Todays khutba is the fourth one in the series ofkhutbas delivered previously on the subject of Islam, iman, and ihsan, and will focus mainly on the topicofihsan. What does the word ihsan mean? It means

perfection or excellence. It is derived from the Ara-bic root letters ha-seen-noon ( ). It conveystwo meanings: (1) to do something good to someoneelse, and (2) to do something at the level of perfec-tion oritqan. According to a hadith, Allah (SWT)loves to see ones job done at the level ofitqan. Some people have the misconception that ihsan isrestricted to the modes of worship. As a matter offact, ihsan implies doing anythingfee sabilillah inthe best possible way.

The part ofHadith Jibril relating to ihsan says,Then he (the man) said, Inform me about ihsan. The Messenger of Allah answered, It is that youshould worship Allah () as though youcould see Him, for though you cannot see Him yetHe sees you.

Generally ibadah is translated as worship, butits meaning is far more comprehensive and includes

both worshipping Allah (SWT) as well as obeyingHim. It is derived from the root letters ain-baa-daal ( ) from which we have the word abd, which means a slave.Ihsan, therefore, is to becomea humble slave of Allah (SWT), submit completelyto His will, and do everything commanded by Himin the best possible way with intense love, devotion, and conviction as if one is seeing Him. Since Allah(SWT) is beyond time and space (transcendent), onecannot see Him physically. The expression Asthough you could see Him would therefore implythat one is constantly thinking about Allah (SWT).One is constantly conscious of Allah (SWT), andone is not living in heedlessness (ghaflah) any more.

There are three narrations of the part relating toihsanin Hadith Jibril (1) to do the ibadah of Allahas if you are seeing Him, (2) to fear Allah as if youare seeing Him, and (3) to work for Allah as if youare seeing Him. All these three stages are beautifullysummed up in the ayah, Say, My prayers and sac-rifice, my life and death, are all for God, Lord of allthe Worlds. (al-Anam, 6:162)Ihsan is a compre-hensive term of the Quran and the hadith. It notonly refers to elevating oneself spiritually, but has todo with obeying Allahs commands and struggling

for His cause with full devotion.Unfortunately, the term ihsan from the perspec-

tive ofdeen has been supplanted by the institution ofSufism. The word Sufism or Sufi is not to be foundin the primary sources of Islam. It has crept into the

body of Islamic terms from an unknown foreignsource. It is said that Sufi originally referred to anascetic who clad himself in a garment made ofsuforcoarse wool as an indication of having renouncedthe world and of having devoted himself to the re-membrance (zikr) of Allah (SWT). For some, theterm Sufi is associated with the Greek termsophia

(knowledge; wisdom)orsophis (wise; learned). Aparently, the Islamic Jurists (fuqaha) have concentrated on Islam. The theologians (mutakallimun)have concentrated on iman, and in contemporarytimes the Sufis have concentrated on the ihsan perspective of our deen.

Sufism strives to reach the level ofihsanthrough three steps: (1) To cleanse and purify oneself internally by constantly seeking Allahs forgivness, (2) To be constantly engaged in the remem-

brance (zikr) of Allah (SWT), and (3) To abundansend salutations (durood & salam) on the Prophet(SAW). Ihsan for thesahaba was not restricted tothe theory and practice of the Sufi orders. The imain their hearts was like mountains; yet their effortswere not limited to only lifting themselves up spirtually. They led normal and balanced lives. Theylaughed when it was an occasion to laugh. It is re-

ported that the Prophet (SAW) laughed till one cosee the back of his molars.

Ihsan for the sahaba was a balance betweendeen and duniya. They underwent a process of sel

purification both during the Meccan period as welas during the Medinan period, the former through

passive resistance when faced with persecution, anthe latter through active resistance when required confront the enemy. It was struggle (jihad) allthrough.Jihadin the path of Allah (SWT) is an ingral part of ourdeen and has to be carried on till thend of times. It is absolutely wrong to construejihas terrorism in the name of religion. The times weare living in requiresjihadto be done with theQuran. This was thejihadwhich the Prophet(SAW) did during the Meccan period, and this iswhat we need to do now.

We learn from a hadith that human beings arelike metals. This is interpreted to mean that theirworth is based on the level of theirtaqwa of Allah(SWT) . Analogically, the three levels of faithIslam, iman, and ihsan could be compared with thcoins made of copper, silver, and gold respectivelThe gold coin has more worth than the silver coinand the silver coin is more precious than the coppecoin.

