverines biggest hole to fill exists on theback line after losing four-year starter and two-time

All-PAC honoree Dan Adams to graduation. However, senior George DeAugustino, sophomore Nich Leaman, and junior Jake Botzenhart all return as starters to pro-vide stability defensively.

DeAugustino, who owns a team-high 50 careerstarts, looks to return to the Wolverines in full strengthas the anchor of the defense after battling injuriesthroughout his junior year.

Leaman started all 19 games as a freshman at out-side back while Botzenhart started 14 games at insideback a year ago.

Sophomore Drew Cypher will also compete for astarting role on the back line after starting six gamesduring his freshman campaign.

In goal, junior Ben Weaver looks to take over full-time goalkeeping duties after splitting time as a starterduring both the 2012 and 2013 campaigns.

Last year, Weaver posted a 4-1-1 record, threeshutouts and a 0.74 goals against average while see-ing action in seven games and starting five.

Grove City hosts NAIA member Mount VernonNazarene University to open the 2014 season on Au-gust 29. The Wolverines will travel to Waynesburg fortheir conference opener on October 3.

A pair of Reese goals lifted Grove City to a 2-0 winat Thiel on October 8 to open that stretch while Weaverearned the shutout in goal. The Wolverines followedwith a 4-0 victory over visiting Bethany four days later,as sophomore Jon Mathes scored his first goal.

GROVE CITY COLLEGE

PROGRAM HISTORYSince its humble beginnings in 1938, the Grove City

College men’s soccer program has emerged as one ofthe region’s finest. Few programs can match the sus-tained level of excellence that the Grove City programhas attained over the last 70 years.

The soccer program began in 1938 under the di-rection of legendary coach/athletic director Robert E.“Bob” Thorn.

Grove City’s rise to the area’s elite began duringthose formative years as the Wolverines posted a 10-3record in the 1941-42 seasons. Following World War II,Grove City continued to excel on the field.

In 1948, the Wolverines recorded their first unde-feated season by going 5-0-3. Four years later, GroveCity completed its first perfect season by winning allsix matches on the 1952 schedule.

Grove City followed with an 18-4-2 mark over thenext three seasons. In 1956, Grove City went 7-0-0. Frank

Grove City’s 1948 team (above) went 5-0-3 while the1952 team (below) went 6-0-0.

Grove City made its first appearance in the NCAAChampionship Tournament in 1962.

The 1964 team (above) went 9-0-0 while many of thesame contributors helped the 1965 Wolverines (below)register an 8-0-1 mark.

Sbrocco became the College’s first All-American as heearned Honorable Mention at outside left that season.Ross Emerson graduated as the squad’s all-time lead-ing scorer with 48 goals.

Following Thorn’s retirement, Dan Leviton took overas head coach from 1957-61. During his tenure, Peter

Buttner became the College’s first two-time All-Ameri-can as he earned First Team All-America in both 1958and 1959.

Cliff Wettig replaced Leviton as head coach in 1962and made an immediate -- and immeasurable -- im-pact on the program. In his first season, Wettig guidedGrove City to a 6-4-1 record and the school’s first-everNCAA Tournament appearance.

The next year, John Mulholland earned HonorableMention All-America at fullback as Grove City went 6-3-0.

The 1964 team set a new program record for winsby going 9-0-0. In 1965, only a 1-1 draw against Pitt

kept Grove City from a second straight perfect seasonas the Wolverines went 8-0-1.

The 1969 squad tied the single-season programrecord for wins by going 9-2. Fullback Matthew Luxearned Second Team All-America that year.

The Wolverines compiled a 7-3-0 record in 1970,Wettig’s final year as head coach. Russ Trimmer thencoached Grove City to a 5-3-1 mark in 1971.

Don Lyle became the fifth head coach in programhistory prior to the start of the 1972 season. After four

Grove City went 7-0-0 in 1956, Bob Thorn’s final seasonas head coach.
