Your daughter’s Girl Scout experience can be as busy and exciting as she wants it to be. You may not realize that she has many options available to her. Here are the ways you can find out what’s going on all year ‘round and what kinds of program activities interest her.

Troop-based activities:Groups of Girl Scouts tend to plan their activities with the guidance of adult mentors. Be sure to read everything the troop leader sends home.

Council-sponsored events/activities:Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana publishes several guides each year (including this one!) that include all kinds of activities for girls to do by themselves, with their troops, and with their friends and family members. Camp CEO: June 16-21, 2013If you are age 14 or older or will be entering 9th grade in the fall, this is the perfect leadership opportunity for you ...

Discover that the women who run local companies and make important decisions every day were once teens just like you, trying to decide where to go to college and what they wanted to be. Ask them questions as you paddle a canoe, hear their surprising stories around the campfire, and learn how the choices they made impacted their lives and contributed to their success.

In addition to powerful one-on-one sessions with these women, you’ll also connect to other teen girls by participating in lots of fun camp-based activities like geocaching (high-tech scavenger hunting), swim-ming, team-building games, and archery. Participate in yoga, self-de-fense, dressing for success, and networking workshops. Then plan and host a huge dinner party with fancy place-settings, table decorations and party food. The adult campers will participate right along with you in all these activities.

At Camp Butternut Springs, girls may attend camp for up to two weeks at a time. This sum-mer we’re taking a step back in time to have a retro camp experience. Have a blast doing camp activities from past decades like the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s. You sign up for camp, share living space with girls your age, and once you get there, you’re in charge of deciding what you want to do! See page 10 to learn about the options.

At Camp Juniper Knoll and Camp Poka-noka, there are also longer options for Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors. Program listings that are for shorter or longer than a week will indicate the program length next to the name of the program. Check them out!

Campers who attend camp for sessions that are longer than one week will stay for the weekend. Campers will not have the ability to do laundry while at camp; please pack accordingly.

Counselor- In -Training is offered at Camp Butternut Springs and Camp Juniper Knoll.CITs will stay during the weekend at camp with their counselors.

New! Counselor InternshipHave you completed CIT I and II but not yet 18 years old? Volunteer to assist at resident camp for 1 or 2 weeks this summer. Girls, what does a perfect summer look like to you? If you said swimming, spending time with new friends, having the chance to experience things you just can’t do at home and being out-doors, then resident camp is the place for you!

Choose from three camps. Stay close to home or head out and experience a new camp. Our camps are set up for you to attend on your own or choose to head to camp with one friend.

Camp Butternut Sprigs is located just outside of Valparaiso, Indiana. It’s close enough to lots of highways to make it easy to get to from just about anywhere in the Chicago region. The camp has an archery range, swimming pool, and shower house, a pond for boating, athletic fields and hiking trails. You’ll eat most meals in the dining hall but will have the chance to cook over a campfire at least once.

If you’re in grades 1 – 11 right now, we’ve got a spot just for you! Live in a platform tent with other girls your age. Your counselors will be nearby in their own tent. Your living area will include a building that has toilets and sinks in it- showers at the pool.

What’s happening at Camp Butternut Springs? Celebrate all that Camp Butternut Springs has to offer! Participate in cool activities that have always been a part of Girl Scout camp.

Plan your week and choose from lots of the camp activities you love- your time at camp will be FOR YOU, planned BY YOU.

On Sunday evening, learn about all of the activi-ties that will be offered while you’re at camp and then sign up for your favorites or for things you want to try! There will be time during the week to try a few things you may have missed. If you’ll be at camp for more than a week you’ll have the chance to sign up for new activities each Sunday.

Campers live in units with girls their age. During the week, choose activities you want to partici-pate in and each day meet with other girls who have signed up for the same activities. Activity groups will be made up of girls who are similar ages. Your unit will plan special activities just for the girls in your unit. Everyone will come together for all camp fires, meals, and celebrations.

