Saving the SS United StatesMaintenance could cost $1M each year Group envisions dining and lodging‘It’s one of the most extraordinary ... opportunities right now,’ says director
The race is on to save theSS United States, an his-toric ocean liner currentlydocked in disrepair on theDelaware River in SouthPhiladelphia.
“The cost of maintain-ing the ship — and when Isay ‘maintaining,’ I justmean keeping it dockedand in-shored and safeand sound — is expen-sive,” said Susan Gibbs, di-rector of the SS UnitedStates Conservancy, whichin 2011 purchased theship.
The conservancy’s de-sired vision encompassesmixed-use developmentwith a dedicated museumand a combination of re-tail, dining and lodging. But the nonprofit is find-ing that after the cost ofmaintenance — about $1million each year — it’sdifficult to keep the proj-ect afloat.
“We feel that’s alsowhy it’s one of the most, ifnot the most, extraordi-nary redevelopment andpreservation opportuni-ties in the country rightnow, because the ship wasso iconic — not unlike theStatue of Liberty and theseother truly national at-tractions,” Gibbs said.
The conservancy isrolling out one lastfundraising push spear-headed by a five-part doc-umentary, “Made in theUnited States,” whose on-line release began last
week. The film dovetailswith the organization’s so-cial media campaign invit-ing donors to uploadphotos and stories to aninteractive online blue-print of the ship.
“It’s been so fascinat-
ing to see people’s photo-graphs, testimonials andmessages because the shipstill really speaks to peo-ple,” Gibbs said.
PersonalconnectionGibbs has a special connec-tion with the SS UnitedStates — her grandfatherWilliam Francis Gibbs de-signed it.
“It really was a lifelongobsession of his, ever sincehe was a little boy inPhiladelphia and saw thelaunching of a ship in theCramp Shipyard on the
Delaware River when hewas 8 years old,” she said.
Gibbs said her grandfa-ther first sketched the shipnearly 40 years before itwas constructed.
“He actually went toHarvard and was kickedout because he spent somuch time sketchingships,” she said. “It was alifelong love affair and theculmination of his careeras a self-taught Marine en-gineer and naval architect.” Alex Wigglesworth
History in brief
The SS United States wasconstructed in 1952 as apartnership between pri-vate shipping companyUnited States Lines andthe U.S. Navy. Built as a passenger linerthat could be quickly andstealthily converted to awartime troopship, theSS United States smashedtransatlantic speedrecords during itsmaiden voyage and usedmore aluminum thanany other constructionproject of the era.The vessel was sold to aprivate company in 1964and continued its rise tothe status of a luxurycruise ship patronized bycelebrities and heads ofstate, including John F.Kennedy Jr. The SS United States wastaken out of service in1969. The Maritime Ad-ministration auctionedmuch of its furniture, andin 1996 the liner wastowed to its currenthome in South Philadel-phia.

Casino offer comes at goldentime as school budget looms
As SuperintendentWilliam R. Hite Jr. pre-pares to unveil his revisedplan to close 37 district-run schools in an effort tofill the estimated $200million deficit, represen-tatives from a proposedcasino says it would shareits wealth.
Penn National Gaming,Inc., the only casino devel-oper to proposed a part-nership with the city, saysit would guarantee $2 mil-lion per year after its firstyear of operation to helpfund city schools and itspension fund.
Spokeswoman KarenBailey said the companyexpects to reach $12 mil-lion in year eight.Eventually the city wouldreceive $20 million annu-ally as the casino matures,Bailey said.
Reading-based PennNational, which alreadyoperates a casino in cen-tral Pennsylvania, understate law, cannot own twocasino licenses simultane-ously. It is limited to aone-third ownership in asecond casino.
So the company creat-ed a nonprofit corpora-tion that would direct
two-thirds of the cashflow to the city’s pensionand education systems.
“That’s obviously twoareas of greatest need inthe city as it relates tolong-term funding,” shesaid.”
The PennsylvaniaGaming Control Boardwon’t decide on whichcompany will receive thesecond license yet.
Hite has said the dis-trict is facing a $1.3 bil-lion deficit over five years. He claims the districtwould save about $28 mil-lion yearly and $140 mil-lion a year over five yearsif the 37 schools closed. But this does not includerelocation costs of an esti-mated 17,000 students.

