February 2013 ProgrammeWelcome to our bumper edition of activities for this February half term!This year’s half term is sure to be an exciting one with over 40 sports,arts and museum courses throughout the district. Many of the activitiesare indoors so the weather can’t spoil our fun and some are even free.It’s all set to be an amazing week!
New activities for this year include a special learn to swimweek at Salt Ayre Sports Centre, a skate park at RegentPark and a habitat trail quiz at Happy Mount Park. Asalways, our places sell out fast, so make sure you bookearly to secure your place.
Whatever you decide to try this holiday, you’re sure to have lots of fun, make new friends and have a trulymemorable experience.
How to use this guide The details for all of our holiday activities can be foundin this brochure, listed in both A to Z format and in a dayby day format. The back page also has an ‘at a glance’section that lists all the activities in date order.
Please note that each workshop has differentrequirements e.g. age, specific clothing, venues varyand transport is sometimes provided. Please see eachworkshop individually. Please also note that due to someworkshops being outdoors they are weather dependantand can be cancelled on the day. If you are concerned onthe day if a particular activity is running or not, pleasecontact Salt Ayre Sports Centre for confirmation.
Activities for under 8 year oldsThroughout our brochure you will find lots more workshops for 4 to 7 year olds.
NOTE: A responsible adult must stay on site during any workshop for children under 8years old. Parents are expected to take part with their child in some workshops.

Booking InformationBookings can be taken in person, by post and by phone from Monday 28 January.
1. To book and pay in person
Bookings with cash and card payments can be made in person by visiting Salt Ayre Sports Centre
between 8am and 9pm Monday to Friday, or between 8.30am and 6pm Saturday and Sunday.
Be sure to have a fully completed booking form for each applicant and your payment.
2. To book and pay by phone (payments of £2.50 or more only)To book and pay for your activities by phone, call the Holiday Activity Programme Booking and
Information Line on 01524 842493 - Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm or 01524 847540 - Monday
to Friday, 8am to 8pm and weekends 8am to 6pm. Our friendly staff will guide you through the
booking process.

All the information on the pink booking form in the centre of the programme including:
• Activity name and Activity reference number (e.g. ACT01)
• Your credit / debit card details
All applicants for the Holiday Activity Programme will require a parent or guardian declaration.
This will be done during your booking.
ACCEPTED CARDS
Please note that booking is required for all Lancaster City Council
activities including all FREE activities using the methods below. Any
activities that are provided by Heysham Swimming Pool, Lancaster
museums or Lancaster Castle must be booked directly with them.

Additional InformationActivity information - We strongly advise that all participants wear suitable clothing for the
activity that they are due to take part in. Information about suitable clothing or requirements
for each session can be found in pages 11 to 16.
Disabled access - Where possible, we use premises which are fully accessible. If you would like

Passport to Leisure holders - If your child has or is included on a Passport to Leisure card, they are
entitled to £1 discount per activity.

The programme is correct at the time of going to print. However, the organisers reserve the right to make changes. Participationin all the activities is entirely at the participant’s own risk. Lancaster City Council regrets that under no circumstances can refundsbe given, unless the council cancels the activity due to minimum numbers or any unforeseen circumstances.
Badge swimThis is a great opportunity to test your swimming and get rewarded for your efforts. You can swim upto 5,000 metres in this session at Heysham Pool. How far will you get? A badge and certificate areincluded in the price.
BadmintonWhy not pop down this half term for an action packed badminton session? Practice and hone yourskills then take them into a few fun tournaments and games.
Be a zoo keeperHave you got what it takes to become a zoo keeper for the day? Working with our zoo keepers atWilliamson Park you will learn how to look after animals, help feed them and get the Butterfly Houseready for opening. Are you brave enough to handle some of our mini-beasts? This will be a greatmorning for anyone interested in animals.
Bird watching NEW!Join our bird watching group as we spot birds along Morecambe Promenade. You’ll learn to identifybirds using special spotter sheets and find out what food they love to eat.
Blue, green, yellow, dead - live action zombie gameIt's dark, claustrophobic - you have a mission - to find three vials - Blue... Green... Yellow... If you don'tyou could end up DEAD! You’re armed with a high quality paintball gun... there are trapdoors,confined spaces and dead ends and then there are the zombies... time is short... can you succeed?Will you survive? Please note that the paintball guns are only used to shoot zombies (not each other).You must have a reasonable level of fitness to participate in this activity.
Crazy inflatable funMake a splash this half term with two hours of mayhem in Salt Ayre pool. You’ll love racing along ourspooky inflatable ghost ship and playing with our huge range of inflatable toys and floats. The waterslide and spa pool are open and there’s great music to get you in the party mood. The baby pool willalso be open so that younger children can have fun too.
Crown green bowling bonanzaBowls is a great sport that's suitable for all. The session teaches you the basics of the game and youcan learn new skills in a number of fun games and activities.