First Tee Golf ProgramLearn how to choose the correct golf club to make that “hole in one”. Work with professional golf instructors learning the basics of golf. This program will travel to a nearby golf course each day. Grab your Naturalist Hat!Do you love being outdoors? Work with the Indiana Dunes Environmental Learning center discovering what a forest ranger, park conserva-tionist and reforestation engineer do. Take a walk through the dunes, identify trees and learn more about them. Were they natural or planted? Native or imported? Explore why trees are important to people. Back at camp each day choose camp activities you enjoy! You Can Find Me at the BeachSpend a day hiking the trails around Indiana Beach, then cool off in the lake. Learn about weather conditions that impact the lakefront while working on activities from the “It’s your Planet” journey “Breathe”. Enjoy all the activities you love about being at camp, archery, swimming, canoeing. Counselor– In-Training I (Ambassadors)Develop and polish your camping skills, and learn basic counselor techniques. Learn about the developmental characteristics of children, learn how to teach songs and games and spend time observing and working with younger campers. This program is for girls who are serious about be-coming camp counselors. Counselor-In-Training II(Ambassadors; CIT I required; two week session)Put into practice the skills developed in CIT I while working on the finer points of being a counselor. Camp Juniper Knoll is located just north of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Swim at our private beach on Pleasant Lake, Hike the trails, learn archery and play games in the meadow. Work on craft projects and make lots of new friends. End you day with a campfire at Embers Theatre.

If you’re in grades 1 – 11 right now, Camp Juniper Knoll has just the adventure for you!

Learn beginning horseback riding, canoe the Wisconsin River, head to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness or put on a play. Whatever your interest, Juniper Knoll has a program for you! Live in a platform tent or yurt with girls your age; your counselors will be nearby in their own yurt or tent. Modern restroom facilities are in each unit, and a shower house is available for everyone. Meals will be provided in the dining hall, and you will have the opportunity to cook over a campfire. Bits and BridlesJump in the saddle! Spend the week with other beginning riders learning all you can about horses, their habits and their care. On three mornings, travel to a local stable to go on a trail ride. Doctor ZoolittleInvestigate the animal habitats at camp. Learn more about wild animals and endangered animal habitats. Spend 1 day at the Milwaukee Zoo, visit with a zoo keeper. Playing the PastDiscover what life was like in the 1800’s. What was the fashion then? What did you and your best friend do together? Take a field trip to Old World Wisconsin experiencing what life was like then. Learn several games and create art that was popular then. Travel around camp learning back-packing skills and the basics of “Leave No Trace.” Follow the clues as you “hunt” for your food. Work in teams challenging each other. Learn how to pack it in and pack it out. Set up a camp and sleep under the starts. This two-week adventure will include several hikes in Kettle Moraine State Park. Camp Pokanoka is located outside of Ottawa, Illinois on the banks of the Illinois River. There are trails to hike, a creek to walk along, a pool, shower house and a gazebo for stargazing. Spend time doing archery or playing games on the fields.

If you’re in grades 1 – 11 right now, Camp Pokanoka is the perfect place for your summer adventure! Live in a platform tent or an open-air cabin (we call them tabins) if you’re in grades 6 – 12; whether or not you stay in a platform tent or tabin depends on what week you’re at camp. If you’re in grades 2 – 5, you’ll live in a tabin. You’ll stay with other girls your age; your counselors will be nearby in their own tent or tabin. Swims, play games, cook, out, work on craft projects and make lots of new friends! Volunteer-led Day Camp OverviewVolunteer-led day camps are community-based endeavors under-taken by talented and enthusiastic volunteers who have organized a camping experience for Girl Scouts. Each day camp has a unique theme and specialized activities; many volunteer-led day camps fea-ture Teen Mentoring opportunities for older girls and an overnight for interested campers. These camps utilize a variety of sites for their programming, including state and county parks, forest preserves, and Girl Scout camps.

All volunteer-led day camps are supported by council staff to ensure they meet numerous standards regarding program, budgeting, risk management, and health and safety. Registration is handled by each day camp or you may register online.

Volunteer-led day camps rely on adult volunteers to participate in all aspects of the camp program. Without you, these camps are unable to serve the girls in the community. Please contact the volunteer team leading the camp in your community about options and oppor-tunities.

Are you looking for something new and exciting to do this summer? Girl Scout day camp is the place for you! Whether you have gone to day camp for years or are coming for the first time, we can’t wait to see you and are counting down the days until summer!