Half a lifetime ago, artistYoko Ono lay in anAmsterdam hotel bed withhusband John Lennon, staging a weeklong “bed-in” for peace and feelingthey were very alone intheir activism.
Today, Ono, whose ownenergy for campaigninghas never tired, sees aworld full of activists, maintaining her energyand faith in humanity.
“When John and I didthe bed-in, not many peo-ple were with us. But nowthere are so many ac-tivists, I don’t know any-one who is not an activist,”she told Reuters in an in-terview in Berlin yester-day, her 80th birthday.
“Even the corporations— John always used to saythe corporations need tobe with us. ... Corporationsnow say 10 to 20 percentof their profits will go tosuch and such charity. They have to do that al-most for people to feelgood about it.”
The late Beatle andOno’s 1969 bed-in toprotest against theVietnam War was repeat-ed in Montreal, Canada.Press attention was huge, but much of it was mock-ing.
Ono, who gave a sold-out concert in Berlin onSunday alongside theirson Sean Lennon thatclosed with the anthem

To illustrate the basic mystery of darkmatter, imagine taking a Chihuahuato the veterinarian. When it’s time tobe weighed, instead of the scale read-ing 10 pounds, it reads 100 pounds.
Doctors are shocked when their tools find thedog’s body is completely normal and doesn’taccount for the extra phantom weight. Lateryou give your wonder dog a bath. After heav-ing the purse-sized furry anomaly into a fulltub, all of the water spills on the floor as if theentire container is filled, yet you see plenty ofempty space.
Similarly, galaxies behave as if they haveabout 10 times more mass than what’s visible.Second, galaxies appear to hover within alarger beach ball-shaped cloud of invisiblematter, undetectable except through gravity. The source and identity of dark matter is un-known. The remaining 70 percent of the uni-verse is dark energy. In 1998 the Hubble SpaceTelescope discovered an unknown force accel-erating galaxies away from one another anddriving the universe to expand faster. NASA’sastrophysics page summarizes proven knowl-
edge: “We know how much dark energy thereis because we know how it affects theUniverse’s expansion. Other than that, it is acomplete mystery.” There are many promis-ing candidates for dark matter/energy, each
with flaws and bene-fits. Still, no clearfront-runner exists. The search is on toidentify dark matterand energy likely sur-rounding and passingthrough you rightnow. Experimentersaround the worldsearch for answers us-ing both laboratoriesdeep undergroundand particle accelera-tors. Meanwhile, tele-scopes study distances
from individual galaxies to the structure ofthe whole universe.
Solutions will forever change humans’views of reality and shed light on thelife cycle of the universe, beginningand end included. As 1800s Germanphilosopher Friedrich Nietzsche
wrote, “If you gaze long into an abyss, theabyss will gaze back into you.”

The universe is more than galaxies, stars, planets and empty space. Whatwe see as “everything” is less than 5percent of the total universe. The re-maining 95 percent is dark matter anddark energy. The origins and identityof both are unknown.
Scientists employ the use of technology such
as satellites and telescopes to try to detect
dark matter in both direct and indirect ways.
There are manypromisingcandidates for darkmatter, eachwith flaws and benefits.

Is an MFA in creative writing worththe cost? George Saunders says ‘yes’
These days GeorgeSaunders’ talentsare more in-de-mand than perhaps
any other Americanwriter: His latest collec-tion of short stories,“Tenth of December,” re-cently appeared on thecover of the New YorkTimes Magazine with theheadline, “GeorgeSaunders Has Written theBest Book You’ll Read ThisYear.” Heady times.
But back in the ’80s,Saunders found himselfout of work with an MFAin creative writing — andlooking straight into a pileof looming debt. Thesedays he teaches atSyracuse University — inthe very same MFA pro-
gram he once attended. And, over the years, hehas developed more thana few insights into thetrue value of post-gradu-ate education.
Do your students everstruggle with perceptionsthat an MFA in creativewriting isn’t practical? Didyou struggle with this whenyou were a student? Some of them do, sure. One of the most satisfyingthings is when a familythat has been skepticalcomes to our third-yeargraduation event, hearstheir child read from hisor her work and is con-verted. Personally, I neverfelt that way, no. When Igot into the Syracuse pro-
gram I was working as agroundsman, so being inan MFA program was a bigstep up.
Do you feel that nationalconversations about highereducation are too focusedon job preparation? It seems to me that it is,yes — although maybethat’s not surprising, giv-en the scary job marketand the tricky and shame-ful way that a studentloan has basically mor-phed from a high-mindedgovernment program de-signed to provide civicbenefit, into, well, a cred-it card [with] high-inter-est rates and mercilesspayback conditions.Students now are so
weighed down with thisdebt — which seems tome is a kind of welfareprogram that benefits thebanks and the collegesbut not the student —that there is, of course, pressure on them to start
paying it back… and notgo loafing around thedesert with a backpackand a copy of “On theRoad.”
The ‘Tenth of December’ author reflects on what the advanced degree means for you New dimension
Is there value in acreative writing MFAbeyond becoming abetter writer?
Well, I’d argue that thetask of working throughpieces of fiction orpoems helps us becomenot only better writers, but better people. Writ-ing somehow tends tomove us from a positionof one-dimensional cer-tainty about a topic to amore ambiguous or evenconfused state — andthat is mind-enlarging.On a more pragmaticlevel, I think the MFA de-gree has made it easierfor our grads to getteaching jobs. This didn’tused to be true, but in-creasingly it seems so.
Bruce [email protected]
“Working through pieces of fiction or
poems helps us become not only better writers,
but better people,” Saunders says.