A muhsin or one who reaches the level ofihsahas absolute reliance (tawakkul) on Allah (SWT),and understands that nothing happens to him, good

or bad, except with the will of Allah (SWT). Amuhsin is the one whose heart resonates with thesound ofla ilaha illallah (There is no god exceptAllah). Such people truly enjoy the tranquility ofmind and heart, regardless of what is happening tothem or around them.

The muhsineen are described as those who folow the way (millah) of Ibrahim (AS).Who is bettin faith than one who submits himself wholly to Goacts righteously, and follows the religion of Ibrahthe upright in faith, whom God chose for a

    friend? (al-Nisa, 4:125)

    Youth of Ummah...IONA Youth Program

If I was to sum up the problems of youth? Its simple. Lets be honest. Sex,clothes, celebrities, video games, music, Hollywood, cars, and food. Thats it,

life is revolving around this vicious system created by the shaytan. He is proba-bly in a corner laughing; he doesnt even have to do much because many of our

own youth are promoting this lifestyle. If we dont submit to Allah (SWT), thenwe have submitted for sure to the creation of Allah (SWT), which is always go-

ing to be weak and FINITE. We have created our own idols to worship, whether it be our desires orcelebrities or ourselves.

In a hadith of the Prophet (SAW), he said, Take advantage of five matters before five other mat-

ters: your YOUTH before you become old; and your health before you fall sick; and your richness be-fore you become poor; your free time before you become busy; and your life before your death.

(Narrated by Imam Ahmad)How quickly time is passing by. Yesterday, you may have been a teen and today you are not.

Today you may be in early twenties, but tomorrow, very soon in-shaAllah, you will be in your 30sliving your married life and 40 is right around the corner. The hadith makes a distinction about lifethat we live in general and life as youth because of the importance of this time.

The enthusiasm and energy that you have been blessed with will never again be given to you afterthis age. Young age is a time when desires are more, and the will for action, whether good or bad, isstronger. The mind is rebellious and the temptations of the areShaytan at the maximum. This requires

a special effort for Muslim youth to stay on the straight path. Everything you do today, especially inyour early part of life, will either reap the benefits of thehard work to gain Allahs pleasure or suffer the conse-

quences of your action on the Day of Judgment. Allah(SWT) say in the Quran, On a day when their tongues, their hands, and their feet will bear witness against them asto what they used to do. (Surah Nur, verse 24)

Channel your energy in a positive direction. You canbe at the hukka joints or you can be at an Arabic classlearning the deeper meaning of Quran. The companions ofthe Prophet (SAW) used their energy in the right way. Those who are far away from Islam, you can still make aU-turn. The great companion of Prophet Mohammed

(SAW), Umar bin Khathab (RA), used to have a drinkingproblem, he used to persecute Muslims and wanted to killthe Prophet (SAW). But once the truth came to him, hemade the U-turn. He loved Islam after becoming a Mus-lim, he served Islam till his death. If you are reading thisand you want to change and submit to your creator, andlearn about Islam, do it today, dont delay! May Allah(SWT) bless you.

    Sisters Section

Weve all had intense moments. For me, one such momenthappened while standing on the rooftop of Masjid al-Haram.Above me was only sky, below me, the most beautiful view ofthe Kabaa and an acute sign of Allah (SWT), this life, and thelife to come. I was surrounded by an overwhelming crowdthatexists nowhere else on this earthbut, for me, it could have

been that I was standing completely alone. With Allah (SWT).I brought with me to that rooftop so much heartache, confu-

sion, and doubt. I came with so much weakness, human frailty, and pain. Standing at a crossroads in my life, I brought with mefear of what was to come and hope in what could be. So, as Istood on that roof, I remembered the story of Musa (AS) stand-ing at the Red Sea. His physical eyes saw nothing but a wall ofwater, entrapping him as an army approached; but his spiritualeyes saw only Allah (SWT), and a way out so certain it was as ifhe had already taken it. While the voices of his peoplebereftof trust or hopespoke only of being overtaken, Musa (AS) didnot waiver.

As I stood there, I heard the distant voices warning me ofwhat was to comebut my heart heard only, Inna maiya rabee

sa yahdeenTruly my Lord is with me, He will guide methrough. (Quran, 26:62)But seeing through the illusions of hardship, confusion and

pain that surround us can only happen when we allow our heartto focus. The foundation of Islam is tawheed (Oneness). Buttawheed is not just about saying that God is One. It is so muchdeeper. It is about the Oneness of purpose, of fear, of worship,of ultimate love for God. It is the oneness of vision and focus. Itis to direct ones sight on one singular point, allowing every-thing else to fall into place.

