Fuerst ThoughtsCynthia Fuerst, Library Director

A challenge that all libraries face with popular materials is that they are popular, and that can mean waiting for someone else to return a copy before you can check it out. When there is a great new book you are really excited about, or a hot new movie that you’re looking forward to seeing, that wait can be frustrating. We’re with you on this: we, too, really want you to have the materials you want, the moment you want them.

That’s why as part of our strategic plan we are finding ways to deliver more popular materials to more of you, more quickly. One of the improvements we’ve made this year was to add a whole new e-book platform, 3M Cloud Library. Like OverDrive/My Media Mall’s Advantage titles, 3M Cloud Library e-books are exclusively for our patrons, which means less or no waiting for you.

Another new offering that we are excited about is Hoopla Digital. With your library card and an Internet connection, you now have instant, on-demand access to movies, TV shows, and audiobooks. Find details about the new Hoopla Digital streaming media service on the back cover of this issue or on our website.

Need help getting started? Book a librarian at one of our “Free Advice for Your Device” one-on-one sessions. We’ve expanded those, too, to meet growing demand.

These improvements are just the beginning—we continue to explore new ways to up our game. All of our staff and our Board work hard every day to ensure we deliver the materials, services, and excellent customer service that you value, now and into the future.

Happy reading, happy holidays, and happy new year,

New Storybook Trail & Little Free Library at Ryerson Woods We are pleased to be a partner on a new endeavor that combines reading, nature, art, and quality family time. The new “Trail Tales” path and Little Free Library at nearby Ryerson Woods provide visitors with a story to read as they walk and a new book to keep at the end of their hike. The path features seven illustrated panels that together recount the story of Miss Maple’s Seeds by children’s author and illustrator Eliza Wheeler. Each panel features part of the story, along with suggestions for a related nature activity that all ages can enjoy. The activities were designed by Lake County Forest Preserve environmental educators to encourage families and children to observe and explore the outdoors a little more closely. At the end of the trail, visitors will find a Little Free Library—a small hand-made box filled with nature-related books. Hikers are encouraged to “take a book, return a book.” The books in the Little Free Library are stocked by a volunteer from the Vernon Area Public Library. A second Trail Tales path and Little Free Library are located at Greenbelt Forest Preserve in North Chicago. The installations at both locations were spearheaded by the Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods in partnership with the Lake County Forest Preserves and the Waukegan Public Library. Ryerson Woods Forest Preserve is located on Riverwoods Road, south of Route 22 in Riverwoods. Access the Trail Tales path from the Brushwood parking area at the preserve.

Friends of the Vernon Area Library are accepting applications for the sixth annual Allen Meyer Memorial Scholarship to be awarded to one high school senior who lives in the Vernon Area Public Library District. Library News

Library volunteer opportunitiesThe Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts a colder than normal winter for the Chicago area, so it’s a good time to visit our library to stock up on books and to consider volunteering. We have a four-step volunteer placement process: application, orientation, interview, and training. Time requirements vary from a few hours as needed to an ongoing weekly commitment. Many volunteer opportunities are right here in the library (Shelving Aide, ESL Teacher Aide, Media Maintenance, Events and Programs, to name just a few), while others are out in the community (Senior and Homebound Services or Little Free Library). We offer lots of options, variety, and flexibility. Share your love of stories, reading, and life-long learning—volunteer at the Vernon Area Public Library. Learn more at a volunteer orientation on Thursday, January 8, at 7 pm or Tuesday, February 24, at 1 pm, or contact Kathy Hayes, coordinator of volunteers, at [email protected] or 224-543-1409.