Is graduate school theright thing right now?
Adding those extra letters after your title can give you a career boost But plan ahead to how you’ll pay it off
Money is one of thefirst things thatcomes to mindwhen one consid-
ers applying to a graduateprogram, let alone goinginto one. But what is the re-turn on your investment? Itdepends on you.
As a coach and trainerfor creative professionals,Dave Mowers says whenstarting out in graduatestudy, “You’ll be surround-ed by opportunity, newand fascinating people, lofty ideas, incredible de-mands and intense feed-back and attention.” Canyou make it pay off?Mowers lays out what toknow before committingthe time and money.
Why should we think
about grad school rightnow? There are signs of econom-ic recovery. We have manyindustries, and advancedtraining and education arekey to the innovationmovements across theboard. Are there commonmistakes people makewhen deciding to apply orchoosing a school? The No. 1 mistake is the as-sumption that any specificprogram will change yourlife and solve financialproblems. People’s secondmistake is taking an initialrejection as a stopper. Butthe biggest mistake is tak-ing on the cost without arealistic plan for managingfinances after the programis complete.
Five tips
What to remember whentaking the next steps:
Research is free. Spendtime online with schoolsthat interest you, but alsovisit open houses.Learning about a schoolis the first step to learn-ing from the school.
Applying is not committing.Applications aren’tcheap, but they’re a smallinvestment compared tothe cost of attending aschool. Find out whatyou need to succeed andtake it from there. Youdon’t have to accept.
Keep an open mind.
Sure, there is always aprogram ranked No. 1,but there are also otherschools that may offeryou better options forplacement upon gradua-tion.
Ask for it. Graduateschools are competingfor your business. Makesure you are meetingface-to-face with a com-mitted team of peoplewho will help you get theexperience you want.
What happens after?Business is still businesswhen you finish, and itcomes down to who youknow. Graduate schoolshould provide you witha network that will moveyou toward your profes-sional goal.
Career coach Dave Mowers says you’ll be surrounded by
opportunity and “lofty ideas” at grad school.
Is enrolling in continuingstudies classes a goodalternative to immersingyourself in grad school fulltime?Continuing studies pro-grams offer an amazingroute to achieving your ca-reer goals. Programs likethis are staffed by profes-sionals working in the
field. Most of them partici-pate because they are in-terested in cutting-edgedevelopment, staying cur-rent with thought leader-ship in their industry andsharing a passion for theirdiscipline or work.

Bonnie Kerrigan Snydergraduated from Harvard in1987 and was thrown intoa sinking economy — anda job market not terriblyinterested in English ma-jors. Today she’s a familycollege consultant, and shesees her clients strugglingwith the same obstaclesshe ran into post-gradua-tion — only much worse.
Her latest book, “TheUnemployed CollegeGraduate’s Survival Guide:How to Get Your LifeTogether, Deal with Debt, and Find a Job AfterCollege,” mines some ofthe wisdom she picked upin the ’80s and appropri-ates it for an even bleakerjob market.

Kerrigan’s guide beginswith a strong dose of emo-tional reassurance for post-grads feeling let down bytheir job status and judgedby their parents.
“In my experience, thekids are more aware of the
realities than the parentsare. Parents are having ahard time adjusting theirexpectations,” says Snyder.“There is a way Americanshave approached collegefor generations: Choose aschool first, discover whatyou’re interested in whileyou’re in school and start
thinking about a job inyour senior year. Thestakes are so much higherfor these kids, and we needto start thinking about thepayoff of this investment alot sooner.”
The newrealitiesIn her latest book, familycollege consultant BonnieKerrigan Snyder dissectsthe outdated wisdom ofAmerican highereducation. Here is just oneexample:
Outdated thinking: A col-lege degree ensures finan-cial security. The new reality: Collegecan be a risky financial in-vestment, and that risk
needs to be hedged. Afamily only has so muchmoney to help launch achild into the workforce.Diverting some of thoseresources toward a homeor starting a business is abetter strategy.