We offer day camp at a variety of sites throughout the council. Look for one that is close to you.

Please note that Amazing Daisies, our program for girls entering grades 1 -2 at Von Oven Scout Reservation in Naperville, is half a day.

Everyone at camp gets to play games outdoors, work on craft projects, sing songs, and make lots of new friends! Girls who are in 4th grade, or older, will have the option of having an overnight at camp.

How do you know if you are ready to overnight? Check out our quiz on page 28. Then have a chat with your family to select the program that fits you best.

Like more than one session? That’s great. You can sign up for as many ses-sions as you like, with the okay from your parents, of course.

Friendship CenterDay camp at Friendship Center is back and better than ever! Spend your days outdoors playing games and learning camping skills. You’ll also have plenty of time to head indoors to explore the arts – dance, drama, painting and drawing. You name it; we’ll give it a try. Program runs Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Camp Greene WoodThe full-day program at Camp Greene Wood provides campers the opportu-nity to explore nature, work on crafts, play games, and sing lots of songs. An optional overnight is included for girls in grades 4-12.

Camp PalosThe full-day program at Camp Palos will allow you to experience all that camp has to offer - songs, games, crafts, na-ture activities, cooking in the outdoors and an optional overnight experience for girls entering 4th grade and above.

Von Oven Located close to the heart of downtown Naperville, but in a beautiful woodsy setting, Von Oven has great opportuni-ties for even the youngest Girl Scouts to explore.

Camp Juniper KnollJuniper Knoll in East Troy, WI, offers a resident camp experience in a day camp session. Located on a beautiful lake with a sandy beach, Juniper Knoll gives you all kinds of choices of things to do for day camp.

Camp Butternut SpringsCamp Butternut Springs in Valparaiso, IN, offers a resident camp experience in a day camp session. It’s easy to get to the camp from all directions since it’s right near several expressways. It has a beautiful pond, a swimming pool, trails, and lots and lots of fun things to do.

Juniors, add your ideas to your day camp experience. Work together with the other girls in your unit to choose crafts, songs, games, nature, hikes, outdoor science and an outdoor cooking adventure.

How do I know if I am ready to overnight?

Junior girls also have the chance to over-night, typically on Thursday night. Are you ready for this experience?

You may choose not to participate. The Junior Jump Start program is available for those girls not yet ready to overnight.

When deciding between programs that include an overnight or not, think about the following:

• Have you been away from home, without your parents? Did you feel comfortable?

• Are you comfortable in the out of doors, at night?

• Are you able to take care of your own needs? (i.e. pack your over-night gear, etc)

• Do you adapt to new situations well?

Talk with your parents. They may think you are ready even if you are not sure. An overnight can be the very best part of camp for a girl who is ready. It can also be overwhelming if you are not quite ready.

Volunteering at day camp is the perfect way to connect with nature and Girl Scouts! Our day camp programs rely on volunteers.

About StopsBus or train transportation to these camps is provided as part of the registration fee. The charts show the bus stops available for each session. Every effort has been made to ensure that the trip to camp takes less than an hour.

Stops will be added or deleted based on location availability. No sites will be added once registration opens.

To make routes as efficient as possible for all camp-ers, we will cancel a stop if there are less than five riders registered at the stop by May 1. Last-minute changes to bus routes or adding riders are difficult to accommodate.

General InformationGirl Scout summer camp is open to ALL girls entering 1st - 12th grade regardless of race, color, nationality or socioeconomic factors. Grades listed for each program refer to the grade the camper will be entering in the fall.

MembershipGirl Scout membership is required to participate. Non-members must add the $12 membership fee to the registration fee to cover membership through Sept. 30, 2013. Girl Scouts of the USA provides basic accident insurance coverage for all registered Girl Scouts as a supplement to the family’s existing insurance coverage.

Friends/BuddiesGirls attend camp individually, not as a troop, though they may choose to attend with one friend/buddy. Every attempt is made to place them in the same unit, but is not guaranteed. Units are generally made up of girls who are in the same level of Girl Scouting, so friends who vary greatly in age are not likely to be placed together.

