Family Concerts The BSO’s Family Concert Series provides engaging, age-appropriate, educational orchestral concert experiences especially for children ages 3–8 and their families. BSO Family Concerts are designed to build connection to the orchestra, orchestral music, the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras, and Symphony Hall. The BSO offers three Family Concerts per year, one of which is performed by the BSO and conducted by Germeshausen Youth and Family Concerts Conductor Thomas Wilkins, the other two of which are performed by the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras (BYSO), as part of a larger organizational partnership.

Pre-concert activities, including an instrument playground and instrument demonstrations, take place from:

• 10:30–11:30am on Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras performance dates (November 16, April 26)

• 9–10am on the March 1 BSO performance date (due to concert time proximity, there will be no pre-concert activities before the 12noon BSO Family Concert on that date)

Days in the Arts at Tanglewood (DARTS)The Days in the Arts (DARTS) program is a summer residential program near Tanglewood that provides middle school students with a high-quality arts immersion experience, allowing each student to engage with and create art with their peers in a positive, non-judgmental environment. The program unites students from urban, suburban and rural communities, seeking to break down barriers and stereotypes by creating a community of mutual respect and understanding. The DARTS philosophy is founded on fostering respect for and interest in each person’s diversity, interests, talents, and individuality. DARTS strives to provide an environment in which students are exposed to the arts and to people from a wide range of backgrounds.

Each summer since 1968 in the Berkshires of Massachusetts, the BSO operates Days in the Arts residential education program that invites middle school students from across Massachusetts to gather together to explore the arts. DARTS offers students the opportunity to spend five of their summer days immersed in the arts, engaged in intensive arts workshops and to experience a variety of partner cultural organizations throughout the Berkshires.

DARTS serves 400 middle students each summer during eight one-week sessions. Arts workshops are offered in Instrumental Music, Vocal Music, Theatre, Dance and Visual Art and are taught by experienced arts educators who are also professionals in their own field. Each session convenes students from urban, suburban and rural communities with the intent to create a single community through the arts. While there is a fee attached to the experience, need-based financial assistance is available for families; no student is turned away from DARTS due to an inability to pay. A DARTS reunion is held the following spring at Symphony Hall in Boston following the BSO Family Concert to sustain the community and to share the BSO experience with participating families in Boston.

The 2014 DARTS season will take place from June 23–August 15, 2014. Rising 6th, 7th and 8th grade students from across Massachusetts are eligible. For more information regarding the DARTS application process, visit bso.org/childrenandfamilies.

BSO Teen CouncilThe BSO Teen Council is a mentorship and community service program that empowers high school student musicians to be lifelong orchestral music advocates through participation in the education and community engagement programs of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Through a variety of activities, students will develop leadership skills, build personal relationships with BSO musicians and staff members, and learn how to positively impact their schools and communities through music performance and community engagement. Through this program, students will become fully integrated into the Boston Symphony Orchestra family and develop greater ownership of orchestral music, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and Symphony Hall. Each year, up to 15 students will be chosen through a competitive application and interview process. Teen Council members will receive community service credit and an honorarium for their participation.

Are you a high school musician interested in being a part of the BSO Teen Council? Visit the following page for an application form: bso.org/youngmusicians.

Pre- and Post-Youth Concert BSO Musician DemonstrationsPrior to and following each BSO Youth Concert, a limited number of instrument demonstrations led by BSO musicians will be offered to attending school groups of 100 or less individuals. The demonstrations are intended to build personal connections between participating school groups and BSO musicians, offering an opportunity for students to hear directly from a BSO musician on the day of the Youth Concert performance.

• Pre-concert demonstrations will take place from 9:15am to 9:45am (available for schools attending the 10am concerts)

• Post-concert demonstrations will take place from 1:10pm to 1:40pm (available for schools attending the 11:50am concerts)

Please note that there is very limited space for these demonstrations. As such, requests will be honored on a first come, first served basis.

Application is required for consideration. Please download an application here: bso.org/schoolsandeducators.

BSO Classroom Connections ProgramThe BSO Classroom Connections program provides elementary school students with high quality musical performances that offer participating students the opportunity to engage with a range of BSO musicians who the students see onstage during a BSO Youth Concert at Symphony Hall. Taking the form of ensemble performances in informal settings for small groups, the BSO Classroom Connections program creates meaningful interactive experiences for students and musicians that will cultivate students’ knowledge and relationship with orchestral music and BSO players.