Twitter was ablaze overMindy McCready’s tragicsuicide on Sunday. Thetroubled 37-year-old coun-try singer shot herself inthe same spot her long-time boyfriend, record pro-ducer David Wilson, killedhimself a month earlier. But after reports emergedthat McCready killed thefamily dog before turningthe gun on herself, sympa-thy turned to anger — peo-ple seemed to be muchmore upset that she shother dog rather than beingin such a dark place thatshe would leave behindher two young children,Zander, 6, and Zayne, 9months old. A sampling:
@ChasinCarolineSeriously? Mindy #McCreadykilled her dog before shekilled herself? Now that’scruel!
@wwtdd the fact thatmindy mccready killed herdog first makes me glad shesdead
@ChristopherFTL Mindy
McCready shot and killed herdog before turning the gunon herself. My sympathy me-ter just went to zero afterreading this.
As a huge animal lover, I
get the outrage. But asmurder/suicides go, a dogis better than, God forbid,a child. Of course, Twitteris but a small sampling ofwhat we’re all thinking, but isn’t it fascinating that
the world decided to pickup on this aspect of thetragedy rather than the hu-man one — that two littlechildren are going to bescarred for life and willgrow up with no mother?

I was fortunate enough to at-tend the grand opening of the newEdenPURE® factory in North Can-ton, Ohio. The new plant broughthundreds of new jobs back to Ohioand reversed the common practiceof sending Midwest manufacturingjobs to China. Now, EdenPURE®
continues to ramp up productionfor the coming winter with excitingnew models and hundreds of newemployees as this Made in Ameri-ca success story continues to grow.
American Labor, AmericanQuality
With over 3 million portableheaters sold EdenPURE® is thebest selling portable infrared heat-ing system in North America. However, like any classic, Eden-PURE® has dozens of would-becompetitors who create Asiancopies at low prices using cheap, foreign labor. Don’t be fooled bythese imitations. Look for theEdenPURE® logo and the Made inNorth Canton, Ohio stamp. Savelike millions of others on yourheating bills and say “NO” tocheap foreign imitators.
Save up to 49% on 2013 Eden-PURE®s
Now readers can save up to49% ($229 the largest savings everon new EdenPURE®s). Eden-PURE® is not just the best-sellingportable heating system in NorthAmerica. I love the EdenPURE®
heater and that’s why I keep one inmy home for those extra chillyevenings. And now is the perfecttime to save like never before onour expanded 2013 EdenPURE®
line made in our brand new NorthCanton, Ohio facility.
With two models EdenPURE®
can meet all of your heating re-quirements 365 days a year.
Stay Comfortable 365 Days aYear
“Never be cold again” is theEdenPURE® promise. EdenPURE®
provides you insurance against thecold all year long. Stay comfort-able on those unseasonably chillyevenings no matter the season. Ilive in California but believe me itgets cold at night. Keep your ex-pensive furnace turned down untilit’s absolutely necessary. And ifwe are fortunate enough to experi-ence a mild winter as many of usdid in the Midwest last year, youkeep your furnace off all seasonand save even bigger.
New, More Efficient ModelsThe engineers at EdenPURE®
listened to their millions of cus-tomers and somehow managed toimprove their “original” portableheater. Through old fashionedAmerican ingenuity the new Eden-PURE® line is more efficient tosave you even more money.
The EdenPURE® PersonalHeater now heats a larger area, anincrease from 350 square feet to500 square feet. That’s a 30% in-crease in efficiency! And Eden-PURE® is proud to introduce the2013 Model 750. The new Model750 is perfect for larger areas andheats up to 750 square feet. Butthe best thing about the Model 750is the price. We priced the Model750 at only $50 above the PersonalHeater. This means you receive a33% increase in performance foronly $50. That’s American engi-neering at its best!
The EdenPURE® can cut yourheating bills and pay for itself in amatter of weeks, and then startputting a great deal of extra money
in your pocket after that.Super Safe Infrared HeatNow remember, a major cause
of residential fires in the UnitedStates is carelessness and faultyportable heaters. Fire and safetyprofessional, Captain Mike Horn-by, appreciates the safety featuresthe EdenPURE® offers. The Eden-PURE® has no exposed heating el-ements that can cause a fire. And aredundant home protection systemthat simply shuts the EdenPURE®
down if it senses danger. That’swhy grandparents and parents lovethe EdenPURE®.
The outside of the EdenPURE®
only gets warm to the touch so thatit will not burn children or pets. And your pet may be just like mydog who has reserved a favoritespot near the EdenPURE®. Yousee the EdenPURE® uses infraredheat. And just as pets enjoy bask-ing in a beam of sunlight they tryto stay close to EdenPURE®’s“bone-warming” infrared heat.
The Health Secret is in theCopper
EdenFLOW™ technology usescopper heating chambers to takethe energy provided by our specialSYLVANIA infrared bulbs anddistribute our famous soft heatevenly throughout the room.
Now our copper isn’t ordinary. It’s 99.9% pure antimicrobial cop-per from an over 150 year oldAmerican owned company in Penn-sylvania. So your EdenPURE®
heater is continuously pushing soft, healthy, infrared heat throughoutyour room.

