Meet the Coaches

Van Hedrick has been the only head coach the Lady Lions softball program has had in its 15 year-existance. During these years Coach He-drick has led the Lady Lions to two conference championships and one regional championship. In 2009 the Lady Lions advanced to the NJCAA National Tournament in St. George, Utah for the first time in school history.

Formerly the assistant to NCTC head baseball coach Kevin Darwin, Coach Hedrick has proven his ability to lead and inspire student athletes. He has also held the title of Athletic Director here at North Central from 2005-present. He has averaged 40 wins a season in his previous 14 years and holds a 574-287 winning record.

While attending Iowa Park High School, where he graduated in 1985, Van Hedrick was a three-sport letterman in football, basketball and baseball, and he earned All-District honors in all three sports. His pursuit of excellence on the playing field is no different in his work as the Lady Lions’ first coach than it was in his playing days. Coach Hedrick attended Vernon Regional Junior College from 1986-1988, playing shortstop and serving as a team tri-captain. After earning his Associate degree there, Hedrick attended Tarleton State University from 1988 to 1990. At Tarleton, he moved to the outfield and was used as a relief pitcher. An arm injury sidelined him for most of his junior season. During Hedrick’s senior year at Tarleton, however, he was named “Comeback Player of the Year.”

In 1990, Coach Hedrick earned his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, with a minor in Physical Education. After a year of assistant coaching at Hill College, he returned to Tarleton State and was a graduate assistant coach for two years while completing his Master of Education degree in 1992.

Coach Hedrick is married to Robyn Ruzicka Hedrick and they have three beautiful daughters Ashley (13), Allison (10) and Autumn (7). Robyn holds a master’s degree in Early Childhood Development and teaches high school Family and Consumer Science in Lindsay, TX where the three girls all attend school.

Taylor is in her seventh year as the Assistant Coach for North Central. In her previous six years, she has assisted Coach Hedrick in four 40-plus winning seasons with a record of 257-111. Together along with the girls they have recruited, they have claimed a Conference

Championship, Regional Championship and a first ever trip to the National Tournament for the Lady Lions.

While attending Washington High School in Wash-ington, Oklahoma where she graduated in 2002. Christian was a four year 3 sport letterman in fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball and basketball. Here she was a back to back state champion in fast-pitch soft-ball, a four peat state champion in slow-pitch softball and a two time state runner-up in basketball. Taylor earned all-district honors in all sports and was a member of the 2001 All-State Fast-pitch softball team.

She also earned honors in FCA, FFA and Who’s Who Among High School Students. She was an officer all four years in FFA and was awarded the American Star Farmer degree in 2002. FCA officer all four years as well and received the prestigious sportsmanship award in FCA as a junior.

A graduate of NCTC with an Associate of Science degree and later a Bachelor of Science degree from Northwest-ern Oklahoma State University, Christian played her way through college on scholarships to both schools. She was a four-year utility starter at the collegiate level for the Lady Lions here at NCTC and the Rangers of Northwestern where she played 2nd, Catcher, 3rd and outfield.

At Northwestern, Christian was the Graduate As-sistant at the Wellness Center where she assisted in managing and running the pool, fitness rooms and fitness classes. She also served as a student trainer for Northwestern where she assisted the trainer with all sports from football, baseball, softball, soccer, basket-ball and cheerleading.

At North Central, Taylor is also a Physical Education Instructor where she teaches Aerobics, Weight Train-ing, and online PE Courses. Coach Christian current-ly is pursuing a dual Master of Sports Science degree in Coaching and Sports Medicine through the United States Sports Academy. Taylor is the proud parent of two Boxer pups, Aspen a White female with reverse brindle spots and Easton a Fawn male. They are both 3 years of age.

Facilities

The Lady Lions play their home games at Darwin Field, an on-campusfacility that is one of the nicest fields in junior college softball. Recent

renovations have included spectator shading and a press box complete with air conditioner and heater. The home dugout includes a shatter-proof glass

window that not only protects players from foul balls, but keeps the dugout warm in winter.

Page 23: 2013 Softball Recruiting and Media Guide

The Lady Lions Locker Room is adjacent to Darwin Field and features indivudual player lockers, a longue area and a wall-mounted

flat-screen TV

point average (GPA) of 3.24 for the Fall semester. The Lady Lion volleyball team had the highest mark with a 3.37 GPA. Baseball and tennis were second at

Bagley (softball), Bill Bay (baseball), Jordan Chandler (tennis), Landon Darwin (baseball), Charles Deckard (baseball), Dean Fleitman (baseball) and Rachel Kidwell (softball).

Among the athletes who were named to the Dean’s List with a GPA of 3.5-3.9 were Cassidy Crawford (ten-nis), Lauren Cude (volleyball), Greg Davis (baseball), Danny Fernandez (baseball), Shannon Green (softball), Kelli Hadley (volleyball), Katie Heath (softball), Kaitlynn Henson (volleyball), Scott Hill (baseball), Harlee John-son (volleyball), Nika Juricic (tennis), Matt Michalski (baseball), Celina Ortiz (softball), Jasmine Parker (soft-ball), Alexander Pena (baseball), Danny Perez (baseball), Jaymee Ross (volleyball), Kat Strunk (softball), Clayton Vaughn (baseball) and Hailee Washburn (volleyball).

“It certainly is a nice accomplishment when more than a third of our student-athletes made either the Dean’s or President’s honors list,” NCTC athletic director Van Hedrick said. “It’s not easy to spend hours in class, at practice and competing in games and tournaments both in and out of town and still find time to get homework done and study for exams. It speaks to the dedication of the students.”

Each NCTC team has mandatory study hall hours. In addition, they are able to use the Student Success Cen-ter where they, like other students, can take advantage of free tutoring and other academic services.

Seven Lady Lion softball players were named to either the President’s List or Dean’s List for the 2012 Fall semester. Student-athletes honored included (left to right), front row: Katie Heath, Jasmine Parker and

Shannon Green; back row: Kendall Bagley, Rachel Kidwell, Celina Ortiz and Kat Strunk.

This is NCTCEstablished in 1924 under the leadership of Texas community college pioneer Randolph Lee Clark,

North Central Texas College is the oldest continuously operating public two-year college in the state. From its roots as a small, rural “junior” college — an extension of the local public schools actually — NCTC has grown and matured into a comprehensive, full-service community college of truly regional scope, serving students from five major campuses located across its service area. This fall, NCTC set

a new enrollment record of 10,175 students system-wide.
