SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE

I N T E R N A T I O N A L

2013

In this age and time, enterprises are being seen

as the critical components of any social system

they dwell in. They are answerable not only from

a profitability and revenue point of view but to

the larger society, which is its stakeholder.

Doing business responsibly is now the well-accepted

business principle. This is where Sustainable

Development comes in. Adoption of responsible

business practices in the interest of the social set-up

and the environment are as vital as their financial and

operational performance.

Many organisations now report their environmental,

social and governance performance. Most stock markets

are in the process of making reporting on Sustainability

Indicators a requirement for listing.

This is the right time to internalise the inherent

message of Sustainable Development. In our endeavour

to further enhance awareness about this topic and also

to highlight the current initiatives in the corporate world,

the International Sustainable Development Conference

2013 has been envisaged.

The theme of the conference is Business Responsibility.

Join us to embark on a Sustainable Development

journey…

THEME: BUSINESS RESPONSIBILITY

Business responsibility is not new in India. It has existed

in some legacy Indian companies for over a hundred years.

These organisations intuitively set in place a framework

of stakeholder-inclusive governance and strategy-making

processes and made Sustainability the driver of their

business success. In the process, they earned the respect

of customers, employees, financial institutions, other

stakeholders and partnered with them to achieve long-

term benefits. In today’s context, business responsibility

remains as significant. It presents a unique opportunity

for companies to revisit or define their Sustainability

value proposition to build shareholder wealth and

ensure corporate growth while inculcating the qualities

of a responsible corporate citizen.

Compliance and reputation most certainly are the keys

to business sustenance, and a structured Business

Responsibility strategy is indeed a step in the right

direction. Drawing business value from the nine principles

of the National Voluntary Guidelines on Social,

Environmental and Economic Responsibilities of Business

and embedding them in business strategy is the key and

could surely help integrate Sustainability with business

performance.

Corporate India can truly leverage this opportunity to

build its next growth story, which would, this time around,

be centered on Sustainability and business responsibility.

Whether you are a new comer to the arena of

Sustainability or a seasoned Sustainability champion,

a top 100 company or one that is rapidly growing to

get there, the question remains the same…have you

leveraged business responsibility for growth and

success? Are your risks managed and opportunities

harnessed? Is your business geared to deliver

stakeholder expectations through Business

Responsibility? In short, are you ready?
