This guide is produced by Latin Ameri-

can students to make UNT people con-

scientious about culture of recycling. With the 3 Rs (recycling, reducing and

reusing) we can solve garbage problems

by throwing things away in special bins

and giving them a new utility. Almost all

the things we use daily (newspapers, plastic bottles, cans,

etc.) are made of materials that can be involved in one of the 3

areas, whether recycling, reusing or reducing.

What can you do to reduce?

    The Three Rs

    1. Reducing consumption contributes to numerous positive impacts onthe environment at the same time saves you money.

    2. Inflate your tires: If you own a car, it will get better gas mileage whenthe tires are fully inflated, so it will burn less gas and emit less carbon.

3.Compost your kitchen scraps: You can compost your fruit and vegeta-ble scarps, coffee grounds and egg shells in a back yard compost bin

4.Sell give away or donate usable clothing and household goods. Donatereusable items to a local thrift store.

    5. Buy items with less packaging

    6. Take shorter showers

    7. Give green gifts: Re-making, sharing an experience, providing an ex-perience, providing a service, giving an environmentally friendly products.

    8.Use a refillable bottle

9.Use both sides of the paper

To reuse is to use an item again after it has been used. This in-

cludes conventional reuse where the item is used again for thesame function, and new-life reuse where it is used for a different

    function.

    For example:

You can use your shoes to make con-

    tainer gardener.

Jars and pots to make a chandelier

If you attend to an educational or recreational tour, bring your drinks in thermos flasks, your

sandwiches and other food in reusable containers.

One person's trash is another person's treasure. Instead of discarding unwanted appliances,

tools, or clothes, by donating them. Not only will you be reducing waste, you'll be helping others.

When you do use disposables like plastic cups, plates, utensils, and plastic food storage

bags, don't throw them away! Wash and reuse themmost of them will last for a long time

    with many uses.

    REUSE

    RECOMMENDATIONS AT SCHOOL

    RECOMMENDATIONS AT HOME

Choose wisely the products you buy. Consider the potential impact to ourplanet and if they can be reused.

Avoid products with too much packaging.

Old clothes can be made into other textile items such as cushion covers

Carrier bags can be reused in the shops or as bin bags around the house. Paper bags make useful wrapping paper and twist ties can be used to secure

loose items together, such as computer wires.

Use both sides of the paper

Recycling is a process to change materials into new prod-

ucts to prevent waste of potentially useful materials and re-duce the consumption of fresh raw materials.

It could also be defined as obtaining raw materials fromwaste, introducing them back into the cycle of life. This oc-curs at the prospect of depletion of natural resources.

In 1972, the UN created the United Nations Program on theEnvironment (UNEP), which is responsible for promoting en-

vironmental activities and creating awareness among thepopulation about the importance of protecting the environ-ment.

In order to collect this data, a simple survey was administered whichincluded the following questions:

Do you recycle at home? / Do you recycle at school?

*We also asked: What are your thoughts on the importance of campussustainability?

Most of the students thought its important that UNT promote ecological

values and has to keep moving forward.