Girls with Special NeedsWe are committed to accommodating girls with special needs. Our goal is to provide a positive camp experience for all girls. Parents/guardians of girls with special needs should contact Peggy Brothers ([email protected]) so the best placement can be made.

Proper Behavior RequiredCamp life is an excellent opportunity for girls to live, work and play together. It is a community of many people, and we expect everyone to behave appropriately. The camp director and staff will do everything possible to help girls ad-just to camp life. However, GSGCNWI reserves the right to send any girl home from camp who constantly misbehaves, who willfully disobeys camp rules, or whose behaviors towards others (campers or staff) is unacceptable. There is no refund in these cases.

Camp Staff and LeadershipMembers of our camp staff are enthusiastic, talented, fun-loving and caring individuals. They are selected based on their experience, ability to serve as role models and their genuine desire to work with children. Our staff is committed to creating a caring and supportive environment that respects each girl as an individual.

Staff candidates are recruited from colleges and universities, local community agencies and refer-rals. At our day camps, volunteers and seasonal staff provide the leadership. Individuals must be at least 18 years old and complete a thorough application process which includes a background check.

The health and safety of our campers is always the first priority of the staff. Staff training prior to camp includes supervising and caring for camp-ers, activity programming, first aid and CPR, team building, and much more. Staff members who su-pervise high-adventure activities are required to have additional training and qualifications. Staff are all registered members of Girl Scouts.

Positions AvailableEach summer we seek highly motivated and talented people to join our staff. Those interested in a job at camp should visit our website, www.girlscoutsgcnwi.org, for more information.

Positions are perfect for students earning de-grees in recreation, education, early childhood development, sports management, psychology, social work, nursing, and environmental studies. Positions in food service and health management are also available.

Financial AssistanceGirl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana is committed to ensuring that all girls have the opportunity to participate in Girl Scouts. Financial assistance is offered to help meet the needs of those members whose family would financially be unable to participate in approved Girl Scout activities.• A person must be a registered member to

receive financial assistance.• All Girl Scout funds must be used for the

Refunds• Deposits are non-refundable and non-trans-

ferable ($20 for day camp; $40 for one-week resident camp programs; or $100 for two-week resident camp programs).

• A full refund, including deposit, is made only if a camper cannot be placed in a program or if it is necessary for the council to cancel the program.

• A full refund, minus the deposit, will be given if the request is made in writing at least three weeks prior to the start of the selected ses-sion, or if the cancellation was due to illness or injury and a physician’s note is provided.

• No refunds will be made for campers who arrive late, leave early, attend only part of a program, fail to show up or for those who are asked to leave because of behavior issues.

• Girl and adult membership registration is non-refundable.

• Refund requests must be submitted in writing to Girl Scouts, Attn: Summer Camp Refund, 2400 Ogden Ave., Suite 400, Lisle, IL 60532-3933. Requests must be made no later than Aug. 30, 2013.

Camp is the Place for Girls to GrowPicture your daughter learning new skills, building her self-confidence, meeting new people, and making friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. All this can be hers at Girl Scout resident camp.

Girl Scout camp is a safe place where all girls (even those who are not currently Girl Scouts) can experi-ence the great outdoors. It is a place where a girl can hike a trail, stretch her limits, build her self-esteem or learn a new song. Girls never forget the first time they cook over a fire, discover a tree or paddle a canoe. Be-ing part of a community and gaining independence are just two of the many benefits of summer camp.

The theme of the week covers a majority of the activi-ties. Other activities include swimming, playing games, cookouts and crafts.

Girl Scout resident camp programs are for all girls and are a terrific value. Her camp fee covers:• Lodging for six days and five nights at camp;• A wide variety of camp programming, supervised

by our trained staff;• Staffing that includes camp counselors, a health

supervisor, waterfront staff, program staff, and our camp director;

• Meals prepared by our food service staff, featuring fresh fruits and vegetables; accommodations can be made for girls with special diets, with advance notice!

Half-Week, Full-Week and Longer Sessions Available!Half-week programs are available for all ages, even Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors. These programs are scheduled early in the season to allow girls the chance to try camp and attend again later in the sum-mer. There are half-week sessions offered the same time as full-week sessions for first-time campers who want to attend camp during the same week as “expe-rienced camper” family members. There are several longer sessions for girl who “love camp and don’t want to go home.”

