New Red and Yellow Clones for the Industry in the Wisconsin Breeding Program Pipeline Félix Navarro, Bryan Bowen and Jiwan Palta Introduction A goal of the UW Potato Breeding Program is to develop genetically superior chip potato cultivars that satisfy or exceed the standard for yield and grade for the red, yellow and specialty markets. Each year parental lines with desired traits are crossed and progenies are evaluated for fresh market and processing traits, emphasizing early selection evaluation in Central WI and other environments Objectives: Development of fresh market and storage red clones as alternatives Norland and Dark Red Norland. Development of fresh market and storage yellows clones as alternatives to Yukon Gold. Development of specialty clones to contribute to the offer of varieties adapted to WI growing and storage conditions within this category. Breeding and Selection Methods Each year: Parental lines with desired traits are crossed and progenies are evaluated for fresh market and processing traits. Early Selection: in field year 1-2 clones are evaluated for fresh market or processing traits at Rhinelander ARS. Year 3-5: Clones are more intensively evaluated for agronomic, disease, fresh market and processing potential at various locations: Hancock ARS, Rhinelander ARS and out of WI. Year 6+: Evaluation in WI (HARS, RARS, Antigo) regional, national trials and some locations in Canada (MB, ON, NB): Agronomic performance and processing traits. Selection of specialty potatoes are intended to be performed with growers and packers participation. Introduction A goal of the UW Potato Breeding Program is to develop genetically superior chip potato cultivars that satisfy or exceed the standard for yield and grade for the red, yellow and specialty markets. Each year parental lines with desired traits are crossed and progenies are evaluated for fresh market and processing traits, emphasizing early selection evaluation in Central WI and other environments Objectives:

• Development of fresh market and storage red clones as alternatives Norland and Dark Red Norland.

• Development of fresh market and storage yellows clones as alternatives to Yukon Gold.

• Development of specialty clones to contribute to the offer of varieties adapted to WI growing and storage conditions within this category.

Breeding and Selection Methods Each year: • Parental lines with desired traits are crossed and progenies are

evaluated for fresh market and processing traits. • Early Selection: in field year 1-2 clones are evaluated for fresh market or

processing traits at Rhinelander ARS. • Year 3-5: Clones are more intensively evaluated for agronomic, disease,

fresh market and processing potential at various locations: Hancock ARS, Rhinelander ARS and out of WI.

• Year 6+: Evaluation in WI (HARS, RARS, Antigo) regional, national trials and some locations in Canada (MB, ON, NB): Agronomic performance and processing traits.

• Selection of specialty potatoes are intended to be performed with growers and packers participation.

Red Clones and Yellow Flesh

Advanced Red Clones in Tissue Culture and Virus Removal W6002-1R (B1491-5R x W1100R)

High Yield, Yield: High, similar or higher than Dark Red Norland Attractive skin color, very uniform tubers with good market appeal. Very uniform tuber size, shallow eyes Maybe resistant to heat and drought. Later maturity than Dark Red Norland

SpudPro Seed Availability (Foundation Seed Farm)

Specialty Clones There are many different potato types that may be considered specialty Growers and packers are encouraged to participate with breeders in selection of specialty clones.

W8405-1R(Kankan x W2303-9R) Attractive round oval red clone. Can maintain color in storage Very high yield potential. Later maturity than Norland. Shallow eyes. Good internal quality, lacking of internal defects.

W8886-3R (W2303-8R x B1491-5R)

Early Bulking. As early as Norland Nice color & smooth

Note: MT = mini-tuber production, E1, E2, SG foundation seed categories, SpudPro on-farm test, SG/Com = certified seed

W6703-1Y (Satina x W2275-2Y) Yellow flesh variety with smoother than Yukon Gold & bright skin texture Stable common scab resistance and Verticillium wilt tolerance Yield Potential is medium to high.
