A Message from the PresidentWelcome to Wallace State Community College!

Fall semester is an exciting time as we welcome first-time students to campus to begin their collegiate careers and welcome back returning students as they continue their path toward completion of a degree or certificate.

At Wallace State, we are committed to student success, wherever you fall along the continuum of beginning to comple-tion. We provide a variety of services such as free tutoring, success coach-ing, graduation coaching, and an array of services through Lion Central to help with the admission and registration process. Be sure to contact Lion Central to schedule a meeting with an advisor and to learn more about the services available to students. Remember, nothing takes the place of starting right, and that means meeting with an advisor.

We offer many activities designed to help students become engaged with each other and in the learning process because research shows that students who are engaged are more likely to be successful. Consider taking part in an extracurricular activity and attend-ing some of the many events hosted on campus during the semester, including athletic events, arts and music events, lectures, films and so on. There’s even a trip to Europe on the horizon.

The Wallace State Common Read brings the entire campus together around a single book. The Common Read selection for 2014-2015 is John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars. Recently released as a major motion picture, the book has spent dozens of weeks on The New York Times best-seller list and won critical acclaim as one of the best books of the year. Look for events re-lated to The Common Read to be announced throughout the semester, beginning with a lecture on September 24. Our Learning Communities classes are another great way for students to engage in cross-disciplinary learn-ing and attend unique events while meeting students in other classes. These classes are designated by a Learning Communities note next to their listings in this schedule.

When you join Wallace State, you are joining an institution that is nationally recognized as an Achieving the Dream institution, nationally ranked by Community College Week, designated among the Top 120 commu-nity colleges by the Aspen Institute.

We look forward to serving you. Be One of Us, and get in a Wallace State of Mind.

Wallace State Community College is an open admissions insti-tution. All students who have earned a high school diploma or GED are eligible for admission. In addition to an application for admission, students are required to supply the College with an official copy of their high school transcript or official copy of their GED scores. Students transferring from another college must submit an admissions application and an official copy of their transcript(s) from each college they have attended. Transient students must submit a transient letter from their home institu-tion stating the courses they will be allowed to take in addition to an application for admission.

Graduates from a non-accredited high school with a diploma demonstrating successful completion of a course of study on the secondary level based upon the Carnegie units required by the state education agency at the time of the award (currently 24) and minimum ACT score of 16 or the equivalent SAT score of 790 are eligible for admission. If the above requirements are not met, the student must take a GED test.

Special requirements may apply to International Students seek-ing admission. Students must submit official transcripts, an I-20 Form, TOEFL scores, declaration of responsibility statement, proof of insurance, and all appropriate admissions forms. Fur-

ther information is available by contacting Lion Central, Wallace State’s One Stop Enrollment Center, or viewing the WSCC Catalog online.

Accelerated high school students who have completed the tenth grade, have a cumulative “B” average, and are recommended by the local principal may enroll at Wallace State only in post-secondary courses for which high school prerequisites have been completed. Exceptions may apply for students document-ed as “gifted and talented” according to the standards included in the State Plan for Exceptional Children and Youth.

The Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit High School program allows eligible high school students to enroll in college classes concur-rently with high school classes, either on the college campus or at the high school, and receive both high school and col-lege credit. The student must be in grade 10, 11 or 12, have a “B” average; and obtain written approval of the Principal and Superintendent.

Non-Credit students who enroll exclusively in non-credit courses may be granted admission without a minimum score on the ACT or SAT, a GED Certificate, or transcripts from a high school or college.

Administrative Fee: An administrative fee not to exceed 5% of tuition and other institutional charges or $100, whichever is smaller, shall be assessed for each withdrawal within the period beginning the first day of class and ending at the end of the third week of class.

NOTE: The first $80 for full-time and first $59 for part-time students is non-refundable unless the class is cancelled by the college. Insurance fees are non-refundable.

Tuition refunds are computed according to the date the student notifies the college Admission’s Office of their official withdrawal, not his/her last date of class attendance.

Refund for partial withdrawal: Students who do not completely withdraw from the college but drop a class during the regular drop/add period will be refunded the difference in tuition paid and the tuition rate appli-cable to the reduced number of hours, including fees appropriate to the classes dropped. There will be no refund to a student who partially withdraws after the official drop/add period has ended.

Wallace State does not give cash refunds: Stu-dents must complete a Drop/Add Form for the Admis-sions Office (available through Lion Central in the Bailey Center lobby). Under normal circumstances, refund checks are issued weekly and mailed to the student. If payment was made by check, the student must wait 15 days for the check to clear before a re-fund is issued. Refer to the current academic calendar for drop/add and withdrawal deadlines.

A Wallace State Learning Communities class, or “LC”, is a group of students (usually one 9:30 course designated “LC” in the sched-ule) who participate in organized, group-learning outside of the classroom. Students in a LC share common experiences centered on their academics and community, achieve a deeper understanding of their course’s subject matter, build relationships with one another, and learn together.

Wallace State Community College will begin the sixth annual Com-mon Read Program Fall 2014. The Common Read brings together students, faculty, and staff in dis-cussions and activities centered on a new selection each year. The choice for 2014/2015 is The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. This work of fiction has been described as “Insightful, bold, irreverent, and raw…award-win-ning-author John Green’s most ambitious and heartbreaking work yet, brilliantly explor-ing the funny, thrilling, and tragic business of being alive and in love.” The subject will provide fodder for classroom discussion on relationships, philosophy, death, and growing up. Copies of the book will be available for purchase in the WSCC Bookstore. Please join us in reading this great book even if it’s not required in your courses. Watch the WSCC calendar for postings about a variety of speakers and events related to the book starting this August. Happy reading for fall 2014!