One of the most beautiful traditions of the Prophet (SAW)captures this concept perfectly. He (SAW) said, Whoevermakes the Hereafter his preoccupation, then Allah places free-dom from want in his heart, gathers his affairs, and dunya

(worldly life) comes to him despite being reluctant to do so. Andwhoever makes dunya his preoccupation, then Allah places hispoverty in front of his eyes, make his affairs scattered, and noth-ing of the dunya comes to him except that which has been de-creed for him. [At-Tirmidhi]

If youve ever seen a magic eye picture, you can see awonderful metaphor of this truth. At first glance, the picturelooks like nothing but a collection of shapes, with no order or

purpose. But if you start by bringing the picture right up to yourface, focusing your eye on one singular point, as you move the

picture slowly away from your face, the picture suddenly be-comes clear. But, as soon as you take your eyes off that singular

point of focus, the picture disappears and again becomes nothingbut a sea of shapes.

In the same way, the more we focus on the dunya, the moreour matters become scattered. The more we run after the dunya, the more it runs away from us. The more we chase wealth, ironi-

cally, the morepoverty we feel.If money is thefocus, you willfind that no mat-ter how muchmoney youhave, you willalways fear los-ing it. This pre-occupation is

poverty itself. That is why theProphet (SAW)says about such people that poverty is always in front of theireyes. That is all they see. No matter how much they have, thereis no contentment, only greed for more and fear of loss. But, forthe ones who focus on Allah (SWT), the dunya comes to them, and Allah (SWT) puts contentment in their hearts. Even if theyhave less, they feel rich, and are more willing to give from thatwealth.

And when such people feel trapped by life, by financialhardship, by pain, by loneliness, by fear, by heartbreak, or sad-ness, all they have to do is turn to Allah (SWT), and He alwaysmakes a way out for them. Know that this is not some feel-goodtheory. It is a promise. A promise made by Allah (SWT) Him-self, who says in the Quran:

And for those who fear Allah, He (ever) prepares a wayout, and He provides for him from (sources) he never couldimagine. And if any one puts his trust in Allah, sufficient is(Allah) for him (65:2-3)

Allah (SWT) is sufficient for them. Allah (SWT) is enough. For those who make Allah (SWT) their primary concern, there isonly peace, because whatever happens to them in this life it is

good and accepted as the will of Allah (SWT). Imagine havingonly good in your life. That is the state of this type of believer,as the Prophet (SAW) says, Wondrous are the believers af-fairs. For him there is good in all his affairs, and this is so onlyfor the believer. When something pleasing happens to him, he isgrateful, and that is good for him; and when something displeas-ing happens to him, he is enduring (has sabr), and that is goodfor him. [Muslim]

And so in the heart of such a believer is a sort of paradise. That is the paradise that Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah (SWT) havemercy on his soul, spoke of when he said: Truly, there is aHeaven in this world, [and] whoever does not enter it, will notenter the Heaven of the next world.

And in that heaven, complete peace is not something of a

moment. It is a state, eternal.

Today, although there is noshirkamong Muslims in terms of idol worship, but it will not be wrong to say that many if not mostMuslims have made materialism their idol. Allah (SWT) knows the capacities and capabilities of each one of us. We are told tohave the taqwa of Allah (SWT) as much as we possibly can. So be mindful of God as best as you can; and listen, and obey;and spend in charity: it is for your own good. Those who guard themselves against their own greed will surely prosper. (al-

Hidden under the Tongue The Story of Two Slaves

Once a king purchased two slaves. One of them was very handsome while the other was very ugly. The king asked the handsome slave to go and take a bath. While he was away, the king turned to the otherslave and said, "Your companion has given a very bad account of you, he said that you are a thief and of badcharacter. Is this correct?"

The slave replied that his companion was a handsome person, and his exterior beauty must be reflected

by inward beauty as well. He could not believe that such a beautiful man could tell a lie. He therefore said,"If my companion has a bad opinion about me, there must certainly be something wrong with me. I am afraidhe must be correct."

The king observed that beauty was only an Allah-given gift, and it did not follow that a person who had ahandsome face had a pure heart as well.

The king was greatly impressed with the character and intelligence of this slave. In the meantime, thefirst slave had returned from his bath.

The king sent the second slave (i.e. the ugly slave to have a bath) and in his absence told the handsomeslave that his fellow slave had given a bad account of him. On hearing this, the slave burst into invectivesagainst his companion and said that he was a rascal and a liar.

The king thus came to the conclusion that the slave with a beautiful face had no inner worth while theslave with an ugly face had much inner worth.

The moral of the story is that beauty is only skin deep. All that glitters is not gold. "Every man is hiddenunder his own tongue." The tongue reveals the inner intelligence as well as inner vileness . "The safety of aman lies in holding his tongue."

Rasulullaah (SAW) said, " He who is silent is successful!"
