Greetings from Camp Ondessonk!

Camp Ondessonk had a tremendously successful 2013, and I am so thankful you were a part of it! We enjoyed the best summer camp enrollment in 12 years, record fundraising success, increased investment in infrastructure and systems (like a brand new waterline, and updated database and financial accounting systems), and huge growth in our school-year programming. Even when we had a bit of a scare with our horse herd (they were quarantined for a few weeks because of a virus that only affects horses), I was so proud of our staff for their professional ability to cheerfully turn on a dime and develop contingency activities that, in the end, were so well received by campers that we incorporated them permanently into our regular summer camp schedule. As we begin Summer Camp 2014, our 55th summer, the future looks bright! But the future isn’t bright just for Camp Ondessonk. The future is bright for our camp-ers, staff and friends. It’s so gratifying to see just how this recipe we call “The Camp O Experience” comes together to inspire the lives of those who enter our gates. This Stewardship Report shares a few of those stories. You’ll read about Rachel, who sees a bright, pain-free future thanks to a successful surgery and a recovery spurred by the dream of Camp and the support of her Camp friends. You’ll read about Abby, who attributes her success as a nationally-competitive gymnast and her future dream of becoming a pediatrician to her Camp experience. And you’ll read the names of all of those whose gifts of time, talent and treasure ensure that the future of Camp Ondessonk remains bright. None of this would be possible, of course, without the blessings of God, our Father, and the support of people like you. May the campers of Ondessonk feel such love forever and ever. At Camp O, we are a family.To all the wonderful Camp Ondessonk staff & Lodge members,

I have wanted to send this email for quite a whilebut when I do, the emotions take over and I am unable to finish it.

Today is the day I will complete it and thank you for helping my daughter, Rachel.

On July 8, 2013 Rachel had Chiari 1 Decompression Brain surgery. Chiari 1 is a condition where your brain stem extends beyond your skull and presses on your spinal cord. Left untreated it causes extreme neck/shoulder pain, debilitating headaches, temporary paralysis, permanent nerve damage and more. Rachel postponed her surgery so she could attend Camp Ondessonk as a CIT in June. I must note that my daughter loves Camp O with her whole heart!

Rachel had suffered for years from horrible migraines (but) the doctors are amazed by her tolerance of pain and her determination to get better. Rachel’s incision/scar is seven inches long, on the back of her neck and runs from where her skull and spinal cord meet down her spinal column. Most patients are on prescription painkillers for weeks after brain surgery. Rachel was refusing those medicines after 24 hours.

My daughter had two very important goals during her recovery from brain surgery. One was to return to her volunteer work at Helping Strays of Monroe County. (She is known as the “Cat Girl” in the organization and she considers every one of them her “baby”). She returned to Helping Strays just six weeks after her surgery.

Her second goal was to be well enough to attend Fall Lodge Reunion. She is SO ready to get to her favorite place in the world. When her doctor gave her the green light, she was beyond happy.

I must tell you the hardest week of recovery was the week of Summer Lodge Camp. Rachel hated that she couldn’t be there with her “Camp friends”. She was having some minor complications and was in a deep funk. I should have known the Camp O staff and Lodge Members would come through for Rachel and our family. The day the huge get well card from Lodge Camp arrived in the mail for Rachel was a Godsend! She cried tears of joy every time she read it. Her whole demeanor did a turnaround. The cherished card is sitting on Rachel’s desk and occasionally I see her looking at it with a smile on her face.

While in the hospital, Rachel had quite a few visitors. Three of those visitors were girls she met at Camp Ondessonk. She had told only a few of the counselors and fellow campers about her surgery but those who she told sent cards, Facebook messages and prayers. Each one meant so much to her.

I cannot tell you how difficult it is watch your child go through what Rach has gone through. At one point, it was implied that maybe the headaches and pain were “all in her head.” Every year she looked forward to going to camp. She said it was the one place that seemed to make the headaches and pain go away.

Thank you for being the place that Rachel could escape her condition. Thank you for helping her with her recovery.

I am looking forward to pulling through those Camp Ondessonk gates on September 27 to drop off Rachel for Fall Lodge Reunion. It will be her “victory dance” for defeating Chiari 1.