When young idols are your museTeddy Wayne gives a sly peek behind the velvet rope of a Bieber-esque star in
his new novel, ‘The Love Song of Jonny Valentine’ On striking a serious chord
Meet JonnyValentine, an 11-year-old pop starwho worries
about his “chub,” hittingpuberty and careerlongevity. In the new book“The Love Song of JonnyValentine,” author TeddyWayne gives us a sly peekbehind the velvet rope (lit-erally) of a young pop star.Sort of inspired by JustinBieber, the book delightsin mocking an Americansociety obsessed with nu-bile stars. But it also strikesserious chords, examiningwhat that obsession doesto the pint-sized prosthemselves. Some seriousmoments even eerily paral-lel Bieber news stories af-ter Wayne wrote the book, like violent threats and amarijuana scandal. Wayne, who just turned 34, talkedto Metro about preppingthrough celeb glossies and
guitar strums.Valentine is based on JustinBieber. How many front-row Justin Bieber concertseats did you buy toresearch?I ended up not going toany. I didn’t want to be toobeholden to the reality ofBieber concerts. I didwatch his documentaryfilm. It’s entertaining; it’s
his own official documen-tary but he’s savvier andsmarter about his imagethan you’d think, than thenormal teen pop star. Iwatched a lot of amateur[YouTube] concert footage.Jonny struggles with a fewchallenges throughout thebook, such as trying to findhis father and decidingwhether to go to a regular
school. Some authors saythey feel like theircharacters lead them — didyou have a good idea of theending, or did you feel likeJonny surprised you?I had a general idea ofwhere I wanted to go, butone thing I found withwriting is I do a lot of ven-triloquism. This novel andthe previous novel areboth in voices very unlikemy own. I do a lot of hu-mor writing for magazinesand newspapers that’s also“ventriloquified,” othercharacters. When I get intoanother character’s voice, Istart thinking about thischaracter, and it does leadme to their decisions andthoughts. How does society get to aplace where we idolize 11-year-olds?We hold them up as theseparagons of innocence. …And then inevitably, they
fail us — because it’s im-possible to stay innocentforever — and once theydo, we punish them severe-ly. We’re cruel about it. Thechild celebrities, whenthey age, often rebelagainst their own image ofinnocence. They sexualizethemselves or glorify theirdrug use.You wrote lyrics to some ofthe songs in the book, like“RSVP (To My Heart)” and“Guys vs. Girls.” Do youhave any secret dreams tomove over from writing tomusic? No record labels have comecalling yet. I’m a mediocreguitarist and singer. Iwould sit at my desk with aguitar on my lap and startthinking of melodies. Itwas fun to do, but I think Ishould not quit my day job.
Alison [email protected]
CHRISTINE MLADIC
Wayne
How did youget the idea forthe book? There wasn’t really a“eureka” moment. I’dbeen tutoring kids inBrooklyn once aweek, and at thesame time I’d beenworking on a novelthat was goingnowhere. One time, Isaw one of the girlsreading Miley Cyrus’book, “Miles to Go,”and it must havelanded in mysubconscious becausea week later, a friendasked if I had anyideas. I said, “Howabout we parodythese teen pop starbiographies?” Anhour later, I realizedif I treated this withmore gravity it couldmake a more serious novel.

Making the leapfrom crib to bedEasing your child throughthe transition from sleep-ing in a crib to a new beddoesn’t need to be a night-mare. Child sleep consult-ant Amy Lage has made acareer out of helping fam-ilies best approach thiscrucial moment in a tod-dler’s life. If your childcannot stay in a crib safelyany longer (for example,
your little monkey is mak-ing a great escape everynight ) or is asking for atoddler bed, it might betime for Lage’s advice.
Why is the transition fromcrib to bed so important? We want to make sure thatthe entire family is gettingas much sleep as possible, and that your children are
well-rested. To avoid thosemiddle-of-the-night wake-ups, it’s important to setthe tone and do it right thefirst time. It keeps every-body on track. Your suggestion of letting achild pick new sheets or abedframe is interesting. Dokids find that idea exciting? Yes — children are alwaysa little nervous about thechange. This makes themfeel in control of the situa-tion, which is so importantfor toddlers. They are so of-ten grasping for control intheir lives. Can older kids help too? Many children want boththe privileges andresponsibilities that theirsiblings have. Absolutely, especially if thesibling is a great sleeper. They can talk up the newbed and how exciting the
change will be. Havingthem get the younger sib-ling excited will help. What sparked your interestin this? Did you have trou-ble with your own children? I have a 2-year-old and a 2-month-old. The older oneis actually still in her crib, and will stay until she asksto switch. In the sleep com-munity, we really think it’simportant to keep childrenin their crib until they arereally ready. I’m a big be-liever in waiting until 3 ifyou can.

