I chose ILSC’s University Pathway Program to prepare me to get into a Canadian university. The UPath advisors helped me to identify and correct my difficulties in English, and I found this program also really improved my writing skills, something that is difficult for foreigners because English has its own unique writing structure. Because of the skills I learned in the University Pathway Program, I feel very prepared to start my studies in Political Science at the University of Prince Edward Island.

I can remember so many things about TRU and my time there. I learned to improve my English with my sweet teachers. I learned how to be a team member and work with different students with different backgrounds and cultures. I know how to manage my time successfully. My time at UFV was rewarding, fun, and certainly unforgettable. Coming to Sault Ste. Marie from my homeland Ghana, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I found out right away that the people here are very friendly, and they make it easy to get involved. Since coming here, I’ve been involved with AMSA, worked on campus in the library and student services, and was elected to the AUSU Board of Directors. I don’t think I would have had those same opportunities at a bigger school.

Lakehead University is one of Canada’s smaller universities which treats students as individuals, inviting them into a community that values exploration and adventure in and outside the class. Technologically advanced and sensitive to student needs, Lakehead has two campus locations; one in Thunder Bay, Ontario with Lake Superior and the boreal forest on its doorstep, and the other in Orillia, Ontario in the heart of central Ontario’s cottage country. The Thunder Bay campus offers comprehensive programs in ten faculties: Business Administration; Education; Engineering; Graduate Studies; Health and Behavioural Sciences; Law; Medicine; Natural Resources Management; Science and Environmental Studies; and Social Sciences and Humanities. To enable students to leverage their many interests, Lakehead University’s program offerings at the Orillia Campus are multidisciplinary. Ideal for students who have broader career interests and aptitudes, a multidisciplinary degree program provides a flexible structure that allows for easy selection of pre-professional program requirements, along with subjects that are of greatest personal interest. The Orillia Campus has been built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards for environmental sustainability and immerses students in a campus environment that demonstrates and promotes awareness of the principles of resource conservation, sustainable growth and the protection of the natural environment. Lakehead University offers unique learning opportunities for students in both cutting edge lab facilities and unparalleled outdoor lab environments.

ATTeNDINg A CoLLege oR UNIVeRSITy IN QUeBeCThe Province of Quebec has a unique educational system that differs from the rest of Canada. In the Quebec system, secondary school goes to Grade 11. Students can then choose from a variety of different post-secondary qualifications which will lead them directly into the work force, or into a University level program.
Important Note: Before starting a post-secondary program, all students wishing to study in
Quebec must take an entry english test. This test is mandated by the Quebec government, and
does not affect a student’s acceptance.
CeRTIFICATIoNS IN QUeBeCDCS/DeC—Diploma of College Studies/ Diplôme d’études collégiales
A DCS/DEC is a degree issued by the Quebec Ministry of Education, Recreation and Sports after a student has successfully completed an approved college education program. There are two types of DCS/DEC’s
1) Pre-university Diploma of College Studies: A two year program, roughly equivalent to Grade 12 + the first year of an associate’s degree. Students wishing to go on to a university education should begin with a pre-university Diploma of College Studies.
2) Technical Training Programs: Three years in length for a total of six sessions, these programs allow students to directly access the work place. In some cases, students who complete a Technical Training Program may choose to pursue university level studies.
ACS/AeC—Attestation of College Studies / Attestation d’études collégiales
AEC programs are part of continuing education and are destined primarily for adults who wish to add value to their skill set or reorient their career. Based on DEC program curricula, AEC programs do not have general education courses like French, English or Philosophy. AEC’s are generally more flexible than DEC or DEP programs. Often offered during the evening, flexible class times allow students to maintain their professional endeavors and study at the same time.
DVS/DeP—Vocational Diploma Diploma of vocational studies / diplôme d’études
professionnelles
A DEP program can last anywhere from 600 to 1800 hours and prepares students to train in a profession to directly enter the job market. A DVS/DEP can lead into a Technical Training Program (DCS/DEC), but typically it is geared to get you straight into the workforce.
Bachelor’s Degree
In Quebec, a Bachelor’s Degree takes a minimum of 3 years to complete. Students must typically complete a pre-university Diploma of College Studies (DCS/DEC) before taking a bachelor’s degree, or in some cases, may enter a bachelor’s degree program after completing a Technical Training Program or DVS/DEP.
Master’s Degree or Doctor’s Degree
Graduate Degrees work similarly to other provinces in Canada, and students must have a bachelor’s degree to apply.

Being a student at Cañada College is definitely a dream come true for me. Cañada opened a whole new window of opportunity for me not only as a student but also as an individual. This school gave me the chance of pursuing my higher education here in the United States, something that I considered impossible once I finished high school in my homeland of Uruguay. After completing my general education courses at Cañada, I plan on transferring to a four-year university program to study international relations. I am proud of being a student at Cañada College. All of the faculty and staff have done an amazing job in terms of helping me with my transition as an international student into the American college system.

My name is Valentín Navarro, and I am an international student from Perú. I first came to Santa Barbara to study English when I was nineteen years old. As I was taking classes, I realized that I wanted to extend my stay and I decided to continue my studies here at SBCC. The SBCC campus is beautiful, and the weather in Santa Barbara is just great. My major is Business Administration, and I am currently finishing my General Education requirements. After that, I am planning to transfer to UCSB and to finally get my BA degree in Business. Studying at SBCC has been a good experience. Santa Barbara City College offers everything you need to succeed and to reach your goals.
