college or universityCOllEGES Colleges offer a wide range of post-secondary and

graduate programs and certifications which require varying time commitments. Diploma programs are often 2-3 years long, Postgraduate Certificates are generally 1 year long, and Undergraduate degree programs require 4 years of study.

Colleges tend to have smaller class sizes allowing for more student interaction, hands-on skill building, and individual attention.

Colleges are a good place for students to expand their practical skills in a specific career area such as business, marketing, finance, project management, IT, technology, design, etc.

Colleges can be a good place to begin a university degree. Many colleges offer first and second year coursework for lower cost than universities. Students may then transfer into a university in their second or third year and complete their degree.

Colleges usually focus on preparing students for specific careers and trades; some offer full university undergraduate degree programs or transfer programs at a much lower cost than Universities, but with no difference in education quality.

Choosing whether to attend college or university will depend on your particular career goals, financial considerations, and the type of environment you prefer to learn in. ILSC’s Pathway Advisors can help you determine the best choice for your needs.

UNivErSiTiES Universities are degree-granting educational

institutions, offering Undergraduate (Bachelor’s), and Graduate (Master’s) programs.

Undergraduate degrees normally take 4 years to complete. Graduate degree programs can usually be completed in 1-2 years (after an Undergraduate Degree has been completed).

Universities usually have much larger class sizes, especially in first and second year courses.

University programs are generally academically focused, offering more theoretical learning, and requiring students to study a broad range of topics to complete their degree.

Certain professions require an undergraduate or graduate degree, for example, Doctors, Lawyers, Engineers, and more. Students should consider their specific career goals when choosing whether to undertake a college or university education.

“Coming to Sault Ste. Marie from my homeland Ghana, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I found out right away that the people here are very friendly, and they make it easy to get involved. Since coming here, I’ve been involved with AMSA, worked on campus in the library and student services, and was elected to the AUSU Board of Directors. I don’t think I would have had those same opportunities at a bigger school.”

“I was a little overwhelmed when I first arrived in the United States but the advisors at the international students office were very friendly and made me feel welcome, helping me figure out my class schedule and adjust to life in the United States. Studying in this climate, and at Peralta Colleges, has really helped me grow as an individual. I have learned to be independent and to work hard, to be open minded, and to think critically. If you work hard, you will be rewarded for it and I feel well prepared to claim my dream of becoming a medical doctor.”

Being a student at Cañada College is definitely a dream come true for me. Cañada opened a whole new window of opportunity for me not only as a student but also as an individual. This school gave me the chance of pursuing my higher education here in the United States, something that I considered impossible once I finished high school in my homeland of Uruguay. After completing my general education courses at Cañada, I plan on transferring to a four-year university program to study International Relations. I am proud of being a student at Cañada College. All of the faculty and staff have done an amazing job in terms of helping me with my transition as an international student into the American college system.”

“I was attracted to study in the United States because of the high standard of its public community college and university system. By taking an Associate Degree in Apparel Design and Merchandising at Alameda College I was able to save a lot of money by studying at a community college for two years, and then successfully transferred to the university of my choice. When I finish my degree at UC Davis, I want to be a textile developer and work in a company with various nationalities, therefore, my U.S. education is crucial to my career.

“I started at Laney College and transferred to UC Berkeley. I graduated from UC Berkeley with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (IEOR) and a minor in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS) with honor. I now work for an investment banking firm in San Francisco as a software engineer/web developer. My time at Laney College prepared me not only academically but also culturally for the transition to UC Berkeley. The staff at the Office of International was friendly and very helpful. They were especially valuable in providing assistance to me when I was preparing my application for the off-campus work authorization.”

My name is Valentín Navarro, and I am an international student from Perú. I first came to Santa Barbara to study English when I was nineteen years old. As I was taking classes, I realized that I wanted to extend my stay and I decided to continue my studies here at SBCC. The SBCC campus is beautiful, and the weather in Santa Barbara is just great. My major is Business Administration, and I am currently finishing my General Education requirements. After that, I am planning to transfer to UCSB and to finally get my BA degree in Business. Studying at SBCC has been a good experience. Santa Barbara City College offers everything you need to succeed and to reach your goals. ”

I consider myself very fortunate to study at Santa Barbara City College. In addition to its beautiful campus, SBCC offers a great environment for international students. Academic counselors are always available to assist me in developing an appropriate educational plan to achieve my goal of pursuing a major in Mass Media and Communication as well as to broaden my cultural perspective. I have also met many instructors who are knowledgeable and greatly dedicated to teaching. Moreover, meeting students from such a wide range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds has been a significant inspiration to me. Mari Kasai - Japan

“I chose ILSC’s University Pathway Program to prepare me to get into a Canadian university. I wanted to study in Canada

because the people are so friendly and helpful. The UPath advisors helped me to identify and correct my difficulties in English, and I found this program also really improved my

writing skills, something that is difficult for foreigners because English has its own unique writing structure. Because of the

skills I learned in the University Pathway Program, I feel very prepared to start my studies in Political Science at the

University of Prince Edward Island.”

Successful graduates of ILSC’s University Pathway program will be able to enter directly into their chosen partner school once they have completed the UPath program. Students also take University Preparation I and II, which are taught as if they were true university courses. Students will learn note-taking skills, research skills, essay writing and correct citation formats. The UPath program will help you develop a much broader skill set than simply focusing on passing an IELTS or TOEFL test. By the time you start a program at your chosen partner school, you’ll have all the tools you need for success!

What does it cost? There are no additional fees for the University Pathway program, just your regular ILSC course fees.

Do I get a certificate at the end of the program? Yes, you will receive an official ILSC University Pathways Certificate when you complete the program.

how long does it take to get an acceptance letter from my college/university of choice? Once we send off your completed application package you can typically expect to receive your conditional acceptance letter within 5-10 business days.

How much money do I have to pay when I first apply to the partner college/university? All partner schools require a non-refundable application fee, usually around $100. Some schools will also require the first semester’s tuition as a deposit. Ask your counsellor or the UPath team to find out!