At 3, you can reasonwith them. Before that, most kids really can’tcomprehend guidelinesor why it is importantto follow directions.Until they can under-stand and recognizeboundaries, it is somuch easier to keepthem in the crib wherethey can have the bestsleep.

Ways to makesure your newjob doesn’t takeover your life3Being the new kid in theoffice also coincides withbeing the new kid on theblock, so it is especially im-portant that you don’t letyour work take over yourentire life. It’s not good foryour job and it’s not goodfor you.
Julie Chandler, an exec-utive with staffing firmRobert Half International, says that work-life balanceis one of the most impor-tant facets to performingwell at work. “When I havethat work-life balance, I goin the next day with asmile on my face becauseI’m happy to be back,” shesays. Here are three tips tokeep things balanced:
Take breaksStarting a new job on theright foot means workinghard, but it doesn’t meanthat you can never stepaway from your desk.Being glued to a chair infront of your computer foreight solid hours every sin-
gle day can take its toll. Trytaking regular breaks orask a co-worker to join youfor lunch away from yourdesks. You’d be surprisedat how much of adifference it can make! You’ll return to work feel-ing refreshed and ready toget back to it.
you really need to be read-ing budget reports onSaturday morning or can itwait? Job permitting, try toavoid checking your worke-mails during weekendsand evenings.
Make plans: After a longday at work, it can betempting to slump downon the couch for the rest ofthe evening. A little R&R isnever a bad thing, but it’simportant to break out ofyour work-to-home rou-tine. This means makingplans with friends, goingout after work and takingin local attractions. Put life back into yourwork-life balance and ex-perience your city.

Graduate programs that al-low students to take an in-terdisciplinary approachare cropping up at univer-sities across the country. With an outside-the-boxapproach, an interdiscipli-nary degree allows stu-dents to choose their owncurriculum. Students arewithout the constraints ofwhat a more traditionaldepartment may require. In this way, a student canunify disparate interestsinto a degree that is tai-lored to their aspirations.
Matthew K. Gold is anassociate professor at theM.A. program in LiberalStudies at CUNY'sGraduate Center. He saysthe interdisciplinary pro-gram gives students free-dom. “I think it’s a benefitbecause students can di-rect their study toward
their own personal andprofessional goals. Thatgives students the abilityto shape the degree totheir own desires.”
Students can let theirinterests in, say, fashionand business or sociologyand urban planning cometogether in one degree.
Gold says that theseprograms prepare studentsfor an increasingly com-plex job market, politicalscenario and technologicalenvironment.
“There has been muchconversation about theways in which academicdisciplines are connected,”he says. “The problems ofour world call for multi-disciplinary and interdisci-plinary solutions.”

What is aCoverdellsavingsaccount?Coverdell education sav-ings accounts have neverreally drawn headlines, even when unexpectedlysaved from extinction aspart of Washington’s“fiscal cliff” deal.
Much like the 529 col-lege savings programsthat are familiar to manypeople, Coverdell ESAsare accounts where earn-ings grow tax-free, aslong as withdrawals areused for qualified educa-tion expenses such asbooks, supplies or trans-portation.
Some differenceshave always keptCoverdells out of thelimelight. The biggesthurdle has been thatcontributions could totalno more than $2,000 peryear, as opposed to
$24,000 or more per cou-ple for 529s, dependingon the particular plan.
The advantage toCoverdells is that thefunds can be used for ex-penses at the elementaryand secondary levels, and for special services, none of which arecovered by 529s.
Paul Coverdell, thelate Republican senatorwho championed thefunds, saw them primari-ly as a way to offset pri-vate school tuition. Yetprivate school fees havesky-rocketed, makingthe $110,000 (or$220,000 if filing a jointreturn) income cap onthe accounts generallytoo low for people whoshell out $40,000 a yearfor kindergarten.
For parents of special-needs children, however, the accounts could beuseful. While $2,000 peryear may not sound likea huge amount, it canmake a difference forparents whose childrenmay need special school-ing that is not university-based and for a longerperiod of time. REUTERS