Cycle gamesIf you know how to cycle, then why not try the challenge of playing some games whilst riding yourbike? Enjoy competing in pairs or in teams with activities such as the slalom and cone-heads to namebut a few. Challenge yourself to do the balance box and many more exciting games in this fun andactive session.
Diving schoolLearn how to dive with our fully qualified swimming teacher. Learn how to perform sitting, standingdives, dive through hoops and dive down to the bottom of the deep end for treasure.
DodgeballGet yourself down to Salt Ayre to have a go at this totally crazy sport. This action packed two hoursession will allow you to gain the skills needed to take part in a series of dodgeball matches that willtest your co-ordination, movement and balance. So why not come along, learn a new sport and havea fun and fantastic time.
Extreme Sports - Skiing / indoor skydiving / climbing / snow carver NEW!Calling all you adrenaline junkies! Test your nerves with a day packed full of excitement at Airkix andChill Factore. We start the day with two 60 second indoor skydives*. For this activity you are given allthe safety equipment and are supervised at all times whilst inside the skydiving area. To see the skydive in action visit Airkix.com. After the skydiving we make our way over to the Chill Factore wherethe adventure continues with a 1 hour skiing lesson on real snow! Then it’s onto the indoor climbingwall to test your head for heights before making our way back onto the snow to experience the NEWsnow carving sledging. This specially designed sledge allows you to dodge and weave down theslope at incredible speeds. All the activities are supervised by experienced, qualified coaches and allthe equipment is supplied. You just need all the right clothing and a packed lunch, oh and don’tforget nerves of steel! This great day out that would cost £94 if booked individually, but with us it’savailable for the bargain price of £35.
*To take your skydiving experience to the max, why not dare to try the high-flyer challenge using a 30ft high chamber? If you areup for it, this experience will cost an extra £5 per person on the day.
Habitat trail quiz NEW!Come along to this exciting new habitat trail in the woodland area of Happy Mount Park. Let’s explorethis walk together and discover some interesting facts about the creatures that live there.

Indoor climbingCome and try the new indoor climbing wall at the newly built Lancaster University sports centre. Thissession is suitable for both beginners and advanced climbers. You will receive expert tuition on howto overcome the slabs, the vertical and overhanging walls. Please note you MUST wear laced uptrainers to take part in this activity.
Indoor mini OlympicsDo you fancy being the next Olympic champion? If so this could be your first step in achieving a goldmedal in the future. Your all-round athletic skills will be tested in two hours of action-packed eventsincluding long jump, javelin, shot put, sprint and relay.
Junior football coaching NEW!A fun and informative session that’s perfect for anyone wanting to improve their football skills. Thistwo hour session includes a series of training exercises including dribbling, shooting and penaltytaking followed by some matches to test your new skills. This activity is aimed at younger childrenand the emphasis is on fun.
Learn to cycleThis short course is aimed at children who cannot yet ride or still use stabilisers. Please bring aroadworthy bike which allows the seat to be lowered so that your child can get his/her feet flat onthe ground and suitable clothing for being outdoors.
Morecambe FC v Bristol Rovers (tour, coaching and match)This is an amazing opportunity to watch our local team take on Bristol Rovers. Join us for a tour of theGlobe Arena and then receive a coaching session from Morecambe FC's own coaches. Finish the dayby watching the exciting match against Bristol Rovers. Please note that young people are fullysupervised at all times including during the match.
OrienteeringExperience the great outdoors with this fun and friendly orienteering session. Learn some mapreading skills and try them out on the exciting orienteering course around Williamson Park.
Outdoor footballTaking place on the Astroturf football pitch, you can practice your skills in some set drills. Then takethose skills that you’ve learned or practised into some short sided matches.
Racket sportsA quick fire session that’s both challenging and enjoyable. You’ll be involved in a fun competitionplaying badminton, short tennis and table tennis. Not only can you improve your skills, you may beable to win a small prize.
Rookie lifeguard Learn some key lifesaving skills whilst having fun and keeping fit. This special session at HeyshamSwimming Pool is the perfect training ground for the lifeguards of the future. You’ll learn lifesavingskills, basic first aid and procedures which one day could save someone's life.

Skate park NEW!Experience the thrill of our skate park. Test yourself with our ramps and jumps. Bring your own bikeor skate board or you can borrow one of ours. Helmets will be provided.
Skiing for beginners / tubing / luging - family funThis exciting session is ideal for children and parents alike. Learn to ski down the dry-ski slope atPendle Ski Club and learn how to turn, race and most importantly stop. After the skiing and a spot oflunch the fun keeps on going with a tubing and luging session. This session is led by the club’s ownexpert instructors and is ideal for beginners. Please note a maximum of two parents per child. Also amaximum of two children per parent. You must attend this workshop with a parent whatever yourage and the parent also has to pay.
SportzcrazyAre you sports crazy? Then join us for two hours of indoor sports including football, dodgeball, Danishlong ball and many more. This is a great session for anyone who is crazy for sports.
Treasure huntCan you solve the clues, put together the puzzle and discover where the treasure is hidden? If socome along and take part in this fun and exciting Treasure Hunt. Will you find the treasure?
T-shirt designingShow off your artistic side and design your own t-shirt using a variety of materials that we willprovide. You can take home anything you make in the session.
Water polo weekA fantastic introduction to the fun and challenging sport of water polo. This week long course is takenby a long-standing member of the Great Britain water polo team. During each session you’ll learn allthe skills needed to be a water polo player and put them into practice with a few small sidedmatches. So why not try something new this half term and enrol on water polo week?
Wet and dry dayA totally brilliant day not to be missed at Salt Ayre Sports Centre. Starting with a brief introductionabout the day's activities, it's off to the pool for our famous fun and floats session until lunchtime.Please note that lunch is not provided but you can take advantage of the excellent menu at the FreshAyre Cafe. After lunch it's off to the main sports hall for an afternoon of sporting fun and mayhem.Included in this action packed afternoon will be dodgeball, football and Danish long ball.