FutureCamp O isn’t just a place where kids go to hang with friends, eat foil burgers and sneak through the woods during Tuesday night game. It’s a place where they learn the skills and talents that will serve them well as our future doctors, teachers, parents and leaders.

Your investment of time, talent and treasure is an investment in the future. Yours and ours!

Meet AbbyGymnastics has been Abby’s life since she was a wee tot. Thousands of training hours in the gym, sweating through injury, perfecting routines, sacrificing time with friends and family for her craft. And it all paid off last year — Abby placed 9th at Nationals in 2013. Heepwah!!!

If you ask Abby what helped her reach her goal of becoming a nationally ranked gymnast, she says,“Camp. It gave me confidence that I could take on responsi-bilities at home, in the gym and in my community.”

Abby came to Camp with two of her gymnastics teammates in 2007, and she was hooked. Describing her experience as a camper, CIT, LIT (and soon-to-be summer staff member), she uses five words to describe how she has grown because of Camp:

Spirituality. “At school, I learned a lot of facts about my faith, but at Camp I truly experienced God in nature. Now I have an incredible desire to build a relationship with God.”

Responsibility. “Being responsible for other kids is something I hadn’t experienced before, and it made me mature a lot. It gave me confidence to take on other responsibilities.”

Adventure. “Before Camp, I didn’t want to swim in a creek, or play in the mud. I learned to have fun.”

Maturity. “I look up to remarkable people and want to step into those big shoes. Camp taught me discipline, confidence in myself, and how to set goals and achieve them.”

People. “I’ve grown in my people skills by interacting with so many different kinds of people, like parents and volunteers, who I can learn so much from.”

Abby has leveraged her Camp experiences not only in the gym, but in her activities in student council, as president of her National Honor Society chapter, and in her parish youth group. She has matured into a leader who inspires others.

Abby plans to attend Vanderbilt in Fall 2014, to begin her studies to become a pediatrician. “Camp Ondessonk opened my eyes to a whole new future, and the potential of working with kids. Camp showed me the impact one person can have on a child’s life. I felt the impact myself.”

We are proud to be a part of Abby’s next trip to the stars!

Investing in Young Leaders

Too often we hear that “young people today just don’t know how to work/feel entitled/only care about themselves…”

We couldn’t disagree more.

Every year, between 100-140 talented staff members give their heart and soul to make sure that our campers have the most incredible Camp O experience ever. Like those before them, they endure blistering heat, bug bites and rashes, 24-hour work days, homesick campers and hard work. But ask any of them, and they say with a grin, “I’d do this all day, every day, 365 days a year if I could!” We are so proud of them!

Most importantly, these young people are learning skills that will serve them well as parents, employers/employees and citizens. Skills like time management, critical thinking, psychology, interpersonal communications, loyalty, dedication, problem solving, health and fitness, and more. Skills that will make them a success.

In 2013 we continued to build on our outstanding leadership program. Our CIT program focuses on leadership skills and personal development, and the LIT program intensifies this training and adds American Camp Association and Certified Horse Association endorsed activity and unit training.

Our talented staff is one of the reasons our program remains the gold standard in our industry, our campers are inspired by the best of the best, and our young leaders leave Camp with valuable experience that sets them apart from their peers.

In 2012, Camp Ondessonk created the Ondessonk Builders and Founders, two new giving societies that recognize and honor donors and volunteers who support Camp’s mission through volunteerism and charitable gifts. These annual gifts of time, talent and treasure enable Camp to serve our campers and truly become “the world’s best youth camp.”

Those friends who volunteered 100 hours in 2013 are recognized as Original Builders. Honoring those who came before them, they are leading the way and inspiring others to support our mission and continue our Camp family’s long tradition of selfless support. Camp Ondessonk’s FinancesSome of our greatest strides forward were not made in places where kids see them with their eyes, but our campers certainly are impacted. Our operating budget has doubled since 2008. This is good news for our overall health, but the maze of reporting and accounting procedures to which we must adhere became more and more complex during this time period. Starting at the end of 2012 and throughout 2013, we invested heavily in the financial expertise necessary to shepherd further growth.

In so doing, Camp Ondessonk became a strongerorganization. This organizational investment of resources, combined with very strong summer camp enrollment, income growth from mission supporting school-year programming & services, and record fundraising success, resulted in the largest year-end budget surplus in recentOndessonk history. Your gifts make this happen!