Turbo-charged parents stillrunning their university-aged children’s schedulescould be doing more harmthan good. A study pub-lished Wednesday showsthese students are morelikely to be depressed anddissatisfied with life.
Researcher HollySchiffrin from theUniversity of MaryWashington in Virginiafound so-called helicopterparenting negatively af-fected college students byundermining their need tofeel autonomous and com-petent.
Her study found stu-dents with over-control-ling parents were morelikely to be depressed andless satisfied with their
lives while the number ofhyperparents was increas-ing with economic fearsfueling concerns overyoungsters’ chances of suc-cess.
“The problem is thatthese children are oldenough to look after them-selves, and their parentsare not backing off,”Schiffrin, an associate pro-fessor of psychology, tellsReuters. “It does not allowindependence and thechance to learn from mis-takes.”
Schiffrin’s study, pub-lished in Springer’s Journalof Child and FamilyStudies, was based on anonline survey of 297 U.S.undergraduate students inwhich students described
their mothers’ parentingbehavior and their own au-tonomy and researchersassessed their happinessand satisfaction levels.
The study comes as de-bate rises over how muchparents should run theirchildren’s lives to helpthem succeed.
Schiffrin said the in-
crease in technology hadchanged the involvementof parents in their chil-dren’s college lives as theonce-a-week phone callwas replaced with regulartexting, e-mails and mes-saging.
The competitive mar-ketplace and jostling fortop college slots and the
best jobs has also boostedthe involvement of parentsin college lives.
She said to counteractthis, rising numbers of uni-versities were starting torun parental orientationdays to help encourageparents to give their chil-dren more freedom.REUTERS

Startup helps students make theleap from community college
Education startup Quad Learning aims tobridge the gap between community collegesand four-year institutions Companyestimates that students can obtain bachelor’sdegrees for 35 percent to 40 percent less thanthe cost of a traditional four-year program
Education start-up QuadLearning wants to bridgethe gap between commu-nity colleges and four-yearinstitutions.
Quad Learning’sAmerican Honors programhelps community collegestudents go on to earntheir bachelor’s degrees.Taking the “2+2 ap-proach” (which is commontactic for many in commu-nity college), studentscomplete the first twoyears of their education atcommunity colleges par-ticipating in AmericanHonors and finish at afour-year university.
“Over the past five to 10years, there has been aflood of high-achieving,traditional college age stu-dents to community col-leges,” says CEO PhilBronner. “These studentshave been priced out offour-year college and turnto community college asthe alternative. QuadLearning helps communitycolleges build and scalehonors programs through
a mix of financing anddedicated capabilities. Itenters the market as thedemand for affordablehonors education contin-ues to outstrip supply.”
The costs of higher edu-cation are prohibitivelyhigh for a significant por-tion of Americans, and yetmany community collegesand online education pro-grams do not offer a com-parable alternative. QuadLearning estimated that byparticipating in AmericanHonors, students obtainbachelor’s degrees for 35percent to 40 percent lessthan the cost of a four-yearprogram.
The program promisesto “preserve the social andmotivational scaffolding oftraditional college,” mean-ing it’s good for those stu-dents looking to beimmersed in a communityof learners and educators, rather than just takingclasses online. REUTERS

Hey, nobody enjoys a quarter-back controversy more than Ido. These disputes have notonly lit up the phone lines onmy WIP radio show —
they’ve inspired screaming matches inour taverns and fisticuffs in the stands. There is nothing more polarizing thantwo (or even three) players vying for thetop spot on the Eagles. I live for dramalike that.
But there is no question who willstart for the Eagles. Nick Foles will winthe competition created last week whenKelly re-signed Mike Vick and added hisformer Oregon pal Dennis Dixon. Vick isan injury-prone turnover machine witha dubious attitude. Dixon has been anNFL scrub for five seasons.
On the other hand, Foles has becomeone of the most underrated performersin the recent history of Philadelphiasports. Because he was playing for adoomed coach on a dreadful team, manyfans missed what was unfolding beforetheir cynical eyes. Foles is a good NFLquarterback, with a chance to be muchmore than that.
Behind a putrid offensive line, Folescompleted 61 percent of his passes lastseason, the fifth-best for rookies in NFLhistory. He averaged 243 passing yardsin the seven games he played, third-bestfor rookies in league history. And he isthe only rookie quarterback to throw formore than 60 percent and average morethan 240 yards. The only rookie. Ever.
If Kelly is the offensive genius his cre-dentials suggest, he already knowswhere this so-called competition is head-ing. Kelly is on the record saying “quick, smart decision-making” is his first prior-ity in a quarterback. Vick was hit 170times in 10 games. With basically thesame blockers, Foles was hit 47 times inseven games. And this is supposed to be
Despite Chip Kelly’s best efforts, there is no quarterback controversy. Nick Foles will be theleader of the Eagles’ offense, next season and formany years to come. Mike Vick is nothing morethan an expensive smoke screen. Dennis Dixon isa laughable diversion. Foles is the guy.
NICK FOLESIS STARTER,BET ON IT
a contest?
The one lingering question inthese early weeks of Kelly’stenure is why he bothered tospend $3.5 million on Vick, with another $3.5 million if the
33-year-old makes it through the season. Here’s the answer: Kelly is obsessedwith competition. He loves to see hisplayers fighting for their jobs.
No one understands this approachbetter than Dixon, a journeyman whoserole will be similar to Doug Pederson inthe early days of Donovan McNabb.Dixon already knows the Kelly systemfrom their time together in Oregon andalso realizes that his only hope is to winthe backup job if Vick is released.
Follow the drama in the comingmonths if you must, Philadelphia. Butremember what you read right here inthe middle of February. Nick Foles willbe the Eagles’ starting quarterback in2013. Bet on it.