Changes for 2013Back by popular demand! We will dismiss campers on Friday evening to allow families to attend the closing ceremony. Closing ceremonies will begin at 7 p.m., with camper dismissal approximately 30 minutes after-wards.

We Love to Celebrate! Girls celebrating a 5- or 10-year resident camp mile-stone will be recognized during the closing ceremony of their session. Join us as we celebrate these young women who have contributed to our camp communi-ties over the years. We count only years at Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana and legacy council resident camps.

Encourage Girls to Spread the Word About How Much They Love Camp! Does your daughter love Girl Scout resident camp? If she tells her friends, your camper will receive a special patch! Girls who have attended resident camp for at least one year, and recruit two friends who sign up and attend resident camp, will be recognized at the closing ceremony of their session. Friends do not need to attend camp together and do not need to be in the same grade level. Friends who are recruited must be girls that have not attended Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana resident camps previously. Girls must recruit two new campers to receive the patch. Send an e-mail with your daughter’s name and the names of the 2 new campers that she has recruited for her recruiter patch by June 1, 2013, to [email protected].

Camp LivingWhile on site, campers and staff live in groups called units. Sleeping accommodations vary by camp and by unit, and may be a platform tent, yurt (a tent with a dome) or an open-air cabin we call a tabin. Girls sleep in groups of four to eight campers and staff sleeps in a separate, but nearby tent or tabin, within the unit.

Meals are well-balanced, nutritious and served family– or buffet-style in the dining hall. Girls will also have the opportunity to plan and cook some of their meals with their unit. Contact [email protected] with any dietary restrictions or allergies at least one month before camp.

Health and Safety InformationEach camp has established emergency procedures in consultation with local law enforcement and emergen-cy services. As part of camper orientation on the first day of camp, campers learn about these procedures and have drills that are used during the camp session for practice.

Our camps all follow standards set forth by Girl Scouts of the USA and the American Camp Association. Our Girl Scout camps offering summer camp programming are licensed by the state, and uphold state and federal codes for health, safety, site food service, manage-ment, human resources, program design, and activities.

Prior to attending camp, campers must turn in a completed health history form that includes a physical examination.• This physical examination by a physician must be

completed within 24 months of attending camp.• The form will be included in the camp information

packet. This packet will be accessible via a link on your payment receipt, if you register online, other-wise it will be mailed to you.

• The completed and signed health examination must be returned by May 1, 2013.

New Forms Needed Every Year: We do not keep health forms from year to year. We recommend that you keep a copy for your records for future use.

Health Screening at Camp: Upon arrival at camp, all girls will receive a health screening by trained staff. Health screening includes having her temperature taken, feet checked, scalp checked for lice and an over-all scan for apparent illness or injury.

If head lice are found, your camper will not be allowed to stay at camp. You may treat your camper and all of her belongings and return to camp to be re-checked. Our camps have a “no nit” policy. This is for the health and safety of all campers and staff. Campers with lice will not be admitted to camp until treated and there is no sign of nits.

During camp, you will be contacted if the health super-visor determines that your camper requires health care services outside of what is available at camp .

Camper Information PacketOnce you have registered, you will receive a receipt via e-mail if you registered online. That receipt will have a link to the camper information packet. On-line registra-tion confirmations should be received within 48 hours. If you have not received your confirmation, contact [email protected]. Please read through the list of documents and print and complete any that apply to your camper. This packet also includes an equipment list.

Campers who registered via a paper application and provided an e-mail address will receive a camper information packet by e-mail. Families that do not have access to e-mail and do not provide an e-mail address will receive a confirmation and camper information packet by mail.

Day Camp: A Time for Adventure Summer day camp includes fun-filled days with activities that open up new worlds, provide new opportunities to build confidence and just be a girl. Girls discover they can do things for them-selves like cook something over a fire with her newly found cooking skills…..connect with the outdoors when they hike a trail or see a deer along the way……and make memories that they will have the rest of their lives.

Girls will find a variety of program options that will pique their interests during their time at day camp. Each program has a special focus where girls can explore an area a bit more in depth. They still have a chance to do all the regular camp fa-vorites like arts & crafts, hiking, and tie dying.