A limited number of BSO Classroom Connections visits are available by competitive application to elementary school classrooms to serve as an additional resource for music specialists and general classroom teachers in their efforts to incorporate orchestral music into their schools. The BSO Classroom Connections program partners with a limited number of elementary school classrooms each season between January and May to present a free chamber ensemble performance in support of the current curriculum. Applications will be weighed against each other based on consideration of geographic equity and the fit between available ensembles and the curricular needs of applying classrooms. Performances will be offered to schools who are committed to attending the 2014 Youth Concerts at Symphony Hall, and will offer either a concert preparation or extension opportunity for schools, based on the full orchestra concert experience.

For more information, a list of program participation requirements, and to download an application for participation, visit bso.org/schoolsandeducators.

Symposium Series for EducatorsThe Symposium Series for Music Educators serves as a resource for music educators from around the Greater Boston Area, offering the opportunity to learn instrumental methods and techniques from BSO musicians in a focused workshop setting. The Series provides three free opportunities each year (including a conducting workshop with Thomas Wilkins) for teachers and BSO musicians to interact directly in a learning atmosphere of mutual respect and professionalism, affording BSO Players the opportunity to serve as a direct resource for the advancement of quality music education in New England schools, and building an informal network of support and collaboration among area teachers from a wide variety of districts and backgrounds.

The Symposium Series has been designed to put music educators in direct connection with BSO Musicians, allowing BSO Players to “unlock the secrets” of aspects of their instruments or musical technique for their music educator attendees. Sessions often include information regarding hints and tricks of their instrument family for younger players as well as pedagogical practices and learnings and perspectives from the point of view of a professional musician. Sessions are also designed with the intent of bringing music educators from various backgrounds together in a supportive and interactive setting at Symphony Hall, allowing them to connect with each other and to build their ownership of the “behind the scenes” experience of the BSO.

Community Chamber ConcertsBSO Community Chamber Concerts provide high-quality, relevant and engaging free chamber music concerts performed by BSO musicians in greater Boston area communities limited in access to the BSO by distance or economics. Community Chamber Concerts build personal connections to the BSO and orchestral music, allowing community members to become more deeply engaged with the BSO over time. Each concert program lasts approximately one hour and is followed by a coffee and dessert reception for the audience and musicians.

The 2013–2014 Community Chamber Concert season will include an “artistic exchange” element before three of the ten total Community Chamber Concert performances. These three communities are: Roxbury, Lynn, and Lowell. At each of these three community locations, an ensemble of community musicians will be featured in performance from 2:30pm–2:45pm, prior to the BSO musicians’ 3pm performance. This is the second year of this expanded effort which is intended to allow the concert afternoon to represent an “exchange” of performances between the BSO and the community, and to highlight the musical strengths and programs of each community.

The specific musical works to be discussed are posted at bso.org 3–4 weeks before each session. No prior musical training or attendance at any previous session is required.

For a list of program dates and more information, please visit bso.org/bso101.

UnderScore FridaysThe UnderScore Friday Series offers a variation on the traditional BSO concert performance. Members of the BSO introduce the concerts from the stage. During the 2013–14 season, each concert will feature an additional unique element, from multi-media to remarks from the conductor. In addition, several concerts within the series are shorter in duration than a standard performance.

For concert listings, please visit bso.org/subscriptions.

New this Season: BSO “Insights” Focus on Britten and BeethovenIn conjunction with its performances of Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem in November and the five Beethoven piano concertos featuring Yefim Bronfman under Christoph von Dohnányi’s direction in March, the BSO is pleased to offer—in collaboration with local institutions including Harvard University, the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the New England Conservatory of Music—two “Insights” series investigating, through film presentations, lectures, and additional musical performances, the cultural context in which these works were composed, each series will be further enhanced by in-depth video podcasts on bso.org. “Britten’s War Requiem: Music and Pacifism” will focus on the broader theme of music and pacifism. “The Five Beethoven Piano Concertos: Beethoven and the Piano” will focus on that composer’s remarkable pianistic legacy as composer, performer, and improviser. Full details may be found at bso.org.