Eagles ownerpulling fast oneon loyal fansVentriloquism is a lost art.In fact, based on recent de-velopments, the top practitioner appears to bean NFL owner.
You may recognize thename. Jeff Lurie.
The Eagles’ owner is atrue master of speaking outof both sides of his mouth. He says one thing, oftenwith great force, and thenhe does something thatsuggests the opposite. Thelatest example is one of hisbest — even better than his“gold standard” bluster orhis gushing Andy Reid testimonials.
When he finally let Reidgo last month, Lurie spent afew minutes emoting overthe injustice of being anEagles fan. He said, withdeep sorrow, that fans de-served so much more thanthe 4-12 debacle they hadjust experienced. He thencalled them the best fans inthe world and promisedbetter days ahead.
Well, the better days arehere — at least for Lurie.First, he zapped his beloved
patrons with a $10 tickethike — to an average of $93— for no justifiable reason.Lurie is a billionaire, histeam is an ATM machineand nobody else in the NFLis going hungry. He doesn’tneed the added revenue.
Then an even biggerbomb exploded when itwas revealed that theEagles have more cash un-der the salary cap ($23 mil-lion) than any team in theNFL. They didn’t use it in2012, so it was added to thecap number for 2013. WillLurie spend it this year? Nota chance.
Jeff Lurie saved $23 mil-lion in 2012 and still felt aneed to raise ticket prices. At least it is clear who he’susing for the dummy in hisventriloquist act. It’s thefans. ANGELO CATALDI
Don’t take youreyes off CharlieManuel this yearThere are so many fascinat-ing stories on the Philliesthat its easy to miss themost poignant one alreadyunfolding at spring train-ing: What will happen tothe beloved father figureduring this unprecedentedera of success, managerCharlie Manuel?
In what he said wouldbe his only publiccomments on his contractsituation, the 69-year-oldlame duck was surprisinglydefiant last weekend
about the criticism he hasreceived for winning onlyone championship in hislong and varied career.
“My record is just asgood as anybody’s in base-ball,” he said. “I don’t wantto sound like I’m an ‘I/me’guy because I’m not. Butreally, I mean, just look atit. What’s wrong with it?”
Manuel has managedsome of the greatesthitters of the past genera-tion here and in Cleveland, and has one championshipin 11 years. If he actuallybelieves this record rivalsJoe Torre or Tony LaRussaor Bruce Bochy, then theproblem is his own low ex-pectations, not our highambitions.
Regardless of his sourattitude, Manuel's legacy isfirm in Philadelphia.Decades from now, he willbe remembered as the im-probable mastermind of agratifying period for thePhillies. But now the end isdrawing near.
Keep your eye onCharlie Manuel. His finalact will be the most inter-esting story on the Phillies.

Grading theSixers midseasonIf you ask the Sixers, they’ll say that the firsthalf deserves an “incom-plete” grade.
The problem with thisargument is that the Sixersshould have known.Andrew Bynum’s careerhas been littered with im-maturity and knee woes.Jason Richardson’s knee is-sues appeared chronic be-fore he arrived here.
As a team, the Sixers geta D. The only reason it’snot an F is because JrueHoliday has almost single-handedly kept them in theplayoff race. ADAM LEVITAN
Nick Young:Swaggy Pstarted off icecold, but he
has caught fire sinceJason Richardson wentdown. And he’s doing itwith Swag.
Jrue Holiday:Before theseason, Holidaysigned a four-year, $41 million
contract — and Holidayhas taken a leap to All-Star levels and is astrong candidate forNBA’s Most ImprovedPlayer award. He’s a truebuilding block.
Thad Young:Before his ham-string injury, hewas a picture ofconsistency, bringing ener-