Girls in each unit have a chance to offer their own ideas to customize the unit’s program for the week. This means that a program’s content may change from week to week. Some requirements for Girl Scout journeys or badges may be met dur-ing the week.

Girl Scout day camp programs are the best value in the area. Her camp fee covers:• Five days of programming that will keep her

busy, challenged, and meeting new friends.• Staffing by a comprehensive camp staff that

includes a health supervisor, program staff and camp counselors.

• Food for her group’s cook out.• NOTE: Transportation to camp via chartered

bus is EXTRA.

Where Will Her Adventure Take Her?

Friendship CenterFriendship Center is in Country Club Hills, IL. Outdoors there is plenty of open area to play in, a pavilion for shelter, and lightly forested areas to explore. The program center has several break-out rooms and a large multipurpose space for large group activities. Our programs at Friendship Center combine Girl Scout activities like outdoor games, campfires, and crafts with a focus on arts-based programming in music, dance, drawing, painting, and other forms of expression. The camper day at Friendship Center runs from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Campers bring a sack lunch to camp. Transportation is not available.

Camp Greene WoodCamp Greene Wood is a 136-acre wooded property in Woodridge, IL. There are hiking trails, cabins, fields for games, an archery range and platform tents. Day camp programs at Camp Greene Wood allow girls to explore the outdoors and develop skills in a safe and fun environment. A wide variety of programs provide opportunities for girls to choose activities best suited for their age and interests.

The camper day at Greene Wood is from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Campers going into grade 4 and up may choose to participate in an overnight experi-ence on Thursday. Campers bring a sack lunch to camp, except when there is a cookout. Meals during the overnight are provided.

Camp PalosCamp Palos is located near Palos Park, IL. There are 80 acres of wooded areas and open fields with a stream running through the camp. Camp-ers will find lots to do when hiking the trails, overnighting in one of four cabin sites or sleeping in the platform tents.

The program at Camp Palos includes lots of opportunities to build outdoor skills, explore the camp, and make new friends. Girl planning insures that no two weeks are exactly the same.

Von Oven Scout ReservationVon Oven Scout Reservation is a property used by Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. Von Oven is about ten acres of wooded land near Naperville Central High School where younger campers can learn about the outdoors. There is a small cabin that can be used in inclement weather.

Our program at Von Oven Scout Reservation gives our youngest campers an opportunity to experience day camp for a shorter day. Activities similar to what are found at Greene Wood and Palos are featured while being scaled just right for Daisies and younger Brownies.

The program at Von Oven is a half day from 9 a.m – 1 p.m.; a snack is provided. Transportation is not available to Von Oven.

Health and SafetySafety is a part of everything we do from always walking with a buddy to practicing emergency procedures. We follow Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. standards and that of the American Camp As-sociation.Our camps are also licensed by the state and fol-low all state and federal codes for site, food ser-vice, health and safety, staffing, program design and management.

Every girl must have a HEALTH HISTORY to participate in day camp. It is REQUIRED. A girl’s registration will not be considered complete until her health history is submitted.

• Any medications to be taken while at camp must be accompanied by an Authorization to Medicate form. This will be sent via e-mail in the confirmation you will receive two weeks before camp.

• List any severe allergies or other important health information. The health supervisor will contact parents of campers with serious or life-threatening allergies to complete an Al-lergy Action Plan.

• Each program site has a health supervisor who will contact parents about health con-cerns as needed.

• Parents of girls with specific needs should contact Leslie Worcester ([email protected] ) to discuss those needs.

• Day camp is held rain or shine. Buildings or shelters are available in the event of severe weather.

• All safety procedures are reviewed with campers on the first day of camp.

Unit SizePrograms are divided into groups called units. Average unit size is based on the program level. At least two adults supervise each unit’s program. Units have their own outdoor unit site to call home for the week. Activities throughout the day or week will take them all over camp.

Day Camp Volunteers NeededVolunteers are an important part of our day camp community. It is the perfect way to connect with nature and Girl Scouts!

We are looking for adult ages 18+ who would like to volunteer for one week of the summer. Mul-tiple opportunities exist, from being a bus rider to working in a unit providing program. Volunteers must commit to an entire week of camp.
